Book Description
Gifted education is a highly topical but controversial subject. Unlike most books on the subject of inclusion for gifted learners, this single volume presents the opposing views of first-class experts from the field to challenge the assumption that educational inclusion relates only to those pupils with learning difficulties. In this book, the authors examine the extent to which a truly inclusive context can provide a challenging environment for gifted and talented pupils.
Key issues explored include:
* the social and emotional aspects of being a gifted and talented pupil
* the pros and cons of being labelled gifted and talented in very young children
* why 'regular' classrooms are the best place to educate gifted and talented pupils
* modifying the basic school curriculum to meet the needs of gifted and talented pupils
* what is submerged talent and how can it be found?
By engaging in discussions about the nature of inclusion and how varying perspectives can lead to very different practices being implemented, the effectiveness of educating the most able pupils is examined.
As the Government has recently initiated the Excellence in Cities scheme, this thought-provoking volume will be an invaluable read to student teachers, practitioners, academics and researchers who wish to further their study in this hot topic.

"An auspicious debut. . . . Stripped of artifice and the mere effects of formal pyrotechnics, these poems move by ear and intellect, pushing and pulling at the real with precision and mystery."-Ammiel Alcalay
"Poetry reinvents itself in Plato's cave, where nothing can be seen but the mind's agile resources climbing the walls of our present, real world. Perplexed at the moment of certainty, estranged at the moment of intimacy, these poems illuminate, amuse, and provoke. Plato would have loved them."-Ann Lauterbach

The book has some good ideas, but the title is deceiving. This book is not intended to be used for designing portfolios for children in the elementary grades. Great resource for using portfolios in the upper grades and beyond.

Book Description
"A rollicking, tongue-in-cheek entree to the entomological world." —PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
In this rousing read-aloud from the creators of SATURDAY NIGHT AT THE DINOSAUR STOMP, all of insect land is abuzz with news of a big contest! The demure Damselfly Dilly — "neither clever nor frilly" — has no thoughts of winning, but she's curious to see who will. Lively verse mixes fun, fancy, and fascinating fact, while exuberant artwork virtually flies off the page.

The Bugliest Bug.......2007-05-10
This is a favorite children's book! Our kids love it and when my husband reads a book to them, this is the one he chooses.
One gripe for the illustrator.......2005-12-28
My kid loves this book. It is funny and full of lots of new "big-girl" words. The only thing we dislike is that the bugs are all drawn with four legs. Even my kid knows that bugs have six legs. The first line in the book is, "Do you have six legs? Do you wiggle or crawl?" And then we turn the page to see a bunch of four legged bugs.
An Inventive Tale About Cooperation and Individual Strengths.......2005-03-19
Why would all manner of bugs hold a talent contest? Why, to see which would be voted the "bugliest bug," of course. In Carol Diggory Shields' charming tale, children will hear about click beetles clacking, crickets singing, and ladybugs doing a tumbling routine. Children will love the way each bug shows off doing what it does best. Even a plain little bug, young Damselfly Dilly, participates - and hers proves to be the most important role of all. Because what none of the other bugs notices is that the contest judges are spiders - who invented the contest merely as a way of getting a good night's supper.
When Dilly points out that the judges are frauds, the bugs band together. Each bug, the quick-thinking Dilly declares, must do what it does best. And so the "mantises prayed," the "army ants marched," and "bombardier beetles took to the skies." When the malodorous stink bugs join the fray, it will come as no surprise to readers as to who wins the day - and who consequently wins the Bugliest Bug title. The tale is charmingly told in verse form, with bold and inventive illustrations. Written by a children's librarian and illustrated by an artist who lives on Bug Island (true!), The Bugliest Bug is sure to captivate young children.
[...]
Bug Lovers Rejoice!!.......2003-10-20
Bugs galore fill this playful fantasy. Set in the undergrowth world of insects, the bugs decide to hold a contest to determine the bugliest bug. During the contest the insects are acknowledged for their particular attributes by the judges who turn out to be arachnids in disguise. The arachnids have ensnared the bug "snacks" in their web when Dilly Damselfly comes to the rescue. Dilly reminds the bugs that the only way to save themselves is to do what they do best. "The army ants marched and the mantises prayed...Then the stink bugs united, gave off their worst smells. 'P.U., we give up!' the spiders all yelled." In the predictable, but satisfying ending, Dilly is proclaimed "the bugliest bug of us all!"
Nash's colorful, cartoonish illustrations are paired perfectly with Shields' delightful, rhyming text. The bugs have distinct personalities and characteristics which are cleverly portrayed in word and art. The illustrations virtually fly off the pages as the insects are described in humorous vignettes in which they perform their particualar talent.
The added bonus of tear-out trading cards will delight young readers. Each card features one of the book's colorful characters, with a clever anecdote and a simple scientific synopsis.
This is a great book for bug lovers of all ages, but particularly those ages 4-8.
Very fun. My 3 year old son loves it........2002-04-18
I stumbled upon this book while doing some lunchtime shopping in a kids book store in Portsmouth, NH. The owner highly recommended it. I brought it back to my office and started to read through it. My chuckling outloud caused my colleagues around me to look at me funny :)
The story of an introverted bug turned hero flows from page to page with a cadence that keeps the attention of both child and parent. There are amusing quips that make parents grin and their kids smile while wondering what's so funny ("the mantysis prayed" is a simple but amusing phrase given the context). At the same time, there's plenty of humor and excitement that the child will understand and enjoy.
Beyond the written word, the illustrations are amazingly colorful and fun. The pages have a depth to them that need to be seen to understand.
My son loves all the bugs and asks questions about nearly every one. It has quickly become a bedtime staple. Highly recommend. A welcome diversion from Bob the Builder and Arthur!

