Practical advice on an issue that's always emotional.......2006-03-04
The simple truth is that being good at what you do simply isn't good enough if you can't work with people. Technical abilities may get you promoted into a management position, but it takes interpersonal skills to keep you there. Bob Wall explores first, what makes work relationships successful and what makes them fail. He then provides some common-sense steps you can take to improve work relationships that aren't working.
The most effective way to improve work relationships, says the author, is to learn to distinguish between personal and professional relationships. A professional relationship exists solely for the purpose of getting work accomplished, while personal relationships can have many purposes. In personal relationships there is an assumption of equality, while professional relationships are often hierarchical. Conflict at work is often based on miscommunication. We are often blind to how our behavior affects others, while we are very critical of the faults of others. When there isn't adequate communication, we often stereotype others as "aggressive jerks" or "incompetent" without understanding the issues or perspective of the other.
To confront conflict at work, you must first understand that most people honestly mean well, but often fail to understand how their behavior and attitudes affect others on the team. Unless someone tells them about it, how will they know they should change? This is true of your own behavior as well. You must be willing to listen to how others are affected by your behavior on the job.
The easiest way to begin fixing problems at work is to agree on goals, roles and procedures. The most common source of problems in teamwork is ambiguity. The team should begin by asking themselves:
· What goals are we going to accomplish?
· What role is expected of every team member?
· How will we coordinate our work with each other?
A Solid Effort!.......2001-06-02
If you’ve been at loggerheads with a co-worker, calm down and read this. Bob Wall takes a close look at why the ubiquitous “personality problem” persists at work. His conclusions boil down to basics: Co-workers mix professional and personal relationships, confuse organizational roles and expectations, and simply clash due to dislike or incompatibility. He offers a number of familiar solutions to workplace conflict, advising you to pick your battles, agree to disagree and consider the possibility that you might be at fault. Not exactly rocket science, but Wall’s book is fresh, easy-to-read and reader-friendly. We ... recommend this book primarily to supervisors, who will find the dissection of professional relationships useful in managing your sometimes-hard-to-understand employees.
An important job and business practice guide........2000-05-04
This practical, important business books offers specific advice for users interested in business advice and enhancement. Bob Wall's Working Relationships presents facts on how to get along with friends and foes alike in a business setting. From building professional relationships and understanding different personality types and their motivations to handling complaints and requests, this provides an important job guide.
Working Relationships: The Simple Truth about Getting Along.......2000-01-24
This book is both practical and insightful. I could easily relate the situations described to my own. Mr. Wall provides down-to-earth and effective solutions to at-work problems that have the potential to ruin the day, the week - and sometimes the job! The principles can be applied to personal relationships as well.
great tool for anyone who works with people.......1999-12-13
I found this book to be an enjoyable read as well as a great resource for solving problems at work. It has some great excersizes to do and believe me they do work. This book is a must to own for anyone who needs help with a situation or problem at work .

Book Description
Continuing the four goals from the first edition, i.e. helping students to make good financial decisions, providing a solid text for the introductory MBA course, motivating students by demonstrating finance is relevant and interesting, and presenting the material clearly, this Tenth Edition promises to be the best yet. Written by a highly-acclaimed, best selling, author team, this text remains the only MBA-level text to present a balance of financial theory and applications.

Find another finance book.......2004-07-20
This book is a nightmare; thoroughly confusing. Authors do not know how to teach! Brigham & Company will take 30 pages to explain a concept that can be done in 2 pages. I used this book for my finance class for my MBA; this one is not worth the money or your time.
Excellent Textbook. Retain After Graduation as Reference.......2003-11-01
As an MBA student, I have now had the opportunity to study different finance books. This is undoubtedly the best. The CD rom resources are excellent. I will certainly retain this book for refence after graduation.
Excellent!.......2003-09-27
This is no corporate finance for dummies book. So, don't expect to have "fun" with it. However, on a graduate level the book is near perfect. I especially appreciate its treatment of case studies - carrying the same case study from chapter to chapter where appropriate. There is a CDROM that contains, among other things, very useful and practical Excel templates for each chapter. The authors also provide foot notes that I encourage you to read. Many of them give the author's opinion of how the subject works in the real world verses the academic world. If you are the type that learns best by knowing the big picture first, make sure you get the Study Guide too.
My only beef with this text is in the index, which is woefully lacking -- rendering it less useful as a research source.
Terrible Book.......2003-09-16
This book is terrible. I am an educated person, but it seems that your undergrad must be in finance in order to get any use out of it. If you are required to use this book for your graduate finance class (and you don't have a degree in finance), please invest in the study guide. It will help you a great deal.

