2 out of 5 stars Curious.......2004-03-16

Does it seem strange to anyone that all of the 26 reviews for this book sound exactly the same? Almost like the same person wrote all of the reviews.......or coached others on how to write them.....hmmm...

5 out of 5 stars Motivational and definitely life changing.......2002-11-30

I've ready many books on how to get the life you want but by far this is the best yet. Easy to read, there's little exercises to do to get you thinking and she even provides ideas for making more. Brilliant. If you know you're not living your best life, then this book will really get you going in the right direction with motivation. Get it!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Book! Very Impressive!.......2002-03-02

I have read a lot of books on how to be successful--from these books I learned it takes hard work to make money. But what about life? Having a balanced life yet still making lots of money seems impossible--from all the reading I had so far.

Then when I pick up this tape I was really suspicious. After I listened to the 1st tape, I absolutely LOVE it! Absolutely fantastic! I found myself talking this to myself (happily): Paraphrase: Do what you'are best at (your "brilliance") and "Laser day/support day/free day" building momentum theory, 80/20 focus phylosophy (this is not new, but it's nice to hear it from a different person again in a different way of explanation), delegate, duplicate, saying no (I said no to a meeting that does not let me focus on my brilliance--yes, I'm so happy!!!), when is enough for adding value(talking about a sincere wise phylosophy!!), free up space and time to focus on your brilliance, write journal. All in all, it confirms my own beliefs that when you have a life besides work you can sustain your brilliance better than overly working. I haven't finished the tape now, I'm on Innovation now. She said most of people think they are not innovative. But you are, everybody are. If you think you are, you are! Using a new way of doing things better, that's innovative! You don't have a dead soul...

Some of the suggestions are not new, a few examples are not that convincing, yet, those are so minor!!! Nobody or no book/tape is perfect--this tape are exceptional!

5 out of 5 stars The Answer.......2001-11-10

If you keep asking yourself, how can I make more money, how can I can have more time, how can I do more things that I enjoy - then this book will give you the answer you are looking for. I have read dozens of business/career books and not until I read this book did I say to myself "Oh, of course, that is what I should do". In fact, I look at my life now as pre- and post- Work Less Make More! You should buy enough copies for all your friends and family.

Book Description

Twenty-two years ago, Martin Mayer's original and bestselling The Bankers took readers into every corner of the banking industry. Since then, everything to do with money and banking has changed dramatically. Computer-driven data processing has led to new kinds of financial instruments, new opportunities for profit and loss, new relations between banks and their customers, and new affiliation between government and banks. Businessmen and householders need a new road map to banks' new abilities, challenges, and pitfalls. Mayer's completely new, completely rewritten 1997 edition on banking's immensely changed world answers that need. Among the many subjects explored in this timely book are:
The extremely fluid nature of money in an electronic age
The changing economic role of banks and other financial service institutions
The perilous voyages of today's banks on seas of computerized trading
The two-trillion-dollar-a-day flow of wholesale payments
The explosive growth and use of credit cards and ATM machines
The rapidly arriving world of "smart cards" and "internet banking."
Mayer shows the reader where the trends lead--and what the industry itself and its regulators can to do pluck the plums of progress from the messy confusion of great change itself. Accessible to any reader yet specific enough to capture the attention of the world's business professionals, The Bankers: The NextGeneration, explains the banking revolution of our time. This is every business reader's must-read book of the 1990s.
Martin Mayer is the most widely recognized name in banking and finance. The Bankers hardcover edition hit the bestseller lists of Business Week and the San Francisco Chronicle.

5 out of 5 stars The Hobo Philosopher.......2007-09-18

I wouldn't say that this is a casual read for the "general" reader. To really understand what this author has to say you have to have more than a casual interest in money and banking.
But that being said, I read it and I'm no banking major. I won't say that I understood everything that the author tried to explain. It was all very interesting and often very confusing. Often though I understood all the words, I couldn't fathom the sentence. Anyone who says that they understand "money" and how it works, I think is kidding themselves. Understanding the workings of what we call "money" is a logical paradox; it is a philosophical inquiry; it is much ado about something.
Understanding money is another project that I have taken on intellectually. Galbraith wrote a great book about "Money" From Whence It Came and Where It Went. He claimed in the intro to that book that anyone with the requisite desire has the ability to understand money. I don't think so.

