This is a nice collection of a variety of neural network-based applications in a varity of industries in particular financial and telecommunication. It is an overview of these business applications and the text describes high level technical descriptions of these applications without getting into too much technical details. These are real-world applications with different levels of business success in terms of revenue generation. As an example, "Falcon credit card fraud detection" application is a world-known software product, has 85% of payment card fraud detection market, and is currently protecting 450,000,000 credit/debit cards all over the world.

For those who are interested in nueral network technology, this book provides a helpful overview of successful applications of this technology in niche markets. It shows that money can be made by applying the technology smartly to particular applications and it is not just a technology on the shelf with no use. For the business readers, this is an excellent overview of applications of how an advanced technology such as neural nets can successfully be emplyed in solving real-world business problems in markets such as financial, telecommunication, etc.

I read Ms. McConchie's animal anecdotes over the years in a couple SF fanzines I subscribe to; her cat and geese stories were often hilarious, so when I found out that she had written two books--Farming Daze and Daze on the Land--about her adventures, I bought them both. And I'm looking forward to more stories--please!

Under the pseudonym of Elizabeth Underwood, Lyn McConchie (who is also known for the science fiction and fantasy novels she's written with Andre Norton), has written this hilarious series of tales about her experiences as a first-time sheep farmer. From her first introduction to a house "cow," to the aquatic habits of pigs, Ms. McConchie takes a humorous look at the behaviour of animals, as well as their human farmers.

This is not a work of fiction. Like James Herriott, it is more biography, and in her own inimitable way, Ms. McConchie gives the animals and people the vivid characterization that enlivens all of her work. I'd recommend this book for anyone from the ages of 10 to 110.

Critical effects in semiclassical light scattering, in which the standard approximations break down, are associated with forward peaking, rainbows, glories, orbiting, and resonances. Besides giving rise to beautiful optical effects in the atmosphere, critical effects have important applications in many areas of physics. Their interpretation and accurate treatment, however, are difficult. This book deals with the theory of these critical effects. After a preliminary chapter posing the problem of critical effects, the next three chapters on coronae, rainbows, and glories, are written to be accessible to a broader audience of physicists. The main part of the book then describes the results obtained from the application of complex angular momentum techniques to scattering by homogeneous spheres. These techniques lead to practically usable asymptotic approximations, and to new physical insights into critical effects. A new conceptual picture of diffraction, regarded as a tunnelling effect, emerges. The final two chapters contain brief descriptions of applications to a broad range of fields including linear and nonlinear optics, radiative transfer, astronomy, acoustics, seismology, atomic, nuclear, and particle physics. This book intends to convey the basic concepts and physical interpretations that emerge from the new approach, rather than the complete formalism.

It's a Nussenzveig's book->it's good!.......2000-10-28

I have studied Physics with the Nussenzveig's collection "Física Básica" (just avaiable in Brazil) and I can say he is a very good Physics Teacher, and better, a hardline Physics Teacher! His book on diffaction would not be different, and I think who wants to know what matters about diffraction should read this book!

The nonequilibrium Green function theory is described and used for the derivation of the quantum kinetic equations. Numerical methods for the solution of the retarded quantum kinetic equations are discussed and results are presented for quantum high-field transport and for mesoscopic transport phenomena. I recommend this book to anyone who wants an introduction to nonequilibrium Green function techniques. It is much more readible and up-to-date than Kadanoff and Baym's "Quantum Statistical Mechanics".

Wonderfully retold story of Odysseus.......2007-05-10

I read this book to my 7 year old, homeschooled daughter. Her children's choir is singing the story of Odysseus and this book brought the songs to life for her. She never wanted me to put it down. The language is sophisticated but she could follow the story and was entranced by it.

Homer for Children Today!.......2007-03-27

Ho hum--I will never get my 5th grader to read this tome--however moving the story line and imagery. It is too thick to easily add to a history block of Ancient Civilizations around the world. The language is too dated. The narrations dwarfs the action. The standard, for good youth literature today, requires writers to SHOW the meaning and NOT TELL IT.
Thankfully, author Geraldine McCaughrean wrote a wonderfully telling of GILGAMESH, so I turned around and ordered her retelling of Homer's THE ILLIAD and THE ODYSSEY which is titled, ODYSSEUS.

Does anyone want my copy of Padric's version. The cover art is great.

The Children's Homer.......2007-03-22

As a homeschooled child, I read this book when I was eight and thoroughly enjoyed it; now, at fifteen, I have just finished reading the original Iliad and Odyssey for the second time. Reading them made me realize how much The Children's Homer helped me, both in exposing me to the epics and giving me a basic overview of the story. My only complaint was that it lacked the strength and beauty of the original, but that is understandable.
I would also recommend The Greek Way (Edith Hamilton) as an excellent look into ancient Greek philosophy and philosophers. I read this in the same course as The Children's Homer and it has become my favorite history book-children will enjoy it, but parents had best let them read it to themselves; it is unfair for parents to monopolize children's books.

A classic brought to life even for children.......2007-02-27

Three cheers: for Padraic Colum, who was a natural storyteller and interpreter of the ancient myths; for Dover Publications, who offers this reprint and other classics dirt cheap (Dover editions are generally five bucks or less); and for the parent who loves these stories and can read them intelligently to young children.

Parents: there are many, many things in these kinds of stories that will not be self-evident to children if they are not explained: language, relationships, cause and effect, the Greek pantheon, etc. You must, as appropriate, stop and talk things over with your child. It will be a better reading experience for the both of you, and it will do wonders for your child.

My son, knowing that Odysseus was finally going to confront the wooers of this wife Penelope, was besides himself with excitement as the tension mounted. He did not mind at all the side diversions into other stories--by this time he understands that the ancient Greeks told stories within stories within stories (they didn't have TV! or the Internet!). His patience paid off, and Colum's description of the final scene was most satisfying. This, together with Colum's telling of the legend of the Golden Fleece, Jason, and the Argonauts (available in another Dover edition--see my Amazon review), are highly recommended as a superb introduction to these classic tales.

Most influential book of my childhood.......2007-01-29

As a kid, I loved this book.

As a young adult, I've gone to college and become a Classics major. Now I'm reading the Aeneid in Latin, and I've really begun to appreciate what a wonderful book this is!

I have no way of judging this book's suitability for "kids in general." For me, though, this book instilled a love of mythology and history that has stayed with me through my life so far. I strongly suggest it!

This book is full of information about Odsseus adventure so far. This is really one of those books in a series when they tell you about the other books. If you read this book you have to read the others in the series. It gives you an example of Odessus treachery at sea.
