Excellent book.......2004-03-06
I think it is a great book. DSP education has suffered by not having this level of material presented and understood before diving into the blizzard of equations that characterises most peoples first exposure to DSP education. Also, its goal of reaching high school students is filling the need of providing a basic literacy in the digital nature of daily life that is sorely needed.
The presentation is clear. It uses aspects of technology that touch peoples lives, so they aren't remote or unapproachable. I think it is very positive in promoting electronics as an area where females as well as males can be comfortable participating. The topic areas were selected to peak interest, the first step toward learning. And although the book intended to lay basic groundwork, it does it with a clear eye toward paving the way to more advanced investigations, and strikes good compromises about the depth to go into, so that introductions are made to techniques that will be major themes in later study.
It is also an attractive book. It is colorful and inviting.
I disagree with another reviewer that it is has hype for engineering. It is compelling and elicits enthusiasm. How can that be a flaw in a textbook?!
Interesting Approach.......2003-11-08
This book is the outcome of a collaboration called "The Infinity Project" between Southern Methodist University, the government and Texas Instruments. It is intended to be an interesting introduction to current leading-edge digital technologies. For vehicles it uses digital music (a digital band), digital images (acquiring an image, and a robot eye), digital multimedia records (a digital yearbook and a digital backpack, or personal data assistant), digital transmission, and network design. There is a web site at http://www.infinity-project.org/.
The strong point of this collection of projects is its design orientation. It begins with a distinction between scientists (creators of explanation) and engineers (creators of solutions for needs). It presents math and physics just-in-time, as parts of design problems and illustrates (with fair success) a common paradigm for pursuing such problems.
Weak points of the collection are wordiness, some repetition, and a lack of justification or qualification of some general remarks. For example, a "nine-step" design algorithm is proposed with inadequate development or discussion.
Excessive enthusiasm leads to some annoying hype to support engineering. An example of the book's myopia regarding creativity is a discussion of a design problem to "create a digital system that can produce award-winning movies from scratch by simply using a few suggestive keywords typed in by a user". This project sees creativity in the design of the system, but not in creating a movie - all you have to do is "paint by numbers" using a huge inventory of snipets. Other professions also may feel minimized.
Overall, the book provides a nice feel for engineering, and for the use of math in solving engineering problems. It clearly shows the inquiring nature of creativity and the extension of common sense to penetrate complex issues. The ideas of constraints and trade-offs are made clear.
This book appears aimed at precocious high-school students or at first-year engineering courses either for engineers or for those that want a flavor of what engineering is. The authors have not explicitly stated their target audience, but the infinity web site suggests "high school and early college engineering curriculum".

Book Description
He blusters and grumbles. He rants and raves. He tries to outgun the schoolkids chasing after the bus on his route. But in his heart, Ed Crankshaft has a decent streak a mile wide. Patiently explaining death to his grandson Max. Comforting his friend Ralph as Ralph's wife descends into Alzheimer's. Thrusting flowers and candy at his son-in-law on a nearly forgotten wedding anniversary. The star of the hit comic strip Crankshaft is a gentle soul stuck in a cantankerous mood.Since 1987, Ed Crankshaft has entertained millions in this strip, which now appears in more than 300 daily and Sunday newspapers. With a supporting cast that includes Ed's two daughters, Chris and Pam; Pam's husband, Jeff; and their kids, Max and Mindy; Crankshaft appeals to families everywhere who steadfastly deal with intergenerational cares and conflicts. As one critic said: "Crankshaft is a witty, thoughtful commentary on the trials and tribulations of today's senior citizens."But, of course, Crankshaft is so much more. The strip's approach to Alzheimer's generated countless letters and e-mails, as did Crankshaft's near-death illness. Hilarious and clever, honest and moving, Crankshaft both keeps readers laughing at the curmudgeon's pranks and pondering life's real meaning. It's a balancing act that's rarely attempted in the comics-and with Crankshaft, it works admirably.

your favorite crabcakes - the crankshaft collection.......2007-09-20
book was wonderful, i am looking for a crankshaft book detailing ed's visit to the national world war two memorial in washington, d.c.
the only suggestion i have is please put some packing inside. the box had been so horribly smashed that the carrier had labeled the box as having been destroyed. why my book didn't fall out defies logic.

