After thumbing through this book, I came to the conclusion that it could be adequately replaced by a website with the same content. Actually, the website would be more promising. For it could be updated easily, and the companies it mentions would have links that go to them.

A book of this nature is primarily a reference. It's not like a novel or textbook, which many people still rightly prefer, for reasons of convenience or ease of reading. While you might indeed go through this book page by page, it is like the phone book. If you had to use a hardcopy of the latter, or an online query, what would you use? Likewise here.

This is another one of those little gems of the culinary literary genre that are equal parts memoir, philosophy and insightful humor essay on the human condition - and it all revolves around food, to tie it all together.

In this particular book, the setting is rural Nebraska, and the author is a teacher AND a popular humorist ... who teaches, writes, and laughs at length about all of the following subjects, in no particular order: anthropology, plains literature & folklore, native americans, camping, salvaging antique tractors, dogs, and (most relevantly to this book) FOOD.

Although organized in something akin to a stream-of-consciousness ramble on just about everything, from A to Z, the author manages to cover a lot of turf despite himself. It's packed with memories about camping and canoeing (fresh fish and wild asparagus), waxing poetic about smoke-curing hams, and little tidbits about friends, lovers, and food philosophy in general.

For instance: "Always pick peasant food - aristocrats eat mostly to impress other people; peasants eat to eat." <-- The more you learn about cuisines from around the world, the more the simple truth of that statement becomes not just apparent, but nearly universal. Peasant food generally *IS* better than aristocratic cuisine ... the primary exceptions being when aristocrats co-opt dishes of peasant origin (ex: lobsters, oysters and bouilibaisse are examples of peasant cuisine that have been elevated to aristocratic status). End of digression.

Anyway, this book is packed with clever observations, wry witticisms, and side-splitting tales, and is worth every penny of the cover price ... even if you can only find it new.

Not bad.......2005-08-01

Simply put, this book explores the connection between food and human relationships. To this end, Welsch divides the book into chapters about things such as drinks, meat, fruits and vegetables, and just general musings about meals.

Welsch combines anecdotes, recipes, and anthropological musings to create a sometimes enlightening, sometimes amusing, and sometimes boring book.

The problem I had with this book is that while it started with a bang, it ended with a whimper. The first 3 chapters are extremely amusing and filled with great anecdotes and recipes, and the rest of the book just degenrates into contemplative mush. As a result, I cannot really recommend it fully, but for those who love food and its connection to our lives, read the first few chapters.

Required reading.......1999-02-15

This book should be required reading for anyone who has ever: shared a meal, fallen in love, or had parents. This is true insight, delightfully written. Send your dad a copy.

Very Handy! A good investment!.......2005-05-21

Not only is it all orginized, neat, and made much cuter with the pictures and borders and such but it is all correct! I thought of saving myself some money by using online gaming sites but I was presented with wrong infromation that really messed up the nice pace I was moving at. Websites often also left out important details or somthiing like that. I found this book VERY HELPFUL in keeping my infromation clean, collected and fun! Enjoy!

Ok, I know that this guide has alot of secret info and all that but let's think for a second. it's $75!! FAQ's on the net (Especially Gamefaqs.com) have equal or greater than this information for FREE!
Sorry to be a critic but, seriously. Anyway, the game isn't that hard. I beat it completely and never used a guide. It's quite easy, even comparable to Animal Crossing.

So, think before you spend $75 on information you don't really need or can get for free. -_-

A Big Help.......2004-01-08

This guide is a huge help. I was a little lost when I first started playing but this book helped me learn all the little details. This book is most helpful for learning what the townspeople like and dislike. Which if you didn't know already you would use up alot of your hard earned money getting them gifts they might hate! Also it's helpful to learn the recipes. Some of the recipes in this book have still not been told to me from any of the characters. Have fun!

Excellent Book.......2002-06-08

When I first bought the game I had no idea on what to do. I tried playing it for a while before I knew about the book. It took me 5 games to play because I messed up on all of them, but when I bought the book, I read it over and used it along with the game. It helped me a whole lot. After using the book, my percentage was 100%. I had 10 chickens, 10 cows, and 10 sheep. They all had maximum hearts. All the Sprites had maximum hearts and I was married to Karen with maximum hearts and a child with maximum hearts. I thought I could never marry Karen. My farm was excellent, pretty, and worth working on. So I say to everyone who buys this game, buy the strategy guide. Without it, you can't figure out the game!!!!!!

Mostly compiled adverts for Cisco products .......2006-12-16

I actually bought this book a little over a year ago. I bought it for the promise of a good overview of Cisco internetworking. I was very disappointed with the book because it seems to be nothing more than a compiled source of protocol definitions and feature lists of various Cisco devices, without explaining how to use or configure them.
I will give the book some credit for having a pretty decent chapter on Wide Area Networking and Wireless networking. You would be better served to look for internetworking knowledge elsewhere.

OK book, but not a sole source..........2003-12-12

I found the book to contain too many errors, and the writing style was not user friendly (The book did not flow well). This book tries to cover many topics; some topics are covered very well, others fall far short. I do not recommend this book to anyone who is looking for solid reference guide. There are too many actual good books available out there.
