Customer Reviews:
A must have for every actor's library.......2005-01-16
As a talent agent, I've been lucky enough to speak with K Callan at several seminars and I've always been impressed by her concern for actors who are just starting out in the business. Her book is full of valuable information and I think every actor out there will benefit from reading it.
excellent book & resource for all career levels.......2003-06-10
okay...so maybe not ALL career levels. if you're julia roberts or deniro, i think you can pass up this book (but probably only because you're now rich enough to PAY someone to handle all this rigamarole for you, not b/c you couldn't learn anything from it). i have been an actor in nyc for the past 5 1/2 years, and when i picked up this book, i wrongly thought that it would be juvenile in tone and would offer me little that i didn't already know. not so. yes, the first few chapters deal with issues that many mid-career folks have already encountered, but the majority of the book is very informative and insightful even to hardened, old actors like myself - choosing an agent and/or manager, unions, protocol and etiquette, and my favorite, a chapter she calls 'getting a life.' she paints no pretty, glamorous picture of the biz, the info is updated and current, and it's a pleasant read. don't be a snobby actor...you've got something to learn; buy the book.
Super Book.......2003-02-26
This is a great book to guide an actor to the different aspects of chasing her/his dream. She gives advice in every possible thing an actor can face. Buy this book with your eyes closed.
I give it 5 stars despite the fact that I have a comment to the author. At the end of the book, she gives an advice that could detriment and help an actor not following this career. Because she writes that some well known actors, like Duchovny, after they reached the fame they have now, are not happy, and feel empty. I criticize her in this issue, because, she could have taken this information as an advantage to the actor, as an inspiration and not as a negative warning as she did, instead she could teach that sometimes actors chase this profession for the wrong reasons. She could have said that if an actor just want the money and fame, and is not interested also in the pleasure that acting brings, he or she will be disappointed, because once you get there, you will notice that you are the same person in the inside. She can use this information to show that the grade of frustration sometimes reached in this profession is not different from the one reached in other professions as well. I have a cousin who was in his 5th year of Medicine, and told me he was bored and tired, because he realized, medicine was not what he expected. That was 7 years ago. Today he is a radiologist, but he would rather be a full time Digital Photographer. So, there's no reason to disempower a future actor with a wrong interpretation of a fact. Because probably she will finish in another activity, that will bring even more dissatisfaction. And is well known that when we, actors, feel a little emptiness, is usually for a short time, while we recharge our batteries. On the other side, I have seen lots of other professionals, with years of frustration for not following their initial dream, but I have never seen a working actor frustrated because he wants to be a dentist or engineer.

Book Description
This is still the only book written by a working actor about the ins and outs of the business. A necessity for the beginning actor as well as the trained veteran, this popular book addresses the age-old question of how to merchandise your craft after you have learned it.
Customer Reviews:
"Quotes".......2004-04-22
4/22/04 From "Quotes" on salaries in "the field" to "quotes" from "legends"(e.g. Actor Mr. Robert DeNiro on page 12)..this "4th Edition" which I purchased on a "used book shelf" would even be worth the "new" price" listed at amazon.com for the paperback .
Very Informative.......2002-06-22
This book was easy to read...I read it from cover to cover in one evening. K Callan gives excellent and realistic advice for anyone starting out in the business, as well as how you should be thinking about your future when you are no longer a "working" actor. If you are just starting out and looking for a "fun" book to read, this is the one. The only thing I didn't like was that she focused mainly on working in New York and LA, although she does talk a bit about finding work in smaller cities. However, the information can be applied anywhere. In this book she recommends getting "Audition", so that will be my next purchase.
K Callan rules.......2002-04-24
I will never forget K's performance in Lois & Clark. She was amazing. And so is her book!!
