Book Description
In this perennial bestseller, Nancy Anderson shows readers how following their passion and finding that special niche in whatever realm they are truly passionate about is the most effective and rewarding approach to business and career success. Work with Passion follows the step-by-step program she initiates in her career counseling practice, carefully guiding readers through each stage. The program follows the ten "Passion Secrets" of successful people, and topics include clarifying goals, trusting instincts, doing research, and meeting others who are equally passionate about their work. This fully revised edition includes a new introduction by the author.
"I have found that we love to hear success stories," Anderson writes, and each chapter tells those powerful stories of people who have overcome adversity and realized their dreams. Work with Passion has a wealth of inspirational guidance, from the broadest kinds of visionary encouragement to very practical tips on networking, developing a resume, and writing a query letter that gets results. This comprehensive course in career consulting is for everyone who would rather brag about their career than complain about their job.
Customer Reviews:
Work at what you love!!.......2006-05-29
Nancy Anderson's unique book, Work with Passion, is unlike anything I've ever read. It's a one-of-a-kind, hands-on, practical approach to getting paid to do what comes naturally to you. This is not a job hunt book. It's about the process that takes you to knowing your life's work, what's enjoyable for you, the job or business that uses all of your talents and skills. Doing this work gives you deep personal satisfaction, and all the money you need.
Work with Passion is different from other career books because it connects the emotional and psychological intricacies of early family life to the subconscious blocks that inhibit personal and financial success. I discovered this connection six years ago after I worked through the exercises in the book. I am still amazed by the transformation and changes that have occurred and are still occurring in my life since then. The process was slow and often painful, but it led me to freedom from the past. I've learned that the journey should be enjoyed because that's how you come to know yourself and what you love. The hardest part was letting go of what's familiar and trusting in the unknown. It's been a struggle to dissolve the myth that work should be drudgery, but three years ago I moved to Madrid, Spain and created my own business doing what I love most, language and communication coaching. The journey and process are still unfolding, but thanks to the work Nancy's book encouraged me to do, I'm at a place in my life that I had only dreamt of when I was younger.
Life Changing.......2006-05-15
This book was the foundation upon which I was able to change my life from that of an frustrated CEO to an independent business woman, wife, mother and friend. Nancy's process uncovered so many "ahh hahhhhh" moments that the dots connected themselves. I found myself breathing deeper, living lighter and seeing a brighter future. All of my relationships have improved -- including the one with myself! It has been three years since I started the my "Work With Passion" journey and my life is amazingly fulfilled. I thank Nancy and her guidance for showing me the way. I now recommend this book to all of my friends. An easy way to find a better life path.
Work passionately, live passionately!.......2006-05-11
Nancy Anderson doesn't just show you how to find a career you're passionate about she shows you how to find a life you're passionate about!
As I worked my way through my autobiography, and the other enlightening excercises in the book, I watched the hardened exterior of my old life crack and fall away, exposing the shine of a new life as bright as freshly polished silver.
I recommend this book to anyone who is tired of being and working the way others think they "should" and to those who are tired of making excuses for not doing the work they love and living the life they deserve.
Life is precious, live it now. This book will show you how.
Fuel the Passion Inside.......2006-05-07
"Do not let mediocre people discourage you," writes Nancy Anderson as she encourages her readers to discover the passion within and apply it to their lives. Such passion will attract other people to you. She notes, "People cooperate with people for mutual gain in a trade-off situation."
On the examined life, she includes an exercise whereby you can write the epitaph for your life. In essence, mine was to live passionately as a steward to Jesus Christ, maximizing the resouces He provided for me to serve as steward over.
She has some insightful things to say about how our work defines us, telling us, "It is through the dignity of the work we do that we achieve self-esteem in life." Anderson is a big advocate of enjoying life's journey, reminding readers that life can be adventurous and provide satisfaction.
