1 out of 5 stars atrocious!.......2003-05-28

What is the first rule of resume writing? Make sure your grammar, spelling, and formatting are impeccable. If you can't do that, an employer is not going to bother to look at the details to see if you have the qualifications they need in an employee. Someone should have told Dr. Merhish that the same holds true for writing a book. Why would I waste my time taking advice from a book that contains inexcusable errors like this: about half of the pages have more than one page number; chapters are listed in the table of contents that are omitted from the book; page numbers in the table of contents are wrong; chapter numbers in the table of contents do not match the actual chapter numbers; grammar and punctuation are horrendous. And to top it off, the title is completely misleading - of 190 pages in the book, 4 are on writing a resume and 3 resume examples are offered.
This book may have some valuable information hidden away somewhere within its pages, but I couldn't get past the shoddy workmanship to find out.

This is one of the worst resume books I have ever seen! It is poorly written, formatted atrociously, resume examples are awful (and there are no where near 7,0001 examples). Don't waste your money! I'm sorry that there are no options to give this a minus star rating.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent survey of past and current audio amp designs.......1998-12-18

Very clearly written survey of the art of audio amplifier design over the last 50 years. Covers early tube amps, including classic McIntosh, Quad, Williamson, Ultralinear examples as well as OTL designs. Superb review of evolution of transistor amps from early efforts evolved from tube designs, 60s quasi-complementary designs, 70s differential amps with full complementary output, 80s MOSFET applications. Many examples dissected, and plenty of theory but not a cookbook for making amps. Does overlap some of his earlier books, so if you have them you may not find a lot of new content. Overall, best current survey on this topic around, clearly written by an expert, a pleasure to read cover to cover if you are fascinated by audio amplifier design.

4 out of 5 stars An enjoyable if imperfect Star Trek compendium.......2004-08-18

I received this book as a Christmas gift from my parents in 1995, the year it was first released. I was quite happy to get it too - I have read it cover to cover no less than five times. Being a huge fan of the series (all of them!) I have found the book quite diverting. As mentioned in the other reviews here the book contains synopses of all of the episodes of both the classic original series and its successor 'The Next Generation'. The movies are covered here as well right up to the first big screen appearance of the TNG crew in 'Star Trek: Generations'. The information is as accurate as one could expect this type of 'prattle' to be; this is not a knock on the book but rather a valid point as I will explain later on.

The few reviews that appear here may or may not be a testament to "Captains' Logs" popularity among fans of the TV and/or movie series. Most of the Star Trek books, collectibles & memorabilia have their staunch defenders - no matter how 'cheesy' the item(s) might be. Perhaps the answer to the reluctance of fans to come to the defense of this book can be answered right here on this webpage. As one of the reviewers here summarized, what the book constitutes is no more than a glorified fanzine. And honestly, I could understand someone being disappointed with the contents of the book. If you had regularly read the publications or subscribed to 'Starlog' and 'The Next Generation' magazines, then you've definitely been exposed to most of the information here. It may not be firsthand information but having it all gathered here in one compendium sure makes it indispensable. Besides that the episode guides are handy and the background info on the TNG episodes is especially entertaining. But I thought the best parts of the book are the sections on the short-lived Saturday morning animated series and the busted television revival series. The animated series was much maligned during its two season run (the fall of both 1973 and 1974) and quickly forgotten. I was glad to have the history and genesis of this program; I always felt that these episodes provided a way to do things that couldn't be done on the live action series due to budget constraints. It's also interesting to note the fact that some of the episodes written for the busted TV revival series showed up on 'The Next Generation' in one form or another. One of the other episodes written about here for that same never-was TV series sounds remarkably similar to a 'Star Trek: Voyager' episode.

Now I want to explain what I meant when I used the word 'prattle'. Much of the information following the single episode synopses are really no more than 'sound bites' from the actors or production staff seemingly given at the time of production. While a good portion of the book is based on research many of the statements attributed here are transcribed from audio tapes of interviews that the authors conducted over a ten year period. That's not to say many articles that were previously published carried much of the same information. And seeing it here again would be considered a weakness by fans who regularly read the magazines I mentioned before. But I think we can all agree that we (the fans of Star Trek) can appreciate having this volume in our libraries. There are other books available dealing with each of the series on an individual basis and they are great in their own right. But the authors were right to conceive of this project and to try to demonstrate the continuity of the Star Trek universe. How well they succeeded is up to each individual's interpretation.

