Book Description
The topic of careers has become both increasingly important and increasingly complex. Contemporary economies have bought about changes in the nature of careers, and uncertainty in the structure and longevity of firms and their ability to offer long-term employment. Corporate policy-makers struggle with alternatives to traditional employment structures, while individuals struggle to decide whether and how they ought to become more independent of such structures, pursuing what some have called 'post-corporate' or 'boundaryless' careers. This volume is an integrated survey of some of the best current thinking and research on careers. Presented as a series of chapters by an international group of experts and knit together through themes and dialogues, it advances our understanding of the deeper meaning of changes in careers, and of the interrelationships and longer-term consequences of those changes.

Book Description
The Investor's Guide to Active Asset Allocation offers you the background and analytical tools required to take full advantage of the opportunities found in asset allocation, sector rotation, ETFs, and the business cycle.
Written by renowned technical analyst and best-selling author Martin Pring, the book presents Mr. Pring's unique Six Business Cycle Stages, explaining why certain asset categories perform better or worse during different phases of the business cycle, and demonstrating how to use intermarket tools and technical analysis to recognize what business cycle stage the market is in.
Pring shows you how to apply active asset allocation, rotating among sectors and major markets (stocks, bonds, and futures) as the business cycle stage changes, to develop optimum allocation strategies. He focuses on exchange traded funds (ETFs) as the best vehicle for asset allocation rotation, since they are easily traded and have much more flexibility than mutual funds. He also offers specific guidelines for what sectors to be in, depending on the business cycle stage.
The Investor's Guide to Active Asset Allocation provides you with proven investing expertise on:
Basic Principles of Money Management
How the Business Cycle Drives the Prices of Bonds, Stocks, and Commodities
The Pring Six Business Cycle Stages
Technical Tools that Help to Identify Trend Reversals
Putting Things into a Long-Term Perspective
Recognizing Stages Using Easy-to-Follow Indicators as well as Models
How the Ten Market Sectors Fit into the Rotation Process
How Individual Sectors and Groups Performed in Each of the Six Stages
Asset Allocation for Specific Stages
This dynamic investing resource features a CD-ROM, which contains supplementary information that will help you execute the strategies described in the book. You'll find live links to useful web sites that contain a wide-ranging library of ETFs, database sources, historical data files in Excel format, and a collection of historical multi-colored PowerPoint charts.
An essential tool for improving your analytical skills, The Investor's Guide to Active Asset Allocation shows you how to move from a passive to an active allocation model and explains the link between business cycle and stock market cycle for more effective - and profitable - trading and investing.
Customer Reviews:
An interesting Subject.......2007-04-07
This book covers the subject of how to invest regarding business cycles. This is an interesting subject and this is a well organized book, yet not well written/composed, that is, it is hard to comprehend the matter because of the way it is written with too many unnecessary details. There is another book of this kind, John Murphy's "Intermarket Analysis". But this time, although the Murphy's book is well written/composed, it is not well organized that much of the Pring's book. In fact, Pring's book is a derivation from his book "Technical Analysis Explained". Perhaps reading Pring's book on technical analysis together with Murphy's book could be better to comprehend the subject.
Business Cycle Approach to ETF Asset Allocation.......2006-08-30
Asset allocation is one of the most critical aspects of investing. Unfortunately, too many investors do not pay as much attention to asset allocation as they should, typically resulting in inferior investment performance. After reading Pring's book, investors will have a clear-cut methodology on which factors are important to a well-adjusted portfolio, as well as how to use ETFs to build the portfolio.
Based upon the author's extensive knowledge of technical analysis, his numerous educational seminars, his newsletter, and previous books, Pring provides investors with a detailed step-by-step guide to asset allocation. In addition, the book comes with a very useful CD-ROM and workbook reference to provide additional insights and further clarification of his key points.
After reviewing the basics of diversification and wonders of compounding, Pring focuses on the typical business cycle covering the rate of change, chronological sequence of events, and using indicators to determine the sequence. In a later chapter he depicts the six business cycle stages and how to recognize each one using specific indicators. He also covers trend lines, moving averages, overbought/oversold, relative strength (not RSI), divergences, and his unique KST indicators.
