Augustine's Travels, by Lockheed Martin Corporation chairman Norman Augustine, offers a well-articulated discussion of the various business and life issues that concern this real-life rocket scientist. Among them: why it pays to put ethics above the bottom line; which traits are present in true leaders; what is actually required to stay competitive today; and how mergers and acquisitions really impact corporations. Interspersed among his observations are a series of perceptive comments about life in Cuba, Russia, Hong Kong, Vietnam, and India formed during a whirlwind 1995 tour that Augustine undertook with a group of top CEOs.

Book Description

When the top-ranking executive of one of the world's largest corporations takes a trip -- both the introspective and the transcontinental kinds -- you can bet that people want to tag along.

And they can. Because Norman Augustine, Chairman and CEO of Lockheed Martin Corporation, is sharing his adventures -- the mind-boggling challenges, heady successes, mistakes made and remedied -- in his new book, Augustine's Travels.

Following the success of his first book, Augustine's Laws, the Travels takes a more wide-ranging and in-depth approach to the author's experiences. The book is a wisdom-packed and wit-infused compilation of observations on an array of important business and social issues, including:

*Ethics: Dispelling the popular notion that CEOs are just a pack of scoundrels, Augustine recounts his experience with executives who have put ethics first -- making it the backbone of their endeavors and behaviors.

*Leaders: As an engineer turned manager turned executive, Augustine learned the art of leadership by watching and doing. He pinpoints and explains what makes successful leaders tick: inspired management, motivation, courage, integrity.

*Competitiveness: With the U.S. at a global crossroads, the author focuses on six key areas where we lag behind, as well as what it will take to close the gap... and leap ahead.

*Mergers & Acquisitions: Having witnessed both hostile, chaotic takeovers and relatively smooth, successful mergers, Augustine turns a trained eye to these gargantuan business deals -- and explains what really happens.

*Education: The author outlines a model that he spearheaded in Maryland for business to help improve public schools, and he examines ways to replicate its success across the country.

Augustine's Travels also explores such challenging issues as crisis management, reengineering, the changing role of the CEO, and "providing value."

This fascinating book is a call to action, as well as an engrossing and entertaining read. As Augustine says in the Preface: "I want this book to help the reader deal with issues, make decisions, and solve problems.... The time to come to terms with the issues raised here is right now. Not later, now. Because anyone who wants to be a business -- and a personal -- success in the 21st century had better take full advantage of what little is left of the 20th."

With its sage advice and probing insights, Augustine's Travels is one adventure that's not to be missed.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A pleasant if somewhat biased view of Defense Contractors.......1999-05-26

Augustine comes across as the type of person you would love to have as a dinner companion. He has wonderful stories and a very rich life experience to draw upon. The book is an easy ready and most people will get something from it. I was left wanting more depth in the deatils of the merger initiations. I also have enough experience with Lockheed Martin to know that Augustine views his company the same way that every parent believes their child is the star of their Little League team.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Model of How a Leader Should Act.......1999-01-23

Norman Augustine is one of the most talented and thoughtful leaders in American business. This is a rare look at the personal philosophy that has allowed him to beat the odds, time and again. While head of Lockheed-Martin, Mr. Augustine pulled off the most successful series of acquisitions accomplished in recent memory. You will never find a better book on ethical standards in business. Mr. Augustine is a model we can all appreciate. Follow Mr. Augustine's advice, and you will be a great success, too. Be sure to read his other book, Augustine's Laws. It's full of important insights about how people really behave.

3 out of 5 stars Part Unforgettable, Part Disappointing.......1998-07-30

While preaching the imortance of sticking to "core competencies" in any enterprise, Mr. Augustine writes on a wide range of topics, some wonderful ... others not so wonderful. His insights about ethical conduct are unforgettable. He fails to deliver in the section on mergers, though. The author promises fresh insights on how the deal is really done, but the only thing in that chapter not available from newspaper accounts is his war stories of trying to maintain secrecy. All in all, a quick, easy, enjoyable read.

