Poorly done, slapped together.......2005-02-13
Well, what can you say when you've read a book that shows little desire to convey any meaningful information in any meaningful way? Howard appears to have done a paste up of old news and well known "insights" into what looks like a book, but doesn't really read like one.
Worst sin? They didn't even take the time to format the "graphs" horizontally on the page, or with text. Every time you look at one of these graphs to try to understand the point Howard is making, you have to page ahead and turn the book 90 degrees and try to remember just what HA was getting at. By the time he mentions the 3rd graph you're already skipping ahead.
This is my first Howard Abell book and I have two pieces of good news: first, since I borrowed the book from the library I'm not out any $$$ (although I still feel cheated by the time I put in) and second, it's the last Howard Abell book I will ever read.
(I have a library of maybe $2,000 worth of investment books, so it's not like I won't buy a book of some value. Stick with Weinstein, Tharp, Morris, Nison, McMillan, Bill Williams.)
lots of pages and little content.......2000-10-01
I read about five books on trading techniques in the last four weeks before writing this review, and liked this one least of all. I never actually count pages in a book when writing a review, but I was so much surprised how such a (considerably) thick book can contain so little useful information that I made an exception. Judge by yourself: the structure of this book is as follows:
The first 35 pages (sec. 1-3) is a broad introduction into the psychology of successful day trading, which says all correct things but its style is so dry that you would rather skip to the next section than to read it carefully. Even if you do read every word, you will get such absolutely correct but next to useless statements as the following recipe for successful trading (p.33): "1) identify an opportunity, 2) take immediate action (buy or cell), and 3) feel good no matter the result as long as the trade is consistent with you specific method or technical bias and was based on probability".
The second part of the book (Sec. 4) uses another 50 pages for interviews with several successful traders. This section is not too bad, although one cannot expect to learn much about techniques of successful individuals (even assuming that they are willing to disclose all their secrets) from 6-10 page-long interviews.
The third part on technical analysis is the most useful part of the book. It discusses how to identify trends and select entry points. Unfortunately, the charts used to illustrate the text are too numerous and large, and the text itself tends to be somewhat on the side of general statements. It is sufficient to say that about 50 out of 80 pages in this section are charts, and in my opinion only about 10 pages contain really useful concrete practical wisdom. These 10 pages were very useful since they suggest analysis techniques which I have not seen anywhere else, but its only 10 pages out of 260!
The rest of the book, about another 100 pages, is essentially a large appendix with lists of all NASDAQ and S&P-500 stocks, long excerpts from the TradeCast 3.0 user manual (who needs this section? those who bought this program had presumably gotten the full manual, and those who do not own it do not need these excerpts), and a glossary.
My advice: don't waste your time and money, there is so many better books around than this one.
WHERE'S THE BEEF.......2000-09-06
Pages 3-50 of this book is dealing with some what useful information, for the novice invester. Pages 51-70 testimonials from professianal Traders is exciting and interesting. I found from pages 80-175 useful and worth my reading, I must mention that half those pages had charts. Pages 177-196 names and stock symbols, again probley for the novice. Pages 197-256 Appendix B Excerpts from the TradeCast 3.0 user manual, why I would want this unless I was going to buy the program and my hope would be that the manual would cover this, and then again maybe this book is the manual for the program and they just forgot to send the program?. Pages 257-267 Glossary, Further Reading, and the Index.
Summary-For $40.00 and 269 pages, I found 90 pages (half of those charts) dealing with the Authors title(Moving from One Winning Position to the Next) or as a very famous advertisment slogan goes..... WHERE'S THE BEEF
Good Day Trading Boook.......2000-08-28
I have now read 4 of Howard's books and think they give a lot of useful information to traders. I recommend this one and The Electronic trading of Options. Day Trader's Advantage is also very good. I also like Murphy's and Schwager's books.
0 STARS.......2000-08-24
I don't know who wrote the other reviews, but i guess they were abell's relatives. This is the worst book ever. Two pages of real information. I learned absolutely nothing from this book. After reading lynch, o'neil , motley fool and many other great books; I am insulted by this book.

