Popular wisdom holds that, over time, the stock market outperforms any other method of investment, the key words being "over time"; folks who look to the stock market to get rich quickly are definitely playing with fire. Still, for those who like to live on the edge, Martin S. Fridson's book It Was a Very Good Year might offer some helpful hints for predicting a bumper year on Wall Street. Firstly, there are certainly patterns--most years in which stocks performed extraordinarily well began with extremely depressed stock prices--but never any guarantees. Fridson, an analyst and managing director at Merrill Lynch, illustrates this principle with plenty of anecdotes about those who struck it rich--and those who didn't. It Was a Very Good Year offers interesting and entertaining information about what makes the stock market tick but presents no ironclad system for making it big on Wall Street.

Book Description

What, if anything, do the most spectacular, high-performance periods of the twentieth-century stock market have in common? And most importantly: Can we predict when they will occur again?

In this fascinating investigation, acclaimed author and financial authority Martin S. Fridson probes the past, leading an exhilarating tour through each of the twentieth-century stock market's golden years. Illuminating, entertaining, and rich in historical anecdotes, Fridson's book treats us to the opinions and investment strategies of some of the most prominent and intriguing figures on the scene.

"Timely, informative, and highly readable . . . It Was a Very Good Year offers wonderful insights into the years that provided spectacular gains in the past. There are important lessons in this book for all investors."-Henry Kaufman, President, Henry Kaufman & Company, Inc.

"A useful and extremely entertaining book. It's loaded with fascinating stock market lore and helpful investment approaches. I learned a lot and thoroughly enjoyed myself along the way."-Byron R. Wien, Managing Director, Investment Strategist for U.S. Equities, Morgan Stanley Dean Witter

"Financial history with a purpose-it is a Very Good Book."-James Grant, Editor, Grant's Interest Rate Observer

"With this book, Marty Fridson joins the ranks of the must-read economic and financial historians. He is that rare combination of scholar, wit, raconteur, and man with an eye on the bottom line. Read it for amusement, education, or profit. You can't lose."-Ben Stein, writer, law professor at Pepperdine University and host of Win Ben Stein's Money

5 out of 5 stars Wish I had read it sooner.......2005-12-22

A very thoroughly researched and well written book. I wish I would have read it sooner, before the market bottomed in 2002. With the historical descriptions in the book, an investor could have spotted the conditions for a great investment opportunity.

4 out of 5 stars Those Who Don't Learn From History............2004-06-11

It Was a Very Good Year" is an interesting anthology of financial market stories. Martin Fridson elects to choose one excellent-performing year and analyze all of the personalities, factors, and influences that tugged upward and downward on the stock market in that time period. The author chooses a diverse selection of years, usually spanning a decade or so apart, but occasionally choosing two years fairly close to one another. This book reminds me of those sports books we all read as youngsters, where the author focused on one team of each decade.

The book provides fascinating history of the early market years, especially 1908 (following the Panic of 1907) and 1927-28 (The Roaring Twenties). Savvy investors like Bernard Baruch and Benjamin Graham as well as disreputable con artists are profiled. Wall Street investment pools and trusts, financial journals long gone ("The Magazine of Wall Street"), and brokerage houses long since merged are profiled and looked at periodically in different time periods. The changing histories and interplay of Ford, GM, and IBM are looked at over the decades of American economic performance.

Some interesting factoids: Did you know that adjusted for inflation, a seat on the New York Stock Exchange in 1928 sold for $6 million (prices got as high as 1/3rd that amount in 1999-2000)? That Radio Corporation of America went from $101 in 1929 to $2 1/2 in 1932? That General Motors, the dot.com of it's day, went up 150-fold from 1918-1928? That Tim Mara, original co-owner of the New York Giants football team (his brother, Wellington, still runs the team today), was on the hook for $50,000 for loans to Al Smith's 1928 presidential campaign and told the Crash-troubled bank they could "go to hell" before he'd pay it (all the co-signers had been told that a Smith victory was assured and that they'd never have to make good on the note)? That the 1958 IPO of Desilu Studios (Lucy and Desi Arnaz, "I Love Lucy," "The Untouchables," etc) was one of the most successful ever -- though Desi's hiring of Walter Winchell as the announcer on "The Untouchables" was a factor in breaking up their marriage (Winchell had once alluded to Ball's communist background and caused her lots of problems)? These and numerous other interesting financial, economic, business, cultural, and political tidbits are dispersed throughout the book and make it a very easy and fast read.

