Knowing only the least rudimentaries on geology, this book has been invaluable to this amateur rockhound. Easy to understand concepts. I'm reading this book without the benefit of classes and its still great!

Modern science emerged from seventeenth-century English society alongside another, equally extraordinary transformation - representative government. At the same time as the new political structure emerged from the turmoil, science coalesced into an organized body of knowledge, complete with an experimental method and an institutional base within the universities and the scientific societies. The figure of Isaac Newton and his science towered over the process, providing an overarching framework within which all other sciences of the age in turn developed. This book first introduces Newton and then examines what happened to his science as it was interpreted by his major followers. It also looks at the scientific culture that he helped to create and the impact that his ideas had on the rapidly developing technology that led to the Industrial Revolution, as well as to its effects on religion and Freemasonry. The authors draw widely on recent work that has produced a rich new understanding of the sources of Newton's natural philosophy, or science as it is known today. The resulting synthesis provides an account that is as valuable for students as it is of interest to the general reader.

What a terrific introduction to the origins of modern science! The authors have provided a balanced, lucid and engaging treatment of a pivotal topic in modern science and culture. The book falls into two parts. The first section provides a thumbnail sketch of Newton's life and scientific achievements, written with a talent for abbreviated grace. The second section shifts to the multifaceted impact of Newton's achievement and surveys the origins of both the Enlightenment and the First Industrial Revolution with panache. The authors, top scholars in their fields, have written an excellent, short book on a big subject for students and the general reader. It's just what we need but rarely get.

High School History of Science.......2000-08-17

Dobbs and Jacob provide a very good introduction to the history of science at a high school level. This is a rare thing in an academic discipline that, like many others, increasingly limits its audience to other specialists in the field. The chapters are well written and the book avoids being an excessively laudatory biography, despite its focus on one of the "Great Men" of science. If the book has one shortcoming it is that the chapters do not fit together well to form a coherent whole. It shows some of the roughness indicative of a cooperative work.

The Buccaneers.......2003-02-17

I read this book and also saw the TV movie a few years ago. I enjoyed the book very much. Very well written and I liked the ending as I couldn't see Annabelle with the stiff Duke. She belonged with Guy and they made a very adorable couple. In the movie , they changed some aspects of the book but it was still great. I recommend this book very much and the author who took over the ending due to the death of Edith Wharton did a commendable job. Well done.

The Buccaneers -- completed by Marion Mainwarning 1993.......2002-10-13

It's a shame that Marion Mainwaring took such liberties with Edith Whartons style The closing of her stories was always in another direction. And usually not a happy one.
Edith had she lived, I believe would have had the Brief Love Affair between Guy and Annibel end at Laura Testvalleys family home with a sad but brief good-bye; Annibel to Amrerica and Guy to where ever. Laura succeeds in achieving a safe harbour for her well deserved ending. And the Duke is still the Duke and that's bad enough. This ending was unfitting a good storyteller as Edith Wharton was.
