Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A good coverage of the basics of career counselling, but..........2004-06-22

I must admit to a touch of cynicism when I first started reading this book. Published in 1987, I was unsure how applicable the book's ideas would be to the present. Also, the preface states that one of the book's targeted audiences is "[c]linical psychologists, social workers, and others with no specific training to career counselling" (p. xii), and I was a little sceptical that such professionals could confidently add career counselling to their repertoire of services by simply reading this book. While I believe further reading and training would definitely be required for people wanting to become career practitioners, this book nonetheless provides an excellent and readable overview of career counselling techniques and issues that are still relevant to today's job market.

The book starts by outlining existing theories of career development, including those of Ginzberg, Super, Roe, Holland and Krumboltz. The overview is deliberately brief (and now dated), so readers seeking a more comprehensive literature review should look elsewhere, but it serves its purpose in acquainting readers with the theoretical basics and having them move on to the practicalities of career counselling. The book then continues to describe its recommended process for career counselling, from client assessment to searching and applying for jobs. Each topic is discussed within its own chapter.

The first chapters cover setting objectives for counselling, the need to define clear expectations for the counselling, and client assessment. This section of the book advocates the use work-related preference interviews for determining what kind of work would be most suitable for clients, but urges counsellors to consider other factors as well. A valuable theme that is established in these chapters is that career decision-making does not occur in isolation, and that career counsellors should consider as much information as possible about the client's background, interests, needs, abilities, and psychological issues (such as low self-esteem) that may impact on the counselling process.

Subsequent chapters describe steps for generating and selecting career alternatives. Practical advice is given about how to help the client organise occupations into groupings, generate possible choices, and refine these. One very positive message that emerged from this part of the book was the idea that clients should become active participants in this process. The book encourages counsellors to teach clients information gathering skills, and to give them the responsibility of researching each option. It provides some suggestions for methods of weighing up choices (such as pros and cons exercises), but emphasises that the client should ultimately be the one to make the decision.

The latter chapters of the book discuss devising plans for achieving career objectives, searching for jobs, and interview taking. Although some solid advice is offered, one objection I had was the book's framing of client indecisiveness as being automatically negative, as indecision and leaving options open may be a rational strategy in an unstable and continually changing labour market. And in the section on planning, although "flexible" plans are described, the examples tended to fixate on only few outcomes in the distant future. I feel this is problematic, given the many influences on career decision-making and the large number of happenings that could occur within a long period that could change the course of a person's career. What seemed to be missing was advice to clients to maximise their opportunities by trying for multiple options, building their skills portfolio, and learning strategies for adapting to uncertainty and unforseen circumstances.

Overall, this book offers a solid grounding in basics of career counselling. Although its content would need to be supplemented with further knowledge in some areas (e.g. information about cognitive behavioural therapy, résumé-writing, and interview techniques), the book would make an excellent resource for career counsellors, and would likely be of interest to other social professionals considering doing this type of work.

4 out of 5 stars a must-have for any career counselor.......2000-11-03

It is informative, innovative, easy to read, and very relevant. I would highly recommend this book as a resource for high school special education teachers and principals as well as a text for undergraduate and graduate course work.

Since it's publication over 30 years ago, this massive 3-volume work (the result of many years of research and data gathered from throughout the World) is absolutely STILL the best and most complete reference on SCIENCE FICTION, FANTASY and HORROR films (from the Silent Era - up to 1974) ever produced by anyone! A truly remarkable Landmark in cinema publishing that will likely be referred to and cited by film historians, critics and movie fans for many years to come (including the in-progress future 2nd edition!). - Paul Merrill / Los Angeles, 2003

An extremely revealing guide to an essential "great myth" of America, one that drives much of our politics and even religion, no less than film and novel plots. Not necessarily a healthy myth, but rather one more and more irrelevant to a culture that no longer lives on a "frontier" but in an enormously interactive megaculture whose borders are no more substantial than electronic. Hundreds of examples make the arguments unavoidable.

Consumers will discover the best components, how to be a savvy shopper, how to avoid buying the wrong technology, and how to set up and fine-tune a system. These technologies include DVD players, audio/video receivers, multichannel speaker systems, high-definition television (HDTV), and digital satellite systems.

I have been keeping up with AV via periodicals and product pamphlets. This was to me not a lot of new information but for folks who are just starting out, this would be a GREAT place to begin. Not too tech-y, tech-y enough when it needs to be. A decent overall offering that does what it says.

2 out of 5 stars NOT for Everyone.......2005-09-16

I purchased this book as a requirement for a new job. I recently left the practice of law and went to work for a company that designs, sells and installs home theaters. Having graduated from law school, one would think I could understand just about everything. Wrong. This book touts itself as one that is for the masses - the everyday schmo who is looking to do this themselves. While extraordinarily well written, it is NOT for everyone. It is overly complex and technical for the everyday guy and is more apropos for electrical engineers or experts in the field. finally, the issue I received was supposed to be a recent edition and, if it was, it's already painfully out of date and needs revamped.

3 out of 5 stars Some good stuff here - Some is total nonsense!.......2004-08-28

Robert Harley is a "high-end audiophile" and you need to keep that in mind when reading thru any of his books. In "Home Theater For Everyone", he provides a lot of useful information. But he also supplies a lot of "hokum" as well. That is, there is much in this books that he states as fact when infact it is nothing more than his own (often erroneous) opinion.

If you are already well-versed in audio/video equipment, you'll know when Mr. Harley goes "off-the-wall" with his crazy statements and conclusions. But if you're new to the world of audio/video, I say "buyer beware". If you follow all of Mr. Harley's advice, you will end up spending thousands of dollars on overpriced equipment and unnecessary frills.

Buy the book for the great general information Mr. Harley provides. But be wary of some of his conclusions and advice. One area where I strongly agree with Mr. Harley is when he advocates to do your own shopping and make your own judgements.

3 out of 5 stars A mixed bag of good information and tommyrot.......2004-06-09

Much of the information in this book is good, but a couple of issues need to be addressed. Tomlinson Holman, a good engineer, is the man behind both the THX professional cinema house certification and the Home THX certification program for home theater components. I have a substantial issue with, particularly, the latter because it consists of a secret set of parameters, which are divulged only to licensees under nondisclosure. Because the requirements are themselves secret, how can anyone judge their validity, or the comparative value of the certification?

Mr. Harley, on the other hand, is no engineer at all, nor even a hands-on amateur, but a promoter. He combines occasionally astute observations with technical nonsense, so that even when his conclusions appear to make sense you have no idea how he got there. Simply put, he often either doesn't know what he's talking about, or he does and is simply writing what equipment vendors and the gullible want said.

This author obviously knows what he's talking about, but the book is dated and too detailed on some topics and not enough detailed on other topics to really provide a good broad brush of the topic. There's lots on audio, but not enough on much of what is going on today, like Windows XP Media Center Edition and PVRs and DirecWAY and other things. This is a consumer electronics focus in an increasingly broader industry. I've put a lot more into my home theater than he's talked about. I'm buying Home Theater for Dummies to see what they say -- their outline is broader and their edition is just out.
