1 out of 5 stars Stay away from 5th Edition.......2004-01-06

BAD BOOK! Not necessarily the material (although as previous reviews have correctly noted, it's no 5 star), but I would like to address the 5th Edition, hard back BOOK published by Prentice-Hall. My book has publishing errors & is poorly constructed. For example, Appendix G, which is solutions to select problems, is apparently the answers for an earlier edition - they make no sense. The book's binding is falling apart. I've had to glue mine up in order to hold it together. Now this is a new, $100+, hard back, text book! I contacted the local Prentice-Hall Rep. for my school 3 weeks ago & still no help. Save your $ on this 5th edition, if you have any other options, until Prentice-Hall corrects their quality control publishing problems (& until they "step up to the plate" & correct problems when they've goofed!).

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not structured properly; lacks detail.......2003-09-13

The book is good but only if you're gonna use it in conjunction with class notes or if you want to read it twice. The content (just the 8085 processor) is good. Everything is well explained. The structuring of the book isn't too great. You'll run into the same thing at three different places and all explained at different details. So it gets irritating at times. Also, the level of detail about the peripheral chips (even for the standard chips - only one has been explained in length, the others just find a mention) isn't too great. Maybe Gaonkar assumed that one would have access to the Intel manuals. I don't know how it works with the other books on this topic, but this book isn't exactly 'the' reference book for somebody working with the 8085, because you'd have to keep using other books or Intel manuals .

3 out of 5 stars This book is seriously lacking.......2001-04-20

Why others are giving this book, 5 Stars, I have no idea... Very few books are worth that rating, and this book sure as heck does not even come close. As an introductory text, the book must be evaluated from 2 perspectives (1) Hardware, and (2) programming of the 8085. As a hardware book, I give it 4 stars... It really is a thorough book; but unfortunately it's somewhat disorganized and sometimes lacking in the needed details. Although some might call the book "dry" (is there such a thing as a microprocessor book which isnt???? I've never seen one), the author is fairly clear and has an easy to understand writing style. The MAJOR PROBLEM WITH THIS BOOK... is that the index, is without question, one of the worst indexes ever compiled in any book I have ever read... It's a tragedy... rediculous. When your taking a microprocessor course, oftentimes you want to look little details up; well... 5 times out of 10, you are NOT going to find it in the index.... so basically your going to end up looking through all 800 pages 1-by-1 if you really seek an answer. FROM THE SOFTWARE PERSPECTIVE, this book sucks. The word "suck", is self-descriptive and needs little further clarification. If you are already familiar with assembly language programming.... this won't be a problem for you... If your like most undergrad students who have never had the pleasure of taking ASM, then your professor had better be especially on his/her toes.... because this book itself is absolutely horrible as a teachig aid for ASM. Basically, the problem is simply that the programming content is so "skimpy" and "noncoherent," that I imagine that it would be very difficult to write so much as a 10 line program unless you had another book to consult with... By skimpy... I mean that the book is just plain lacking in content... it's 95 percent hardware, and 5 percent programming.... Second, I say that it is incoherent, because the examples which they give in the book are rediculously non-thorough... The author will say "here is how to sort 5 items in a list"... and might add "this is called a bubble sort".. and then thats it!!! That's absurd!!!! You could write an entire 1000 page book just on sorting.. and thats the best this guy can do.. "this is called a bubble sort"... The author doesn't even bother to explain what bubble sort means, nor does he explain that there are dozens of other sorts you can use which may or may not be more efficient for a given task. Basically, in summation, as a programming book... this sucks royally. If your an undergrad; take an ASM programming course first... or get a seperate book on ASM (it doesnt even have to be an 8085 book.. any ol' ASM book will do, just to explain some of the basics of assembly programming.... because this book is wholley inadequate in that respect.)

2 out of 5 stars exhaustive, but extremely dry.......2000-06-23

We had this book for our undergraduate course and found it to be extremely disappointing as a learning aid. The author has taken great pains to provide a exahustive coverage, but this book lacks coherence in content and is extremely dry. The book is poorly organized. The author at many places simply puts data sheets and diagrams with no adeaquate explanation. If you have previous background in Microprocessors and want a comprehensive reference this book is for you. If you are a student getting a first introduction to Microprocessors, look somewhere else.

5 out of 5 stars A very comprehensive, good introductory text........1999-04-29

I highly recommend this book to any instructor teaching an introductory microprocessor course. The 8085 is a excellent processor to start students in microprocessor theory. Its addressing is very straight forward, while its instructions set is similiar to that of X86 type processors. The Primer Trainer (featured in the book) is a great tool for practicing the programming and interfacing techniques brought forth in the book.