This book is not so much a financial review of select years in American history as it is a cultural, corporate, personality, and political review of the times. Fridson has a wealth of information on the major economic and financial factors of the day, but the strength of the book is his ability to intersperse lots of interesting offbeat facts, cultural references, and names from bygone eras and thus hold the reader's attention.

If you like financial markets, you'll love this book. If you like financial market history, you'll love it even more. And if you're not interested in financial markets, but just want to take a stroll down alot of Memory Lanes, you're bound to pick up some interesting knowledge from various slices of American history that will benefit you the next time you are playing Trivial Pursuit.

            Book Description

Reproductive Biology of Invertebrates Volume III Accessory Sex Glands Edited by K. G. Adiyodi Accessory Sex Glands is the third volume in the encyclopaedic series and provides very valuable information, some hitherto unpublished, on the distribution, structure, origin physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology and evolution of the accessory sex glands in different groups of invertebrates. Volumes I and II of this series (published by Wiley) have given detailed accounts of the structure, origin, composition and physiology of female and male gametes and also provided some information on the mechanisms controlling their production. The secretions of accessory sex glands are indispensable for several key aspects of gamete physiology and for successful fertilization and development in many internally fertilizing invertebrates. Interestingly enough, accessory sex gland secretions are produced, in some species at least, under the influence of gonadotrophic hormones as are the gametes themselves. The data on invertebrate accessory sex glands are scattered in various journals and have not been so far collected, critically evaluated and published in book form. This volume thus fills a void and serves as an indispensable corollary and companion to the two volumes that have already appeared on gametology in the series. Book Description

Written for an interdisciplinary readership of physicists, engineers, and chemists, this book is a practical guide to the fascinating world of solitons. These waves of large amplitude propagate over long distances without dispersing and therefore show one of the most striking aspects of nonlinearity. The author addresses students, practitioners, and researchers, approaching the subject from the standpoint of applications in optics, hydrodynamics, and electrical and chemical engineering. The book also encourages readers to perform their own experiments. Since the printing of the second edition of this book, there has been a large growth in the literature on nonlinear waves and so has the wide applicability of the subject to the physical, chemical and biological sciences. This third edition has been thoroughly revised. Some of the topics are brought up to date with pertinent references. Furthermore, the book now includes a completely new chapter on solitary waves in diffuse systems.

While sounding like the latest episode from Power Rangers, this book is actually a translation of work done in the early 90's that shared it's place in the sun. The authors use Discrete Math arguements to link Hirato's equation to Pluckers equation on transformational evolution. This basic area links self organizational theory, deterministic chaos, cubic schrodeger and Kortig deVrie into a concept almost reminiscent of Hadamards work on odd order integers in cylindrical differential equations. (Dirac's sea of holes, with Fermions and Bosons linked via a Jungian archetype to the Beatles sea of holes in the Yellow Submarine.) Seriously though this area is almost untouched although brushed up against many times,(Stokes, Kortig,Bossinesq, etc.) The concept of self similarties on infintesimal differential equations producing evolution equations shows up in many forms(check Herman Haken's works). The reviewer first became aware when plotting in Mathcad or Matlab the Bessel Airy equations and the explicit form of the deep water equation. (both indentical) with similarites showing up in 1/3's. Called solitons or n-solitons the symmetries are amazing! At first the reviewer thought they were Moire Patterns due to aliasing, but after repeated math tests, confirmed the patterns. Spectral analysis, and wavelet analysis showed their self organized similarites explicitly, both in polynomial content and best basis. Check this out using Matlab's System Identification toolbox after converting the system to theta format. (this allows conversion to state systems and characteristic equations that are part of this story).

                    4 out of 5 stars For love of money . . ........2006-04-25

The second novel in an unfinished trilogy (THE OCTOPUS was the initial volume), it's the story of how a man's ruthless business ambitions drive a wedge between himself and the love of his wife. Curtis Jadwin speculates in the Chicago wheat market; his successes propel him into wanting to "corner the market," which he proceeds to do. In the wake of all that "desire of the moth for the star," as Shelley put it, is the detritus of ruined men committing suicide, failed health, and Jadwin's own crumbling marriage due to neglect. Indeed, his wife Laura almost succumbs to the attentions of another man, Sheldon Corthell, but is brought back to her husband's side when he becomes ill. The scenes with Laura are the least successful because they are the most melodramatic. Norris felt the need, of course, to put things on an even keel again before the story's close; thus Jadwin loses all his money on a poor gamble regarding a banner wheat harvest that sends the market reeling, which brings on his illness and the loyal Laura. All's well that ends well, as the couple head West to start a new, though financially poorer, life (in 1903 it was still possible to do that). Norris is at his best in the wheeling and dealing that occurs in the Chicago exchange: the writing there is exciting and crisp. This tale of greed vs. marital love is a good one, though not as powerful as THE OCTOPUS.