what's your passion?.......2006-05-07
Centuries ago, Socrates had observed that "the unexamined life is not worth living." Nancy's structured approach of obtaining and having a meaningful career through passion takes this ancient advice of self-examination to a very practical level. The first two chapters of this book are probably the most challenging because the reader is guided to write his/her own autobiography. It was just for this fact alone I'd decided to buy this book and use it in my new career path re-adjustment. I could not ever imagine that having my abridged life story `spilled' over eighty or so pages, that I could see it quite differently; sort of a perspective shift - from a frog's perspective to bird's view. But as my intuition/curiosity stirred me toward this book, the results were forthcoming. I had found and reconfirmed myself as a "solo type" in a contrast to "the partnership type" and "the team type", as Nancy classifies the basic personal traits in chapter six. No wonder my business venture with a partner ended in a hostile split (short of a fist-fight), nor was it a big surprise for me to realize the motivation for my escape from a Communist country decades ago. Surely, every person is a complex being, but there are preferred and detrimental conditions for one's own existence. Learning about passionate activities and analyzing happy moments in one's life brings more understanding what is important; we tend to habitually focus on analyzing our miseries. In this regards, Nancy accomplished through her approach and her writing style a major feat, not found in other career/personal growth books.
I'd like to mention that I am fortunate that Nancy lives in the neighboring county, and that she still offers private sessions; one-on-one in person or by the phone. She is in a real life as true to a client as she is as a writer to a reader. I had to research her past with a great effort; she is very humble about her accomplishments.
The consultations are useful for "decoding" of the autobiography. Nancy has a great gift to see the underlying patterns that we operate on - our choices of partners, employers and so on. The reader, a passion seeker, does the nitty-gritty work; sessions with her are not `make me feel good again.'
The book is only eleven chapters long, but do not let this fact mislead you. Nancy is a very efficient, eloquent and precise writer - there is never a doubt about what she means. In this book, there are real people stories, there are sample approach letters.
Buy and use this book.

Encouraging and Motivational.......2004-02-05
This book helps you to discover your passion, build upon your strength, and take the necessary action that leads to fulfillment. It clearly delineates the "ten passion secrets" advocated by the author. It begins with knowing what you want, i.e., defining your goal and ends with arriving at your destination. In between those two steps are the other eight which comprise the process entailed.
The insightful reflection she offers encourages you to enjoy the process of achievement, not just focus on the result. On commitment, she reminds us, "We develop a commitment to whatever we have spent time on: the more time, the stronger the commitment." She reinforces the importance of putting goals down on paper, noting that words in print are more permanent, they remind us of what we were thinking at a give time.
She has some creative things to say about creativity. "The artist, like the entrepreneur, is primarily a solo type. Their values are generally not those of the majority of the population," she writes. In terms of like attracting like, she adds, "The only mind that can understand a creative mind is one that is also creative!" This is an insightful book. It's major drawback is it limits things to "looking in" for guidance, when God offers so much more for Christians.
The best of 100 or so self-help books I have read........2001-09-02
In my early 20's I was an avid reader of self-help and psychology books. I took seminars, workshops, and volunteered in self-help groups for 2 years. I read books literally by the dozen.
I read "Work with Passion" about 5 years ago. It is the only book I can honestly recommend, as it is the only book which ever caused me to change my behavior. Assuming that such a change is the goal of reading a book geared towards helping one's self, then it alone was successful with me.
In reading it I became particularly in touch with the interests I had as a child. Upon reading it, I proceeded to fine-tune my college studies, and two years later had a job in the specialized field I had re-discovered through reading this book.
One thing I hadn't been aware of is that the author offers counseling in Marin County (call 411 for her number). Due to the recession, I am now in a state of career flux once again, and intend on using her personal services for the first time.
Though it helped me, this book may not resolve another person's lengthy (in my case 7 years) search for the "true" profession. However, if you intend on buying a book to help you out, do include this one.
One of the best I have read........2001-06-19
I highly recommend this book for those individuals that are self motivated and ready for a job change. For ten years now, I have read many, many books about careers and career counseling. This is truely the first book on careers that I read cover-to-cover in two days. I can't say that about any other career book, and that includes Richard Bolles' books. Of the 20-plus books I've read, this book gave me the information about changing careers in a way that felt comfortable, interesting, and most importantly empowering.
Trendy Career Cheerleading ... but No Substance.......2000-08-07
I just don't understand the 5 star ratings this book has received so far.
This book offers just a very general motivational approach ... with good luck stories and such. There is no problem-solving, practicality, or real vocational guidance.
