Practical Radio Frequency Test and Measurement: A Technician's Handbook
ASIN: 0750672811 |
Book Description
Radio Frequency Transistors: Principles and Practical Applications is a complete tool kit for successful RF circuit design. As cellular and satellite communications fields continue to expand, the need for RF circuit design grows. Radio Frequency Transistors contains a wealth of practical design information based on years of experience from authors who have worked with the leading manufacturers of RF components. The book focuses primarily on the more difficult area of high power transistor amplifier design and construction.
An entire chapter devoted solely to LDMOS high power RF transistors has been added to the new edition. A comparison is given between LDMOS FETs, TMOS FETs and bipolar transistors, showing clearly why LDMOS is the designer's choice for high power, linear amplifiers in today's rapidly expanding digital world of communications. Coverage also includes applications of LDMOS RF high power transistors in current generation cellular technologies, the design of LDMOS high power amplifiers, and comments about the latest efforts to model LDMOS RF power devices.
Other topics covered include the selection of matched high power RF transistors, input impedance matching of high power transistors, interstage matching, and capacitors and inductors at radio frequencies.
Fully updated to include the newest cutting edge technology of RF circuit design.
Contains practical, hands-on design advice to help you save time, money and resources
Written by engineers for engineers to use in the field.

first edition of a book that now is in the second edition.......2006-03-06
This book has been revised and updated in a second edition. I suggest that you either buy this book used or the second edition new depending upon your needs and finances.
This book bridges the gap between school theory and practice in RF power amplifier design and construction. This is the best book on the subject that I have seen in 40 years.
A comprehensive guide for Highpower HF Amplifier Design.......2000-04-15
This is one fine book that deals with all the thoretical, practical and thermal aspects of Highpower Broadband amplifiers using Solidstate devices. Eventhough the examples and discussions are centered mainly around the Motorola RF Transistors, the principles can be extended to semiconductor devices manufactured by any manufacturer. The authors have dealt with the subject matter in a thorough and a very easy to understand manner.I have been reading H.O.Granberg's articles in QST,RF Design and Motorola Application Notes since the early 80s as they were always packed with his tremendous experience in the field of Solidstate RF design. No matter whether you are a professional designer or an advanced radio amateur, you are sure to find it a gem in your collection of technical books.