Do you like old men?.......2007-09-05
Crankshaft is the oldest, meanest, bus driver this side of the planet. No, really, they can see the traffic problems he causes from space. He is insulting, he runs over mailboxes and tries to outrun the kids he should be picking up.
But this strip also deals with the issues of family, the generation gap, Alzheimers and the changing world. Sometimes touching, sometimes sad and most of the time very, very funny.
Crab Cakes-A Crankshaft Collection.......2007-06-15
I bought this book as a gift. It is wonderful! Crankshaft is one of our favorite comic strips. We subscribe to two newspapers mainly for the comics.

FUNNY STRIP.......2005-01-08
THe wonderful thing about Ed crankshaft is that almost all of us know someone just like him. Someone who seems to be in a perpetually crabby mood and makes sure everyone around him knows it. But at his core Ed has a heart of gold. Ed's surrounded by his family members including his daughters and their families and it all leads to situations that we all encounter in every day life and these kind of family funny strips like Crankshaft, Drabble, Foxtrot and For Better Or Worse have always been preffered to me over strips involving funny animal types. Crankshaft is a strip that we can all relate to. Funny, witty, cantankerous but filled with warmth.
Very funny and interesting!.......2002-10-23
I recently came across Crankshaft as it's printed in newspapers in California, rather than in my hometown. I absolutely love the comic strip, so I quickly got this. This book is excellent. I was surprised as it was published this year, but the strips in the book were created about ten years ago. The Crankshaft comic strips are similar to Lynn Johnston's For Better or For Worse, as both strips show real-life situations and stories, while the family grows along with us. The Alzheimer story with two people associated with the Crankshaft family is very touching. All in all, it's a great book, and I absolutely loved it.

Book Description
First comes love, then comes marriage unless, of course, you're gay. But when San Francisco's mayor, Gavin Newsom, ordered City Hall to begin issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples on February 12th, thousands of gays and lesbians from around the world lined up to take their vows, inspiring other cities to follow suit. As intense public debate continues, We Do is an intimate portrait of these history-making weddings. A many-splendored thing, love is captured here in all its joy and diversity. Drawing on ceremonies from around the country, here are weddings both traditional and unconventional, whether the brides and grooms are in flowing white gowns, business suits, or blue jeans. The result is a touching album of happy couples, from the two lesbians who've been together 51 years to dads with babes in arms. A joyful celebration, We Do stands witness to the fact that we are all created equal in love.

A celebration of civil rights ..........2004-06-20
One of the most moving photo-essays I have seen in too long to remember. There are images that are moving, that made me laugh, that brought a lump to my throat and a tear to my eye. This book is essential for the coffee table of anyone who believes in civil rights, or for any family members who aren't yet convinced that two people who love each other should be able to get married, and will be my new wedding gift for any couple, gay or straight. What an amazing tribute to the more than 4,000 couples who battled rain, cold, wind, and hateful protestors to show their love to the world--and most importantly to each other--and to make history at the same time.

Momentous events in the World of Greyhawk.......2000-05-02
One of the most shocking Greyhawk adventures of all time - the famous mage Rary, the pride of the Circle of Eight, falls under an accursed corruption, and slays Otiluke and Tenser! He then retreats into the wilds of the Abbor Alz, south of Greyhawk, beyond the Ghost Tower of Inverness. His accomplice? None other than Lord Robilar, the flamboyant villain from Gygax's campaign mentioned in T1-4. The veteran PCs (very high level!) must plunge into the wilds of the Bright Desert, facing desert centaurs, manscorpions, and far worse as they grimly bring Rary (a level 24 arch-mage) to justice. Their reward? Sad answers to tragic questions, and far more revealed that will prepare them for the next epic adventure... a true classic.
Book Description
Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is gaining a lot of attention these days, as more companies and individuals switch from standard telephone service to phone service via the Internet. The reason is simple: A single network to carry voice and data is easier to scale, maintain, and administer. As an added bonus, it's also cheaper, because VoIP is free of the endless government regulations and tariffs imposed upon phone companies.
VoIP is simply overflowing with hack potential, and VoIP Hacks is the practical guide from O'Reilly that presents these possibilities to you. It provides dozens of hands-on projects for building a VoIP network, showing you how to tweak and customize a multitude of exciting things to get the job done. Along the way, you'll also learn which standards and practices work best for your particular environment. Among the quick and clever solutions showcased in the book are those for:
- gauging VoIP readiness on an enterprise network
- using SIP, H.323, and other signaling specifications
- providing low-layer security in a VoIP environment
- employing IP hardphones, analog telephone adapters, and softPBX servers
- dealing with and avoiding the most common VoIP deployment mistakes
In reality, VoIP Hacks contains only a small subset of VoIP knowledge-enough to serve as an introduction to the world of VoIP and teach you how to use it to save money, be more productive, or just impress your friends. If you love to tinker and optimize, this is the one technology, and the one book, you must investigate.