The main drawback to the book I thought was the proliferation of photos used throughout. The choices of some still photos that accompany the episode synopsis of some stories just boggle the mind - if you've seen the book you know what I mean. Some of them have no reason to be here at all, some have no discernible significance whatsoever. They're just from the surplus of publicity photos that seems inexhaustible in Hollywood. I do however value the reproductions and stills of many of the Star Trek inspired magazine covers that appear mainly towards the end of the book. Some of the featured covers are from popular juvenile publications like 'Cracked' and 'MAD' magazine; others are from more traditional pop culture magazines like 'TV Guide' and 'Entertainment Weekly'; and yet still others from the internationally respectable 'TIME' and 'LIFE'.

An update is inevitable - and in fact there is a publication available titled "Captains' Logs Supplemental" by the same authors. I haven't yet read the book and I don't know how much of the later 'Deep Space Nine' and 'Voyager' series are covered, but I'll still be curious enough to get a look at it when the opportunity arises. I do beg the authors to do one thing though before going to publication once again: please, please, please get someone to copyedit your manuscript!

                1 out of 5 stars A giant fanzine.......2001-06-29

This book is cut and paste writing at its worst. Transcripts from previous interviews and pictures from conventions and old movies are the basis of this book; which translates into a giant fan magazine with all the problems associated with that label. By trumpeting "Unauthorized" you get the feeling the authors have some behind the scenes info, but after looking at a picture of Deforest Kelly in a western in the middle of a synopsis of season one; you realize "unauthorized" means unprofessional. If you need an episode guide, this is complete, but you can probably find the same info a million other places.

                4 out of 5 stars A required addition for the die-hard Trekker.......2000-07-31

Captain's Logs contains *very* detailed on some of the internal politics and strife during TOS (the original series) and TNG (Star Trek: The Next Generation), and several of the movies. (Because of the timing involved, there's not very much about DS9 or Voyager. This is covered in the supplemental volume.)

All of the episodes in TOS and TNG have a summary and most (>95%) have some behind-the-scenes arcana. There is surprisingly little "[actor] was also in [other feature]" type stuff, but rather juicier background on all of the writing and directorial changes.

While the honesty in stating "Star Trek 1 was terrible" is refreshing, it seems like the authors dwell more on the "problem" aspects of the show. For example, in discussing the episode "City on the Edge of Forever," the authors spend a much longer amount of time on the Harlon Ellison saga (Ellison writes the story, it gets butchered into an episode, both win awards, Roddenbery and Ellison at odds over credit).

The result is a less-than-flattering portrayal of Gene Roddenbery. (To be fair, I came away a greater awareness of and respect for Gene Coon and Rick Berman.)

Overall, a worthy read for the die-hardest Trekker.

4 out of 5 stars Only for passionate Trekkers.......1998-07-03

This book is indeed, long and lenghty! To my amazement, it has "behind the scenes" of EACH episode of the Next Generation and Original Series. When the book was published, Voyager just came out and it talks about it for a chapter or so. Deep Space Nine also got a litte recognition from the writers, but don't expect too much. A BIG plus is the many, many pictures it has. Mostly from conventions and such. Unfortunately, the author might have fallen asleep while writing some sections because a few pages were repeated right after each other. All-in-all, it's pretty good, I'm thinking about getting the sequel, Captain's Logs Supplemental.

4 out of 5 stars Nostalgic about things which require thought.......2000-05-14

This is one of the best books to acquire for a fan of D&D, but for somewhat strange reasons:

                      - this book is not recommended for its pictures, which look, feel, and are poor. Quite gory, too (that is, as gory as one can get with very small pencil drawings);

                      - this book isn't recommended for the text; the text here is even worse than in the old monstrous manuals - if you study the entries you will be able to clearly determine which paragraphs went into which blank on the original entry forms (did I tell you that all of the creatures in this book were submitted by fans of the game?). Most aren't quite complete, and some ramble on and on and on and have totally unnecessary percentile tables and other things that obviously waste space.

This book is, however, gratuitously recommended for the complete "alienness". No game company makes this sort of thing nowadays. None of the creatures are campaign-related, they are totally up for grabs, they are easy to apply to whatever paper-and-pencil RPG you play, and the sheer good-natured amateurity that harkens from the old days of role-playing this book radiates in all directions is simply overwhelming.

A few warnings: this book is moderately rare and runs for around $30 in a tolerable condition - kinda expensive for some 100 pages. Don't buy this book if you're new to the hobby. You will not understand what's so good about this thing and you will feel cheated out of you money. Thee are plenty of better RPGs and accessories out there than this. And, lastly, buy this book only if you feel creative - be willing to resort to such barbaric means as using your creativity and improvise - that's the way things were done a long time ago.