5 out of 5 stars The best little book on personal finance........2006-02-14

First, read the other reviews for this book because they are right on target! This is a great little book that gets right to the point...how to make your money work for you. It is a simple, yet effective plan for reaching your goals and managing your money. If you want a book on investing and frugal shopping, this is not the book. This book is all about planning and making that plan work. I strongly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars How I bought the farm.......2002-02-21

With little money to deal with, I couldn't believe that this book could do anything for me. Finally after a year of letting it collect dust, my husband and I tried it out. We set goals for 1,3,5 and 10 years separately and then together. In less than three years we purchased the 5 acre farm with farmhouse just by following the instructions in this little bitty book. I recommend it very highly to anyone who is in debt and wants out and to anyone who just wants to get more out of the money they make. Like I said, you don't have to have much money -- this books tells you step by step how to use it better.

5 out of 5 stars You can make your paycheck last!.......2002-02-07

This is a great book. I lent my copy to someone and now must replace it. I recommend this book to any and everyone who wants to top living paycheck to paycheck. Why? Because it is simple and easy to follow. And best of all, painless!

5 out of 5 stars This Is A Great Money Management System!.......2001-07-31

I read finance books as a hobby. Of all the books I've read on budgeting and personal finance, this is the best. I use this system today and have for several years. It does not teach how to invest. It does not focus on getting out of debt and staying out of debt, though you will be able to do that if you follow the system. It shows how to set up a simple but effective budgeting system. My recommendation: read it!

5 out of 5 stars This book is very important to help you figure out your $........1999-06-07

By the end of just the second chapter (if you follow the directions and do what it says) you will be so pumped about this book.

You will feel like you finally got your life into gear and can actually SAVE MONEY to buy things in the future and save for emergencies when you never have been able to before!

    This book is awesome!

            Book Description

As traditional commercial fishing becomes increasingly expensive and restrictive, aquacultural fish production emerges as a practical viable alternative. The Aquaculture Sourcebook is an introductory text and ready reference for information on the fresh-, brackish-, and salt-water farming of both fish and shellfish, as well as of several important algae. Until now, such material has been available only in scattered publications; but the Aquaculture Sourcebook incorporates all the feasibility data pertinent to farming aquacultural species in North America into one easy-to-use text. It will be welcomed not only by current and future aquaculturists, but also by fisheries, seafood company managers, biologists, teachers, and students. The Aquaculture Sourcebook has been designed to satisfy the needs of fisheries, scientists, and commercial aquaculturists by providing, in a handy and well-organized format, information vital for successful North American aquacultural ventures. Concise details are given for over a hundred individual speices, including not only those raised for human consumption, but also organisms reared for feed, bait, or other purposes. Each entry in this valuable volume covers such relevant material as: *the scientific and common names of the organism *its visual appearance and distinctive characteristics *habitat range specifications *species reproduction and development *age- and growth-related factors *specific parasites an diseases *potential predators and/or competitive species *its prospects for future aquacultural success Key groups of closely related species are discussed in a geographical context, highlighting areas which each will find the habitat best for its survival. Great care has been taken to specify ranges of tolerable salinity and optimum temperature for candidate species, and emphasis has been placed on creating aquacultural environments that replicate those normally habitated in nature. Comprehensive, informative, and accessible to layperson and scientist alike, the Aqualculture Sourcebook is both the perfect desktop reference for anyone establishing an aquacultural facility, and a ready reference to help maintain one.

                Book Description

Developments in three-dimensional cloud radiation over the past few decades are assessed and distilled into this contributed volume. Chapters are authored by subject-matter experts who address a broad audience of graduate students, researchers, and anyone interested in cloud-radiation processes in the solar and infrared spectral regions. After two introductory chapters and a section on the fundamental physics and computational techniques, the volume extensively treats two main application areas: the impact of clouds on the Earth's radiation budget, which is an essential aspect of climate modeling; and remote observation of clouds, especially with the advanced sensors on current and future satellite missions.

