This is a survival guide for the ruthless and uncaring world of business--and it works well for political, military, and academic careers as well. In "Conduct Expected for the 21st Century," William Lareau lays down 142 "hard facts and expected conducts" in 13 chapters. These are fleshed out with a few diagrams, several antecedents, and brief explanations. Designed with the business professional, this list of rules guides us in displaying the proper careerist mindset. Sometimes, "getting the job done" gets in the way of career progression! Lareau doesn't advocate immoral or illegal conduct; going to prison is a career killer! Appearances are everything!
Most of Lareau's hard facts and conduct expected are "common sense," and should have been taught in business school. A few rules are counter-intuitive, but still true: "humans are designed to survive in a world that no longer exists." "Justice and fairness do not exist." "Never forget that you are viewed as a necessary nuisance." It struck me as odd, but "get used to the fact that organizations abhor aggression" is just as true in a military career as in the business world--corporations claim to admire aggression, but aggressive individuals are a threat to the power structure.
Ever wonder why Congress is full of career politicians? Why American politics is so fouled up? Politics is a business, and "Conduct Expected" applies to the U.S. Congress just as it does to Starbucks or WalMart or ITT. Brown nosing is required for career survival--but brown nosing with style. Bribery used to be standard accepted business practice in the United States, and is still considered obligatory in most of the national governments recognized by the United Nations. "Humans do not like change and seek to maintain their views of the world." You aren't going to change the way others do business--all you can do is change the way YOU do business. "Conduct Expected" doesn't directly address finding yourself in a situation where you must break US law or your career ends, but the guidelines provided in job selection should prevent your getting into that situation--or if you find yourself in an environment where you soon will be a felon, you will have the tools to rapidly extricate yourself. Conducting damage control may brand you as a "whistle blower," which will make you unemployable. Going to prison is a career killer, too. Life ain't fair, so you have to take care of yourself. Lareau addresses establishing a support network on and off the job to enhance your career.
"Conduct Expected for the 21st Century" is my most important business guidebook. I more or less trashed my own military career because I lacked the careerist mind-set. It is arguable if I would have heeded Lareau's advice 30 years ago, but it would have been nice to have "Conduct Expected" when I began my military career!
He's Right, You Know.......2002-03-29
When I was a younger (20ish) person, I used to get in hot water with my bosses ALL the time. I had no clue as to what a huge PITA I was in the workplace. I picked up "Conduct Expected" in a bookstore during one of my darker weeks working with corporate (conformist) attorneys and could not put it down. Since lunch hour was about over, I had to buy it to take it with me.
That first book lays down ground rules that are definitely important for junior people just starting in the workplace. After being a working person for 20+ years, I know what rules to bend, but your average 24 year old does not. I'd give this to a recent college graduate, for example.
I recently picked up the most recent one and found that old Paul's gotten much darker and more cynical about the workplace. I love him madly for it. He compares corporate types to primates and compares the bum-kissing at the office with literal bum-kissing ("tuberosity maintenance") in primate troops. "Demented" is the word that came to mind. I thoroughly enjoyed this edition - relished it. After you read this book, rent "Office Space". It will cheer you up in Dark Times. Unlike "Dilbert", Lareau lays it out for you and gives you some commonsense rules to keep upper management happy and make your work life simpler and more productive.

The material presented in this work is concise and clearly directed. It is by far the most useful guide available to anyone navigating the modern work place.
This book will help people make sense out of their work environment, will improve their "boss-managership" skills, improve their co-worker relations, and enhance their career development.
Perhaps even more important is that by knowing and following the rules it will help reduce accidental exposure to career limiting mistakes.
The advice and guidance is provided through short sections that highlight organizational situations and relationships and then provides instructive commentary.
This edition is very similar to the first but has enough updating to make owning both worthwhile in my opinion. The previous edition had a set of check lists to help develop "rule following" behaviors in the work place. I enjoyed using the checklist to help identify and improve my organizational performance and miss not seeing some of them in the new edition.
I have recommended this to others who have in turn made recommendations to people who also have benefitted from the advice provided. Feedback has always been overwhelming positive.

Mixed Bag.......1998-09-07
Expected Conduct is essentially a list of 142 pretty good rules for conducting yourself to get ahead in your carreer. Unfortunately the author has also seized the opportunity to express his contempt for humanity. Your best bet is to read enough on each rule to understand its meaning and skip the presumptuous explanatory opinion. Dilbert is funny. This author is not.

One of my favorite books by Mitch is StorySelling for FA's. I like Your Clients for Life even more. Many advisors have many so many clients that the relationships seem a mile wide but only an inch deep. Mitch's book provides questions to strengthen those relationships that matter the most to the advisor. During the 1980's and 1990's, the focus was on gathering assets and lots of clients. The successful advisors of the future will have fewer clients with much stronger relationships, which will help them gain quality referrals. This books walks the advisor through each step they'll need. What a great guide!
Ultimately Disappointing.......2003-12-17
Mitch Anthony missed the mark with this book. It seems rushed. The book starts off very strong but ultimately disappoints. The biggest problem is that Mitch, who is an excellent speaker and communicator, doesn't tell us how to implement "life planning". Perhaps this is because this is a new field with few proven models. It is not the Definitive Guide to Becomming a Life Planner that the subtitle claims. Mitch, I know you can do better. Forget the deadlines and create a work from your heart. That is what life planning is really all about.
Get MItch's Book!.......2002-06-27
I was priviledged to get an advance copy of Mitch's book. What a great find! Everyone in the industry is always talking about "life planning" but few have given us a good picture of what it should be. Mitch does that. In today's volatile investing world, those advisers who stick strictly to managing assets will find more problems keeping clients and manging their expectations. Using the techniques offered in life planning, you have a good chance at keeping your clients for life. This book is a keeper.