3 out of 5 stars Just read chapters 9 & 10.......2003-04-17

I run with a crowd of i-bankers, and I bought this book to try to better understand what they do all day. However, this book is a LOT of history, and the entire first Part of the book is VERY basic information relating to what "money" is.

If you learn well through anecdotes, you will find this book both informative and easy to read. If, on the other hand, you are considering this book thinking it will be information about the modern banking industry given in a straightforward way, you're out of luck. In order to understand the industry (or what pieces of it this book explores, anyway) you have to extrapolate larger themes from nearly 500 pages of amost exclusively history and anecdotal examples. In addition, Martin has a habit of describing people in the industry, e.g., "Mr. X, a swarthy fellow I knew while still a fencer at Penn and something of a womanizer besides..." For some, I'm sure this keeps the book from being too dry. I, on the other hand, found these descriptions annoying and diversionary.

In sum, if you're looking for information about the modern banking industry, just read chapters nine and ten, which are well-written, relatively complete, and exceptionally easy to understand. If, instead, you are looking for the story of how banking has evolved, or you just like to read businessmen's tales, then this is the book for you.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable to read and packed with excellent information.......2002-04-29

Excellent book on modern day banking industry, extremely informative with lots of information, but easy to digest even for those who just wanted to learn a little more about the business.
It is well written and easy to understand overall. Making it unexpectedly enjoyable.

4 out of 5 stars Very interesting book.......2000-06-19

This is the first and only book I've ever read on banking. But it is very well written, clear, concise, and filled with interesting bits of history. The author shows extreme mastery of the topic. If you read any book about the industry, this should be it.

3 out of 5 stars A Book as Quirky as the Industry Portrayed by the Author.......2000-05-17

The financial services industry has always been something of an enigma to me. After reading THE BANKERS, it still is. Perhaps the lush reviews garnered by this book instilled unrealistic expectations: I expected a carefully researched, scholarly treatment of the banking business past-to-present. For better or worse, this book reads more like a quirky monologue by someone who knows the banking business well, but who prefers to deliver his knowledge by free association rather than by cogent and orderly description. The anecdotes are sometimes very entertaining, and the reader does pick up some valuable insights. But the return on effort extended is less than excellent. What's especially ironic is the book's chapters ARE cogently organized...it's only the follow-through that's lacking.

The book's high point is Chapter 3 (Paying Bills). Here the author does an admirable job of describing the excruciatingly convoluted process of check clearance. It would seem to be the dullest subject imaginable, but Mayer brings it to life -and I suspect he does such an admirable job because he has a flair for showing the quirkiness in any subject under the sun. The biggest disappointment of the book is how Mayer is compelled to entangle his journalistic prominence with whatever other point he wants to make ("A team of television journalists came from a Japanese network to visit me in Washington..."). Once again, there are some terrific insights, and some entertaining one-liners. It's just that the perspective one receives seems indulgently biased, and not particularly comprehensive.

Law school casebook that draws liberally upon the subject's rich history in law and culture. Without that history, there can be no firm understanding of the subject. Second, animals are living entities, organized into shifting, complex ecological systems; from the first page, biology plays a critical role in the story. Third, moral sentiments and ethical values have expanded to attend to the plight of particular animals, to species, and to the healthy functioning of communities. Ethical concerns, too, appear as a key issue.