Having said that, this gives sidelights present nowhere else, and a fine treatment of some by-passed cosmological models.

This classic book should be on the shelf of every physicist interested in relativity. The exposition is very clear and can be used to fix some ideas. My comments do not include the thermodynamics part, which I'm not competent to review. The cosmological applications are, evidently, severaly outdated, but can be very useful for those interested in the history of the development of observational cosmology.

                Book Description

For this third edition H. D. Zeh has thoroughly revised his book to include important new results. At the same time it retains the features that make it a classic text on irreversibility, and one which clearly distinguishes the latter from time asymmetry. New findings are presented particularly in the chapters on the arrow of time in quantum mechanics and quantum cosmology. Concepts such as decoherence and timelessness are discussed. The book has gained a reputation for its thorough survey of what is known about irreversibility in physics. It investigates physical phenomena in classical, quantum and cosmological settings. Both physicists and philosophers of science who reviewed earlier editions considered this book a magnificent survey, a concise, technically sophisticated, up-to-date discussion of the subject, showing fine sensitivity to some of the crucial philosophical subtleties.

Make no mistake, this is a great book!

It thoroughly discusses the six arrows of time and their law like vs. fact like nature. It discusses pretty much every other serious work that's been done respecting time and its physical descriptions (including those of Hu Price and Julian Barbour as well as the more conventional accounts by Stephen Hawking).

And also, it has some fascinating speculations on how the universal expansion itself might be the master arrow of time.

However, it IS an expensive book and since Zeh will be having his Fifth Edition out in June 2007, you might want to wait until it's out to purchase his thoughts on this significant and important area of research.

That said, whether you choose to purchase the June 2007 version or this one, you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars THE place to look for the physics behind the arrow of time.......1999-12-11

A lot has been written about the arrow of time, a large amount of which leaves out the details (such as Huw Price's recent book). For those details, this is THE place to look. Those discussing the arrow of time, whether they agree or disagree with his conclusions, generally start with what has been written down here.

In this slim volume, Zeh gives a wonderfully concise and broad coverage to all physical aspects of the arrow of time. Furthermore, while his approach is rigorous, he makes a point of drawing out what the mathematical conclusions mean, and he does so quite lucidly. As a bonus he has a wonderful section on the quanticization of time. The only problem with this book is the rather high price tag, which will probably stop most of the casual readers interested in the topic from picking up a copy.

                                  Book Description

Alone among important American writers, Ambrose Bierce fought for four years in the Civil War. The writings he produced about that conflict comprise a body of work unique in our nation's literature. This volume gathers for the first time virtually everything Bierce wrote about the war, from letters composed on the field of battle to maps he drew as a topographical engineer, from his masterful short stories to his final bittersweet ruminations before he disappeared into Mexico in 1914. The collection is organized chronologically, following Bierce's participation in a wide range of battles, from the early skirmishes in the West Virginia mountains to the bloodbaths at Shiloh and Chickamauga and his near fatal wounding at Kennesaw Mountain. His overlapping accounts of these events provide a clear and compelling record of the sights and sounds of the battlefield, the psycho-logical traumas the war induced in its soldiers, and the memories that would haunt survivors for the rest of their lives. In prose that anticipates the work of Ernest Hemingway and Tim O'Brien, Bierce's writings unflinchingly tell the truth about the war. Writing in the 1880s and 1890s, at a time when both the North and South were erecting monuments to the heroes and glories of the war, Bierce insisted that his readers confront what really happened. Rather than celebrate causes and comrades, Bierce's fiction and memoirs describe the impossibly brutal realities of the Civil War battlefield. The volume includes a biographical introduction and comprehensive notes on all the writings and is suitable for classroom adoption and general readers alike.