Very enjoyable tale of shady lawyers in NY's Gilded Age.......2005-10-04
This is a multi-part New Yorker magazine article in book form. But it dates from the Ross rather than Shawn era, which means the prose is snappy rather than ponderous, and the tone amused rather than pontifical. It's by no means a scholarly work, but significant research must have gone into it.
Howe and Hummel were highly successful storefront lawyers of the 1880-1905 era, specializing in the outrageously bogus defense of the plainly guilty (Howe) and entertainment law (Hummel), with a lucrative sideline in blackmail (Hummel). In short, they were modern lawyers working in the gaslight era. Today one part of their business would be advertised with billboards, a second other part would have its office in Beverly Hills, and the third would specialize in class actions, and there would be no visible connection between them. It's perversely charming, and in a way enlightening, to see how they managed to integrate what seem at first glance to be quite disparate practices.
The book is a collection of anecdotes of their practice, arranged in roughly chronological order so as to provide a kind of sketchy biography of each of the principals. It can be read in two or three sittings, as if in two or three consecutive issues of the magazine.

Fascinating social history.......2002-10-15
Otherwise known as "The Magnificient Shysters," Howe and Hummel were two crooked lawyers of 19th century New York. If you think today's lawyers are crooks, you should read about the exploits of Messrs Howe and Hummel; they bear no comparison. For example you will read about suits for breach of promise. If a man slept with a woman on the understanding that he would shortly marry her, and he broke that promise, the woman could sue him for breach of promise to marry. Some of the lawyers' income depended on a coterie of sophisticated New York women, semi-prostitutes, who "led on" innocent young men from the sticks up in New York for the first time. After a brief relationship these women would file suit for breach of promise and daddy would invariably pay up rather than face the embarrassment of a public court case. If you like reading about the hidden by-ways of history you will love this book. A great little book.

Book Description
Contrary to those who regard the economic transformation of the West as a gradual process spanning centuries, Peter D. McClelland claims the initial transformation of American agriculture was an unmistakable revolution. He asks when a single crucial question was first directed persistently, pervasively, and systematically to farming practices: Is there a better way? McClelland surveys practices from crop rotation to livestock breeding, with a particular focus on the change in implements used to produce small grains. With wit and verve and an abundance of detail, he demonstrates that the first great surge in inventive activity in agronomy in the United States took place following the War of 1812, much of it in a fifteen-year period ending in 1830. Once questioning the status quo became the norm for producers on and off the farm, according to McClelland, the march to modernization was virtually assured. With the aid of more than 270 illustrations, many of them taken from contemporary sources, McClelland describes this stunning transformation in a manner rarely found in the agricultural literature. How primitive farming implements worked, what their defects were, and how they were initially redesigned are explained in a manner intelligible to the novice and yet offering analysis and information of special interest to the expert.