Nothing Short of Genius.......2007-02-10
I've been in telephony and networking for nearly 30 years. Started in R&D at a PBX manufacturer in 1979, then did a stretch with the, at that time, worlds largest Ethernet company. Then I worked on a Fiber Optic Voice and Data MAN (IEEE 802.6) and have been manufacturing telecom products for the past 14 years. I think that gives me the qualifications to critique this book even without having to mention the Ethernet board I designed for IBM was featured on the cover of PC Week Magazine in 1987.
This is a very good book. If you are a VoIP systems integrator or do anything with Asterisk, this book is a must have. There are major problems with the current state of the VoIP industry. The two biggest problems are security and the unavailability of a decent broadband connection with QoS and an SLA below $400 per MegaBit. Yes $400, but we're talking guaranteed availability and less than 0.5% packet loss, and 50mS or less latency with real penalties for not meeting the SLA.
Before reading this book I would not have considered putting an IP-PBX on an ADSL link. The author's idea of putting a Sangoma ADLS modem in the Linux box with PPPoE client software and controlling the modem queue is nothing short of genius. Then to top it off with the AstShape QoS scripts and the QoS monitoring tools, this book is an absolute bargain. With these tools I'll not only know if the ADSL connection is capable of supporting VoIP service, but I'll know exactly why. Much better than cutting over to the VoIP system and later discovering the problems. The whole book is just full of great ideas. There is something in this book for everybody from the Skype user to a single VoIP phone owner, Asterisk, or enterprise PBX administrators. Just check out the Table of Contents. Amazon does not have the Table of Contents available but it is on the O'Reilly website oreilly D0T C0M.
While the book is an asset for seasoned VoIP integrators, it is also a very good resource for someone completely unfamiliar with VoIP with a desire to learn. You can start out with free software for a Windows PC, progress to purchasing a single VoIP phone, then to a Linux PC. If you are leary of Linux, either get over it or you should probably stay out of VoIP altogether.
VOIP : for the serious home user or enterprise deployment.......2006-07-27
Voice over IP, as with most emerging technologies, in the process of shaking up the world, in this case Public Switched Telephone Network and Plain Old Telephony Service. The author starts of the book off at the most basic entry point for most consumers into the world of VoIP, which is background about the main commerical carriers such as Vonage. The introductary chapters continue to build on the most elementary approach, giving the reader advice on modifying the soft phone[s] that the respective carriers will allow or provide to the consumers, such as alternating ring tones. It isn't long before Ted is explaining how to compeletly re-wire the house over to a pure VoIP infastructure using the existing wiring in your home as well as an, or the ATA provided by the carrier. While this is undoubtly over the casual readers head and possibly comfort level it is good see that this option is explored and explained for those that might not be aware of this solution.
Of course, other VoIP solutions are explored. Skype, is mentioned and basic features are explored, although the detail provided on Skype is not as detailed as those of other solutions, which maybe due to the coverage for Skype under the Skype Hacks book. However, the coverage for building your own VoIP via Asterisk is quite detailed and in-depth. Options that explored for this approach, are call forwarding, hold music, voice mail applications and distinctive ring as well as basic advice on setting up and compiling the application. The process appears to be able to easy to implement, but alas was not tried due to this reviewers use of Skype for his VoIP needs.
Also in the closing chapters of the book, issues of improving QoS are addressed as is the legacy signalling protocol that H.323 is since the adoption of SIP. Since QoS is vital to ensuring that VoIP traffic receives the bandwidth that it needs Ted gives us some basic commands to find out if there is jitter [dropped datagrams] and some ways to fix this issue. However, it should be noted that this chapter, as with most of the later half of the book is more in line for larger scale operations that use Linux/Unix and building their own office VoIP solutions.
To summarize, VoIP hacks does offer something for everyone, although the hacks provided in the latter chapters are geared to the enterprise level deployment of VoIP. That's not to say that the information is not relevant or even eye opening, just the average home user will find little to apply this to.
VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!.......2006-07-09
Do you love to tinker and optimize? If you do, then this book is for you! Author Ted Wallingford, has done an outstanding job of writing a book that contains only a small subset of VoIP knowledge; but, enough to serve as an introduction to the world of VoIP and teach you how to use it to save money, be more productive, or just impress your friends.
Wallingford, begins by introducing you to some Internet based VoIP phone service providers who can help you replace your traditional phone line with a cost-saving, feature-rich VoIP line. Then, the author shows you how to customize and maximize productivity-enhancing telephony applications. He also introduces you to Skype and Skyping. Next, the author shows you how to install, configure, and hack Asterisk, an open source PBX. Then, he continues by showing you how to add hardware hacks to your VoIP setup--and how to customize them. The author also explains how you can monitor VoIP and troubleshoot it using traditional admin tools. Finally, the author shows you how to use hard-core voice.
In this most excellent practical guide, the author provides dozens of hands-on projects for building a VoIP network. More importantly, he shows you how to tweak and customize hardware and software to get the job done.
Both fun and informative.......2006-03-09
I enjoyed reading this book. It's got great information on the different VoIP services and how they work. And it has a bunch of fun recipes that you can use to play with the services. I really enjoyed the one about altering your voice. As well as the information on how to record iChat and Skype. That is really handy.
Fun Read For VoIP Geeks.......2006-02-09
VoIP isn't just a fad or the hot thing in the computer/Internet world, it's what is beginning to, and eventually WILL replace the old style AT&T phone system that has predominated in the world for the past 100 or so years. With the availability of high speed Internet and the technology to go along with it, VoIP (voice over IP) has re-engineered how we talk to each other, making voice communication faster, quicker, and CHEAPER than ever before. AT&T and the big phone companies have long raped consumers of their hard-earned dollars with tons of fees and overpriced "features". Its was only a matter of time before a better alternative came about, and now it's here and the # of new VoIP users that come online every day is staggering. As a user of VoIP I can tell you that I personally love it, and I would never go back to the old land line connection.
If you enjoy learning about VoIP and you want to learn how to do more with it, this book is for you. Going beyond the regular setup "tricks", VoIP lists out plenty of fun and interesting things to do with your VoIP connection. Whether it's downloading little applications to track your usage or learning how to control the lights in your home with your IP phone, this book will please all the geeks out there in the world who need to go past simply using their connection, needing to get into the guts of how it all works.
If you want to learn more about VoIP and some of the fun things you can do with it, this is a fun book to add to your collection.

