      Book Description

The wage arrears crisis has been one of the biggest problems facing contemporary Russia. At its peak, it has involved some $10 billion worth of unpaid wages and has affected approximately 70 percent of the workforce. Yet public protest in the country has been rather limited. The relative passivity of most Russians in the face of such desperate circumstances is a puzzle for students of both collective action and Russian politics. In Protest and the Politics of Blame, Debra Javeline shows that to understand the Russian public's reaction to wage delays, one must examine the ease or difficulty of attributing blame for the crisis.
Previous studies have tried to explain the Russian response to economic hardship by focusing on the economic, organizational, psychological, cultural, and other obstacles that prevent Russians from acting collectively. Challenging the conventional wisdom by testing these alternative explanations with data from an original nationwide survey, Javeline finds that many of the alternative explanations come up short. Instead, she focuses on the need to specify blame among the dizzying number of culprits and potential problem solvers in the crisis, including Russia's central authorities, local authorities, and enterprise managers. Javeline shows that understanding causal relationships drives human behavior and that specificity in blame attribution for a problem influences whether people address that problem through protest.
Debra Javeline is Assistant Professor of Political Science, Rice University.

3 out of 5 stars It Takes A Lot To Become A Family Man With Scruples........2006-07-02

They are all "family men" because of the baby. It all starts out that way. Lois Lane had a boy but did not marry her son's father. Instead, she lets another man be his daddy. As "Midnight Sons," a bush plane charter business brings women to Hard Luck, Alaska, things start to boom again. Chuck had planned to cruise to Alaska for this year's birthday; as a family man, he changed plans to lead a group full of two buses around the Hawaiian islands, as it would be more profitable -- and that's what "Dolly" wanted. Claiming to be the loving father of two sons ("He's the best person I know." a starfish), he inadvertently entered into the other's nasty campaign. After all he is a family man. Nothing is private with that group of family men who can get attitudes, but won't accept a woman who gets on her high horse. "You've changed your attitude and now are the good ole girl we all know and love." Love? They love only themselves and no one else.

Little Chrissie, now nine, decided that her school teacher, Bethany Ross, would be the perfect wife for her dad, Mitch Harris, and mommy for herself. Matt used the age-old, reliable male way to conquer his ex-wife, Karen. This is America's "last frontier" full of proud, stubborn men desperate for the company of women, willing to take risks, those with the courage to change their sterile lives to involve a man, any man. They are recruited to move near the Arctic Circle to work at the Hard Luck Cafe, to entertain the male-dominated small population. Friendship is different from all other relationships. Unlike acquaintanceship, it is based on love ...free of jealousy, knows neither criticism nor resentment, and is freely entered into, freely given, freely exercised. Friendship is human. Perfect friendship is rarely achieved, however, with some disagreements inevitably occurring, at the most inopportune times. Some seek more than friendship, intent on becoming family men with power over those they choose and others.

5 out of 5 stars A great addition to Midnight Sons!.......2006-02-27

I enjoyed this and all volumes of the "Midnight Sons" series.

      4 out of 5 stars delightful.......2003-10-17

Every now and then I feel the need to read a romance that is easy and fun to read. Macomber has written two books in one that is a double treat. They both are centered in Alaska so that one gets the additional gift of learning a little about that state. The first is about Bethany Ross who is the new teacher and Mitch Harris who is the law among other things in the town of Hard Luck, Alaska. Mitch is drawn to Bethany but fights his attraction because of the death of his first wife and he figures it won't be long before her bags are packed and she is heading for greener pastures. Bethany has come to teach, but her main objective is to find and learn what she can about a man called Ben. She isn't planning on leaving for a while, and of course she is drawn to Mitch but can't figure him out. She feels he is as attracted to her as she is to him but he acts the opposite-and then there is his daughter who tries to be matchmaker. The second story is about Matt and Karen who are now divorced. Karen grew up with a father who couldn't keep a job and the financial insecurity that resulted. Matt had begun to do the same thing and she decided she couldn't deal with it so she left him and divorced him. Matt buys and old lodge that needed fixing up and put everything into it, but he still loves Karen and she still loves him. His sister, who Karen has remained friends with, is getting married and wants Karen to be in her wedding. After getting Matt's okay that it won't bother him if Karen is in the wedding, her plans evolve. You guessed it, Matt and Karen have a one nighter and then Karen leaves. Karen finds out she is pregnant and because the pregnancy is making her ill she agrees to stay at Matt's lodge until after the baby is born, in seperate bedrooms, of course. The rest you will have to find out for yourself. If you want a nice relaxing evening reading a fun but not to strenuous book, this is right up your alley. I enjoyed the book.