So you wanna be a star, kid?.......2001-08-25
K Callan starts off by giving you a no-b.s. look into the way that show biz works that is so dauntingly realistic, you may have to fight the impulse to run screaming to the nearest business school, trade school or college, vowing never to dream of becoming an actor ever again. Then she proceeds to give you valuable tips, tricks of the trade and common sense strategies to help you achieve success, no matter how high the deck is stacked against you. Of course, not everybody will make it no matter how hard they try, but along with guts, talent, looks and "luck," this book will definitely give you an edge. I would've given it five stars, but it appears this edition is due for an update.
Very Informative.......2000-12-14
I found this book to be much better than its' counterpart How to be a Working Actor. It is more informative and on the money for actors starting out in the business. It also presents the information in a fun way.
Book Description
Whether you are designing a new system or troubleshooting a current one, this ingenious text offers a wealth of valuable information. The author focuses on reliability problems and the design of systems with incomplete criteria and components and provides a simple approach for estimating thermal and mechanical characteristics of electronic systems. Practical Guide to the Packaging of Electronics discusses · Packaging/enclosure design and reliability · Thermal, junction-to-case, and contact interface resistance · Direct and indirect flow system design · Fin design and fan selection · Vital elements of shock and vibration · Thermal stresses and strains in the design and analysis of mechanically reliable systems · Reliability models and system failure · The selection of engineering software to facilitate system analysis · Design parameters in an avionics electronics package Practical Guide to the Packaging of Electronics is an excellent refresher for mechanical, biomedical, electrical and electronics, manufacturing, materials, and quality and reliability engineers, and will be an invaluable text for upper-level undergraduate and graduate students in these disciplines.
Customer Reviews:
In Need of a revision!!.......2005-03-26
This book was very helpful in providing an overview of performing a first-order thermal analysis. The book is very easy to read and understand for basic understanding. Nevertheless, this book has its flaws for practical use.
Most practical texts should provide charts and tables to calculate basic losses for convection, for example. The book provides only limited information insufficient for a good first-order analysis. It forces a reader to purchase or review other books for missing information for a sufficient analysis.
Also, the equations and examples are missing units in many places. This makes it difficult to correlate to other texts for comparison or else to transfer to other units not used by the author.
Comparing to Dave Steinberg's book on Cooling Techniques for Electronic Equipment, 1st edition, the latter has a better explanation and references for forced air convection in electronic systems. I'd definitely choose the latter over this book in the future even though the latter is not as straight-forward. Steinberg provides other system setup hints with diagrams not available in this book.

Book Description
Did working hours in England increase as a result of the Industrial Revolution? Marx said so, and so did E. P. Thompson; but where was the evidence to support this belief? Literary sources are difficult to interpret, wage books are few and hardly representative, and clergymen writing about the sloth of their flock did little to validate their complaints. In this important and innovative study Hans-Joachim Voth for the first time provides rigorously analysed statistical data. He calls more than 2,800 witnesses to the bar of history to answer the question: 'what were you doing at the time of the crime?'. Using these court records, he is able to build six datasets for both rural and urban areas over the period 1750 to 1830 to reconstruct patterns of leisure and labour. Dr Voth is able to show that over this period England did indeed begin to work harder - much harder. By the 1830s, both London and the northern counties of England had experienced a considerable increase - about 20 per cent - in annual working hours. What drove the change was not longer hours per day, but the demise of 'St Monday' and a plethora of religious and political festivals.

Mozart's last opera, the simultaneously comic and serious fairy tale The Magic Flute (Die Zauberfloete), is as problematic as anything in the medium. Some deplore it for its perceived sexism and racism; some deplore it for its arguably goofy plot. "Depending on your perspective," writes David Foil in his essay in this book, it "is either the silliest opera ever written or a work of profound insight that happens to be dressed in the trappings of a cartoon." That it is Mozart's sublime music that ennobles something meant to be merely a short-lived popular entertainment is not in question.