Book Description
If you've heard about Skype--and who hasn't with all the recent media attention devoted to internet telephone services--chances are you've been mighty tempted to try it out. Skype Hacks tells you what all the Skype hype is about, explains the basics, and shows you more than 100 clever tips and tricks for tweaking and tuning Skype to make it do just what you want and more.
Millions of people (48 million and counting, in fact) have opted for Skype, which uses peer-to-peer (P2P) technology to turn any PC, Mac, or Pocket PC into a telephone. Skype offers free calls between computers and extremely cheap calls to "old-fashioned" phone numbers (landlines and mobile phones). The sound quality is excellent, and end-to-end encryption means the connection is private and secure.
But if you really know what you're doing, Skype can accomplish a whole lot more than that. Software developer and author Andrew Sheppard recently converted his entire house to Skype and uses it for all his personal and business calls, even when he's traveling. In Skype Hacks, he shows you how to do things with the technology that even the engineers at Skype probably never intended.
Skype Hacks shows you how to:
- Get started with Skype
- Figure out how much money you're saving and maximize your savings
- Cut the ties to your old phone company
- Optimize your Skype configuration
- Integrate Skype with desktop tools like Microsoft Office and your web browser
- Set up a Skype-based call center
The book offers ideas for creating and organizing a contacts list, using Skype to transfer files, taking advantage of chat and voicemail capabilities, turning a PDA into a mobile phone, and automating Skype for even greater efficiency. So whether you'd simply like to give Skype a trial run, you want new Skype ring tones and fun on-hold music, or you're considering wiring your home with Skype to get rid of "regular" phone service altogether, Skype Hacks is your ideal guide.