I didn't even find it inspirational because it sounded too ... too much like (metaphorically): "throw yourself off the cliff if you've always dreamed of doing so, because the river will carry you" ... even though you still don't know "which cliff" you want to "leap off" of ... much less how to find OUT which one ... and to what PURPOSE it may even serve ... forget it!! I don't THINK so!! This book has a pop new-agish appeal to it that's overly idealistic, glossy ... with a light, superficial, nebulous, happy-happy-joy-joy feel to it. I finished it feeling depressed. It was like going on and on, praising EXCITEDLY some great present for a child, but leaving the innocent with no clue has to WHAT it is or how s/he can get to it. Taunting.
If one is lucky enough to already know EXACTLY what one wants and just needs a little rallying to go out and DO it, who knows: this book might help such a person. Otherwise, forget it. For myself, this book was a huge disappointment and (another) waste of my money and time.
(You might like to read my other reviews if you're interested in the few career books I HAVE found helpful.)
Work with Passion.......2000-01-24
I would give this book my highest recommendation. It was extremely interesting to work through and the size of it is not daunting whatsoever. It gives the reader a structure and a well-thought out process to work through to define what one's passion actually is - not an easy thing for many of us! In fact, it's a wonderful book to help you define yourself - especially if you have had life changes or feel stale and in need of a change.
It's rather hard to find the perfect job until you define what lights you up on every level. When you have worked through the process, it's amazing how opportunity presents itself in just the right way!
Book Description
Every day, people are promoted into the ranks of management . . . even if they never intended to become managers. They agree to their new responsibilities either to stay employed or to make more money. It is a universal phenomenon. But for these "accidental managers," it makes more sense to manage well than to manage badly, and this book tells them how.
Using examples and real-life case studies, The Accidental Manager gives readers the tools they need to make the most of their situation, showing them how to:
* Develop their people by having them work on their own and with others * Actively listen in order to build trust and increase communication * Give positive and constructive feedback to keep employees on track * Motivate by providing the best possible environment for each team member
The book reveals the ten worst types of managers (and how to avoid being one of them), and features a special Management Assessment tool. The Accidental Manager gives managers the skills they need to shine in their new -- accidental -- positions.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting. Useful. Don't miss it........2007-01-20
I am no accidental manager. Well, not a manager anyways.
I found this book in the hands of a colleague who is on his way to becoming a manager. Flipped a few pages, and said "hmm... interesting". Later I grabbed a chance to read this book myself.
Have you read the joke about a kid reading "Good Parenting" book? When his parents told him it was not the right time for him to read such a book, he replied with "But I'm checking if you're bringing me up the right way."
I wanted to check the same thing. (I'm kidding).
Anyways, on to the book. I found this a good read. I mean two things:
1) I didn't get bored. I actually managed to read all of it.
2) It taught me something useful.
There is a lot of management common-sense scattered around in books. This book brings some of that common-sense together in an interesting, easily digestible way. It tells you about the common fallacies of new 'accidental' managers, and lists recommendations on how to behave to avoid getting into those traps. It was fun to relate many characteristics to people you typically find in the industry (I am not referring to a specific industry here - it just applies to a lot of them). Another note - it's not just for 'accidental managers', but for every person who has been in a people management/leadership role and thinks he/she could improve.
I know many people who would certainly benefit from this book, and I am going to recommend it to them. I am surprised why this book isn't as popular yet as it should have been. Thanks to those who recommended it to my office's library though.
I'm giving this book a 5-star because it delivered what it promised - nothing more, but nothing less too.
very infomative--leaned a lot!.......2003-10-01
A must book for anyone who is new to managing. This is a situation I have found myself in and this book has really helped me manage my new job!
Recommend to anyone in management!

Book Description
Can individuals be reformed or rehabilitated in the prison? A persistent body of work indicates that rehabilitation and/or reformation through incarceration is illusory. Exceptions, according to this view, are the result of accident, not design. For many practitioners in corrections systems, the incarceration of criminals is a "fact" and the task of prisons is to isolate, deter, and punish and only then, perhaps reform the criminal. In "Can Prison Work?" Stephen Duguid contends that both critics and defenders of incarceration have erred in making the prisoner the object rather than the subject of their discourse; the critics see prisoners as victims of a monstrous institution and the defenders view them as incorrigibles persuaded only by coercion or manipulation.