The Best Mainstream Superhero Comic Book Ever. Period........2005-09-19
This book collects the early issues of Walt Simonson's Orion series, which depict the character's rise to the throne of Apokilips, but this is just the tip of the iceberg.
Since the series is over, it's unlikely the rest of the run will be collected in trades, and that's a shame because the next twenty issues or so were as good as comics can get, every bit as "mature and intellectual" as Sandman, but in an all-ages superhero-oriented comic! Sound impossible? I thought so too.
After usurping his father Darkseid, Orion goes on to master the Anti-Life Equation, which makes him the total master of all life. No free will can exist before him. Everyone does his bidding and is happy to do so, no matter what their previous opinion might have been. If he ordered it, you would gladly murder your whole family and be glad for the opportunity to serve.
That kind of ultimate power is a villain's dream come true, but how can a HERO handle it?
The Orion series is Lord Acton put to the test, proving that ANY use of ultimate power leads to ruin. Absolute power corrupts absolutely and the intentions of the wielder are utterly irrelevant. Whether you use absolute power to bring about the most perfect virtue or the worst sin, you are equally corrupt and equally guilty. And it will damn you.
This is what Orion learns the hard way.
Comics have never been smarter. DC Comics, please let the world read this masterpiece in collected form! When the original series was appearing monthly, I was fortunate enough to have several letters printed in the comics, which always featured well-thought opinions by Mr. Simonson. I have always been a Simonson fan, but this book convinced me that he belongs at the top of the heap of creative greats!
The Motherbox indicates that this story is good. .......2005-08-12
This book was quite good. It was shorter then I expected but it didn't make me feel ripped off. I'm a big fan of Orion and Darkseid. There is a Jimmy Olsen and side group twist to the story which I didn't expect and I haven't read any of the other Fourth World books but it was still a good read on its own right.
Better Than Kirby?.......2002-09-13
Dare I say it? Walt Simonson writes and draws Jack Kirby's characters even better than the King himself. Now don't get me wrong, I like Kirby. I wrote a very positive review of the trades that collects the first half of his original New GOds series, but this is even better! In many ways it is a sequel to Kirby's work and also follows a similar style at some points. It is, however, much faster paced, and free of some of the out of date comic book conventions that were prevelant during Kirby's time. Simonson's art is also stunning ... for the most part. Ironically, the cover of the trade is one of the book's worst pieces of art so don't let that turn you off. The other covers, collected inside, are much better. I guess they weren't used because they were not as representative of the whole story.
In this fantastic story Darkseid finally discovers the secret of the anti-life equation and goes about taking over earth. This is one of the paralels that this book has with KIrby's original New Gods, which also featured a Darkseid plot on earth. I totally disagree with one of the other reviewers who critisized the book for having a long fight scene. True, the fight scene took up a whole chapter, but it came at the end of a well written storyline. Taken on its own, it would be boring but as a whole it is a fitting climax to a well written, intellenget story.
This book also features short Tales of the New Gods, which spotlight different New GOds characters. Sometimes it character development and at other times it gives us interesting glimpses into the origins of these classic characters.
In fact, these short stories are even better than the main storyline. This is a brilliant story about ORion's birth and another about Granny Goodness's past. Guest artists on these short stories include FRank MIller, Jon Bogdanove and Klaus Janson.
Orion is awesome.......2001-04-05
...Orion is one of the most powerful and compelling characters in the DCU! What makes Orion so intriguing is his state of conflict between good and evil. Though Orion is a "hero", he's likely to treat his foes with measures as ruthless as the most heartless of evildoers. But though he is a "dark hero" he's no angst-driven crybaby. Orion is a creature of sheer will whose first impulse is to directly attack whatever threatens him. Walter Simonson has captured the spirit and character of Orion beautifully. This collection is a must have for both fans of Kirby's Fourth World and newcomers alike.
This is what comics & Science Fiction are about!.......2001-03-17
This is a magnificent piece of storytelling! Walter Simonson takes these characters and uses them like only Jack Kirby has before. Not only that but he makes you care for characters that you have never seen or liked before and then,(nah, that would be a spoiler!) Suffice it to say unlike most comics things actually change! Characters may live or maybe not! In wars people (and gods)die! Simonson realistically remembers and writes this way. At long last Darkseid is near to achieving ultimate power, as always Earth is involved. The reason is that Earth and it populace gives scale when they interact with the gods. This story surprisingly enough, requires no past knowledge of these characters. As a matter of fact no prior knowledge is a good thing in this case, as many seemed biased against these characters. At long last we have a final(?) resolution to a conflict that started in the early 70's. This is an epic adventure and one that is just beginning! This is one comic that would work better as a novel. It seems it may be much too science fiction like for many comic fans. A pity really since Kirby's characters predate Star Wars and the Luke/Vader and Orion/Darkseid parallels seem so clear! Science fiction fans should give this a chance, those who like Star Wars should enjoy this book.

I love it!.......2004-02-24
This book nearly escaped my knowledge. What I mean is, my parents were about to donate it before I had ever heard of it. Preventing them from doing so may be one the best things that has ever happened to me. I couldn't resist the book simply from the title, and the rest of the book is just as funny (whether or not it actually holds the instructions for the extinction process). As another review states, very dry humour. I once wrote a note to myself saying, "Remember: if you want to laugh out loud, read How to Become Extinct." And it's true.
Cuppy Humor for Fishermen and Nature Lovers.......2003-01-14
Very funny if you like dry humor. Had me laughing out loud. Fishing "advice" covers topics from minnows and carp to salmon and pike. Additional chapters on Reptiles, Dinosaurs, and Insects. "The Salmon have strange ideas; they are afraid of parsley and slices of lemon." "Aristotle's discovery that snakes and fish have no feet is a keen bit of observation for an ancient Greek." One can sense that Carlin and Seinfeld took some lessons from Cuppy's observational humor.

Book Description
The key founders of sexology, the "science of desire," were Havelock Ellis, Richard von Krafft-Ebing, and Magnus Hirschfeld. This volume examines the impact of their writings on English-speaking culture from the 1880s to the early 1940s. How influential a field was sexology during this period, and how much power did sexologists wield? What was the impact of their work on popular and official attitudes to sex?
Lucy Bland and Laura Doan have brought together leading historians of sex, cultural and literary critics, and scholars in gay, lesbian, and queer studies, to reassess current debates on sexology in light of its history. They address issues such as the relation of "sexual science" to the law, government policy, journalism, eugenics programs, marriage and sex manuals, and literary representation. They also map out new readings of transsexuality and bisexuality, and the centrality of race within sexology.
Sexology in Culture and its companion Sexology Uncensored will interest all those concerned with understanding modern sexual discourse in its historical context.

