Sage Advise for Workplace Challenges.......2005-07-19

This is a wonderful little manual with Sage Advise for savvy in dealing with the frustrating world of Sharks, Office Politics, Ad Infintum. It's a must have - written with the Goddess Within Womyn in Mind but for Men too. A quick four coin toss times four equals shrewd strateties for success. If you want to be bit less obvious and need quick advise, just open the book any which way. Chances are that you will find just the insight that you need for dealing with the given situation that you are dealing with. Personally, I like one of these books at home, in the office, in the car, ad infinitum.

Great Gift Under $10!.......2002-12-08

This is what you want to get as an office party gift when you need to find something for under $10. The office Oracle: Wisdom at Work by Patricia Monaghan, is a timeless and affordable gift. It truly is timeless, because unlike other calendar-type books of wisdom, this one has no year or specific day information attached to it. You can thumb through it anytime at random and choose your "thought for the day." It's not just a fluff book of optimism, but a guide with 200 short pieces of office wisdom. Patricia Monaghan takes a "survival of the fittest" approach to keeping peace and happiness every day at our jobs. We often get attacked, ridiculed, and under-appreciated. One page of wisdom states "No One Knows What You Really Do." Then it goes on to explain how it is no good to be angry when you realize this, reminds you to hide your deficiencies and illuminate your success, and the bottom line is that it's up to you to decide what others should know of you. Each statement in The Office Oracle is a thought worth reflecting on, and they are great ideas to keep us balanced in the workplace.

Too complicated.......2007-02-13

ETFs are the latest fad in atempting to beat the market. The author's verbose explanations about how to do this left me thinking that I'd be better off in an index fund than trying to outsmart an almost efficient market in this manner. I doubt that the subtitle "A new approach to outperforming the market" is accurate. Those who want to use ETFs should stick with mainstream ones like DIA, SPY, IWM. Trying to pick the "hot sectors" with ETFs is playing the "loser's game," and is what many underperforming money managers have been doing for decades.

As Vincent Catalano explains so eloquently, exchange-traded funds (ETFs) make it easy for investors to create their own effective portfolios. Because ETFs often (but not always) have low fees, with a little bit of research, investors may be better off creating their own portfolio of portfolios than relying on expensive money managers.

The book is most beneficial to non-professionals who have a working knowledge of investments. However, professional investors can also benefit from the insights found on these pages. In particular, this book is a wake-up call to those who make their living managing other peoples' money.

Sectors and Styles.......2006-09-12

I have read many investment books and this is one of my favorites. Vincent, presents a "big picture" approach to investing with style and sector asset allocation using ETF's. The book was presented in an easy to read fashion and clearly communicates how the pros invest by underweighting and overweighting the major S&P Sectors. This is a must read for anyone who wants to invest like the Pros.

This book is an excellent guide to building and managing an investment portfolio. It doesn't promise that you'll make millions. . . but it does provide the principles and strategies you need to create an investment portfolio for long-term growth. It's intelligent, easy to understand, and practical.

The realities of science; Popperian pragmaticism!!.......2003-04-20

The world is as it appears to be through our senses - Every event has an explanation - That explanation is intelligible - There are absolute realities and it is these that science "gets back of". These are some of the assumptions of science. The question of course is how many of them can really be answered apart from specuation.

Nicholas Rescher, in a clearly written, tersly laid out, and cogent book ventures into some of these questions and ventures answers grounded in Peircean (Popperian?) pragmatism. The reason we believe the above presumptions - and presumptions is what they are - is that they enable us to do science at all. Tautology, you say? How can Rescher claim that doing science is why we make these assumptions if these assumptions are (at least partially) necessary to do science? In the tradition of pragmatists Charles S. Peirce and John Dewey, we do science to gain increased control over our environment (even if that control is just more security of knowledge) and it is that end which causes us to make assumptions like these that help us in our pursuit.

Rescher demonstrates, as far as metaphysics will allow, that it is pretty well certain that some of the above assumptions are false. There's no reason, for instance, to suppose that ultimate truths exist; that is to say, that even though we can state facts and seemingly true theories about x, spaitally, x is likely able to divide into smaller units and they into smaller units ad infinitum. Thus, search for scientific knowledge must (will?) be a never ending one. Similarly, scientific realism which asserts that scientific theories describe things as they "really are" is questionable. Our view of the world changes with time; it always has. None of this is to suggest that there is no true reality or that science can get no closer by degrees of describing the world; just that the end goal will always be an end goal.

Rescher's view is of a realistic pragmatism; science is judged by utility. We use our theories because they work, they help us predict, and becasue of this they are the truest we have. Far from the "vulgar pragmatism" of Rorty or Fish which, to a degree, disavows reason as just another way of knowing, Rescher's view of science makes reason that much more important. As fallible, limited beings, it seems the best tool we have.

My only complaint is that for those familiar with these issues, this book may come off as repetitive. Indeed, about half way through, I found myself guessing, rightly, what the author would say next. All in all, a fairly easy, yet very enlighening read. In addition, I would also reccoment Popper's "Conjectures and Refutations" and Susan Haack's "Manifesto of a Passionate Moderate".

This book is an officially authorized advisory manual that implements the recommendations on the energy and protein requirements of cattle, sheep and goat made by the AFRC Technical Committee on Responses to Nutrients (TCORN) since its establishment in 1982. TCORN has produced a series of numbered reports including No. 5 in 1990 on 'Nutrient Requirements of Ruminant Animals: Energy' and in 1992, No. 9 'Nutrient Requirements of Ruminant Animals: Protein.' The former recommended, with only minor modifications, the adoption of the AFRC's 1980 Technical Review's full recommendations on the energy requirements of ruminants, while the latter recommended the adoption of a protein system based on Metabolisable Protein as the unit. Opportunity has been taken to include material from TCORN Report No. 8, 1991 on the 'Voluntary Intake of Silage by Cattle' and from an unpublished TCORN Report on the 'Nutrition of Goats.' The current volume presents these recommendations in a practical form designed for use by advisors, farmers, lecturers, research workers and students concerned with the nutrition of ruminant animals. The manual includes 45 tables of requirements (incorporating agreed safety margins) and 29 worked example diets.

This is not a lite reading book. It is however and excellent reference book one that I highly recommend for anyone's library interested in GIS, remote sensing and their applications - It covers the use of these relatively new tools within various scientific discliplnes, very useful and still up to date formulas, tables and charts and references for further investigation. Very technical and very applicable. Not recommended for everyone.