This volume, issued by Black Dog Opera Library, puts together Foil's essay, lots of pictures, a complete libretto (with running commentary) in English and German, and a classic recording on two compact discs in one comfortably priced hardcover package. It is a fine introduction to what remains a great opera, goofy plot or no. (And Bellini's plots aren't even goofier?) It is worth buying just for the now out-of-print EMI/Angel 1972 (remastered in 1987) recording, contained on two very long-playing CDs, found inside the front and back covers of the book. The dialogue portions work better in this version than in most recordings. Anneliese Rothenberger is an appealing Pamina, and Walter Berry is a delightful Papageno. Edda Moser nails the difficult music of the Queen of Night, while Kurt Moll is our day's definitive Sarastro. Wolfgang Sawallisch, brisk and never lugubrious, conducts his soloists and the Bavarian State Opera Chorus and Orchestra with total certainty.

Customer Reviews:
Great introduction for kids!.......2007-03-08
This is a great opera introduction for kids. The story is really easy to follow and the CD is a great addition. I highly recommend this for anyone.
Mozart's The Magic Flute.......2007-02-14
This was a wonderful story well written for a young audience. We bought it for our six-year-old son who began studying violin a year ago, and this was his one-year anniversary present. Mozart's Eine Kleine Nacht Musik was his inspiration to learn the violin, and he has since taken interest in other Mozart music. The illustrations are also very beautiful.
The Definitive Magic Flute.......2005-04-12
I'm usually dismissive of most Die Zauberflotes because I find the overall quality of the singers and recording lacking. Then I came upon this recording...I have to say that it is simply the most amazing Die Zauberflote I've ever heard! The orchestrations to the singers to the conductor himself...everything is mind-blowing! I'm not a Mozart person, but if I really like a recording of his I will buy it. This is an excellent way to introduce yourself to the Flute, especially since there is such a wonderful introduction accompanying this extremely famous opera. And the Queen of the Night-Edda Moser!!! Amazing! Simply amazing! No other Queen has conveyed that much drama into her singing. This is the Flute. I would suggest Marriner's version if I hadn't seen this one, but then here is a Flute with all the greats in it! Get it now!
A great way to learn about opera, suitable for young or old........2004-04-21
I received this as a gift from a mislead but well-meaning relative. Needless to say, I have never been a fan of opera. However, I was surprised that I was actually able to enjoy this book and accompanying CD. The book begins with a brief biography of Mozart, and then offers a prose overview of the story (extremely helpful for understanding!). The second half of the book contains the libretto, or text, of the opera. The original German forms one column on the left-hand side of each page, and the English translation is printed on the right. This way one can follow along with the story while listening to the music, even if you don't know a word of German. Throughout the entire book there are pictures from different stage performances of The Magic Flute. The musical recording is of high quality, contained on two disks that fit into pockets on the inside front and back cover of the book.
This would be a wonderful book for anyone interested in learning about opera, young or old. However, I must disagree with the reviewer who said this was geared toward children between three and seven. A 3-year-old would never be able to read the text, and a 7-year-old, unless very advanced, would no doubt struggle with it. The book is better suited for slightly older children all the way up through adults of any age. While I'm still not a fan of opera, I did gain some appreciation for it from this book and CD. I'm sure the only way to truly experience an opera is to see it performed live (just listening to a recording removes the entire visual element), but I would nevertheless recommend this product.
Wonderful story-telling.......2004-03-15
P. Craig Russell's drawing style seems especially apt for stories of enchanted lands and beings. His lines are light and airy, and he sets a mood nicely with color. In other words, he is ideally suited to illustrate this story.
He does a delightful job of it, too. He amplifies all of the characters theatrically beyond the believable, and has one small advantage over true opera - he is never at the mercy of the set designers, costumers, or other effects.
I am very glad to see this classic of western culture (and the others coming soon) made available in this format. I confess, I have not fully acquired the taste for opera, or the ability to derive the story from the way it is sung. I do, however, want to know at least a bit of the story, and this is a very digestible form. Russell's drawing makes it more than digestible, it's a real confection. I also appreciate the fact that Russell has adapted the story, and not created a new one from fragments of the classic.
