A worthwhile read.......2002-07-22
Someone gave me this book as a gift and I really think it's clever. Andrisani can be a character, but his insights are very valid -- you *can* learn alot about someone by playing a round of golf with them. And he gives you some great ways to draw information out. Interesting and useful.

Book Description
The first edition of Investing in IPOs was hailed as "desperately needed", "long overdue", and packed with "crucial information in the new Internet investment era". Since then the dazzlingly rapid pace of IPOs hasn't slowed. And now that more individuals have access to IPOs -- through banks, discount brokers, and the Internet -- there is an even greater demand for information for the individual investor.
Tom Taulli's street-smart course on informed investing has now been revised and expanded. In this new edition, Taulli updates the Internet section to include cutting-edge new topics such as wireless, infrastructure, Linux, and business-to-business. He also explains some of the dangers of investing in 'Net IPOs, using recent examples such as Value America, Beyond.com, and theglobe.com.
In version 2.0, investors will find an expanded Web resources section that covers the latest and greatest of the new IPO Web sites. They'll learn important after-market trading strategies -- and how to play "after-market", "quiet period", "lock-ups", and intraday moves. Version 2.0 provides more extensive coverage of IPO mutual funds, and a new section looks at the most current developments of online distributions of IPOs. Taulli also sheds light on how firms distribute IPOs to investors -- and how would-be investors can boost their chances of getting in on hot new IPOs.
Customer Reviews:
Highly Recommended!.......2001-08-27
I got burned in the past -- especially with dot-com IPOs. But after reading Taulli's book, I realized that there are many things an individual investor can do. In fact, using Taulli's book this year, I've made money on the IPOs I participated in. Taulli makes everything very clear. What's more, he does not just focus on tech. He talks about the nuts and bolts of IPOs. He also covers such areas as biotech, retail (there is even mention of Krispy Kreme). This book is certainly highly recommended.

Super book.......2002-03-04
Great reference book! Gives you all the information you need to propagate--nurserymen to laymen.
A book by a pro for the professional propagator.......2002-01-23
I propagated woody plants as a sideline business for a number of years and considered this book THE source. For many species, specific concentrations for rooting hormones are specified. This is invaluable information since for many plants there is an optimal concentration and using a higher or lower concentration of reduces rooting success rates as well as root development.
Michael Dirr is the Absolute Expert in Plant Propagation.......2000-09-03
Dirr has done all the research and you reap all the rewards. His conclusions are backed up by many scientific studies by various individuals and groups. The first part gives a summary of the diferent propagation methods and the second part has very detailed data on specific species. I save hundreds of dollars each year by propagating by own southern magnolias, red tip photinas, and navel oranges. This is, by far, the best book on propagation out there!!
Woody Plant Propagation.......2000-04-19
Uncertain which manual would be best, the reviews on this book were so good that I selected it. I'd have to say it's the best all-around propagation manual I've seen for woody plants. The only problem: now I have not only detailed info on desired plant material, but also want to try SO many others!
This is the best book out there........1999-10-25
This is by far the best book out there on this subject. I have bought all the books on this subject and none can compare to this one. If you only want to buy one book on this subject this is the one.

Book Description
This lyrical primer on the spirituality of gardening reflects on the relationship between a gardener and his or her garden. Meditating upon how interaction with the earth opens the heart, schools the mind, engages the body, and embraces the soul in a world of increasing detachment from the natural realm, this book affirms a garden as a soulful space where people can take root and experience the changing seasons and the enduring cycle of renewal. Filled with the joy of living, this enchanting spiritual guide will speak to those who yearn to find the holy in the place they call home.