5 out of 5 stars Oldies but Goodies.......2000-04-01

This is perhaps one of the greatest encyclopedia of monsters there is. It is short but incredible to spice up any campaign, low or high level. The artwork is not the greatest but the content makes up for it all the way. I would definately recomend it to any serious gamer.

This is the perfect study guide to help you pass the first exam in Microsoft's four core OS exams - Installing, Configuring, and Administering Microsoft Windows XP Professional (Exam 70-270). With this book, you can master the skills and concepts necessary to address exam objectives including planning, installation, configuration, administration, support, security, and troubleshooting of Windows XP Professional. It teaches how to analyze Microsoft's trick questions and distracters by providing practice exam questions arranged in a format similar to the actual exam. This book is not intended to teach new material. Instead it assumes that you have a solid foundation of knowledge but can use a refresher on important concepts as well as a guide to exam topics and objectives. This book focuses exactly on what you need to get past the exam - it features test-taking strategies, time-saving study tips, and a special Cram Sheet that includes tips, acronyms, and memory joggers not available anywhere else. The series is supported online at several Web sites: examcram.com, informit.com, and cramsession.com. This ebook does not include the CD that accompanies the print edition.

4 out of 5 stars Good review before test day!.......2007-01-05

I would recommend this book to anybody that is about to take 70-270. I would say a word of caution though about this book. It is truly intended to be a suppliment to actual training from either a interactive self-paced class like Test Out or Prep Logic. If you try to pass the 70-270 with this book alone you may run in to difficulty. Also, I would recommend exam insurance from Microsoft if your testing center allows it.

                      3 out of 5 stars A good start for 26 bucks.......2006-12-06

This book provides a real good start with less than 500 pages. But you will never pass the test just from the material in this book. Taking the advice of others before me, I obtained all the info I needed from this book, plus the Windows XP resource kit (available free online or in paperback) and "Changes to Functionality in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2" (Also an online microsoft resource).

                      5 out of 5 stars Awesome Book!.......2006-09-09

This book helped me to pass the 70-270 test. It had some information that I did not see anywhere else. I have used cram exam books before and I love the series. I would recommend this book and others for anybody studying to pass any tests. Awesome book!

4 out of 5 stars Hit or Miss but Ultimately Useful.......2006-04-10

Overall, I find this particular book useful in combing through a lot of intricate details of the Windows XP operating system. Though given that, I don't think this resource alone will help you adequately prepare for the exam, which is something the authors themselves note. This book I feel tries to strike a middle ground, but fails in a few regards:

                      (1) As many topics like IPP printing is inadequately covered, readers will not be able to install and configure, IPP for example, with the scant coverage.

                      (2) There is over emphasis on tools like that are not apart of Windows XP, like USMT and RIS. I have never come across such questions in the exam.

                      (3) Material is not aligned with the actual Microsoft study material, and as such important topics are inadequately covered, omitted, or over covered.

The bottom line is that you might be spending more energy studying unnecessary material, while at the same time, not studying key concepts and topics needed to pass the exam. One definitely needs additional material to study and pass the exam, but still despite my grief this book did actually help me, and rigorous relentless study combined with actually tinkering with Windows XP on material related to the book, did help me pass the exam. I am now a Microsoft Certified Professional.

Having passed my MCSE NT 4 exams using the Exam Cram guides, I knew that getting my 2003 MCSE would be no different. This is the first exam I have taken for my 2003 MCSE and I'm glad I picked up this book. It totally prepared me for the exam with the exception of an exam simualtion. I would say, however, that this book gave me 80-90% of what I needed to pass the exam. To sum it up, I will be going to the bookstore tomorrow to buy more Exam Cram books to finish out my quest to get my 2003 MCSE.

There are too many easy questions, many errors, and the explanations to the answers tell you little more than the obvious. For the price, it's not a bad way to get a bunch of questions though.

I bought this book and read it over a two week period and passed my exam with flying colors. I can't begin to tell you how awesomely well this book prepared me for the exam. I scored almost 900 out of 1000 from reading this book and doing a couple of practice exams, nothing else just the book and practice exams. The chapter on monitoring and remote access is awesome. There is nothing wrong with this book. This book is a hole in one, a bulls eye, a pefect compliement to your experience and know how. Just make sure that you read it cover to cover. To pass this exam follow these simple steps.

                      1. Read this book cover to cover
                      2. Take a few practice exams. Make sure you get an 800 or higher on your practice exams, that will give you wiggle room just in case the test proves harder than you expected.
                      3. Take your real test. That's it nothing else.

If you want to pass your exam... Then use this book.