            Book Description

Only by adopting a new style of high-performance union management can labor recover and revitalize itself, says Thomas A. Hannigan, a 40-year member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. His book offers a practical, common sense understanding of how a successful management works and how it can be used in day-to-day union activities. For the first time, he links the nine basic union functions to the four basic management functions. Written specifically for union officers and upcoming leaders, the book provides them with a way to translate material customarily directed to business executives into language that labor people can understand and put to immediate use. The book also offers a potent alternative to today's slice and slash, centralize and downsize union style of management. In addition, it offers a blueprint for building new unions and making labor more effective, not only for its own benefit, but also for the benefit of American society. An important, readable, unique text for people at almost all levels of union administration and industrial relations. Students will be exposed to an entirely new dimension of the American labor movement. Hannigan redefines unions to focus attention on the interests of workers in the workplace, and on the importance of providing a sense of community between members of unions, between unions and other unions, and between unions and government. He maintains that a style of democratic, participative management will breathe new life into unions, and that a better understanding of management responsibilities by union leaders is essential for labor's survival as an effective representative of workers in the new American workplace. High-performance union managers will be able to explore, develop and use new technologies, and to build strong, autonomous, democratic, value-based, and mission-driven locals. Managing Tomorrow's High-Performance Unions includes innovative concepts such as the membership and leadership depth of participation models. It also proposes the creation of a new AFL-CIO executive board to lead organized labor into the 21st century, an institute for managing labor organizations, social research departments, lifetime membership, expanded membership bases, and the intense use of what Hannigan calls "enabling technologies." He sees adminstrative and support centers as practical alternatives to union mergers.

5 out of 5 stars Introduce yourself to Speed.......2006-06-17

Timothy "Speed" Levitch is a creative maelstrom. After reading Speedology, I have never felt so utterly alive and ready to overcome fear in my life. It has made me hunger to visit New York to see the world through the literary eyes I have been given as well as a need to think, feel and express more than I previously have. The poetics and spiritual reflection are superb to the point that even an atheist or skeptic can find utter beauty in them...the question of god is irrelevant, as the book is about Cruising with one's self. The oxymoronic idea of "spiritual non-belief" kept floating through my mind as I read and yet it made total sense.

This is a book that is difficult to categorize. It wants to be a New York guide book, but also speaks a great deal about Western and Eastern Philosophy, performance art, tantra and much more. It is perhaps best to consider this the colors of life using New York City as its canvas. Breaking down the ideas that are taken for granted today (money, sex and sexuality, freedom, fear, materialism, etc.), Speed shows us just how connected we can be through discovering, loving and then shattering our own alienation. I can only hope to be a fraction of the creative creature that Speed Levitch is, after all, we are all members of the exuberant party, the Cruise that is the world.

It is a sorry state of things that this book is priced the way it is from second hand dealers. The publisher, Context books, is indeed out of business, but $60 dollars is a ridiculous crime. Look for your profit in $25 at best. It should be enjoyed by those who want to read it, not just by those who can afford it. I found my copy at Strand Books out of New York, the only company that had a copy priced as a book and not as an antique.

5 out of 5 stars The Speed Experience.......2006-04-03

Speedology: Speed on New York on Speed is really superb. the title suggests where the book goes: Speed tours you through a few of his guided tours of NYC while imparting life lessons, yoga lessons, and smiles. It's a fast read, like on speed, but there's no actual speed. Speed is just the author's moniker. Speed speeds you through NYC giving you a little bit of history, mystery, and nowstory. If you've never let Speed sleep on your couch, you really should! Ask Speed about his Shakesphere evenings too. -I am curious why copies of this book, which were 16 bucks new, are listing on some websites, unsigned by the author, not first edition, and they're listing for 700 bucks? what's up with that. Who's gettin rich THERE?

5 out of 5 stars A true journey of the mind and the streets of NY.......2004-03-30

I have had the pleasure of crusing with Speed in New York last year and I bought my copy from him. (Sorry AMAZON) He is an artist. Of what, I don't really know, but that's the beauty of Speed. Time with him on our cruise is genuine, funny, endearing, educational and most of all precious. His book Speedology, is not just a tour guide, it is this psychatrist/poet's interpretaion of New York and it's many layers itself.
A note to Speed: Coming out this summer. Hope to catch up with you again.

                  Cavaliere

5 out of 5 stars Lots of Fun.......2004-03-23

This book is lots of fun. Chock full one great one-liners and thoughtful analysis. It points out beauty and absurdity in what most regard as banal. As a native new yorker it was really cool to read a new perspective on The City. Highly recommended.

                  5 out of 5 stars brilliant.......2004-02-20

The words literally jump off the page, attacking your psyche and opinions, demanding you to think and rethink everything you've ever thought. Speed challenges you with every word to redefine your very existence and to live joyously. "materialism is the utilization of the fear of other people's opinions" The world is a joyful place, take part! stop reading this! go out and live!