      2 out of 5 stars midnight sons 1 2 3.......2001-09-24

I have read all 3 books and was glad I had all in hand before reading, I thought the outcomes were very predictable, I was disapointed that there was not more substance to the characters. If I had not had all 3 it would have been hard to follow. Hard Luck, Alaska was a great setting for these books, life is hard and time moves slowly when far removed from cities and family

4 out of 5 stars A realistic look at romance in Alaska.......2001-08-19

It is obvious from the start that Ms. Macomber has done her homework as far as Alaska is concerned. She has the perfect mix of characters in the small Alaska town of Hard Luck and just the right number of inconveniences that one would encounter living above the Artic Circle.

The first short story about Mitch and Bethany is truly heartwarming. Equally sweet is the happy ending Bethany finds to another part of her life. That section of the book was hard to put down.

The second story about Matt and Karen was good, but the constant bickering and on and offs of their relationship got to the point of belaboring the issue. I think that with one or two of their arguments omitted, it would still would have worked. It got to the point in 'Because of the Baby', that I kept reading because I felt obligated to finish the book. Maybe looking for some redeeming quality.

Overall, I have to say that the book is great for some nice, light reading. They are stories with warm and sincere charcters. I have bought several more of her books, because they are well written and tasteful. And even if Matt and Karen went at each other at bit too much for me, Ms. Macomber is an author will worth following.

I am very much enjoying this series by Debbie Macomber. The people of Hard Luck seem to be genuine and loving. A place where community is vital to the well being of all those that live in it. The people show genuine concern for one another and are always willing to lend a helping hand.

Mitch has buried such deep hurts withing his heart and is trying his best to not fall in love with the lovely new school teacher.

Bethany has her own past haunting her and she is struggling with her new feelings for Mitch and the reason that she has come to Hard luck in the first place.

                      Book Description

Combining the impact of the classic bestseller Silent Spring with Fast Food Nation, The Hundred-Year Lie presents a devastating exposé of how chemicals in everyday products are ruining our health.

Over the past one hundred years, we have been guinea pigs in a vast chemistry experiment that uses our bodies, our health, and our good will to test the proposition that modern science can improve upon nature.

In The Hundred-Year Lie, investigative journalist RandallFitzgerald shatters dozens of myths being perpetuated by the chemical, pharmaceutical and processed food industries.

Find out why you would never be FDA-approved—and why humans are becoming one of the most polluted species on the planet:
                      • The average American now carries a “body burden” of 700 or more synthetic chemicals, including Teflon, plastics, and dozens of pesticides.
                      • Musk fragrances used in detergents and air fresheners are not filtered out by our current water treatment facilities, ending up in our drinking water.
                      • The artificial sweetener aspartame, an ingredient in 1,200 food products from diet drinks to chewing gum, has been linked to eighty-eight toxic symptoms.

Fitzgerald not only sheds light on the problems we face from the unprecedented chemical onslaught, he presents suggestions for what we can to do to turn the tide.

5 out of 5 stars Well researched truth that may save your 200+ toxin saturated life!.......2007-09-02

As an engineer that lives and dies through a working knowledge of cause and effect, I have impatiently read through many books crying of our toxic environment with only bits and pieces of truth and the rest filled in with passionate fluff. This book, however, is well researched, using primarily professional medical and federal study information to show us the increasingly hopeless degree of the problem, a beautiful timeline showing/inferring a whole host of cause and effect issues, as well as a better path to prepare us for healthier living. As a result of this book, I researched several detox programs, setting on DrNatura's Detox Diet. After just 30 days on the colon cleanse/detox I had my eyeglass restrictions lifted from my license (which I've had for 20+ yrs). A more amplified section on how to find out your toxicity as well as your vitamin and mineral balance would really make this an excellent book. Still, I gave it a 5, since it is the best of the 7 books I've read on the subject of profiteering homicide by the chemical and processed food giants of the west.

WOW, what an eye-opener! All these years I've been thinking the FDA was out to protect me, only to find they are really responding to pressure from big business and special interests. And the job I thought they were doing is NOT BEING DONE AT ALL! If you care about your health and would like to know where the health-threats are coming from, READ THIS, it will scare you to death! But it will also give you information to help you stay away from the worst risks.
TO THE AUTHOR......THANK YOU RANDALL FITZGERALD!