tilling the soil.......2007-01-16
Gunilla has a way of relating the simple, ordinary, mundane tasks of life to the profound. Her metaphor, in this case gardening, gives honor to the repetitive, unrewarding tasks which ultimately, hopefully, result in beauty and creative expression. She goes a step further by embracing the hard, disappointing and, in some cases, ugly into the landscape both of our literal gardens and of our ultimate garden: the soul.
A Mystic's, From Mystic, Mystical Garden.......2006-07-22
What an irony! A contemplative mystic, who lives in Mystic Connecticut, writes a book of prose and poetry about a year in the life of her garden. What other name could a book like this have? This is a charming little book. It probably will not catch the fancy of more pragmatic people, but then again it doesn't try to. If you are into theology, philosophy, or "how to" books, leave this one alone. If you enjoy romance and poetic thought, take time to smell the roses in this mystic garden. Some things are better enjoyed than dissected. This is one of them.
Drink of Water for the Soul.......2006-06-09
In our increasingly fast-paced, outwardly focussed culture of immediate gratification, Norris' book calms and refreshes like a drink of water for the soul. She reminds us that every visible blossom has deep and hidden roots that followed their own natural rhythms to produce the splendor that we call Spring. She calms the anxiety by reminding us that all good things take time. Her writing touches the universal heart and is as exquisite in its focus and simplicity as it is profound in depth. A must read for anyone ready to marry intention with action to create a meaningful life.
magical and poetic.......2006-06-04
Gunilla Norris is a truly gifted writer. She has a unique way of understranding the world and an equally unique way of communicating that understanding in her books. She savors everyday events and turns them into poetry. She asks us to take the time to appreciate the process of cultivating and nurturing a garden while being mindful of the kind of hard work that goes into creating its beautiful bounty. The parallel to life is clear. This book is a real treasure!
This book is wonderful.......2006-05-12
Gunilla Norris' work is wonderful. The way she writes in mystical and wonderful. She weaves spirtuality into everyday things. I love her work. She is an amazing author.

Amazon.com
This fascinating book is a valuable guide for farmers and the general public concerned about the overuse of nonnatural medicine, herbicides, and insecticides in farm management and animal husbandry. The author, Juliette de Baïracli Levy, offers detailed directions for treating all farm animals with natural methods, while stating her evidence that "mechanized" farming methods have led to the demise of domesticated animals' overall health. She asserts that poor and inadequate natural habitat, unnatural feeding practices, and a reliance on medicine to fight individual symptoms of disease without addressing the whole animal have weakened farm animals' innate disease-fighting ability. Her argument for a return to reliance on the natural and away from the synthetic and artificial rearing and feeding methods of farm animals becomes more urgent and relevant given the outbreaks of "mad cow disease" and other ailments caused by these practices. This book, used in conjunction with proper consultation with a veterinarian, can help animal owners and farmers move back to natural and healthy farming practices. --Julia King
Book Description
The pioneer of herbal veterinary medicine has again thoroughly revised, updated and expanded her book on natural and organic cures and farming methods, first published in 1952 and now a classic in its field.
Customer Reviews:
Indispensable book for natural/organic livestock raising.......2007-09-29
We raise our animals naturlaly/organically. We had been searching for a book that would help us with our animals in such a way medically, if needed. A friend of ours, who has been doing what we're doing for decades, highly recommended this book, telling us it would become our farm "bible". After reading just a few pages of this, we quickly realized what she meant, and we have been reading from it and using it ever since. It is very clearly written, easy to understand, and a joy to use. The author gives a wonderful history of herbal medicines in a farm/livestock setting. She clearly explains how to prepare the herbs (in tinctures, poultices, etc.) for the animals. She breaks it down for the different animals as well. This book is a joy to own-- we're very pleased with our purchase.
A must have for every farm.......2006-03-14
THis book is a great resource for anyone who wants to keep their animals healthy. Prevention is the best medicine, and this gives all the best prevention tips you could need. Your cattle, horses, sheep, goats, poultry and sheep dogs will thank you for purchasing this book.
This book has already paid for it'sself on my farm
If you own goats, own this book.......2003-07-31
I am a goat farmer for many years now. I have bought many books on goats, veterinary manuals, and so on, but this book is the first one I turn to for animal ailments. Natural rearing methods produce better and healthier kids than any other method. I bought one doe kid who was so ill with a disease that affected her brain that I was going to put her out of her misery--- it was too late for a vet to do any good. With the herbal treatments in this book, the goat recovered and lived over a year in good health.
Herbs are the best!.......2002-03-14
I have used this book for years and it has done wonders for my animals. It difinitely saved lives of animals the vet had given up on.The information is specific, with easy to understand instructions for preparation of herbs and what/when/why of their use.
Too much ranting.......2000-04-26
There may be some useful knowledge in here, but I was completely turned off by the author's...theories (she doesn't believe germs can cause disease, for example) and ranting against modern veterinary medicine and farming practices.

Book Description
Whether discussing habitat placement for the northern spotted owl or black-tailed prairie dog or strategies for controlling exotic pests, this book explains how capturing ecological relationships across a landscape with pragmatic optimization models can be applied to real world problems. Using linear programming, Hof and Bevers show how it is possible for the researcher to include many thousands of choice variables and many thousands of constraints and still be quite confident of being able to solve the problem in hand with widely available software. The authors' emphasis is to preserve optimality and explore how much ecosystem function can be captured, stressing the solvability of large problems such as those in real world case studies.