4 out of 5 stars Don't understand all the negative reviews.......2005-07-29

First off, I purchased this book as I am taking a course in Relational Database Design using Oracle 9i. I had labs to do that involved setting up user accounts, giving/revoking permissions to tables, etc. THe "Complete Reference" didn't have the necessary information--some but not all. This book--the DBA Handbook--had more complete information that quickly gave me me the information that I needed to answer the questions. I must admit that I shyed away from it at the beginning of the course because I read all the negative comments here. But I am glad that my desperation (because the Oracle product documentation was absolutely no help) pushed me to go to nearest Borders to check it out before purchasing it. I am happy with it.

2 out of 5 stars Can Oracle DBAs work with these types of Handbooks?.......2005-07-21

It is a good compilation of Oracle DBA 9i functionality. When it comes to using for real DBA work, I find it nearly impractical. One can not cover every little detail in a book like this to call it a handbook. With information available from software provider, books need to be written in much simpler manner rather than regrugitating what already exists.

I am more of an Oracle training manuals person which gives many specifics around various concepts and commands. I basically classify basic DBA knowledge at four levels(see below). You can basically control database behaviour at the system level(ALTER SYSTEM) or at the session(SET) level and some programmatically using Oracle supplied(DBMS) packages. Once you understand this idea, you can expand knowledge of various parameters and commands by simply searching them in Oracle documentation and using them as needed. Offcourse I do expect DBAs to know about Oracle architecture. Well can someone write a book in 100 pages that acts as a good starting point rather than redundant reference.

                    Four Levels:
a)Oracle Software Level(Installing, Patching etc.), Universal Installer teaches you a lot. Knowing OMF and OFA is recommended. Understanding Architecture.
b)Oracle System/Database Level: Setting parameters at instance level, creating control files, parameter files, tablespaces and altering them. Oracle Database Configuration Assistant and OEM can help you here.
                    c) Control at session level using SET command.
                    d) Backup and Restore: SQLLoader, Export, Import, RMAN utilities, Operating System Backups.
Tuning issues fall under b and c category.

Hope this helps. I tried using the reference, not very successful in what I wanted to do. Price wise the book is a deal.

2 out of 5 stars This is NOT a DBA handbook.......2005-01-12

This book falls far short of being a DBA handbook. It is more useful to someone who needs to "get by" for a few weeks while their DBA is away.

It is ok at showing you how to "do things" in some cases (hence 2 stars). But, if you need to work backwards (i.e you might want to query dictionary tables to find out where something lives and why) then this book is almost useless. I am an experienced Oracle DBA and decided to write this review after referencing this book 10 times in the past week and not finding any help at all from this book in each case. The index is worse than useless.

This books title should have been "a DBA overview"

2 out of 5 stars explanations far too short USELESS AVOID.......2004-09-16

I have 2y. experience on Ora8i & 9i.2 on windows 2000 and winXP german platform. Bought tons of those fat & bulky Oracle books of all these gurus (Loney, Urmann, Trezzo, ...) including 9i reference books. A lot of money thrown out!

Oracle (9i) Universal Installer and oracle Enterprise Manager got more foolproof, I recommend to install w/o a book first & let the wizzard do the work. Oracle 10g should be even more "adaptive".

We had bought the official german translation Oracle Press/Hanser for a migration project from Sybase Adaptive Anywhere 7.0.4 to Oracle 9i.2. well, maybe everything is covered, but explanations are FAR too short.
example 1: the new feature pfile or spfile instead of init<...>.ora
This is not even a reference book! Just a waste of 2.36 inch (6cm) space on your bookshelf to say it straight.
example 2: book index lacks the keywords you are looking for

At least the book (german edition) is long lasting, nicely layouted and printed on decent quality paper. It doesn't fall apart as other Oracle paperbacks from Osborne/McGrawHill. Two stars for that.

All in all, if you are in deep trouble with your Oracle Database don't hope for help of these authors/gurus, i.e. no e-mail support.
Better get a free sign up to Technet (OTN) and save the money for a TOAD license. Or buy a book from Mike Ault.

Last but not least it's an outdated book (as of Sep 2004), Oracle 10g is out. it's a fast paced world.

                    4 out of 5 stars It's a handbook, not a study guide/replacement for Metalink.......2003-02-15

I'm an Oracle developer who has inherited admin responsiblities for a medium sized database/application. This book DOES provide the information necessary to do that.

I am pursuing the OCA/OCP track as part of this new responsibility and, as other reviewers have stated, this book does NOT act as a study guide by itself.

Additionally, it is NOT a replacement for Metalink for more subtle problems/issues.