Pring explains long-term cycles and ways to determine the direction of the secular trend, and then how the business cycle drives prices of stocks, bonds and commodities. He illustrates how the ten market sectors move in a rotational process through the six stages.
Pring believes that ETFs are a good way to diversify a portfolio and provides and introductory chapter on ETF families and their make-up. He shows how to use ETFs in a sector rotation approach.
In summary, Pring provides investors and traders with a well thought out methodology combining the business cycle changes, sector rotation, and ETF portfolio. This 370-page book and accompanying CD-ROM require many hours of study to get the most from it, but the impact on an investor's portfolio performance can be substantial.

Book Description
This book, the first to be devoted to the story of Troilus and Cressida as it develops through the ages and in various literatures, is the joint effort of an international team of scholars. It studies a myth which represents an important aspect of the European imagination: the way in which the problems of love and death are faced in narrative, poetry, drama, and opera. From the Greeks, Etruscans, and Romans the story passes into the hands of artists such as Benoit de Sainte Maure, Boccaccio, Chaucer, Henryson, Shakespeare, and Dryden, and is finally resurrected in the twentieth century in America, England, and Germany. This book analyses the changes - both literary and more broadly imaginative - that minor and major writers have introduced, and thus constitutes the product of a truly intertextual and comparative approach. While devoting attention to all these authors and their works, the volume concentrates on the treatment of the theme in Chaucer and Shakespeare and is therefore aimed at students of English and Comparative Literature as well as those general readers who are interested in the history of European culture. Customer Reviews:
Something every technical profeesional should have.......2003-12-05
An incredibly easy book to read. I found I could go from section to section and extract the knowledge that needed at that time. Sometimes I just pick it up and open it at random and I often get something new out of it. After being exposed to this book you can see how dimensional analysis is something that most of us should be capable of applying to those problems that lend themselves to no other approach. The only reason I gave it 4 and not 5 was because I would have liked to see more financial examples and I don't think amperes should be considered a fundamental unit. One of the best technical books I have bought.

Book Description
Written for students of introductory physics, this best-selling text offers students an upbeat, non-threatening overview of the discipline which focuses on concepts and critical thinking rather than number-crunching. It presents physics in a language students can comprehend, using analogies and mental imagery based on real world situations. Mathematical equations, formulas, and calculations appear as a footnote on the page to reference and supplement chapter concepts and help students see the connection between math and science.
Customer Reviews:
Not conceptual.......2007-09-04
My daughter used this textbook in her HS physics class and I was apalled with how much useless information it contained. Little to no historical information about who, what and when it was discovered and how it brought about changed. Her teacher used the chapter on the conservation of energy to talk about energy conservation, an entirely different subject. I agree with teaching the concepts of physics in HS before diving into the math in college, but there are much better texts available!
Not what they stated.......2007-05-19
Well, they made it seem like this is the paperback version of the hardcover. It is NOT.
This is an EXERCISE BOOK and no such description exists.
Be careful when purchasing. The only version of the book itself is the hardback version costing over a hundred bucks.
Incredible textbook.......2007-02-04
Going into intro physics this semester, my boyfriend (who had aced his physics course no problem) was utterly ready to hold my hand through the ordeal. But a good instructor and this very comprehensible text makes everything quite easy to understand. Highly recommended to anyone wanting a firm grasp of physics.
Very useful book for those who would like to learn physics without equations.......2006-12-30
I used Conceptual Physics by Paul G. Hewitt along with a more technical university-level introductory physics book that had a lot of equations but not much conceptual explanation. I should admit that I was not very fond of physics until I started to read this book. It explained physical concepts in a simple language that was easy to understand. Although it did not cover some of the more complicated physical concept, it did cover enough material so that I could understand most of the physics equations in my other more technical physics book much better. Conceptual Physics was even exciting to read and I usually looked forward to doing so. After finishing this book, because I understood physical concepts much better, I started to read other popular physics books. Conceptual Physics is not intended to be used in a course that requires solving physics problems based on understanding equation. So it should not be used as such unless it is accompanied by another book containing equations. But if you would like to learn conceptual physics without equation, it has a tremendous value.
