5 out of 5 stars Cool! Everything but the kitchen sink.......1998-09-09

Mindblowing! There's so much here it's hard to know where to begin. Suffice it to say that this book provides full information about all the places and ways to find jobs with nonprofits and in education. It's easy to use and actually fun (the cartoons are great!). You could spend hours with it -- but the best thing is, it helped me and several friends find jobs really quickly. Thanks.

            but not much.

At least it is all in one place. Other than that it's way over priced. It's like one of those SAMS "unleashed" books that are just a reprint of the mfg's documentation.

I could recommend it it if it was $35 bit not $140.

            1 out of 5 stars Really disappointing.......2003-05-04

Just like reading the SLC 500 Instruction Set Reference available from Allen Bradley. Just added a few information about PLCs which by the way anyone can find in the internet for free. Don't waste your money on this book.

            1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2003-04-25

For the expense involved in buying this book I was expecting a lot more. At best the book is a concise summary of a limited subset of SLC and Controllogix instructions. It does very little to enhance the documentation provided by Rockwell.

            Book Description

"Why have so many less-skilled workers had such a hard time finding and keeping jobs during the economic boom of the 1980s and 1990s? Timothy Bartik documents that a key reason is our failure to adopt labor demand policies focused on the least-skilled workers who have been left behind in our rapidly changing economy. Jobs for the Poor provides a comprehensive review of what we have learned from thirty years of employment and training programs. Academics, policymakers, and students all can learn much about what has worked and what has not in our struggle to achieve full employment. Bartik advocates subsidizing employers to hire the disadvantaged and convinces us that labor supply policies alone will not do the job." --Sheldon Danziger, Henry J. Myer Collegiate Professor of Social Work and Public Policy, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor

Review excerpts from Summer 2003 issue of Journal of Policy Analysis and Management, review by Gregary Acs and Katherin Ross Phillips

"In addition to laying out fairly detailed policy recommendations supported by new analytic work, the book provides a comprehensive review of the history of labor demand and supply policy in the United States. For that reason alone, Jobs for the Poor is a welcome addition to the libraries of researchers and analysts alike. With the technical discussion relegated to 12 appendices, the book is accessible to a broad audience and would be appropriate for advanced undergraduate and graduate classes on poverty and labor economics."

Thank goodness someone in an economic think tank is really trying to work out how to help the poor. For the poor to pull themselves up by their bootstraps may seem reasonable to one whose father had a "silver foot in his mouth" or to those worthy legislators who have voted themselves very hefty pensions for life. It isn't easy to solve the problem of the poor getting poorer, but surely we should make the effort to try and do it right. This book takes a serious look at what works and what doesn't. Hopefully, those making public policy will at least read this book and just maybe learn something from it. An Old Curmudgeon

                Book Description

Rochelle Wright provides the first historical overview and analysis of the manner in which Jews and other ethnic outsiders have been depicted in Swedish film from 1930 to the present.

Focusing on films produced in Sweden for primarily Swedish audiences, Wright analyzes how the portrayal of the relatively small Jewish minority has evolved over the years. She compares the images of Jews in Swedish film with those of other ethnic subcultures: long-term resident communities such as tattare (‘travelers’, an indigenous pariah group often confused with gypsies), Finns, the Sami, and recent immigrant populations such as Greeks, Italians, Turks, and Yugoslavians.

Wright’s cross-disciplinary approach to interrelated issues of ethnicity and national identity enables her to take advantage of the methodologies of historians and sociologists as well as those of literary and film critics. She bases her study on a detailed analysis of the films, but, by way of comparison, she examines filmscripts and literary sources. She also consults contemporary reviews, interviews with actors and directors, and biographies and memoirs as well as critical discussion among film historians.

Wright confronts important—and exceedingly difficult—social questions. She deals head-on with xenophobia, anti-Semitism, immigration, assimilation, ethnicity, multiculturalism, and the national self-image of Swedes as reflected in their cinema. She also analyzes the manner in which Swedish film represents the persecution of Jews in Nazi-dominated Europe.

                    Book Description

Colorful paper dolls that sold everything from coffee to cathartics, from tea to thread, from cocoa to corsets. These dolls were the playthings of generations of children from the 1890s to the First World War. These wonderful examples of advertising art include fanciful characters from the imagination of artists like Palmer Cox. Dolls dressed in the national costumes of the many immigrants to the United States had a special appeal to everyone. Dolls depicting characters from favorite nursery rhymes and folk tales were issued by many advertisers; these dolls filled the playtime hours of many. Dolls appealing to our patriotism take on the form of Uncle Sam, soldiers, and sailors. Dolls also appeared as Americans at work and play. Human characteristics were even ascribed to animals of all kinds to give children an opportunity to dress them up in colorful costumes. It is difficult to find a segment of society not represented by a paper doll! Whether you're a collector or someone simply interested in the charm and culture of turn-of-the-century America, this book is sure to make a good addition to your library.

5 out of 5 stars Get an asp.net site up ASAP.......2006-07-28

I'm experienced in HTML, SQL, VBScript, VBA, etc. but I've never really had to create something with a 'real' user interface. I've done lots of quick and dirty data fixes when something bad would happen with payroll or billing or whatever. I put up a personal webpage with pics of my friends and family, yada, yada, yada.... Anyways this book helped me take all that disparate knowledge and apply it to a real user interface. The book has lots of examples and Web Matrix is a good place for a beginner to start, Visual Studio is overwhelming.

The hardest part of all is deploying your website. The author explains how to host your own website which I was not even going to try to attempt but it is helpful to understand the process. He gives a brief overview of deploying to a remote server which is all anyone could ever do, each hosting service is different. Choose your service carefully, ask friends, co-workers, people who have already done it. Not all hosting services are equal. Turns out the service I was using that claimed to support asp.net only sort of did. Lot's of sweat and tears to finally get them to tell me that. Soooo get this book, do the examples and then for practice use aspSpider.net to deploy your site. It's free for people like me who just need the practice. They have a forum that was very helpful to me.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book !!!.......2005-09-16

I rarely give reviews to books (much less five-star reviews), namely because I am not easily impressed. THIS book is one of those rare gems - especially in the computer industry - that appears to have been well-written and proof-read.

I have actually walked through this book, followed the instructions, and produced the desired result. I have learned a great deal in doing so, and I don't feel like the author assumed too little (or too much) was in my noggin to start with.

I also found the book to be quite informative during periods when I was without-computer (such as train commutes or potty breaks).

THUNDEROUS APPLAUSE for Mike Pope. May his tribe (and future book projects) increase!

4 out of 5 stars plenty of examples.......2005-08-02

This book is certainly useful for any students attempting a project on ASP.NET coz it provides many examples. It's very handy when I used it for my teaching too.

I just have this book for 4 days ago and now I already completed the first 4 chapters. The books is well written and easy to be understand with a good example. The person who plan to read this book shoud have some knowledge relate to HTML and Visual basic (6.0 or .Net is preffered). All of the sample project and example in this books is prepare in VB.NET. If you are working with C#.Net and plan to build a dynamic website, don't buy this book. Finally, I recommend this book who plan to build a dynamic website from the first step.