Opera buffs - I hope you can accept this for what it is. One way to look at this is opera appreciation on training wheels, a painless entry into part of the operatic art. It's also a way to spread some knowledge of this classic across a generation that might not have been exposed to the story otherwise - certainly a good thing.
If nothing else, it's a well-drawn comic by a very capable artist. It's that "else" that makes this comic stand out. I'm looking forward to the next Russell operas.

The History of Sexuality: An Introduction
ASIN: 1566399718 |
Book Description
In this ground-breaking and provocative book, Roy Grundmann contends that Andy Warhol's notorious 1964 underground film, Blow Job, serves as rich allegory as well as suggestive metaphor for post-war American society's relation to homosexuality. Arguing that Blow Job epitomizes the highly complex position of gay invisibility and visibility, Grundmann uses the film to explore the mechanisms that constructed pre-Stonewall white gay male identity in popular culture, high art, science, and ethnography.
Grundmann draws on discourses of art history, film theory, queer studies, and cultural studies to situate Warhol's work at the nexus of Pop art, portrait painting, avant-garde film, and mainstream cinema. His close textual analysis of the film probes into its ambiguities and the ways in which viewers respond to what is and what is not on screen. Presenting rarely reproduced Warhol art and previously unpublished Ed Wallowitch photographs along with now iconic publicity shots of James Dean, Grundmann establishes Blow Job as a consummate example of Warhol's highly insightful engagement with a broad range of representational codes of gender and sexuality.

Customer Reviews:
Fun book.......2006-11-10
I got this book just for kicks to help me explore some artistic aspects/techniques of using photoshop. It proved an informative and interesting read. Though nothing in here is incredibly groundbreaking for those who are familiar with photoshop, I still enjoyed the book and found it useful.
Not the Best Photoshop Book.......2006-09-20
This book is boring and serves as a way for the author to showcase his artsy-fartsy photoshopped images. I don't find them beautiful at all as other reviewers have mentioned. They are quite ugly to be frank. The how-to part is treacherously, butchered and sandwiched between his horrendous "ah-mmm", "spiritual" reflections/bs on his image and the how-to on creating this image. Huh? Why would I want to create something that he already done myself? This book is awful.
Excellent Resource.......2006-02-21
The Art of Photoshop is an awesome idea and reference book. Highly recommend!!
Great, "off the beaten path" Photoshop book.......2005-12-24
I have a library of Photoshop books and there are two main types- those that deal with how to use Photoshop with no identified purpose in mind (nothing wrong with that) and Photoshop books for the digital photographer which can teach you how to get rid of blemishes or a blown out sky, etc (nothing wrong here either). In many of the latter type of Photoshop books there are sections on manipulating your photos to create art, however, the end result very much maintains the basic identity of the original photo. With The Art of Photoshop we have a very rare book, a book whose goal is to inspire photoshophers to create art, as you would see in an art gallery, with the software. Even if you are not inspired with Mr. Giordan's art, he suceeds in teaching you the tools to go create your own art. Differing from other books that touch upon Photoshop art (via manipulation of your digital photo), this book's end products do not necessairily have a direct relationship with the starting photograph(s) and sources, thus the term "art". As in any art gallery, there is some "art" that Mr. Giordan has created that I don't really care for and could be made fun of such as the burning baby example given in another review. By the way, Mr. Giordan makes it clear it is not actually meant to be a burning baby. Getting back to the book. even if I did not care for some of the art created, I still found it very valuable to learn how the art was created. Although Photoshop version CS2 was not covered much at all, still, this was an aspect of Photoshop use I had not seen much about at all- the creation of art, not just manipulating my photographs with filters to give it a Van Gogh look or whatever. If you would really like to create original art with Photoshop and not just merely manipulate your photographs with filters and such, this book is really worth a look. It has taught me techniques that I can use to create artwork that is appealing to me and I think that was the goal of the book in the first place- not as a showcase for Mr. Giordan's art, but to show the capabilities Photoshop has for creating art and this book magnificently teaches how to tap into those capabilities. I agree that if you are not interested in creating art with Photoshop this is not the book for you, however, if you are, GET THIS BOOK! It is a rare type of Photoshop book.

