1 out of 5 stars disappointed - not the bob bly quality of old.......2001-08-01

bob bly has written a lot of great books. this is not one of them. i have bought and read most of his books. this one is not up to bob's usual quality.

i have learned a lot of useful things from his other books, but not this one. the little content that had potential did not tell me how to actually use his advice. much of it was unusable by normal people and almost seemed like padding to a magazine article to stretch it to a book.

this book stated the obvious things to do but did not tell how to do them. any time management 101 book would tell more than this book.

some of his advice is similar to the simple-minded simplicity books that would have you using the same towel all week to save laundry. obviously bobs stuff works for bob but we are not bob -- we are us and he should tell us stuff that works for us.

bob works hard and is very successful. but i do NOT want to work hard -- i want to work smart. i just want to know how to get the most out of the time i do work because i plan to have some BALANCE to my life and some fun too not just use every minute to make money.

if bob had just explained all of his lists and how he uses them then the book might have been worthwhile. as it is, it seemed like he ground out another book to make money. the quality of the content was just not up to his earlier books.

if you want to use your time more efficiently then read get control of your time and your life by alan lakein.

bob has some 5star books this one is barely one star.

5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2001-02-17

Robert W. Bly's helpful, amusing and slim volume is jam-packed with wisdom and plenty of tips to help you organize, manage your time better, cure procrastination and increase your productivity. While some of his advice is plain old common-sense information that you've probably already heard, it may well bear repeating. Just one look around your office may show you how many people have heard some of this counsel before but are still hopelessly disorganized time wasters. Bly includes pertinent data from surveys of leaders and working stiffs who feel overwhelmed by information, too many demands on their time and the constant struggle to fit 25 hours of work and real life into a 24-hour day. He also sprinkles witty and instructive quotes throughout the book, which we at getAbstract.com recommend to anyone who'd like to have a little extra time left over (and that's everyone).

This is an excellent criminal law textbook tailored specifically to California. Each section has practice problems ensuring that you get a full understanding of the material. Also, the introductions to each section give you an excellent overview of the basic ideas and reasons for each case being included. This is the one textbook where I don't skip over the "notes" sections. I won't be selling this book back at the end of the semester.

            Description:
The direct discharge of wastes from agricultural fields and livestock feedlots increases the concentration of nitrogen (N) in streams. This study was conducted to determine the impact of farm N budgets on stream water quality. In 1999-2000, we investigated an experimental livestock farm of 457ha in the Kepau River watershed in Shizunai, Southern Hokkaido, Japan, where grasslands and maize fields account for 33% of the farm's total area. Annual N flow was calculated on the basis of the farm's land management records. Livestock was supplied with 15.2tNyr^-^1 from agricultural lands, which made the farm 81% self-sufficient. Livestock excreta produced 17.2tNyr^-^1, of which 4tNyr^-^1 was lost, probably by ammonia volatilization during decomposition. Apart from manure, the major N inputs were 9.1tNyr^-^1 of chemical fertilizers, 6.4tNyr^-^1 of atmospheric deposition, and 12.6tNyr^-^1 biological N fixation. The major outputs were uptake by forest vegetation of 11.0tNyr^-^1, denitrification of 1.5tNyr^-^1, and livestock feed production. Consequently, the annual surplus N on the whole farm was estimated to be 12.7tNyr^-^1, which corresponds to 28kgNha^-^1 of agricultural land. The annual N load from the farm to the Kepau River was measured at 14.4tNyr^-^1. Ninety percent of this load, however, occurred during rainfall and spring snowmelt. Within one 2-week snowmelt period, 5.0tN was discharged, which corresponds to 35% of the annual load. Although the average N concentration of stream water below the farm was 2.8mgNL^-^1, the maximum concentration recorded during the snowmelt season was 13.5mgNL^-^1. The N concentration of the stream water increased and the silica (Si) concentration decreased as the stream flow rate increased. Consequently, the molar ratio of Si/N frequently dropped below 2.7, the critical level for the occurrence of eutrophication. The large N load during rainfall and snowmelt could be ascribed to open ditches, which collect tile drainage and surface runoff from the fields, discharging it directly to the river, bypassing the forested riparian zone.

Call me old fashioned, but I think you have to love any book that includes a map of the faults surrounding Virginia Lake. Oh, did I mention the photograph of the school bus caught in the 1983 Ophir Creek debris flow.
This book is subtitled Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology Special Publication 19, and it makes me want to run out and buy the whole series. The cover has a wonderful aerial photographic of the Truckee Meadows oriented toward the south, snow clad mountains disappearing into the horizon.
Did I mention that this book is cheap?

              Book Description

Introduction to Relativity is intended to teach physics and astronomy majors at the freshman, sophomore or upper-division levels how to think about special and general relativity in a fundamental, but accessible, way. Designed to render any reader a "master of relativity", everything on the subject is comprehensible and derivable from first principles. The book emphasizes problem solving, contains abundant problem sets, and is conveniently organized to meet the needs of both student and instructor.

              * Simplicity: the book teaches space and time in relativity in a physical fashion with minimal mathematics
              * Conciseness: the book teaches relativity by emphasizing the basic simplicity of the principles at work
              * Visualization: space-time diagrams (Minkowski) illustrate phenomena from simultaneity to the resolution of the twin paradox in a concrete fashion
              * Worked problems: two chapters of challenging problems solved in several ways illustrate and teach the principles
              * Problem sets: each chapter is accompanied by a full set of problems for the student that teach the principles and some new phenonmena

              Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars You Should Seek Alternatives.......2006-02-14

A previous reviewer of this book and myself were actually members of the same physics class at the University of Cincinnati that used this text. I believe I can speak for the entire class when I say that we were all disappointed and frustrated with this book.

Kogut simply does not explain things well. I had purchased "Special Relativity" by A.P. French at the same time I bought Kogut's book, and I was very glad I did. Time and time again I found myself going back and reading French instead of Kogut. (Kogut's was the required text for this particular course, while French's was an optional text.)

If you are seeking a book to read simply to try to learn a bit about relativity on your own, you should skip this book. If you wish to learn about Special Relativity, I think you would be far better served by French's book than Kogut's. Now Kogut does have a couple chapters at the end on General Relativity, whereas French deals strictly with Special Relativity. But if you want to learn General Relativity, I have to believe there are far better books for you to consult than Kogut.

If you are purchasing this book for use in a course on relativity, I strongly recommend you purchase an additional text to supplement your learning. I think you will find Kogut incredibly frustrating, and you will be looking forward to simply being finished with the book. French's "Special Relativity" may be an old book, but French's presentation is incredible. (I was equally happy with French's "Vibrations and Waves" the previous quarter, so I think it's safe to say French knows what he's doing.)

The only thing I will say I liked about this book is that Kogut has several nicely done Minkowski diagrams resolving the Twin Paradox. For that reason alone, I am giving the book two stars instead of one. But I just don't think a few decent pictures are reason enough to put yourself through having to read the rest of this book.

3 out of 5 stars it is okay..........2006-01-30

This book is not amazing... it is poorly written and very confusing. Although there are not very many good relavity books out there, if you buy this book you may need to buy a second book to help you understand the subject better.

Delivery was quick. The condition of the book was as described.