This book helped me learn to hate physics.......2006-12-11
As a college student forced to endure this book for an entire semester of conceptual physics, I can say with utmost certainty that this book should not be be on any teacher's list of useful text books. I chose physics to fulfill my university math requirement in order to broaden my very basic scientific knowledge, as I had never taken a physics course. However, what I found in this book (which constituted the bulk of my instruction) was a conglomeration of random examples with little cohesion, annoying illustrations that were distracting rather than helpful, badly organized chapters that left me wandering through the pages wondering what had happened, and an index that doesn't include standard items such as "static friction" or "watt". Perhaps most frustrating was the appalling lack of mathematical equations that the student is somehow supposed to magically know by the end of the chapter, when they are necessary to solve the problems. Please, if you are a physics instructor, spare your students the agony of trying to grasp an understanding of your subject through this book.

Book Description
Four novels by America's most influential man of letters at the turn of the century, which explore the conflicts of private life and social institutions with unflinching realismn. Contains "A Foregone Conclusion" and "Indian Summer," dramas of complex romantic entanglements set in Italy, "A Modern Instance," the first full-scale study of infidelity and divorce in American fiction, and "The Rise of Silas Lapham," a brilliantly skeptical portrait of American business and new money.
Customer Reviews:
Great introduction to Howells.......2007-07-12
William Dean Howells is one of those writers who everyone respects and recognizes as an important figure in American literature yet very few people read. This collection offers an excellent introduction. Four of Howells's greatest works are here. "A Foregone Conclusion" and "Indian Summer" are charming romances based in Italy. With the possible exception of James, there is no other male writer from the Gilded Age who captures American women better than Howells as the female leads from both novels show. Howells also offers some interesting social commentary on both Italy and America. Howells had a political background (he wrote offical biographies of both Lincoln and R.B.Hayes) and this is reflected in both novels. Both stories could be conventional romances; but with a skillful author like Howells, these tales are lifted to excellent studies of character, place, society and his times. "A Modern Instance" and "The Rise of Silas Lapham" are much more realistic and are set in the United States. They are also darker. Howell examines the newly rich, journalism, industry and the changes in the Republic during his life. He also continues to portray excellent characters. While these four novels are only a fraction of what Howells wrote (the man wrote over 100 books, including over 35 novels), they provide an excellent starting point. These books have quick plots, lovely images, memorable characters and offer insight into the human heart and into a distant past. The Library of America can be commended for its solid job in assembling this book. Both scholars and general readers will enjoy this collection.
realistic window into another literary age.......2001-08-05
My friend Paul caught me reading this book and said "Wow, I'd have to believe that I was nearly immortal in order to read Howells." For the early 1880s, though, this is a pretty readable book. The ideas are familiar: "Money is to the fore now. It is the romance, the poetry of our age. It's the thing that chiefly strikes the imagination. The Englishmen who come here are more curious about the great new millionaires than about any one else, and they respect them more." (Rise of Silas Lapham)
My favorite section from The Rise of Silas Lapham: "This comes of the error which I have often deprecated," said the elder Corey. "In fact I am always saying that the Bostonian ought never to leave Boston. Then he knows--and then only--that there can be no standard but ours. But we are constantly going away, and coming back with our convictions shaken to their foundations. One man goes to England, and returns with the conception of a grander social life; another comes home from Germany with the ntion of a more searching intellectual activity; a fellow just back from Paris has the absurdest ideas of art and literature; and you revert to us from the cowboys of Texas, and tell us to our faces that we ought to try Papa Lapham by a jury of his peers. It ought to be stopped--it ought, really. The Bostonian who leaves Boston ought to be condemned to perpetual exile."
If these novels lack the genius of Edith Wharton or Henry James they provide a much more realistic view of American life circa 1880. You might not learn as much about the interior of the human heart but you'll learn something about how people got from place to place, furnished their houses, and managed businesses.
The Minister's Charge.......2000-02-21
The Minister's Charge cannot be rated, in my estimation, as one of Howells better works. Although the relationship between the minister and his charge is intriging, the superferlous details of the young characters social life drags on and on in its useless verbosity. I enjoy Howells, and appreciate most of his works, but I labored through this book but ultimately had to leave the last 30 pages unread.