From my experiences with art I can discern 2 types of artists. The first is a practical artist. The practical artist works on projects giving artistic touches to mundane objects that compliment the pieces and make them attractive. I pride myself as being a practical artist. I try my best to wrap functionality and use into an interesting package that works and is appealing. The second type of artist is the Emotional Artistic artist. This artist has the profound need to explain their work with a violent wind of flourished language and garble that inevitably says nothing at all. This artist is so unbelievably egotistic that they end up offending everyone around them. It almost makes you want to hug the poor misunderstood souls. This book "The Art of Photoshop" caters to the Emotional Artistic Artist and their tortured minds.
This book is 300+ pages and touches on pretty much every aspect of Photoshop, however I think the CS2 part is misleading. I didn't see one point in the book that was exclusive to Photoshop CS2. You could probably do everything in this book with an older version of Photoshop. This book is specifically geared toward the aesthetic portion of graphic design. After reading the sections over and over I'm not even sure if this book explains anything. I feel that it only explains how Daniel Giordan completed his work.
I like the layout of the book and it is quite visually appealing. There are 19 chapters with topics ranging from Distortion Filters to Working with Lighting Effects. The Lesson Plan of teaching Photoshop is simply by creating a piece of art in Photoshop, and then explaining the process of making the art. Now, that sounds like a great method to teach by, but unfortunately the practicality of such a method is completely useless in my opinion (no matter how great the lesson is). Why?Because Art is subjective and personal. You should inspire art, not teach someone how to replicate your own.
Some may argue my point since the book is named "The *Art* of Photoshop." But how often do artist say to themselves I wish I had Photoshop so I could replicate someone else's butt kicking art!!"? I don't know that answer but with this book you get to learn how to replicate Daniel Giordan's butt kicking artwork - 19 pieces total.
Here's an excerpt of the book and a preview of just what I'm talking about. -
*Chapter 15: Mastering the Distortion Filters*
While working on /Tree House/, I found myself compelled to do the unexpected and push against the anticipated next step. The image itself is a surreal juxtaposition of a house in a tree with what could easily be mistaken for a flaming baby. At first glance, this unexpected combination seems to fit in well with the melting clocks and flaming giraffes of the surrealists. The background is a jumble of tree branches that bend, twist, and almost melt as they wrap around the frame of a traditional white clapboard house. The sun breaks through the tree branches, and the entire image is steeped in a warm, soothing green. In the middle of everything is the glowing put to figure, slightly distorted and sitting uncomfortably on a branch. The lines of the figure play off the geometry created in the background, to the point that the vertical leg anchors the entire lower half of the image. /Tree House/ is a study of created and denied symmetry - which makes it slightly unsettling.
So, there is a look into this fine book about how to make a picture of a house in a tree that has a flaming baby in front of it. Awesome if you want to make a picture like that, but in most cases you won't be paid to make such a picture. However if you do have a client that needs such a picture *BUY THIS BOOK*.
Finally. I will say that this book does have great tutorials on making art. The tutorials are clear and precise and really go in depth with Photoshop's features. It does a good job of teaching about layers, effects, masking, brushes and photo adjustments like contrast, hues, curves and much more, which are very good things to learn about even if they teach you how to use them while making goofy pictures.
*In conclusion*, the $50 Dollar price tag is a little hefty to only learn how to make foofy art collages with Photoshop. There are plenty of other resources out there that are cheaper or free and give users a practical knowledge of the program and truly help artists learn about Photoshop. Art is such a individualistic action and trying to encapsulate art and photoshop together into a book is very silly and unattainable.
Buy this book only if you:
1. Want to use Photoshop to make Art
2. Are a fan of Daniel Giordan's artwork
3. Have read every other book about Photoshop and are in desperate need of yet another
Photoshop Resource.
