The book offers some good ideas,although its approach is scatter-shot and somewhat superficial. Excellent intro to accounting/finance for the novice........1999-08-30

As a new manager of a small/medium-sized nonprofit organization (20 staff), I needed to get up to speed quickly on accounting and finance principles, but didn't have time to take a course. This book was a great help. It's written in a conversation style, not in dry "accountant-speak," and gives the reader a good overview, with examples of all major accounting and finance concepts you are likely to run across. It even had a floppy disk with a variety of simple spreadsheets for you to learn from as you walked through each chapter. My only complaint was the spreadsheets on the disk are in an early form of Lotus 1-2-3, so those of us with Microsoft Excel have a hard time printing out these older documents cleanly (some of the formatting doesn't translate well).

Blast continues to be the most destructive fungal disease of rice despite decades of research devoted to its control. This book has been developed from a conference held in Madison, Wisconsin, in August 1993, and presents a comprehensive review of the current status of our knowledge of the disease and its management. The main focus is an examination of approaches to management by integrating basic knowledge about the disease with developments in rice biotechnology, biological control, breeding for disease resistance and indigenous agricultural knowledge. With recent progress in rice and fungal transformation and in the mapping and cloning of rice genes, the potential contribution of biotechnology is also assessed. The book consists of 33 chapters, divided into five main parts covering: pathogen biology; host plant resistance; pathogen population dynamics and utilization of host plant resistance; epidemiology, loss assessment and management; and farmers' perspectives. Six chapters by authors outside the rice research community bring different perspectives to bear on ecological, molecular, biological and sociological aspects of rice blast disease. This book presents state-of-the-art geophysical inverse theory developed in modern mathematical terminology. The book brings together fundamental results developed by the Russian mathematical school in regularization theory and combines them with the related research in geophysical inversion carried out in the West. It presents a detailed exposition of the methods of regularized solution of inverse problems based on the ideas of Tikhonov regularization, and shows the different forms of their applications in both linear and nonlinear methods of geophysical inversion. This text is the first to treat many kinds of inversion and imaging techniques in a unified mathematical manner.

The book is divided in five parts covering the foundations of the inversion theory and its applications to the solution of different geophysical inverse problems, including potential field, electromagnetic, and seismic methods. The first part is an introduction to inversion theory. The second part contains a description of the basic methods of solution of the linear and nonlinear inverse problems using regularization. The following parts treat the application of regularization methods in gravity and magnetic, electromagnetic, and seismic inverse problems. The key connecting idea of these applied parts of the book is the analogy between the solutions of the forward and inverse problems in different geophysical methods. The book also includes chapters related to the modern technology of geophysical imaging, based on seismic and electromagnetic migration.

In principle, infinitely many numbers are needed to specify that function, but in practice only finitely many measurements can be made. Inverse theory concerns the mathematical techniques that enable researchers to use the available information to build a model of the unknown system or to determine its essential properties. In Geophysical Inverse Theory, Robert Parker provides a systematic development of inverse theory at the graduate and professional level that emphasizes a rigorous yet practical solution of inverse problems, with examples from experimental observations in geomagnetism, seismology, gravity, electromagnetic sounding, and interpolation. Although illustrated with examples from geophysics, this book has broad implications for researchers in applied disciplines from materials science and engineering to astrophysics, oceanography, and meteorology.

Parker's approach is to avoid artificial statistical constructs and to emphasize instead the reasonable assumptions researchers must make to reduce the ambiguity that inevitably arises in complex problems. The structure of the book follows a natural division in the subject into linear theory, in which the measured quantities are linear functionals of the unknown models, and nonlinear theory, which covers all other systems but is not nearly so well understood. The book covers model selection as well as techniques for drawing firm conclusions about the earth independent of any particular model.

Not very accessible.......2004-02-16

Although this textbook contains some very useful material, I've found that it really isn't adequate as a textbook for a first course on inverse problems for graduate students in the earth sciences.

Students in my class found the presentation too theoretical, and couldn't relate the material in the book to their own research projects. In particular, many of them found that the book made use of too much advanced mathematics without adequate explanation. Many of the exercises in the book are extremely challenging, but there aren't enough relatively simple exercises to help students build confidence in their understanding of the material. In order to be prepared for this text, students need to have a strong background in linear algebra, numerical computing, and some understanding of basic ideas in functional analysis.

On the other hand, I've found this book to be a useful reference in my own research.

This book presents inverse theory in gradual steps with practical problems presented at each level. Chapter 1 provides a good theoretical basis for what follows so that the book is (reasonably) self-contained.

This is the first study to present simultaneously both deconvolution and inversion, two powerful tools of data analysis. Featured within this volume are various geophysical convolution models and a treatment of deconvolution for a time-varying signal. The single channel time-varying deconvolution is shown equivalent to the multichannel time-invariant deconvolution, thus a formalism and associated algorithms can handle both. Inverse theory as well as various inversion schemes are presented on the basis of a relationship between a small perturbation to the model and its effects on the observation. The information theory inversion scheme is discussed, and several types of norm of minimization presented. Additionally, concepts and results of inverse theory are applied to design a new deconvolution operator for estimating magnetization and density distribution, and the constraint of the Backus-Gilbert formalism of inverse theory is used to design a new prediction error filter for maximum entropy spectral estimates. Maximum likelihood, another high resolution method is also presented. This volume can be utilised as a graduate-level text for courses in Geophysics. Some chapters will be of use for graduate courses in Applied Mathematics, Applied Statistics, and Oceanography.

An excellent book for learning the basics of neutron scattering, which in the process teaches much about modern methods of quantum theory applied to condensed matter. Squires provides the simplest and most concise treatment of this material I have ever seen.

This book provides a fairly comprehensive overview of the basic theory of neutron scattering, offering some experimental examples. Much of the mathematical rigor associated with formal scattering theory is dispensed with, making it a good introductory level reference.

You dont need to love a dog to enjoy this book, but if you dont have a dog now, when your done you may want one!!! I purchased this book because I have a passion for bird hunting, loyal dogs and a good book that refers to both and this book does just that. There are many short stories in the book, some may even bring a tear to your eye. Definetly worth the read.