Customer Reviews:
The Insider's Secrets to Photoshop Elements.......2007-01-04
This is a well written book on Photoshop Elements. It engages the reader and goes well beyond basic skills and informaion. Richard Lynch is a master not only in the use of PhotoShop and it's smaller sibling, PhotoShop Elements, but he is equally skilled as a communicator and illustrator of concepts. The CD that comes with the book adds features to PhotoShop Elements which boost the usefullness of the basic software and helpful excercises that enable the user to build skills.
Highly Recommended!
A Powerful Tool for Digital Workflow and Image Enhancement.......2005-08-25
Richard Lynch has provided a remarkable add on to Adobe Photoshop Elements 3. For those familiar with Elements 3's predecessors, the suite of 60 additional tools is quite a handy dividend. But, Lynch did not stop there. Indeed, in several hundred pages of detailed tutorials, the novice jumps into swiftwater whereas the intermediate is smoothly led to advanced manipulation of digital images.
After you load CD tools, you'll find Hidden Power becomes a well-thumbed manual. Lynch approaches tutorials with a simple beginning, but quickly advances to detailed flow. His expertise as a knowledgeable Photoshop user is quite apparent. Working with tone, contrast, and color, he covers General Color Correction, Applying Levels and Curves, Specific Color Enhancement, and Altering Composition in about 200 pages.
The chapter on specific color enhancement is a doozy. Lynch prepares you to consider individual pixels where tone, contrast, and color can be adjusted. From Saturation Masking, he moves to Adjusting Color Balance, History Brush Application, then Calculations and Channel Mixing.
Working diligently through Lynch's tutorials, you become extremely familiar with both the Styles and Effects and the Layers capabilities. Some tutorials have as many as 25 individual steps to uniquely show the 'real' Photoshop path to your objective. You'll return repeatedly to see how he did this or that. But Lynch didn't stop there either. After showing you the individual step breakdown, in some unique tools, he provides you with a series of simpler steps such as those used to break out RGB component's for specific color enhancement.
Elements 3 lacks the familiar batch process operating of Actions Photoshop normally provides. This is a crucial step, since with Elements you can't record actions. Without actions, some of these techniques would simply be impractical.
After Hidden Power was released, Lynch provided actions in a white paper and downloadable capability at his web site. Unfortunately, many older Photoshop actions are not able to be transformed to Elements 3.
Lynch encourages every user to communicate with him regarding Hidden Power. He moderates an Elements 3 segment of RetouchPRO forum.
The novice must not be faint of heart or approach to learning and using Hidden Power of Photoshop Elements 3. At is roughly 10% price point equivalent, considering everyone has a sharp Photoshop learning curve, Hidden Power truly becomes a twin to Adobe's Photoshop Elements 3.
Outstanding.......2005-08-23
This book provides great information on digital color reproduction and alteration. The book has many good examples for teaching techniques for digital photographic enhancement using Elements 3. The plug-ins are great! Well worth the $$ Best book I,ve found on digital imagery and Elements 3.
Better than for Dummies.......2005-08-10
There are popular books on software titled for dummies . This book is for folks who are not dummies but really want to know how to use PhotoShop elements and don't want to go to the top and the high end. It is clearly written and the projects are easy to follow. And the hiddne power elevates the user from the canned enhancement built into elements. It make one into a very accomplished digitaler. Thanks to the Author who mabe should have called it Photoshop for sincere dilitantes.
Buyer beware.......2005-07-05
Richard Lynch, the author, states in the Introduction that "One of the most important parts of this book is the collection of Hidden Power tools provided on the CD. *** These Hidden Power tools will enable you to access additional tools for elements such as Curves or Color Balance, and they will condense some of the longer step-by-step procedures you learn in the book to clicks of the mouse. On May 31, John Wiley has acquired Sybex, the publisher of the book. Sybex apparently no longer supports The Hidden Powers CD on its website. I bought the book because of the CD. I will now buy Scott Kelby's recent book on Elements 3 and return this one. Amazon should warn its customers of this problem instead of letting them find out themselves and going to the trouble and cost of returning it.
