In today's increasingly complex business world, partnerships are continually becoming more important and more ubiquitous. Along with those traditional relationships customarily forged between colleagues working for the same company, however, the associations crafted between customers, vendors, unions, and even competitors may actually be the ones that ultimately make or break a business venture. And Chip R. Bell and Heather Shea, consultants as well as top-level executives, believe that the usually neglected "irrational, illogical and emotional" aspects of such coalitions are the real keys to their success. They dissect the heart and soul of these critical alliances in Dance Lessons: Six Steps to Great Partnerships in Business & Life, and in the process offer pragmatic suggestions for forming, maintaining, and, when necessary, dissolving them. Building on the metaphor identified in their title, prolific author Bell and former dancer-actor Shea convincingly point out the unexpected similarities that exist between partnerships in the boardroom and partnerships on the dance floor--and persuasively outline the benefits that can be derived from proficiency at each. "Partnerships are forever becoming and never complete," they write. "Like great dances, great partnerships are never perfect; there is always another lesson to be learned, another routine to be practiced." --Howard Rothman

Book Description

Organizations today are lean, agile, and focused, which means that partnerships are more crucial than ever to success. From outsourcing to strategic alliances, businesses depend on partners to help them meet marketplace challenges and achieve financial goals. But what does a good partnership depend on? There are many books that explain the organizational dynamics. But until now, no book has focused on the single most important component: the human factor.

3 out of 5 stars A Solid Effort!.......2001-06-21

Chip R. Bell and Heather Shea take a crack at a much overlooked business skill: partnering. While many management gurus espouse the growing importance of partnerships and alliances to modern business, advice on how to actually implement and manage these relationships is much harder to find. Dance Lessons uses simple, emotional language in mapping out guidelines for successful partnering. These guidelines tend more toward general, interpersonal relationships than specific business cases. In fact, much of the book’s content could be re-titled “How to Have a Successful Marriage” without changing so much as one word. Despite this lack of hard business focus, we...recommend this book on the strength of the intelligent exercises that the authors suggest for use in each stage of the partnering process. While Dance Lessons might be light on the numbers and factual examples that business readers have come to expect, the passion that the authors bring to the subject will leave you highly conscious of the critical, but often neglected, personal aspects of business partnerships.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic & Practical for Professional & Personal Life!.......1999-01-07

The dance metaphor quickly engages the reader. Relating the different reasons, goals, and values in a partnering relationship to a tango, waltz, line dance, twist, or swing creates great images. The illustrations on style let the reader understand: Good scenarios for partnering Guidelines for being a great partner Partnership in the context of realtionships with suppliers & vendors, other departments, and blending cultures through a merger or acquistion. The applications for this book are for all businesses who interface with other businesses or departments to better serve their customers. Dance Lesson: Six Steps to Great Partnerships in Business and Life is revolutionary. The possibilities for expanding capabilities and opportunities through partnership are rich.

    Book Description

What happens if an employer cuts wages by one cent? Much of labor economics is built on the assumption that all the workers will quit immediately. Here, Alan Manning mounts a systematic challenge to the standard model of perfect competition. Monopsony in Motion stands apart by analyzing labor markets from the real-world perspective that employers have significant market (or monopsony) power over their workers. Arguing that this power derives from frictions in the labor market that make it time-consuming and costly for workers to change jobs, Manning re-examines much of labor economics based on this alternative and equally plausible assumption.

The book addresses the theoretical implications of monopsony and presents a wealth of empirical evidence. Our understanding of the distribution of wages, unemployment, and human capital can all be improved by recognizing that employers have some monopsony power over their workers. Also considered are policy issues including the minimum wage, equal pay legislation, and caps on working hours. In a monopsonistic labor market, concludes Manning, the "free" market can no longer be sustained as an ideal and labor economists need to be more open-minded in their evaluation of labor market policies. Monopsony in Motion will represent for some a new fundamental text in the advanced study of labor economics, and for others, an invaluable alternative perspective that henceforth must be taken into account in any serious consideration of the subject.

                Book Description

The second edition of this work on family law, comprising text, cases and materials, provides not only an explication of legal principle but also explores, primarily from a feminist perspective, some of the assumptions about, and constructions of, gender, sexual orientation, class and culture that underlie the law. It examines the ideology of the family and, in particular, the role of the law in contributing to and reproducing that ideology. Structured around the themes of welfare, equality and family privacy, the book aims to offer the benefits of a textbook while also giving students a wide-ranging set of materials for classroom discussion, using the case method to demonstrate how various issues might be resolved. As well as providing a firm grounding in family law, the text sets the law in its social and historical context and encourages a critical approach by students to the subject. It provides an ideal introduction to family law for undergraduates, but will be equally helpful for postgraduate students of family law for whom it provides a challenging set of materials set within a theoretically rich set of ideas and arguments. A stimulating work which attempts to situate family law in its social, historical and political context. Its appeal should not be confined to family law students, as its commitment to a critical and analytical approach offers insights and ideas with broader significance. Mary Childs, Child and Family Law Quarterly, September 2002. 'The arguments are provocative, the analysis is stimulating and the materials amassed strongly support the authors' aim to question the 'axiomatic status of what is traditionally designated as the family'.' Fiona E Raitt, Infant and Child Development, September 2002. 'It is not often that one can say of a textbook in Law that it 'makes interesting reading' with quite the enthusiasm that can be expressed for this text. This new publication offers something that few textbooks seem to offer - a book you CAN open up virtually anywhere and find an interesting piece on almost any aspect of the broad family law spectrum.' Penny Booth, The Law Teacher, September 2002. 'All the major themes in feminist and constructionist perspectives in family law are presented together with a wealth of readings and extensive references. As a teaching manual, it is excellent - a coherent feminist perspective across the entire range of family law. 'Marty Slaughter, Feminist Legal Studies, July 2003.