Book Description
This is the first volume to comprehensively take stock of what we know about the geophysical and human aspects of natural hazards, with an eye to developing an approach for managing these events. Unlike traditional texts on the topic, which utilize a hazard-by-hazard approach, the book emphasizes the physical characteristics that hazards share, such as magnitude, duration, and frequency. Chapters integrate perspectives from the physical and social sciences to identify and describe general principles that can enhance our understanding of the physical, social, technical, and economic forces inherent to extreme geophysical events. Examining the human dimension of natural hazards, the authors consider individual and community perceptions of these events and explore the effects of different attitudes on behavior and response. The work also addresses the larger picture of hazards policy, shedding light on political and economic factors and providing richly detailed examples of planning-based responses to hazards management.

The Classical Theory of Fields, Fourth Edition: Volume 2 (Course of Theoretical Physics Series)
ASIN: 0471595519 |
Book Description
The author uses a unique approach which emphasizes the field theoretic aspects of gravitation and the strong analogies between gravitation and the other areas that are studied in physics. The theory-centered text begins with the simplest experimental facts then proceeds to the corresponding differential equations, theoretical constructs such as energy, momentum and stress and several applications. End-of-chapter problems provide students with an opportunity to test their understanding, serve as an introduction to and a review of material not included in the book and can be used to develop examples, extensions and generalizations of the material presented.
Customer Reviews:
If you already own Jackson, Griffiths, and Barut, don't bother.......2006-06-02
Difficult to understand, very few examples, and the problems aren't very good at telling you what they are asking for. Maybe good if you already have a decent understanding of E&M, but this is not an appropriate text for a first graduate level class. Use Jackson for most stuff, fill in the gaps of what you missed as an undergraduate with Griffiths, and use Barut for the field theory stuff.
Classical field theory reviewed by a master........2001-12-20
Francis Low is an outstanding theoretical physicist who also happens to have an interest in education. He wrote marvellous lectures on quantum scattering, where the misteries of the so-called Sommerfeld radiation condition were clarified (and derived!) by using wave-packets. His name in science was made mainly by the epoch-making paper, with Gell-Mann, which introduced the now ubiquitous renormalization group. It is noble of him to dedicate some of his time to write his vision of electrodynamics and gravitation, as examples of classical field theory. This is an advanced book, meant to deepen and unify concepts. But Francis Low would'nt stop at that. You'll find fresh views almost at every page, mainly on the electrodynamics part, his turf. Some criticism has been made, by Robert Wald, for instance, about his treatment of gravitation, which is more or less alla Feynman, or alla Schwinger: geometry is discovered. It is not the starting point, like in Einstein. This is also welcome: it puts your mind to work along different tracks. All in all, a great reading.

Book Description
From the master of the form, Phillip Lopate, a personally selected group of essays, poems and prose that together trace the arc of his career and life.
From the man who is practically synonymous with the form of the modern personal essay comes a delightful collection of prose, poems, and never-before-published pieces that span his career as an essayist, novelist, poet, film critic, father, son, and husband.
Organized in six parts (Childhood; Youth; Early Marriage and Bachelorhood; Teaching and Work; Fiction; Politics, Religion, Movies, Books, Cities; The Style of Middle Age) Getting Personal tells two stories: the development of Lopate's career as a writer and the story of his life.
Customer Reviews:
Great collection of essays by an acclamied master.......2004-03-11
A wonderful collection of personal essays from Phillip Lopate, considered a master of the genre. Very engaging stories written in a very accessible style that belies the craft behind them.
The relating of his experience producing "Uncle Vanya" with young schoolchildren completely fascinated me. His stories regarding his family are equally engaging. An essay about a fellow teacher who commits suicide has rarely left my thoughts since I read it two weeks ago.
It seems cliched to say that the stories work on a variety of levels. However, while reading the Uncle Vanya story I found myself fascinated not only with Chekhov's play, but how we underestimate children, how we relate to children, how schools educate children, the empowering nature of theater, etc. The essay is so rich with ideas that it was literally inspiring.
I found myself unable to put the book down. As it got later and later, I would tell myself "just one more".
I'm only sorry that it took me so long to discover him. Thanks to his brother Leonard for having Phillip on his radio show. I've found a shelfmate for my Thurber and Benchley anthologies.