Book Description
Scott Baldridge presents a concise guide to the geology of the Southwestern U.S. Two billion years of Earth history are represented in the rocks and landscape of the Southwest U.S., creating natural wonders such as the Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, and Death Valley. This region is considered a geologist's "dream", attracting a large number of undergraduate field classes and amateur geologists. The volume will prove invaluable to students and will also appeal to anyone interested in the geology and landscape of the region's National Parks.
Customer Reviews:
The big geologic picture on a land where geology dominates the view.......2007-04-03
The title of this book says it all. The story begins two billion years ago and follows the formation of the continental crust of what is now the southwestern US. It then follows that chunk of land to the present, as supercontinents form and disintegrate, island chains collide, and mountains rise and fall. Unlike so many books about the geology of the southwest, Baldridge focuses on the plate tectonics behind the processes. This approach allows the reader to understand the "why" behind advancing and retreating seas, uplifts, faults and volcanoes. The geographic area studied is the southwest, although the Colorado Plateau seems to gather the most attention. It is seen in a broad geological context that includes what happened in places like Death Valley, the Rio Grande Rift and Southern Rocky Mountains. Baldridge places his explanation in standard geologic time, but his chapter breaks are in locations driven by the regional geology, not the standard hierarchy. For a Grand Canyon example, the Chuar and Tonto groups are a single chapter, a fresh (and justifiable) perspective. The story that comes through is a "life story" of the southwest, in which a reader can see the region's geology evolve, illustrating how events in its past shape its response to new conditions.
The book's broad scope means that the history of individual rock layers are often not there - indeed, many layers are not even mentioned (although the fame of Grand Canyon's rock column is evident, most of ours are). The layers serve to illustrate a "story line" driven by the forces acting on the land, they do not break the story into pieces because of what is (or is not) preserved in today's exposures. In developing this evolutionary presentation, Baldridge has to sort through many, often conflicting, hypotheses. He does a good job of finding common threads. In many cases, he presents different mechanisms but concludes with the salient points that seem to be areas of agreement or with the conditions that a solution must explain.
This book is not for the geologically faint of heart. It assumes a pre-existing general understanding of plate tectonics and other geological principles. It is not the place to learn how plate tectonics works, but is the best place I have found to understand how plate tectonics worked on the Colorado Plateau. It will not tell you how the Grand Canyon was carved, how Monument Valley formed, what makes the Supai Group red, or other specific questions. But it does provide the vast historical panorama against which such questions can be asked. From a degree of technicality, it is less technical than Beus and Morales' Grand Canyon Geology, but certainly well beyond Price's Introduction to Grand Canyon Geology. In the preface, Baldridge says his target audience is "upper level undergraduates and graduates." I would expand this to include anyone with a real interest in the Colorado Plateau, and who wants the "big picture" only hinted at in most treatments of the region (like Baars' The Colorado Plateau: A Geologic History). For readers with a more casual familiarity with geology, it could be a difficult read, but the rewards are great for a comprehensive understanding of the area's history.
I liked it - a lot!
Geology of the American Southwest: A Journey Through Two Billion Years of Plate-Tectonic History.......2006-11-10
An excellent introduction to the geology of the American Southwest, including most of the Colorado Plateau in Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona, as well as parts of California (in particular Death Valley), Nevada, and Texas. All chapters devote considerable space to a discussion of the plate tectonic settings and paleogeography of the geologic period under consideration. The tectonic settings and processes are of central importance in understanding the amazing and extensive rock record being described. This book contains a host of useful maps, stratigraphic and correlative diagrams, and crisp images of many rock formations discussed in the text. For example, a figure on page 170 I found particularly useful displays a cross section of the famous Jurassic sedimentary rocks spanning the Arizona-Utah border (which is equally applicable to southwestern and far western Colorado), showing schematically but clearly the complex horizontal and vertical relationships, including unconformities, of the major Jurassic rock units present in what can be at times a confusing area of geological terrain. The geology of many of the National Parks and Monuments in the American Southwest, particularly Grand Canyon National Park, is interwoven very nicely with the overall theme and level of the book. All in all, a very useful reference covering 2 billion years of Earth history in this part of the United States, particularly appropriate for undergraduates and graduate students studying geology and the Earth sciences. An extensive bibliography, cited frequently in the text, provides many points of introduction to the supporting literature, and opportunities for further exploration. Undergraduates who plan on participating in a geology field camp in the American Southwest will no doubt benefit by reading this book before their departure.