5 out of 5 stars A sobering look at the dire consequences of the highly toxic world we have created in just the past century. .......2007-04-02

Just over a century ago, the Congress passed the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906. According to author Randall Fitzgerald it was this legislation that reassured the American public that the food and medicines they were consuming had been thoroughly tested and were safe to use. As it turns out nothing could be further from the truth! "The Hundred Year Lie" tells the sordid story of a century of deception and irresponsibility by the companies who process our food and manufacture the drugs and chemicals we use everyday. Indeed, the promise of "a better life through chemistry" is a notion we all need to examine and seriously reconsider.
At a bare minimum, reading "The One Hundred Year Lie" will make you stop in your tracks and think about all of the different chemicals you are ingesting and coming into contact with every day. It is not just the voluminous amounts of additives in your food that you must worry about. Stop and consider all of the personal care products you use on a daily basis. Add to that the over-the-counter and prescription drugs you may be taking and all of the household cleaning products that you employ. Then think about all of the chemicals that are applied to our clothing, our bedding and to our furniture. Next, you might want to consider the flouride in your municipal water supply and maybe the highly toxic arsenic in all of that pressure treated lumber around your property. Now if you are a pretty unscientific sort like me you will then appreciate Randall Fitzgerald's attempt to explain the concept of "synergy". Most people just take it for granted that the products they use must have been thoroughly tested and deemed completely safe to use. It is when you discover that the scientific community, the manufacturers themselves and various government regulators really have absolutely no idea how these different chemical concoctions are going react with each other in the real world that you just might become a bit concerned. On many different levels "The Hundred Year Lie" challenges the way we live our lives today and implores each of us as individuals and society in general to make the necessary changes before more damage is done. I simply cannot imagine that anyone who reads this book will not feel compelled to make some significant changes in his or her own lifestyle. In our never-ending quest for comfort and convenience we have done considerable damage to our our own personal well-being and to our environment. Some say the damage may be irreparable. This is a fascinating and well written book that is certainly worth your time and attention.
                      Highly recommended!

This is a great book that details all the harmful substances you should be aware of in your daily life. The only thing could possibly be added is information on how to protect yourself from these dangers. But that would be another book entirely, and there are a few out there like The Recipe for Living Without Disease, by Dr. Vonderplanitz that serve that purpose.

5 out of 5 stars Puzzle positions to improve attacking skills.......2006-02-25

This is not a teaching manual, as one might think by reading the title, but yet another in the long line of chess puzzle books that have appeared in recent years. To be fair, it does say on the cover that the book contains "250 puzzle positions to train your kinghunting skills", so you are left in no doubt as to the nature of the book.

The author has grouped the positions under six thematic headings, each comprising one chapter. The chapter headings are self-explanatory - Attacking the King Caught in the Centre, Attacking the Castled King, Strike in the Centre etc. Each chapter begins with a short explanation of the kind of ideas to look for in the puzzles, but it is the puzzles themselves that form the bulk of the book. Each position is accompanied by a brief description of the essentials of the position, and it is up to the reader to use his/her skill and imagination to find the winning continuation. Solutions are found at the end of each chapter.

I like books of this genre because they act as a constant reminder to me in my own games that if you look long and hard enough even the most innocuous positions often contain the seeds of a winning combination. It is just a pity that other people's games contain far more fertile seeds than my own!

I read a lot on SQL Forum about this book. I am new to SQL Server 2000. So i took a chance to buy and put some of my energy into it. I am still in process of reading this book. But what i have learnt upto this point is really a big help in understanding what is SQL Server 2000 and its administration capabilities.

I bought this book upcoming becoming a SQL Server DBA. I had three years programming experience which included T-SQL, however, NO DBA experience! It provided excellent explanations of DBA tasks, especially the all important database backups and restorations. I did not require any other book resources. I highly recommend it for those entering the DBA field.

Side note: I only used this book for industry experience and have not used it towards an attempt at MCDBA certification. I have since read the MCSE SQL Server 2000 Administration Guide for Dummies and found the SQL Server 2000 DBA Survival Guide to provide more detail on certain subjects.

I bought this book as a companion to my exam prep reading for Microsoft's SQL Admin exam. I only had 6 months of working with SQL2K when I started to read and study. This book gave great clarification on otherwise vague material. The detail was easy to understand on all levels. I have now been working with SQL 2K for 2 years and still go to my survival guide for reference daily. Also- it's on it's 2nd edition- How many tech books last long enough to go to a 2nd edition?!
