5 out of 5 stars A good book for the novice oxyacetylene welder.......1999-05-12

If you don't know the first thing about welding, but want to learn, this is the book for you. The 100 page, well illustrated text discusses safety concerns, torches, metals, the operation of welding equipment, and the various techniques used to weld, braze, cut and solder steel, bronze, silver, and cast iron. The book's emphasis is on several ways to weld steel of different shapes and thicknesses with an oxyacetylene welding torch. Note that this book does NOT cover electric arc welding. The book appears to be designed to be used as a text for a high school vocational education welding class. The author assumes you know nothing, and even includes a chapter on using a ruler to measure metal. Each of the chapters has a few review questions at the end to "check your progress." Very helpful checklists covering such basic activities as lighting the torch and preparing the metal for welding are provided. It's a little scary to handle explosive gases, 6000 degree flames, and molten steel if you've never done it before. I knew nothing about welding when I got this book, but by using it as a guide, I can now confidently use a welding torch.

              Book Description

Nationally recognized scholars and practitioners examine opportunities in which services traditionally provided by local governments are offered by the private sector though a contract or are transferred to a private business completely. Many large U.S. cities have contracted services for many years. With the movement to rightsize governments in recent years there has been renewed interest by local governments in similar ventures. Privatization, in its many forms, is now seen as a viable alternative to traditional ways of providing public services and can bring substantial benefits to residents. With greater accountability being demanded and pressures on local officials to hold the line on or reduce taxes, efforts to find innovative service delivery methods will probably increase. Cities, such as Atlanta, Indianapolis, and Charlotte, are examples showing that contracts with private businesses can work to benefit all parties. Local officials must move ahead cautiously, and not all attempts at privatization or contracting have succeeded. Some cities, after an evaluation, have decided to provide services with municipal employees. The main issues underlying privatization decisions will be addressed conceptually so that practitioners and academics benefit from a review of the current thinking on the issues. At the same time, exemplary practices and case studies are included so that readers can understand how privatization and managed competition have been implemented in local governments. Special attention is paid to administrative questions that may arise during the implementation process. For example, ways in which cities have worked with employees who fear displacement because of the privatization process are described. The book breaks new ground by including references to recent innovations in public-private partnerships and describing how privatization may evolve in the future.

5 out of 5 stars The best book ever!.......2005-12-26

20 years ago I would sneak this book out of my older sister's room and sit on the floor of my bedroom enjoying the neat little tidbits and illustrations. I'm sure she noticed the drops of grape juice on the pages! Flash forward to Christmas Day 2005, I'm now 31, but the joy that came to my face the moment I opened the package and found this book staring back at me! DOn't know how or where she found it, certainly nowhere online, I've searched! this is a treasure that brought tears to my eyes! It will definitely be a family heirloom!

5 out of 5 stars A cherished book from my childhood.......2003-07-04

As a child in the early 1970s, I attended C. H. Bird Elementary in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, a modern school with superb facilities and teachers (tip of the hat to Mr. Frank Peot, best teacher I ever had). Bird School had an outstanding library, and my first lengthy encounters with Beverly Cleary, Laura Ingalls Wilder, and Charles Schulz were conducted there. But my favorite book in the entire library was "The Hodgepodge Book", filled with stories, jokes, games, and American folklore. I checked that book out countless times, fascinated with such things as advice on how to get rid of a sty (stand in the middle of a crossroads and recite "Sty, Sty, leave my eye; go to the next one passing by.") and the amazing knuckle calendar (to keep track of the long and short months of the year). I thought it was the greatest book in the world, and perhaps for that time and place, it was. This book reminds me of a time, long ago, when I was young, a East Coast city boy experiencing the rural Midwest for the first time. A time when playing hide & seek in a cornfield was an all-day event, and a 6-foot snowdrift was a welcome sight to a little boy's eyes. And not only a time, but a place: Sun Prairie (what a great name for a Midwest town!) was the sort of place where the arrival of spring was heralded by boys and girls getting their marbles out of storage and having intense playground marble competitions; a place of spelling bee champs (the 1974 state champ came from Bird School), annual corn festivals, free milk & peanut butter sandwiches in the lunch room, and fresh air and good people. It was sort of geeky, and completely "small town" . . . but nice. When I look back on it, Sun Prairie was the last chance I had to really be a kid, before moving again and facing the onset of junior high and all of the pressures involved. "The Hodgepodge Book" totally reflected that playful, comfortable, small-town spirit, and that's why I love it (and still read it) today. It took me literally years to find a copy, but it was worth the time and effort, and now it is one of my most prized possessions.