For the past two hundred years, Western readers, young and old alike, have been transported to the fabulous Orient by means of these remarkable stories, in which the everyday mingles on an equal footing with the uncanny and the miraculous. As Good As or Better Than the Disney Version.......2005-03-03
This vast collection of folk tales from India and the Middle East known as "The Arabian Nights Entertainments" or "The Thousand and One Nights" is a framework of many tales that were told orally for centuries before finally being written down, so they are not attributed to any one author. "The Story of Aladdin, or The Wonderful Lamp" takes up about the first hundred pages of this 346 page book, and the rest of the book is filled with other great stories and illustrations which feature among others, "Sinbad the Sailor", "Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves", and "Prince Camaralzaman". Overall this book was extremely well written and entertaining, and I would highly recommend it for both children and adults alike. "The Story of Aladdin" is different in several ways from the Disney version but I liked it just as much or more. It is still the story of a poor boy who falls in love with the Sultan's daughter and with the assistance of a genie from a lamp wins her hand in marriage, but the thing I was most surprised to learn in this book was that Aladdin was actually Chinese, rather then Arabian as he is depicted in the movie. The Princess was also not called Jasmine, but Princess Badroulboudour. The Sultan is still her father, but Disney combines three of the book's characters (the African Magician, the Grand Vizier, and the Grand Vizier's son) to create their villain. There was no "Abu" the monkey, no flying carpets, and Aladdin although lazy, was no thief. Additionally there were several different types of genies in this book that inhabited quite a few things other then lamps. Rather than the nice blue version which Robin Williams plays of a genie in the Disney movie, in this book genies are considered to be big scary enslaved demons. Some also are more powerful than others. Depending on how powerful your genie was, rather than being limited to just three wishes, you could give him an endless amount of commands to carry out as long as you weren't ungrateful for the benefit you received in return for them. I was also surprised to see that Aladdin had a mother who played a big part in the story. From the movie you would think him to be an orphan. The tales of "Sinbad the Sailor" reminded me of the Greek tragedies. The stories were very good, but Sinbad seemed like a poor man's Odysseus from "The Odyssey" as he had to battle several monsters, and overcome several misadventures in order to return home. Just like Odysseus he even has to fight a Cyclops. I believe Sinbad takes seven trips in all and not once does he have a safe voyage. I would have thought after the third time this happened that all of the other sailors would have thought him to be a jinx and would have refused to have sailed with him, but for the sake of a good story I guess you have to ignore this type of oversight. I also think he should have been called "Sinbad the Merchant" rather than "Sinbad the Sailor" since he never actually sails any of these ships, but rather just travels upon them. There is always more than one captain who does the actual sailing. In one of the "Sinbad" stories when he is washed up on a desert island, just before he is about to die of thirst and starvation he is rescued by a "King Mihrage". I'm curious if this is where the term "mirage" originated from? There is also another Sinbad story in which the people he encounters have a custom for their married couples in that if one of them dies before the other, they still bury the living spouse with the dead one. I think this even covered in one of the Star Trek episodes I saw. I've never actually read the story of "Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves" until now, but for some reason I had always assumed Ali was the captain of the thieves. I was surprised to find out in the book that he is just a poor man who stumbles upon the thieves hideout by accident in the story and that he is just lucky they did not find and murder him for discovering their secret. The star of the story is actually one of Ali's slave girls named Morgiana who saves Ali on several occasions by outsmarting the thieves. There are four type of religions represented throughout this entire book. There are Mussulmans (which if I'm not mistaken are a type of Muslim), Persians (who worship fire), Christians and Jews. All of the main characters are Mussulmans. Since for the most part these are mostly short stories I'm torn whether or not to include them on my listing of the greatest novels of all time, but they certainly are worthy of note none the less.
captivating!!!.......1998-10-27
I never left my chair when I read this book. 5 stars, a winner.

Eastern stories that have captured the Western imagination!.......2001-07-03
The Tales from the Arabian Nights are ancient stories of romance, suspense, mystery, magic and adventure originating from Persia, India and Arabia, originally functioning as the daily entertainment of ordinary people. They are woven together under the premise that they saved the life of Shahrazad, a queen whose husband executed each of his new wives after one night of marriage. By beginning an exciting story every evening, but withholding the ending, Shahrazad was able to convince the breathless king to spare her for another day until the next installment. Of course, after 1001 nights of devious story-telling, she had saved her life forever.
First introduced to the Western world in the eighteenth century, these stories have attained great popularity, and been retold many times, with "Aladdin" even being made into a Disney film. This collection features only a small selection of the best and most popular tales. Unlike many editions, it doesn't reflect the contemporary versions of the stories, but seeks to be faithful to the authentic Arabic sources. N.J. Dawood is well-equipped to retell these stories from the original Arabic. Born in Baghdad, Dawood attained a reputation as a scholar and received a university education in London. Amongst other projects he has translated "The Koran" and a complete collection of "Tales from the Thousand and One Nights."
Because this version intends to be faithful to the original Arabic, readers should not expect a sanitized Western interpretation. If you are looking for a fresh style that brings these stories to life for children in a modern Western audience, this is likely not the edition for you. These stories are unashamedly Arabic in character, and the religious aspect (Islam) is dominant throughout, where health and wealth, wine and women are bestowed as the blessing of Allah for obedience. But despite this, these stories continue to capture the Western imagination. Expect to read stories about powerful genies (jinees), magical lamps, talking animals, distant voyages, and impossible adventures.
This volume (a companion to "Sinbad the Sailor and Other Tales from The Arabian Nights") contains the well-known stories of "Aladdin", and "The Ebony Horse". Also represented are the lesser-known but equally fascinating "Khalifah the Fisherman" and "The Dream". A great opportunity to read stories that have stood the test of time in another culture - these are classics, and make a good introduction to the original cultural flavour of "Tales from the Arabian Nights"!