Book Description
By describing the remarkable forces that formed and shaped our ever-changing world, Earth Story gives us a new understanding of the planet and our place within its evolution.
When and how was Earth formed? What is the link between earthquakes, volcanoes, and the creation of continents? How do mountains affect our climate? What triggers ice ages? Earth Story answers these and many other questions as it tells the amazing story of our planet and its constantly changing nature.
Two centuries ago, scientists began to investigate the history of Earth by examining the rocks beneath its surface and began to formulate the astonishing concept of geological time. Using this discovery as their starting point, Simon Lamb and David Sington unravel the fascinating history of Earth from its earliest beginnings to the dawn of human civilization, using full-color illustrations, stunning photography, and the latest scientific thinking.
Customer Reviews:
A Beautiful book: wonderful illustrations, comprehensive treatment of modern geology.......2006-08-11
This is a great volume. It accompanies the BBC TV series of the same name. Unfortunately this wonderful TV series has never been released on DVD. The book is magnificently illustrated and provides the layman with a comprehensive and competent overview of modern geology since the rise of plate tectonics.
I'd recommend reading it in tandem with University of Melbourne geologist Ian Plimer's "Short History of Planet Earth". Plimer's volume deals with some of the more controversial issues, supervolcanoes, global warming etc. Still the best companion for Simon Lamb's book is the TV series. Hopefully one day the BBC will get around to releasing it on DVD.
Origins Explained.......2000-08-23
As a person who never studied much science, I have always been interested in the origins our world and how it came into being. The theories of earth science were explained thoroughly even to a layman like myself. This book has convinced me to delve even deeper into geology and seek the answers to the creation of my local surroundings. I now wish had chosen my university courses differently when I was younger. Bravo!!
Very interesting and full of information on many subjects........1999-08-09
This book is great if you are looking to explore the origins of the earth, and what makes the earth work. It explains all the steps that made life on earth possible. Each chapter contains thorough information on different subjects from the ice-age to the actuall formation of the solar-system itself. I think this is an awsome book. I understood all of it and I am 15!!! Buy this book!! Its great!!
First-class!.......1999-07-13
This is a must-have! I'm a geologist myself and although Ihaven't seen the television series on which the book is based (I haveno tv), most of my colleagues were watching and raving about it with great admiration. The book was immediately ordered for the library of our institution.
But don't take my word for it!
On June 2, 1999 David Sington, who is the producer and writer of the series and co-writer of the book, received the Sullivan Award at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston. The Sullivan Award is presented annually by the American Geophysical Union (AGU) for reporting that makes earth science accessible and interesting to the general public. It is named for its first winner, the late Walter Sullivan of The New York Times. Sington was the first broadcaster and first non-American to win the award in its 11 year history.
His name is associated with other great works related to geology and other sciences as well. Both authors know what they're talking about and had co-operated with many scientists on this production. A wide range of geological issues is tackled and they're all tackled admirably.
And I'm not in any way associated with the authors either. I'm just very happy to see earth science treated this way. END

An Introduction to Ultra Wideband Communication Systems (Prentice Hall Communications Engineering and Emerging Technologies Series)
ASIN: 9775945100 |
Product Description
Ultrawideband (UWB) communication systems offer an unprecedented opportunity to impact the future communication world. The enormous available bandwidth, the wide scope of the data rate / range trade-off, as well as the potential for very low-cost operation leading to pervasive usage, all present a unique opportunity for UWB systems to impact the way people and intelligent machines communicate and interact with their environment. The aim of this book is to provide an overview of the state of the art of UWB systems from theory to applications. Due to the rapid progress of multidisciplinary UWB research, such an overview can only be achieved by combining the areas of expertise of several scientists in the field. More than 30 leading UWB researchers and practitioners have contributed to this book covering the major topics relevant to UWB. These topics include UWB signal processing, UWB channel measurement and modeling, higher-layer protocol issues, spatial aspects of UWB signaling, UWB regulation and standardization, implementation issues, and UWB applications as well as positioning. The book is targeted at advanced academic researchers, wireless designers, and graduate students wishing to greatly enhance their knowledge of all aspects of UWB systems.

Customer Reviews:
Great for my Literature Class. . . BUT.......2004-07-04
I bought this book for my college Literature class, overpaid as usual too. After a semester of use, the cover is falling apart, the pages are thin and rip easily and all of the paper is of a material that is hard to clean pencil marks from.
However, it is a great book. It contains a wealth of poems, stories and advice between the poorly-made pages. And, since the pages are thin, it wasn't as heavy to lug around campus. Very good content though, as I said. The stories are multi-national, there is abstract and realistic, old-fashioned and very modern, some ancient and even the lyrics to 1960's folk songs! One of my favorite lines in the book is "Margaret are you weeping over golden grove unleafing?" I also like the old sailors poem Western Wind "Western wind when wilt though blow? The small rain down can rain. Christ that my love were in my arms and I in my bed again."
Perhaps it helps that my literature professor is top notch and a noted author as well (Kent Meyers "The Work of Wolves") but he really made me love this book! There is gold within these pages, a very good choice for teaching college students to truly appreciate the many genres of literature from around the world and through the ages.
Misleading.......2004-04-28
I ordered the 13th edition and received the 5th edition. The order was clearly placed for the 13th edition; it had the caption, picture and everything, when I ordered. Then When I received the wrong book I e-mailed back to see what happened and they replied that I didn't see their small caption at the bottom that read 5th edition. This captioned was not available when I purchased the book.
Helpful for my Lit class. Book VERY POORLY MADE!!!.......2003-01-16
This book was very useful for my Introduction to Literature class. (Naturally) Contains works from many of the great authors.
I am VERY,VERY disapointed in the overall quality of the book. DON'T BUY THE PAPER BACK EDITION. Get it in hard back if you can. With my copy of this book, as well as, the copies that belonged to several other members of my Lit. class, the binding broke and the book fell apart. Now I can't resell it.
Another Great Anthology Literature.......2000-04-04
Currently a college student who is currently using this book for the third (last year) quarter of english. This is what i would consider a great anthology filled with many literature. How this differs from other books is that it contains a ton of plays, drama, rather then just short stories found in other anthologies. For mostly short stories divided into major sections, i recommend a book called An Introduction to Literature by author, ABACARION. It has poems, short stories, plays, and essays divided into major topics including "culture and identity, conformity and rebellion, and innocense to experience which are major topics covered in college."