4 out of 5 stars A happy ending, sort of.......2005-04-04

After reading through Norris' melodic novel McTeague, and through the novel The Octopus, Norris' Pit details the second of his "Triology of Wheat" chronicling the trade of wheat on the stock market.

The Pit, like Norris' previous novels is not without irony, we come to except that there is always a limit to how much wealth, or power someone can have, and it can never be finite. Unlike The Octopus where Norris obviously wrote himself in as the wondering poet, The Pit is perhaps his most objective novel, removing himself from the story, each character seems like it was modeled off of someone he might have known in real life.

There was very little, if any kind of tragedy in this story. Not in the same sense of a Shakespeare play or better yet, like two of Norris's previous novels.

As a novel, it has better use as a historical perspective on the trading of commodities in the stock market. Norris payed a lot of careful attention to how it works, detailing how commodity trading worked, and how people made their living by it.

Norris presents both sides of the debate, when the price of wheat shoots up, farmers wrote letters of thanks to the Wheat Czar for helping their economic situation, meanwhile bakers and the poor who could only afford bread as the cheapest source of sustanence send him hate mail.

If people are already familiar with globalism, and the idea of Durkheim and Weber, then it is a good read because this novel was written at a time when these ideas where first being fleshed out. Norris shows his understanding of this concept with tact, and finess. It is only disappointing that he died before writing The Wolf, readers can only get a faint idea as to what it is about from the preface to The Pit, and from the short story titled A Deal in Wheat.

4 out of 5 stars Anachronistic but topical.......2003-01-13

The Pit was obviously not written recently. With its dated language and pre-PC attitudes toward sex and gender roles, it portrays a simpler time. However, when it describes trading and the risks of falling in love with a position and believing that the market is "wrong", it is as topical as the internet bubble.

While reading it, I couldn't help but compare it to Arthur Hailey novels like "Wheels" or "Airport", because this is the story of an industry told through the eyes of real people with their own foibles, loves, and idiosyncrasies. Laura Jadwin, nee Dearborn, tells most of the story. Her inner conflict between self-centered materialism and desire for "perfect" love forms the backdrop to the financial saga enmeshing her husband, Curtis. All in all, this is a good read but may move too slowly for some people--except for the climax of Jadwin's corner of the wheat market, which is as fast-paced as a Clancy novel.

4 out of 5 stars Historical Novel on Chicago.......2001-09-18

The Pit is a story about the Chicago Wheat market during the early 1900's. Norris writes a historical / romance book in which Laura Dearborn finds herself in Chicago from Boston. Almost immediately, she is beset by a variety of suitors. However, she is most taken by Curtis Jadwin, a sophisticated businessman who is influential on the Chicago Board of Trade.

After marrying Laura, the conservative speculator, after making a nice profit on the wheat market, becomes obsessive over controlling it. As the story unfolds, his wealth grows in a short period of time and for a while he captures the market. Ultimately, though, the market corrects itself and he must save his fortune as well as his wife, Laura, whose love begins to flee from lack of attention from Jadwin.

I found this book very slow at the beginning. However, once the market traps Jadwin, the book becomes exciting and the pages fly by. Laura is a realistic character, although I didn't have a lot of sympathy for her - she come off rather spoiled and hapless. Norris's point about the addictiveness of speculating on wheat futures and the power that it has over the rest of the world is evident. A solid book and worth reading by those who like that period of time or are interested in Chicago's history.

                    5 out of 5 stars ooops! I went long.......1999-09-09

norris thrilled me as a junior in high school with realism. "The Pit" my recent read some 17years after highschool can only be understood by someone that has gone through trading on some level. It wasn't so much greed but lust to trade. go downtown ny or chi right now and watch the faces of the boys/men /women and this novel will transcend time for anyone.
