Outstanding book.......2003-02-24

Clear concise reading with lots of illustrations. I can't recommend it to beginners, but if you have a working knowledge of electrical wiring, this is a must read. Contains a multitude of information that the most DIYer books leave out.

A solid textbook... but not really for DIY's.......2001-02-07

This book is useful if you just want to learn the NEC. It's a textbook, with lots of exercises and chapter reviews. I'm a do-it-your-selfer and love working on my house. I have experience as an electronics technician, so I understand basic electrical theory. I bought this book along with Electrical Code Check and Black & Decker Advanced Home Wiring to have a reference for learning some residential electrical work. I really needed something in between. This book has lots of regulations, but it's not a fun read. The explanations are pretty dry and don't illustrate the "how-to" all that well. If you are learning to be an electrician, then this might be your book. But for us plain handy-folks, we'll still need a few more trips to Home Depot for more specific advice.

Great Details of How to Actually Wire Things.......2000-11-15

The book gave me an in-depth description of how to electrically wire my house. It purposely leaves out the mechanics of pulling wire, fixing dry-wall, etc., but describes exactly how to connect wires, outlets, receptacles, three-way switches, etc. My only complaint (very small) is that answers to the chapter questions in the book are omitted.

In my county, you need to pass a homeowner's exam on the 1996 National Electric Code (NEC) with regard to residential wiring to do electrical work on your home. This book on the 1999 NEC gave me the ability to pass the exam by referencing and illustrating exact portions of the NEC manual. It really pointed out the relevant information in the NEC manual. Changes between the 1996 rules and 1999 rules used in the book were slight and since the book referred to specific NEC sections, it was very easy for me to compare the rules. Although it's great to be able to pass the exam after studying the book, it additionally describes how to use this info so that you can wire your house.

Note it took me two weeks to completely study the book at about 2.5 hours per day. It was interesting reading though because the book made use of concrete examples and explained conceptually why the various NEC rules are needed.

Hits a just-right level of depth between that of skinny hardware store "Step-by-Step" books and slogging through the code proper. Well illustrated, and lots of practical tips in addition to the code-required facts.

Kind of a textbook for residential wiring with complete references to the 1999 NEC Code every step of the way. Very helpful for DIY folks who want to tackle simple, straightforward home electrical work SAFELY and to Code. Great book!

I first read this book in elementary school, in 2nd grade. Since then, I've always made sure to read it at least once a year. It's almost become a tradition! I LOVE Roald Dahl's books, and I incorporate him in my life. For my speech team, I performed a poem from "Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator" and won 2nd place! I think every child should read this book at least once in their lifetime.

I read this book so many times in third grade that I knew it by heart! I love the way that Mr. Dahl "alerts" you to the danger of witches. After I read the book for the first time, I began to watch people for signs of being a witch, including my teacher. THIS BOOK SHOULD BE IN EVERY LIBRARY! It doesn't scare little kids because it has a happy ending, though open ended. I think I even enjoyed being scared. I went on to read the rest of Mr. Dahl's books. I'd give this one two thumb up

Disappointing.......2005-11-16

I was hoping this might integrate Mintz's insight that thinness is about the symbolic control of consumption with the diet industry. Well, it did in a way, but only by going the tired route of muddling up eating disorders and attempts to control weight, while seeing 275lb women who wanted to lose as the victims of an uncaring society, just like the 130 lb college girls who also wanted to lose. I'm starting to wonder where, if anywhere, we might find sense on this topic. Here we sit, surrounded by size 20s on one hand at size 2 models on the other. There is a genuine crisis. But I can't recommend anything I've read hitherto - except Sidney Mintz. Curious.

This is quite well-meaning and has some useful stats on the diet industry, but it's preoccupied with gender irrespective of the way men - and now also nonwhites - have been sucked into the same culture. The gender argument is better in Susan Bordo's work.

Horrible Book!!.......2005-11-01

This is the worst book I have ever read. The entire book is filled with made up statistics and made up people, giving made up quotes. The author was not subjective at all in her research and is extremely biased towards men! I think that this author had some serious self issues while writing this book! I would never recommend anyone to read this garbage! The author basically spents the entire time, telling how women always forced to starve themselves to get anywhere in this society, which is far from true! And then places the blame on men for the women that do starve themselves, and then insists that men are very subjected to the pressures of society! To prove this point tell me that last time that a male was in the medai, that has body hair on his entire body!!! DON"T READ THIS BOOK!

Let's all whine "suppression" of women.......2004-09-19

Hesser-Biber uses the subject of women and their body image to give her opinion on how "evil" capitalism is. The first four or so chapters are all about how the horrible, terrible, capitalist pigs who just want money are responsible for eating disorders, low self esteem, and everything else. The rest of the book she spent time telling stories, as though we didn't get the point all ready that people are unsatisfied with how they look.
Then she goes on and on about how women are just objects while men are looked at for their intelligence. Oh, but she ignores the fact that there are TONS of shirts out there for girls that say "Boys make great pets" and "Boys are stupid," etc., yet not ONE about girls. Not to mention the negative advertising about men (I saw one ad about a minivan- "Gets more done than your husband ever will").

Don't bother with this book. It's worthless and only got in my way of reading other books that are actually worth my time.

Excellent for beginners, not so useful for researchers.......2004-06-30

"Am I thin Enough Yet?" is a very well-written book, and I strongly recommend it to women (and men!) living in the Western World, where thinness is what defines a woman's self-worth. The author's interviews with college women are fascinating and useful in terms of showing how common subclinical levels of eating disorders are in this particular population. But if you are a therapist/scholar (e.g., eating disorders is my primary research area), or have read books on sociocultural aspects of eating disorders, this book will not add much to your knowledge.

Once you get past the rhetoric of victimization from the late 80s/early 90s feminist school, the book offers much information and insight from various studies on how an idea has been sold to us by men...and women.

A relative recommended this book to me & I found it to be very helpful. Some of the advice comes accross as common sense, but other parts fall under the "Why did I never think of this" umbrella. I found the sections that dealt with the Online photos the best, as most of mine uptil now were from my last vacation and not exclusively for an Online dating service.

The clever cartoon format makes this internet dating book irresistible! I am so visual that I could not put this book down once I started scanning the pages. Beth and Karin include clip art throughout "Finding Your Mate Online" to highlight helpful dating hints, author notes about their success stories and lessons learned and recommendations for when to catch your breath from all the dating activity. I highly recommend this quick, easy and entertaining read.

I was so resistant to on line dating - kept throwing up obstacles - hiding fear AND embarassment. Saw the authors on tv and decided to try it. It's really great. Made me face myself and my obstacles and convinced me I can control the process and focus the search. I highly recommend this book if you're even thinking about dating -- by any method!

But this book, with its very detailed strategies for determining what you really want, and how to narrow your focus toward getting it, has really inspired me.

A Great Discovery.......2006-01-31

As an experienced on line dater, this book was a great discovery. I finally got the direction and clarity I knew I was lacking but didn't know how to find. By really taking the time to fill out the "About Him" list, I discovered I haven't been honest with myself about the kind of guy I want to end up with. The detailed and probing questions made me really think about certain important issues for the first time. Prior to creating my Secret Screener questions, I had no strategy for getting information that could help me stop wasting time with someone who isn't right for me. No wonder I was getting so frustrated with the process. Reading this book and following the approach has given me a fresh start to on line dating and real hope that finding my mate is one step closer.
