Pretty Good Review .......2006-08-18
This book has really helped me refresh my memory in math. It's a little hard to follow if you are learning some of the stuff for the first time. Also, I found several mistakes in the book. Some of the answers were missing, and some of the answers on the sample problems were wrong. You might be able to find another book similar to this for cheaper.

I teach Intermediate Algebra for a two year college in the North East Georgia Mountains. My students using this text have had great success in focusing their study time when preparing for the Compass Test. The book is laid out in short 2 - 6 page chapters and does an excellent job at keeping the information compact and precise. Students studying for the compass exam are sure to find the text's layout and design easy to read and understand. Each section gives students the opportunity to work sample exam problems and provides answers to these problems at the end of the text.

Description:
This article presents two applications of extreme value theory (EVT) to financial markets: computation of value at risk (VaR) and cross-section dependence of extreme returns (i.e., tail dependence). We use a sample comprised of the United States, Europe, Asia, and Latin America. Our main findings are the following. First, on average, EVT gives the most accurate estimate of VaR. Second, tail dependence of paired returns decreases substantially when both heteroscedasticity and serial correlation are filtered out by a multivariate GARCH model. Both findings are in agreement with previous research in this area for other financial markets.

This book's focus makes statutes, and the processes that produce them, the primary consideration. Traditional teaching materials tend to make statutes and the circumstances of their creation secondary; students encounter the legislative process and legislative materials chiefly, sometimes exclusively, through the eyes of judges. In contrast, two of the three principal chapters of this book are organized around the enactment of two particular statutes -- one late Nineteenth Century, the second late Twentieth Century. These chapters expose students to primary documents reflecting the quite different processes by which these two statutes were enacted, and invite them to reach conclusions about their meaning, in advance of any exposure to judicial interpretations -- just as lawyers would typically be required to do in practice. The latter of these two chapters also includes extensive selections from the secondary literature to help put the current debates between textualists and purposivists in sharp focus. The intervening chapter deals in a more conventional way with the development and use of the purpose/intent-oriented methods of interpretation that characterized mid-Twentieth Century judicial practice.

In fact, this is not the case - the variability of large rivers indicates that other important factors are involved. While Henty is a good read it is definitely a kids book. Do not expect much depth to the story. The story is quick, exciting, and predictable. Fun and accurate but not too involved. A good book if you know what to expect.

My son was given this book on tape as a gift. It ended up being a gift for the entire family. Henty writes very good and interesting historical fiction that has wide appeal. Although most of his books focus on young men in history, my daughter also found the story of Wulf very interesting and entertaining.
Exciting, historically accurate action-adventure!.......1999-09-02
I received this book to read as a school assignment. After I read the first ten pages, I thought it was going to be pretty boring. I mean, how interesting is a book about getting in a quarrel about tripping over someone's feet. I wondered how Henty managed to write a book that goes on for 360 pages with really small print that kept going on like that. Then, I decided to read a little more. The second chapter wasn't quite as bad so I read a little more, until it got so interesting I didn't want to stop!
G. A. Henty wrote a scores of historical fiction stories about the Middle Ages and other time periods, including Ancient Civilizations, the Renaissance, and even journeys to the new world. At the turn of the century, he was a renowned author, especially among high-school boys. I am surprised that he has been almost completely forgotten today. Henty is a marvelous author who wrote exciting, historically accurate, action-adventure books.
Wulf is a Saxon thane who is under the command of Earl Harold of Wessex. He is always by Harold's side, ready for adventure with his right-hand man Osgod and his best friend Beorn. They fight the Welsh, the Bretons, Vikings, and finally the Normans under the command of the Duke of Normandy, a.k.a. William the Conqueror at the final conflict at Hastings.
If all Henty's books are like this one, I'm going to ask my parents to order the whole set! The only downside to investing your time in this book is the beginning is a little slow. But after that, It's Great! I can't wait to read the next one.

Wulf the Saxon is about Wulf and his friend Osgod and how they have many adventures in England and France. They protect the King of England from several plots. The book is maily about William the Conqueror's conquest of England and the Battle of Hastings. Overall it was a very good book and I could hardly put it down. I have read several Henty books and it is one of my top 5 favorites. I suggest you get this book.