              Book Description

An investigation of the connection between ancient world catastrophe myths and modern scientific evidence of a galactic destruction cycle

              • Provides scientific evidence of past Earth-wide catastrophes and their galactic superwave origins

              • Decodes the ancient message encrypted in the zodiac constellations and symbolism of the Sphinx

              • Describes how explosions of our Galaxy’s core pose a threat to humanity in the future

Many ancient myths from around the world tell of catastrophic destruction by fire and flood. These ubiquitous legends are so extreme that they are often dismissed as imaginative exaggerations. In Earth Under Fire, Paul LaViolette connects these "myths" to recent scientific findings in astronomy, geology, and archaeology to reconstruct the details of prehistoric global disasters and to explain how similar tragedies could recur in the near future.

Compelled by his decryption of an ancient warning hidden in zodiac constellation lore, LaViolette worked with information from many scientific sources, including astronomical observations, polar ice core measurements, and other geological data, to confirm that our Galaxy’s core exploded near the end of the last ice age. This explosion unleashed a barrage of cosmic rays and enveloped the solar system in a dense nebula, which led to periods of persistent darkness, frigid cold, severe solar storms, searing heat, and mountainous floods that plagued mankind for many generations. Linking his scientific findings to details preserved in the myths and monuments of ancient civilizations, he demonstrates how past civilizations accurately recorded the causes of these cataclysmic events, knowledge of which may be crucial for the human race to survive the next catastrophic superwave cycle. This information reveals the intelligence and ingenuity of our ancestors who, when faced with extinction, found the means to warn us that the apocalypse that destroyed them could occur once again.

1 out of 5 stars Brilliant, in its own way.......2007-10-08

Sometimes you make the wrong decisions for the right reasons. I flatter myself this purchase falls in that category.

Paul A. LaViolette, Ph.D, is without a doubt a very bright fellow. If "Earth Under Fire" is intended as a parody of junk science, it most certainly attains the author's lofty goal, in spades. Seldom have I had the pleasure of reading such fulsome, literate, and totally meaningless gibberish as is contained in this beautifully illustrated tome.

The sardonic premise is that a combination of Tarot cards and a tortured deconstruction of astrology provide the keys to all the secrets of advanced physics and theories of the universe.

As one might suspect, Dr. LaViolette gives his satiric theories a millenarian cast: we are doomed, doomed, I say, by a civilization-ending event of cosmic proportions to which I (Dr. LaViolette) alone have the key.

The event alluded to, long story short, is a kind of death ray emanating from the center of our galaxy that's going to make us all mighty sorry we were ever born.

I'm a fan of millenarian schemas, still unsure of which doomsday scenario I most prefer: earthquakes, super-volcanoes, catastrophic floods, strikes by huge meteors, global pandemics, fiery global warming, alien invasions, cockroach mutations, or instant glaciers that render North America an instant massive ice cube. The death ray idea is one I'm going to add to the list.

Should you buy this book? If you're a fan of this sort of thing and enjoy obsessing over the irreducibly inane, you will heart this book. Otherwise, go get a pizza.

4 out of 5 stars He is of course not alone in postulating such a catastrophy some 15,000 years ago, but his explanation is quite unique........2006-10-15

In recent years, catastrophism has become somewhat more respectable in scientific circles, but marginalization of scientists avowing this theory is still happening. Paul LaViolette, who holds degrees in physics and systems science, has his own story to tell about bias in supposedly objective science.

Admittedly, he started out with a distinct handicap by basing his astronomical investigations on a decryption of the zodiac, as transmitted through traditional lore. According to him, the ancients bequeathed to us knowledge of an astronomical disaster that occurred toward the end of the last ice age: a massive explosion at the core of our galaxy, which caused a superwave of subatomic particles and rays that upon entering our solar system pushed huge amounts of debris toward the Sun leading to a significant decrease of sunlight.

He is of course not alone in postulating such a catastrophy some 15,000 years ago, but his explanation of the event is quite unique. Using mythology, star lore, astronomy, astrophysics, geology, archaeology, La Violette has succeeded in painting a colorful and fascinating picture of what he believes happened just before the emergence of the early civilizations. Clearly, something extraordinary happened and, if LaViolette is correct, it could happen again. It makes sense to generously support further research.