Save your money for more SkypeOut minutes.......2006-09-05
A generally well-written book, but offers few nifty insights to save more money or get more service. Look, download Skype and start using it; if you want to go beyond what's obvious from simple use, google will have what few insights are out there; no book will offer a wealth of tips because Skype isn't that kind of produce/service. Secret commands or "hacks" just don't exist for Skype.
And why does the author put that bizzare tip on how to physically cut your phone lines??
The one thing I really wanted to have more info on--how to integrate Skype long distance into your existing home phones with Skype's products under Shop->Accessories--the book barely mentioned as Option 1 of several. Very little help.
VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!.......2006-08-20
Are you a novice or a hardcore Skyper who wants to play with Skype's innards? If you are, then this book is for you! Author Andrew Sheppard, has done an outstanding job of writing a book that shows you how to save money by using Skype; and, how to remove boundaries imposed by having lived within the confines of your regular phone system for so long, a system that has been in stasis for decades--dumb, lifeless, and unmoving.
Sheppard, begins by explaining what Skype is and how it works, and introduces Skype's main features. Then, the author focuses on the economics of Skype and the ways of figuring potential savings. Next, he focuses on Skype configuration, by showing you how to improve performance, and customize Skype to meet your individual needs. The author then shows you how to improve and enhance your communication while on the move. He continues by showing you the fun and playful side of Skype. Then, the author shows you how to hack around with Skype's other major features; namely, instant messaging or chat, and voicemail. Next, he shows you how to have the visibility you require within the Skype community, and how you can be secure against some of the more common risks encountered by Skype users. The author continues by showing you how to deal with Skype limitations. Then, the author gives you a glimpse of Skype add-on products and tools that are currently available, and a sense of what is yet to come. Finally, he introduces you to the Skype API and how you can extend Skype's functionality and automate repetitive tasks using scripting methods: VBScript on Windows, Python on Linux, and AppleScript on Mac OS X.
This most excellent book aims to liberate your imagination and show, in a practical hands-on way, how Skype can do amazing new things--sometimes things that even its creators never envisioned. More importantly, this book shows you how to make Skype work for you.
A range of new possibilities for those tired of the confusion of internet telephony options.......2006-06-05
Andrew Sheppard's Skype Hacks: Tips & Tools For Cheap, Fun, Innovative Phone Service tells how to make the Internet telephony Skype application work well. Haven't heard of Skype? It brings a range of new possibilities for those tired of the confusion of internet telephony options, and Skype Hacks covers all the basics; from how to set up a Skype server and put shortcuts on the computer to avoiding Skype problems and spammers. The program may be newer but the idea of money-saving internet telephony just went up a notch with the ease Skype Hacks Offers.
Download the program, get this book, enjoy quality VOIP at home.......2006-04-20
Skype is one of the most popular VOIP applications for the individual user and small office on the market today. If you have already installed it or are considering installing it then you will want this book so you can configure it to work the way you want it to work and head off any problems before they occur. The first thing I have to say about Skype is that it is so user friendly that many of the hacks in this book are unnecessary. It is easy enough to figure out how to make conference calls, transfer calls, forward calls and do various other common tasks. On the other hand, there are a lot of useful tips including how to claim your money back if something goes wrong, avoiding additional mobile phone charges, building a Skype server, working with routers, using Skype at work, working with privacy issues, and add-on products. Because Skype is a peer-to-peer network service it is very important to understand the privacy and security issues and the author does a great job of both explaining them as well as how to work with them. Skype Hacks is highly recommended for advanced computer users or anyone responsible for administering Skype in a business environment.
The first book you should get after downloading Skype..........2006-02-01
Given that I have a number of international colleagues, you'd think that Skype would be a must-have piece of software for me. But I downloaded it during the initial beta and it never really gained traction on my radar screen. All that may now change after reading Skype Hacks - Tips & Tools for Cheap, Fun, Innovative Phone Service by Andrew Sheppard.
Contents: Start Using Skype; Save Money with Skype; Configure Skype; Tweak and Tune Skype; Skype at Work; Mobile Skype; Skype Fun and Play; Skype Chat and Voicemail; Security and Privacy; Quirks, Gotchas, and Workarounds; Skype Add-Ons and Tools; Automate Skype; Index
Skype has become the path of least resistance for people starting to explore Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology, because its easy and free. When I first downloaded Skype during the beta period, it seemed like an interesting concept. But I found that most of the people I'd want to talk with weren't on Skype. Now it's changed, and I think I'll be running Skype on a regular basis. Skype Hacks takes a pretty comprehensive tour through the software and covers 100 "hacks" (tips and tricks) you can do to get the most out of the software. For some, the first couple of chapters will be more than enough... how to get started on Skype, how to set the software up, and how you can use Skype to replace your regular phone (or at least reduce your monthly bills). But if you're already past that point, the rest of the chapters will allow you to venture into areas you may not have known about. For instance, the Automate Skype chapter shows a number of scripts you can use to interact with Skype programmatically. Great if you want to have an agent send you a chat message when something is completed. Or take the Skype Add-Ons chapter... There's a website called skyperunner.com that allows you to send a chat message to a Skype user without having to be logged on to the service. Great if you want to send a message to someone in an asynchronous fashion. And using Skype to practice your foreign language skills with willing Skype users around the world was something that never occurred to me...
So, if you've downloaded Skype and used the basic functionality, great. A copy of this book will take you to the next step and open up some interesting possibilities...