              Book Description

From the kinds of trees standing at Great Dixter to the 20 deadliest flowers to the best small garden animals according to the Indiana Department of Agriculture — gardening presents a trove of information to sift through. Where does botany start but with the naming and grouping of all flora? List-making is in the gardener’s blood, and this collection of random facts, data, and wisdom will excite the Latin-spouting garden geek as much as the arrival of the new Heronswood catalog. Inspired by Schott's Original Miscellany, the book contains entries practical (the 15 ornamental plants that deer won't eat) and impractical (the flower on the grave of famed gardener Gertrude Jekyll). Hortus Miscellaneous includes thematic planting lists (blue flowers, night-blooming, shade ground covers); historic gardens (from Babylon to Central Park); size matters (biggest trees, longest root, heaviest cabbage); topiary; state flowers; maze patterns; mulch formulas; and much more.

This really is a "hodge-podge" in the worst sense...messy, poor organization and often pointless information. The cover of the book is it's one strong point. It was one of those books that I wanted to like. Might make an ok gift to a beginner gardener.

3 out of 5 stars A dull presentation of a hodgepodge of information.......2007-07-27

Hodgepodge of information. The material is interesting but presented in a somewhat haphazard way. Was disappointed in the lack of graphics and in the lack of any color images.

I found out that the book that most of us recall from our youth is actually called: "The Hodgepodge Book - an almanac of American folklore" and was written by Duncan Emrich. It was published by Four Winds Press and copywrited in 1972. Good luck in your searches.

Evidently this book isn't my favorite childhood reading. However, I still remember why fire engines are red (there are 12 inches in a ruler. Queen Elizabeth is a ruler. Queen Elizabeth is a ship on the ocen. Little fishes swim in the ocean. Little fishes have fins. The Finns fought the Russians. The Russians are called Reds. Fire engines are always rushin')

I too recall a wonderful hodgepodge book from my childhood filled with rhymes and folklore, but the this is NOT the same book! Mr. Bryan has written a book of hodgepodge for adults. It was published in 1986 and contains many wry observations from boring adults for boring adults. Half of which are not attributed to anyone in particular and leaves this reader wondering how much was invented by Mr. Bryan.

                          5 out of 5 stars A timeless classic! One of a kind.......1999-05-21

Out of all of the books that we were supposed to read during my elementary school years (Stuart Little, Charlotte's Web ect.), this was the only one that I wanted to read. I must have checked this book out of the school library ten times and brought it back late every time! My favorite quote was "He ran from the Indies to the Andes, in his undies!". I often try to remember some of the limericks, knock-knock jokes, what freckles meant and what it means when you see three swallows flying..... A must-read for a child.

5 out of 5 stars Gotta love it!.......1999-01-29

I remember this being my favorite book throughout elementary school. The love poems and limmericks were the best. "A boy with eyes of brown will kiss you once and turn you down, a boy with eyes of blue will kiss you once and ask for two". Ahh..memories!

                              Book Description

Hollywood culture has been dismissed as insignificant for so long that film buffs and critics might be forgiven for forgetting that for two decades an unprecedented interaction of social and cultural forces shaped American film. In this probing account of how a generation of industry newcomers attempted to use the modernist art of the cinema to educate the public in anti-Fascist ideals, Saverio Giovacchini traces the profound transformation that took place in the film industry from the 1930s to the 1950s. Rejecting the notion that European emigres and New Yorkers sought a retreat from politics or simply gravitated toward easy money, he contends that Hollywood became their mecca precisely because they wanted a deeper engagement in the project of democratic modernism.

Seeing Hollywood as a forcefield, Giovacchini examines the social networks, working relationships, and political activities of artists, intellectuals, and film workers who flocked to Hollywood from Europe and the eastern United States before and during the second world war. He creates a complex and nuanced portrait of this milieu, adding breadth and depth to the conventional view of the era's film industry as little more than an empire for Jewish moguls or the major studios. In his rendering Hollywood's newcomers joined with its established elite to develop a modernist aesthetic for film that would bridge popular and avant-garde sensibilities; for them, realism was the most effective vehicle for conveying their message and involving a mass audience in the democratic struggle for progress.

                                Book Description

Despite the economic hardship of the thirties, people flocked to the movies in unprecedented numbers. At the same time, the Roosevelt Administration was trying to implement the New Deal and increase the influence and power of the federal government. Weaving together film and political history, Giuliana Muscio traces the connections between Depression Era Hollywood and the popularity of FDR, asserting that politics transformed its public into spectators while the movie industry transformed its spectators into a public. Hollywood's New Deal reveals the ways in which this reciprocal relationship between politics and film evolved into a strategic effort to stabilize a nation in the clutches of economic unrest by creating a unified American consciousness through national cinema.