Demonic Males: Apes and the Origins of Human Violence
ASIN: 0195118219 |
Book Description
Why We Watch is the first book to offer a careful look at why we are drawn to depictions of violence and why there is so large a market for violent entertainment. This arresting collection of essays examines the presence of violent imagery not just in contemporary America but across time, from classical antiquity to the present, and not only in film and television but in a fascinating array of cultural domains, including literature, religion, fairy tales, video games, children's toys, photojournalism, and sports. Why We Watch addresses a crucial but rarely considered aspect of the media-violence problem: Why is violent imagery so prevalent? The distinguished contributors, hailing from fields such as anthropology, history, literary theory, psychology, communications, and film criticism, include Allen Guttmann, Vicki Goldberg, Maria Tatar, Joanne Cantor, J. Hoberman, Clark McCauley, Maurice Bloch, Dolf Zillmann, and the volume's editor, Jeffrey Goldstein. Together, they aim to define what is distinctive about the culture of violence. Clear, accessible, and timely, this is a book for all who are concerned with the multiple points of access to violent representation.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Work on the Classical Game.......2007-01-27
There are two excellent books, about the same size and illustration value, which focus on the Classical game, not the myriad of foreign add-ons with their complex & peculiar hands: this one, by native Chinese mathematician and scholar (translator & editor of the fine Analects of Confucius with its priceless, concise, notes) and The Book of Mah jong: An Illustrated Guide by Amy Lo. These fine books together make a superb set. Mr Li and Amy Lo cover the same traditional game from different perspective which, together, offer the reader a stereoscopic view which aids understanding. The classic game is complex enough in the motion of congenial sociality without desperate recourse to "special hands" Western variations which became popular in the 1930s with the various coffee clutch set. When buying a game set, the traditional is bone and bamboo (seek the largest size) and the attractive modern sets come in larger sizes -- Western numbers aid the beginner, but one can easily learn them if buying the Asian set with only Mandarin numerals.
Fun and informative.......2000-12-09
If you're taking up Mah Jongg and are interested in learning the traditional Chinese version, you should enjoy this quirky and charming introduction to the game.
Written in the style of a textbook, the book contains exercises at the end of each chapter. As with any textbook, the exercises range from trivial to challenging, with a few that are downright silly. For example, the exercises at the end of the introductory chapter suggest that you talk to other Mah Jongg players about their happy experiences playing Mah Jongg. Happy, happy, happy is a theme taken to comic extremes throughout the book, which strives to present Mah Jongg as a simple and pleasant game.
It largely succeeds, but stumbles somewhat when it comes to scoring, because scoring in Mah Jongg isn't really straightforward. Many tables are provided, but I really didn't find them illuminating until I took out a paper and pencil and reproduced them myself. Also, the book's value as a reference would be greatly improved if it had an index!
The great strength of this book is that Li, a mathematician, offers logical explanations for the mechanics of the game. It's easier to remember rules when they make sense! I also liked the explanations of the symbolism of the game and the section on etiquette. These lend an air of authenticity and enhance the mystique of the game. It's the balance between logic, tradition and playfulness that makes "Happy Game of Mah Jong" a neat little book.

Good overview.......2007-01-11
If you are new to building a high performance computer or want more information on the home theater applications then is the book for you. Be aware that this book does not give in depth coverage of media center software.
Good Reference Book.......2006-08-18
This book is great reference material for any HTPC newbie. It has clear directions and setup diagrams. If your not planning on using MCE, then this book will only be useful to you on the hardware side. Also, technology changes so quickly that you need to compliment this book with websites such as [...]
Meh..............2006-04-15
I had high expectations for this book but I guess I should have researched it more. As it turns out this book is really two books in one. The first describes how to build your own PC. The second describes how to use Windows MCE.
The only difference between an HTPC and a regular PC hardware is the form factor and the inclusion of a capture card. Essentially any decent book on building your own PC can help you out on the hardware side. It looks like this book did a decent job with it, even though I simply went to newegg and picked out my pieces since I had built a PC before.
What I was hoping for was coverage of all HTPC software out there today and a comparison of options. This book unfortunately only covers MCE. BeyondTV, MythTV(and Linux), Meedio and Mediaplay are all ignored. This is a huge oversite on the part of the author. Hence my 3 stars.
In summary if you are new to building a PC and intend on using MCE this is the book for you. Experienced PC builders and those that wish to use other software options should avoid it.
A must read for anyone planning on building or customizing their Home Theater PC.......2006-02-25
I uncovered this book just after I finished building my own HTPC (Media Center). In process, I did extensive online research, leveraging ExtremeTech.com, AVSforum.com, TheGreenButton.com and other resources. Finding simple answers was such a tedious task, that I decided to create my own knowldege base online at BuildMediaCenter.com to help others. If I had had this book earlier I would have saved a lot of time in finding those answers and money on buying uncompatible parts. This book is simply an enciclopedia for all Media Center technology enthusiasts and PC builders!
Build the Ultimate Home Theater PC.......2006-01-25
I purchased this book in December. I have wanted to build my own computer for some time. I never had a reason for one until I read about Microsoft's Media Center Edition. This prompted me to hit the Internet for info. I came across 5 or 6 sites with good info, but they were outdated. I came upon this book on ExtremeTech.com. The book is "hot off the presses." It give 3 great examples from start to finish, which include 3 different platforms. Each one of the components are assigned a chapter which included recommendations.
If you are able to partition a hard drive and use hand tools you will be able to build your own HTPC. The process is very rewarding. By the way I am 55 years old and this is my first computer.