This work is best read in conjunction with Richard Firestone et al.'s The Cycle of Cosmic Catastrophes, also published by Bear & Co.

              5 out of 5 stars Monumental! Amazing!.......2006-03-14

One hardly knows where to begin to review a book of this kind. It's a tour de force that leaves one speechless. I had already read LaViolette's Genesis of the Cosmos -- which in my view was the biggest breakthrough in Egyptology since Champollion deciphered the Rosetta stone. In it LaViolette essentially decoded the ancient Egyptian religion. He showed that it was anything but a primitive pagan cult. It was rather a kind of time capsule: based on a physics so advanced that it was not until the 1970s that our modern science progressed enough to decipher it. The implication of course is that a remote culture with an advanced physics had to be a high civilization. OK. So what happened to it?

The author answers the question in Earth Under FIre. Understand, LaViolette didn't crank out this book in a year or even two. He's been working on this superwave theory for probably 30+ years. In a nutshell he's proposing that the galactic center periodically goes into a violent phase and releases vast amounts of cosmic radiation. Which spreads out across the galaxy triggering supernovae events and God only knows what all else. When the superwave reaches our solar system it encounters our sun's dust/gas nebular cloud which is far out beyond Pluto -- and it pushes lots of dust into our solar system. With results that are catastrophic for our planet.

The author does a fine job presenting his case. He has gathered reams of evidence -- and while I personally take issue with several points these are peripheral to his main argument. Indeed, I was tremendously impressed with the author's science acumen, his skill as a communicator, his eloquence in marshaling the evidence, and with the argument itself. I came away convinced. And it made me damn angry to learn that the bureaucrats have treated LaViolette so shabbily. He is doing important work and deserves to be fully funded.

One last point to show how all of this relates to your life: If you know your physics you will know that high energy photons, i.e. cosmic rays, behave like particles. They have mass and momentum. Which is another reason why these superwaves are so dangerous. There's a real possibility they are preceded by a horrific gravity wave. What's the relevance? It seems we had a minor event -- a gamma burst -- from the galactic center that arrived 44 hours after the Dec 2004 tsunami that leveled Sumatra and the Indian basin, killing 250,000+ people. Well, the quake that caused it may well have been triggered by the gravity wave that preceded the burst.

Enuf said. Brother, this is heavy medicine.

5 out of 5 stars Intellectually superior and timely........2006-01-11

What an incredible read. Pure genius! This book will definitely expand your mind. The author's PhD status is unquestionable.

                Book Description

Written in the spirit of Liboff’s acclaimed text on quantum mechanics, Primer for Point and Space Groups is an ideal introductory text for undergraduates in physics, engineering, materials science, chemistry. With its shrewd selection and arrangement of examples, the book traces at every turn the physical implications of abstract concepts. The book will therefore provide a solid background for those students who expect to use group theory in nuclear and particle physics and other specific applications. Among the many introductions to group theory currently available, few are as closely attuned to the needs of the applied scientist without compromise to the logic and lucidity of the presentation.

Here are some of the applications covered in Liboff’s Primer for Point and Space Groups:

                Applications to Quantum Mechanics:

                  Book Description

People have enjoyed stories of magic and the supernatural for ages, but in the late 18th century, tales of the occult became something more than a source of thrilling entertainment. At the dawn of the modern age, numerous writers found in the occult a powerful antidote to the rising scientification of human experience. In these reports from the dark side, the weird, enigmatic and unexplainable became symbols of the human spirit's resistance to the new rational world.

The Dedalus Occult Reader brings together for the first time a unique collection of European fiction, including passages from Valery Bruisov, Andre Bely, William Beckford, Honore Balzac, Jacques Cazotte, J.K.Huysmans, Bulwer-Lytton, de Maupassant, de Nerval, Goethe, E.T.A. Hoffmann , Arthur Machen, Gustav Meyrink, Jan Potocki and Robert Irwin, offering some of the finest flowers and bizarre blooms from the hermetic gardens of literary occultism.