They argue persuasively that nativism is a form of American racism.

Nativism--an intense opposition to immigrants and other non- native members of society--has been deeply imbedded in the American character from the earliest days of the nation. Correspondingly, nativism, overtly or covertly, has always permeated our national discourse. Dating from the Alien and Sedition controversy of 1798 to California's recent Proposition 187, nativism has long been a driving force in policy making, a particular irony in a country founded and populated by immigrants.
This anthology of original essays is informed at its core by George Santayana's famous edict that those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it. Fine historical work.......1999-02-12
Mr. Perea has assembled a fine group of articles from various scholars, showing the different sides of modern nativism. Facts are inserted into the often heated debate about immigrants, and as a result a more logical outlook takes place. Not a must-have work, but interesting for those who desire to study the topic of immigration in any depth as well as for those who care about policy discussions in this country.

Sections dealing with difficult physical and chemical concepts have been developed on the basis of feedback from the first edition, making this an ideal learning tool for oceanography students.
Chapter 1 summarizes the special properties of water and the role of the oceans in the hydraulic cycle. The distribution of temperature and salinity in the oceans and how they influence water density and movements is then discussed. Light and sound in seawater are considered next, along with some uses of acoustics. These are followed by an examination of the composition and behaviour of dissolved constituents, including such topics as residence times, the control of pH, and redox relationships.
Finally, the history of seawater and its role in global cycles is reviewed, with special reference to climatic change and the CO2 problem.

This is the book you want if you need to solve real compressible flow problems. It covers all the basics plus there's tons of advanced materials. I especially like the fact that there are numerous detailed examples and coding templates. In addition, the book contains a very extensive reference, allowing the reader to go back to the orginal papers.

Have to agree with Mark, this book is quite superb. Professor Toro does a superb job - it took me from knowing nothing about shock capture to being able to write my own high resolution code in about six months. Coupled with the Numerica software it is an invaluable tool for learning about compressible flow.
Outstanding text or reference for graduate level CFD!.......1998-12-01
By far the best computational fluid dynamics text I have come across during my thesis research! The author presents modern shock-capturing numerical methods for solving the time-dependent hyperbolic conservation laws in multiple dimensions with exceptional clarity. Most of the text focuses on Godunov methods and is littered with practical applications and discussions for those with a limited background in CFD. In addition, Toro presents a simpler interpretation of his WAF method. In terms of readability, I found this book to be far superior. It will undoubtedly become as indispensible in the CFD field as those by Fletcher, Hirsch and LeVeque!

"Doctor Glas" (1905), by Hjalmar Soderberg (1869-1941), is the philosophically conflicted diary of Tyko Glas, a young medical doctor in Stockholm, Sweden's largest city, in the form of his personal written diary. He tells us he is just thirty years old and looking for adventure, a progressive and aesthetic intellectual in a conservative city. He disdains the many requests he receives for abortions, invariably turning them away, not of his own beliefs, but because he fears Sweden's hypocritical society would ostracize him.
One day a young lady named Helga provides his life a twist, coming to his examination room, pleading for him to declare she has an "infection of the womb", so her husband of six years, Pastor Gregorius, will not touch her sexually. In truth, she has another man in mind. Glas knows Gregorius personally, and despises him for his own reasons, but after some moral agonizing, the young doctor takes the bull by the horns, "diagnosing" Gregorius with a "weak heart", telling him sex could kill him. This medically-enforced chastity drives Gregorius mad, and he "rapes" his wife out of frustration one night. To diffuse the elevating tension, Gregorius takes a brief trip to another town, during which his wife openly appears in public with her lover back home on Stockholm's streets. Glas, the first-person narrator of this book, reflects on the meaning of life, recalling the young girls he knew earlier in life, admitting he has never held a female in an embrace, and finding himself falling in love with Helga himself.
In his diary, Glas wonders if abortion and murder are not similar, in the sense that both relieve a burden of life. Glas wonders if Gregorius could justifiably be killed to relieve the "burden" upon his wife Helga. He reflects on morality, love, sex, and religion, his thoughts become increasingly feverish. He debates the issue through his diary, turning through various twists of logic, trying to find a relative position which is simultaneously moral and expedient. He even goes so far as to prepare two tablets of potassium cyanide, one for the pastor, and one for himself, should his plan go badly. He clearly loses mental clarity with his obsession over this issue.
Will he actually try to kill Gregorius? Will he woo Helga for himself? Will he drop the entire issue, and snap back to reality? Will he accomplish the impossible reconciliation between morality and his impulses? The resolution will be an interesting one, but Glas will offer only one insight: "Life, I do not understand you."
The book itself is nicely written, the prose lovely of description, polite, high-toned, and at times romantic, and the subject matter frank, from schoolboy wonderment and embarrassment, to "husband's rights" and the moral place of abortion, euthanasia, murder, love, sex, infidelity, and unrequited love in society. The narration is elegant, and this brief novel (150pp) is actually surprisingly substantial. The tone is thoughtful throughout, and an interesting book to read.
