Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Insightful!.......2002-01-30

Author Jason Rich offers a functional how-to targeted at job seekers. What it lacks in originality, the book makes up for in thoroughness. Rich provides lists of "action words" for use in resumes and cover letters, a review of likely interview questions, a description of four different resume formats, an exhaustive list of self-inventory questions, and topical advice from employment experts. The writing is uninspired, but novice job hunters probably aren't looking for breathless prose. We [...] recommend this solid book to rookies just striking out into the job market, or for older job seekers who are just plain striking out.

5 out of 5 stars LIKE FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT, PEG BRACKEN STILL ACHIEVES AT 80+!.......2001-02-17

Peg Bracken (Mrs. John Ohman of Portland, Oregon), renowned author of THE I HATE TO COOK BOOK and ten other equally worthwhile published works, is now past age 80, and like Frank Lloyd Wright, still working full time at what she does best, satiric essay writing with a homespun yet bitingly witty edge. Ms. Bracken is a 1940 graduate of Ohio's famous Antioch College, one of the world's most important and individualistic higher education centers. Peg Bracken is certainly a daughter of Antioch, individualistic, outspoken, charming, and intelligent in ways disarming, yet very easy to relate to and admire.

The subject of her latest book is Old Age, and she writes about her subject in her well known humorous way in almost a journalistic style. Her writing about her personal experiences as an "Older Person" is what the American Association For Retired Persons magazine should offer, but, sadly, never does. It is relevant, poignant, and filled with important observations skillfully cradled in diplomatic and humane style, always self-deprecating and fraught with wit and humor created by a person obviously born with a gift in those areas.

Peg Bracken really covers her subject in almost all areas one could wish and does so in only 125 pages, happily presented in readable, larger than average typeface, ideal for comfortable reading and reflecting.

I read the first chapter of ON GETTING OLD FOR THE FIRST TIME in a Cockeysville, Maryland (suburban Baltimore) public library, and found myself laughing out loud so noisily that the usually tolerant librarians on duty were forced to make several visits to my reading location, and ask me to quiet down. I really did try to accommodate them, but Peg Bracken's wit is so astonishing and infectious, I finally realized that, for me, her book would only be readable in a non-public location. It's too funny for public library located consumption.

This said, it should be noted her subject matter is very serious, and the implied conclusions raised by her intelligent writing constitute the best food for thought I've ever read by any author, ancient or modern, on the subject of Old Age.

Get this book and read it. Buy it. Keep it at home, and re-read it again and again over the years. Encourage your local public library system, nursing homes, retirement communities, and booksellers to stock multiple copies at all times, and to publicize it continuously. This modest little book is a classic, and though the self-effacing Ms. Bracken would likely be the first to deny it, a true work of genious. In today's world, we need all the genious and wisdom we can get, especially on the subject of Old Age.

4 out of 5 stars It's great to hear from Peg Bracken again!.......1999-07-08

As a long-time fan of the "I Hate To...." books, I was really pleased to see a new book from Ms. Bracken! It's a little shorter than her earlier ones but her wry eye is trained on the ironies of life and her gift for just the right word is right in your face. Anyone that has read "I Didn't Come Here to Argue" or "A Window Over the Sink" should (1) reread them and (2) read this.

5 out of 5 stars Invaluable resource for a retro look!.......2006-12-31

I cannot believe I lost this on the BART train on my way to visit a makeup artist!
This booklet helped me achieve exactly the type of look with authenticity of makeup color for the time, etc. that I was looking for. For every period, there were several looks, from innocent to siren, that gave you a wide range of authentic period styles to copy for.
I am not willing to pay $250 to replace my copy at this time, but I REALLY feel a tremendous loss to not have this as a resource.
Now I know how different the youthful Audrey Hepburn's eyebrows were, say from those of Elizabeth Taylor. And when I want Audrey's eyebrows, I want hers--not Liz's. They really were quite different and GORGEOUS!

            1 out of 5 stars Turudich is a rip-off artist!.......2006-06-08

Not exactly. The people who sell her book for loads of money are. Her books are just great to flip through. If you are looking for thorough details, this is not for you. I have this book and I like it as a collector's item (not to mention cherish it for it's value. I can't believe I paid over $140 on this book!! I'm ridiculous!). If you want to copy actual make-up from the early and mid-20th century, you should buy books that are from actual make-up artists. In my opinion, She copied a lot of her stuff from Kevyn Aucoin's "Making Faces." He's a real make-up artist who covers the flapper, vamp, bombshell, etc... looks in his books (you should also check out "Face Forward" also by Kevyn Aucoin). In "Vintage Face" Turudich covers those and a few others but she basically says the same thing over and over. She just changes up the colors to use for each look. Some websites are even more helpful than this book. Another extra info, her "1940s Hairstyles" isn't even that great either. She completely copied a book that was published back in the 40s, leaving out some detailed instructions. There is nothing in her book giving credit to it. I guess what I'm trying to say is: If you want to copy the looks, this isn't the book for you. If you want to collect Turudich's books (like me) than go ahead and spend a bill or two...haha. Also, just wanted to point out: you should really be careful buying expensive books. I bought this book from a seller here and some pages are missing (the last few about where you could find vintage colors on the market)!

3 out of 5 stars A slender volume but still a nice reference.......2003-05-02

Yes, this book is not a comprehensive guide to vintage looks and cosmetics.

Yes, the photos are sadly only in black and white.

However, the classic film star photos to accompany each look are wonderful. Case in point, the evolution of Gene Tierney from the 1930s with slightly pudfy cheeks to 1940s glamour girl.

Defintely snap this one up if you can find a good quality used copy. A discounted price will help soften the blow of the covers being too close together.

An expanded, revised edition would be a most welcome addition to my personal library

            2 out of 5 stars Very Disappointed.......2002-09-16

This book has no pictures to further illustrate the points that it makes. It is all in black and white. It is basically information that you would know anyway from general makeup application. It goes through the different eras but doesn't cover in very much detail. At the back there is a recipe section for making your own makeup but it is unlikely that these would be made as some use dangerous products!!Very diasppointed with the book-lucky I bought it second hand.

            1 out of 5 stars ..........2002-07-31

What a complete waste of money. This book was much anticipated until I got it in the mail. Not only was it small, but it lacked so much detail!! The stupid thing isn't even in color! Yea, they give you a color chart, but don't show how to apply it when using make up.

If anyone still wants to buy it...I got one for sale.

5 out of 5 stars Using Corel WP12.......2007-08-25

This is a fabulous book. Just what we expect, and always receive, from the folks at QUE. It's all there, everything you might need or want to know, about WP12. When I go looking for something that I just can't quite bring to mind I almost always run across a couple or three interesting and useful things unrelated to the moment on the way. Painless education! The book is so well organized and each concept so clearly explained that it is a joy to use.

When you got WP12 you 'done good'. When you get this book you'll find that you 'done gooder'.

For anyone who has ever used WordPerfect, this book is for you. The index is comprehensive and takes you right to the section you need. No guessing. No changing of names. I have bought other books, but this is the only one I use.

Very good product. The book is very readable.

                                3 out of 5 stars A little disappointing.......2006-02-02

I always have confidence that a Que Publication will be just about the best available on a subject. However, I was disappointed that this new Special Edition Using WordPerfect 12 was printed in one color. In a book this large, using blue ink was visually very helpful in spotting main headings and sections. I actually received a response from a Que spokesperson when I emailed my comments to them, who said the cost of two-color printing was much greater than the benefit it actually provided the consumer (they did contact some consumers and WordPerfect experts for their opinions before making their decision).

A picayunish point, I readily concede.
