If you think that you're acting in unusual ways and feeling frustrated at work for no discernable reason...you may want to read this book. In it you'll find out what destructive narcissists do in the office environment, and it will convince you you're not imagining the slow drain of energy and increasing discomfort you feel! Brown's detailed descriptions not only of the work-related behaviors of destructive narcissists but also of the feelings these behaviors inspire in others is concrete and helpful. Especially useful is her delineation of the four response stages that you might feel when confronted with a destructive narcissist--she rightly identifies a process of initial elation, when the person is entirely focused on impressing you (I would call this the "honeymoon" period, which comes from the language of domestic violence), to confusion, self-doubt, and then overwhelming frustration. She then offers practical coping strategies that you can enact immediately and that really do work, whether your workplace narcissist is your boss or your colleague.
Just knowing that *you* are not overreacting or imagining things is the best reason for reading this book. This book appeared on the shelf when I most needed it. Although I would have liked to see a chapter dealing with how destructive narcissists can actually enlist the help of others in the workplace in their quest for control, in general I found this book very helpful and enlightening.

Very Good Book, Though it May be somewhat Outdated.......2002-07-16
I bought this book about ten years ago and it helped spawn ideas to help purchase a business. When I bought the book, I was able to find some immediate ideas. However, the key takeaway from the book is that you must be creative sometimes in order to overcome financing obstacles. Today, most of the techniques may seem simplistic, but the core idea of being creative remains the same. If you are looking for ideas to follow, hire a consultant or accountant. If you are looking for ideas to jumpstart your thinking about financing problems, read this book, jot down techniques that draw your interest and think about how they can be used today.

This is a pretty basic and simplistic introduction to small business finance. Many of the "tricks" revealed in it for raising money simply will not work in the real world.

The other Guerrilla books give hundreds of immediately useful tips. Things you can go out and do tomorrow. Ways to sneak in the back door, or fly under the radar.

I bought this book to help with an internet startup. I was useless! VC has evolved and this book is way off target with respect to what VC is doing today. If you are interested in the internet do not waste you time here.

The empirical research that tort law needs.......2004-07-18
For me as a European law professor this - admittedly somewhat outdated book - was very helpful in many respects: it showed me how thorough research on the tort process and its shortcomings is performed and it also convinced me that medical malpractice is quite different from say automobile accidents as far as the role of tort law is concerned. I think that this is a good book to read for anyone studying the tort process and evaluating the arguments for and against alternative patient insurance arrangements. I was a bit disappointed by the final chapter ('Ruminations for the future'), because the policy statements and suggestions for reform in that chapter are in my opinion not really firmly backed by the empirical evidence of the previous chapters.

Yet in the time since the first primates appeared millions of years ago, Africa has undergone profound alterations in physical geography, climate, and biota.
Linking the evidence of the past with that of the present, this exquisitely illustrated guide examines the evolution of the mammalian fauna of Africa within the context of dramatic changes over the course of more than 30 million years of primate presence. The book covers such topics as dating, continental drift, and global climate change and the likely motors of evolution as well as the physical evolution of the African continent, including present and past climates, and the major determinants of plant and mammal distributions. The authors discuss human evolution as a part of the larger pattern of mammalian evolution while responding to the unique interest that we have in our own past.
The meticulous reconstructions of fossil mammals in this book are the result of detailed anatomical research. Restorations of mammalian musculature and appearance take into account the affinities between fossil forms and extant species in order to make well-founded inferences about unpreserved animal attributes. Environmental reconstructions benefit from the authors' visits to more than a dozen wildlife preserves in five African countries as well as the use of an extensive database of published studies on the evolution of landscapes on the continent. A fascinating read and a visual feast, Evolving Eden lays the foundation for a deeper appreciation of contemporary African wildlife.

Africa, expecially as it appears to have been over time is probably the closest piece of land that might have been considered Eden.
For some 35 million years Africa has been the home of an ever widening number of animals. This beautifully illustrated work takes fossil finds, compares them with their closest living relatives and builds up what these animals probably looked like when they were alive.
The definition of animals in this book certainly includes humans and their African ancestors. More than just viewing the fossil remains, the built up people show a closer relationship to modern humans that just looking at the bare fossil.

This book is an introduction to the physics of highly excited, easily perturbed or interacting atoms. The book begins with a brief introduction to the traditional view of electron shells and their properties, and then goes on to discuss Rydberg states, quantum defect theory, atomic f-values, centrifugal barrier effects, autoionisation, inner shell and double excitation spectra, K-matrix theory, atoms in high laser fields, statistical methods, quantum chaos, and atomic effects in solids. The emphasis is throughout on radial properties, orbital collapse, many body effects, the breakdown of the independent particle approach, the emergence of chaos, and the behaviour of atoms inside clusters and solids. A very full account of autoionisation includes not only the standard treatment for isolated resonances, but also several alternative approaches. The book discusses many experimental examples and has many diagrams and a comprehensive reference list.

The authors present a number of efficient methods for the calculations in the theory of collisions of highly excited atoms and ions with neutral and charged particles and of spectral-line broadening of Rydberg atomic series in gases, low- and high-temperature plasmas, and astrophysics. Particular attention is paid to a comparison of the theoretical results with available experimental data.

If you are a newcomer to the genre, or teaching this area of American literature, you cannot do better than to read Valerie Rohy's elegant, informed introduction and enjoy the rich and varied selections choosen by Elizabeth Ammons and V.Rohy for this collection. Check out Mena's "The Vine Leaf," published nowhere else, as far as I know- an intriguing piece of fiction.