Duguid begins by reviewing the philosophical and cultural contexts that led to the idea of "curing" criminals (in addition to deterring crime) through treatment and incarceration, presenting diverse historical commentaries from Plato and Socrates to former inmates. The two dominant approaches to modern corrections are also discussed, the one based on sociology and the one based on psychology - the latter being seen as responsible for the rise in the twentieth century of a medicalized approach to corrections.
It was the collapse of this 'medical' model (in the 1970s) that created possibilities for innovative approaches in penology and four of these approaches are examined in some depth. Focusing on prisons with broadly conceived educational programs organized by people from outside the field of corrections, Duguid describes how programs in Canada, England, Scotland, and the United States were successful largely because the relationship with prisoner-students was built around notions of reciprocity, mutual respect, and individual development. Empirical data from an extensive follow-up study of the Canadian program is presented as evidence of the potential success using these kinds of approaches. In each of these cases, however, these programs, others like them, were eventually terminiated by prison authorities. The book concludes with the exploration of the tension between prison systems and outsiders engaged with programs within prisons. It argues against the re-emergence of a new medical model in favour of more humane - and human - approaches to individual change and reformation.

Book Description
A book blending evolution and trophic dynamics, taking into account recent advances in both behavioral and population ecology, is long overdue. A central objective of this book is to consider whether adaptive behavioral decisions on the individual organism level might tend to stabilize trophic interactions. A second major goal of the book is to explore the implications of presumably adaptive behaviors on trophic dynamics and the implications of trophic dynamics for the evolution of adaptive behaviors. All evolutionary biologists, ecologists, and behavioral ecologists should find this exciting volume essential reading.

wow, great service.......2007-09-16
Super fast shipping!! I ordered this book for a class on a Thursday and I received it on the following Tuesday. The condition was perfect. The price was good as the school was packaging the book with an Atlas (which wasn't needed for my class) for $135.00. Thanks Amazon!!
Didn't use.......2007-05-20
on class syllabus only to find out it wasn't needed...don't know if it's a good resource tool, never used.
X-tremely readable textbook.......2005-12-29
I wasn't too sure I was getting into the right area of study, but after taking a class that used this text, I'm a lot more confident. It breaks up theories on why the environment is the way it is and how it came to be into well organized chapters and makes them especially clear with ample pictures, tables, and diagrams based on factual examples.
I have yet to hear a criticism of these thoeries apart from short, unreferenced, useless reviews, but if it does happen to be fiction, I'd rank it alongside of JRR Tolkien's best. Either way it would make a great 'coffee-table' book.
It is also laced near the end of chapters with author commentaries about the human species' inability to avoid poor choices for habitats such as near the sides of unstable mountains or flood-prone land in areas frequented by hurricanes (written prior to 2005), make of that what you will...
Dry, Misguided.......2002-01-21
This book is based on many theories as old as some of the pre-historic subject matter. Assumptions are not well researched or thought out. Poor organization and many dead-end trails. Very tiring to read. Skip it.
Just the right amount of info, nice illustrations........2000-01-19
The book gives clear, concise explanations of each aspect of the environment and atmosphere. The Earth, clouds, oceans and soils are covered. Nice illustrations to better comprehend topics in each chapter.

Book Description
With the discovery of high-temperature superconductors, research into polarons and bipolarons has attracted much attention. This book is the first standard reference to give a comprehensive view of the polaron and bipolaron theory of high-temperature superconductivity, one of the most significant discoveries in physics in the past decade. Scientists have also observed polarons and bipolarons in magnetic semiconductors and transition metal oxides. The thorough investigation of these nonsuperconducting materials has contributed greatly to our basic understanding of the physical properties of both polarons and bipolarons. This book contains a series of authoritative articles on the most advanced research on polarons and bipolarons in high-temperature superconductors and related materials. An outstanding portrayal of the immigrants' dilemmas. But the immigrants in "Two Cities" have nothing to do with the United States. They are exiled from Lvov, an ancient Polish town incorporated to the Soviet Union as a result of World War II, and sent to the post-German city of Gliwice in southern Poland. Everything that comes from Lvov or reminds them of Lvov is sacred while everything else is worthless. A child growing in the dual world of imaginary Lvov and real Gliwice has trouble finding his identity. He returns to the past, examines and questions the drama of the war, and struggles to reconcile his life with the semi-imaginative world that surrounds him. Two Cities as well as other short stories included in this book are true masterpieces but must be read with some minimum background on post-war Poland.