Muscio analyzes such regulatory practices as the Hays Code, and the government's scrutinizing of monopolistic practices such as block booking and major studio ownership of movie theaters. Hollywood's New Deal, focusing on the management and structure of the film industry, delves deep into the Paramount case, detailing the behind-the-scenes negotiations and the public statements that ended with film industry leaders agreeing to self regulate and to eliminate monopolistic practices.

Hollywood's acquiescence and the government's retreat from antitrust action show that they had found a mutually beneficial way of preserving their own spheres of power and influence. This book is indispensable for understanding the growth of the film industry and the increasing political importance of mass media.

                                                  Book Description

Foundations of Object-Oriented Programming Using .NET 2.0 Patterns solves the object-oriented and pattern-programming problem by mixing the two--the book teaches object-oriented concepts using patterns, or a solutions-based approach. The book's material is organized around tasks and patterns, and illustrated through development problems and solutions that include persistence, code efficiency, and good design.

This book is of special interest to those who want to learn how to use .NET 2.0 Generics in conjunction with patterns. This unique book is based on the author's lectures, and the information unfolds in a practical manner.

1 out of 5 stars Source code organization is a joke.......2007-01-21

I consider myself an intermediate. None of the concepts I've read in this book so far are foreign but I'm sick and tired of books like this being thrown together. I haven't gotten through the book yet but I will not give this or any other book a better rating until there is at least documentation of how to source is thrown together. Having said that, could I sit here and figure everything out. Sure I could but that's not the point. I bought the book to learn and get a different perspective. For me, looking and stepping through examples is how I learn. The author admits the source is horribly organized. What just baffles me is here's the text in the changelog.txt:

"Initial release where source code is functional, but not organized. To get
an understanding of what the source code is doing look at the book:
Foundations of Object Oriented Programming using .NET 2.0 Patterns published
by Apress. In the future I will work on making the source code more
organized. It also depends on the demands of the readers and clients."

With VS 2005 there simply is no excuse for any author not to be able to package a fully functioning solution or solutions to where the user extracts it and it builds. Well there is one excuse and it's laziness.

The txt file above only confirms whoever put this together is lazy. come on it's not organized great but if people complain maybe we'll do better. Pitiful.

Having said that the content of the book could be good but for me I paid the fee for the book to read and learn through examples not figure out somebody elses mess.

For those who can comprehend code without ever wanting or needing to put it in the IDE and step through, look at variable states etc, then this probably won't apply to you.

I for one demand apress or this author at least extend the courtesy to their customers to at least post documentation as to how to set up the code to where it will at least compile without us trying to weave through the authors tangled mess.

3 out of 5 stars This is a "Foundation" book.......2007-01-18

I was hoping for more C# tips then just plain OO methodologies. This is simply a book to teach you object oriented programming, and the code they use in their examples is C#. If you are just learning OO and wanted to do it in C# then this book would be fine.

3 out of 5 stars Code samples are not orgnized at all, need help ???????????.......2006-12-14

This book is good, however its code samples are not orgnized. Many of my classmates do not know how get the code run by chapter.
We hope the book author be helpfull on this issue, at least post some guidence.

I totally disagree with 'E. Makepeace "Ewan"'. But there's always at least one hater in the group, who hates just to hate.

I've been searching for a book like this for a long time; one that is C# flavor that not only defines patterns, but explains how and why to use them. My schooling focused on OOP concepts but never touched on patterns. The author supplies many good examples and explains concepts in an easy to understand manner. Highly recommended...

3 out of 5 stars Insightful, useful content - very difficult to follow, use examples.......2006-07-17

I am just about thru with ch03. Some very good stuff on Interfaces, generics, factory and bridge patterns. The code examples in the book and those available from Apress hinder rather than help me to understand the very good knowledge the author tries to convey. For me I need to approach this book with emphasis on being very diligent on absorbing detail. At times I need to re-read a chapter to completely understand what he is saying. I think some of that is due to the nature of the information but a bit from my point of view it lacks some necessary editing for continuity. But for me its worth the effort although I don't like to have to work so hard getting the examples to work. I have not been able to compile cleanly any of the code from Apress. Frankly, when I learning new technology I don't want to spend more time trying to figure out how the examples compile than I spend reading the book. Overall it has been worth my effort.