However, this ground-breaking book finds that the impacts of trade liberalization and globalisation appear to have a negative impact on agricultural sustainability in developing countries.

This book explores the proposition that globalisation and trade liberalization is an international win-win game and finds that there is substantial evidence to suggest that there could be a range of agricultural problems and negative impacts on rural communities and the environment in poorer countries. The authors use cutting-edge research from Brazil, Bolivia, Burkino Faso, Indonesia, The Philippines and Thailand to suggest that special attention needs to be paid to local issues in poor countries in the face of globalisation.

Sustainable Agriculture and Environment will prove invaluable to scholars and policymakers in the areas of environmental and ecological economics.

This wide-ranging text in isotope geology/geoscience allows students to integrate material taught in various courses into a unified picture of the earth sciences. Gives a rational exposition of the principles used in the interpretation of isotopic data and shows how such interpretations apply to the solution of geological problems. Current with references up to 1985, chapters in this edition have been revised, and new chapters on Sm-Nd, Lu-Hf, Re-Os, and K-Ca decay schemes and cosmogenic radionuclides have been added. Data summaries and references have been expanded. Also includes problems for student study and abundant line drawings with explanatory captions.

5 out of 5 stars Great book. Highly recommended.......2004-12-12

This is a great book. I had never taken geochemistry until I used this book for a class on radiogenic isotopes and geochronology. Even though I was a "geochem novice," I found the text easy to read and there were enough examples to help me understand each topic fully.

The book is also a very complete and easy to use reference.

I highly recommend this book for anyone as both a text book and as a reference.

4 out of 5 stars Information that works.......2001-02-04

A great book for anyone needing information on isotopes. Well written, with enough stories of isotopes in everyday life to make the book interesting. As a textbook, it is helpful. As a reference book, it is easy to find what you are looking for. I used this book as a student in two isotope classes, and I am going to hold onto it for the rest of my career.

                                    Book Description

What is life? Has molecular biology given us a satisfactory answer to this question? And if not, why, and how to carry on from there? This book examines life not from the reductionist point of view, but rather asks the question: what are the universal properties of living systems and how can one construct from there a phenomenological theory of life that leads naturally to complex processes such as reproductive cellular systems, evolution and differentiation? The presentation has been deliberately kept fairly non-technical so as to address a broad spectrum of students and researchers from the natural sciences and informatics.

                                    Book Description

Molecular biophysics is a rapidly growing field of research that plays an important role in elucidating the mysteries of life's molecules and their assemblies, as well as the relationship between their structure and function. Introduction to Molecular Biophysics fills an existing gap in the literature on this subject by providing the reader with the modern theoretical tools needed to understand life processes from a physical viewpoint. The authors review numerous topics of relevance to biophysics, including peptide chains, DNA structure and function, cytoplasm, membranes, and motor proteins. Each chapter is richly illustrated and contains numerous examples, references, and problems that make this book useful as both an inclusive reference work and textbook.

I am a cell biologist that was looking for a comprehensive biophysics resource. The description of the book and the table of contents gave me reason to hope that this was the book I was seeking. Unfortunately, despite the book's stated aim to foster dialogue between physicists and biologists, this book assumes far too much of its readers. There is no glossary. Several terms are introduced without being defined or illustrated. Some sections are extremely short, while others spend a considerable amount of time describing examples of questionable relevance to the stated topic. That said, I did find several passages of the book stimulating and thought provoking. I very much liked the description of dead cells being "at equilibrium." This book is appropriate for graduate students and higher. I don't think this book would be very useful as a course text.

                                      Book Description

This is an introductory book on the light microscope, in the outstanding tradition of the Royal Microscopical Society. It begins with a consideration of the interactions of light with matter and the use of the stereo low-power microscope. Subsequent chapters describe the high-power compound microscope, describing both the older stand with separate lamp as well as the later research models with integral illumination and infinity-corrected optics. Other chapters cover the basic optics of the instrument, together with a description of the different types of condensers, objectives and eye pieces. The final chapter is devoted to the correct use of the microscope (so as to obtain the best possible image) and caring for the instrument. It contains a check list to help in diagnosing and curing troubles and dissatisfaction with the image, as well as a glossary and list of further reading.

                                            Book Description

This book describes the essentials of a mathematical description of the dynamics of biochemical networks. It covers both deterministic and stochastic aspects of the dynamics. After providing a brief introduction to basic molecular biology, the book describes fundamentals of chemical kinetics. The chapter on signal transduction makes contact with ideas from feedback circuit analysis and signal processing. The chapter on switches and oscillators analyses in detail biological examples, both natural and synthetic. Excitable systems are introduced and contrasted with oscillators. The last chapter deals with pattern formation and development and brings us to current questions of robustness of performance of developmental networks. The book provides brief introductions to some of the mathematical tools required in the main text and in a dedicated appendix. The emphasis, throughout, is on understanding of the essential dynamical aspects rather than just on recipes to build complex models.

                                              Book Description

This book tells the story of how inert matter can acquire self-organizing and other properties ascribed to life. The author's multidisciplinary approach does not require knowledge of chemistry, physics, or biology on the part of the reader. Part I covers the properties of matter and evolutionary criteria. Part II presents an introduction to the necessary chemical concepts. Part III explains the self-organization of biosystems and the development of organisms.
