Book Description

If you assumed that petite LuAn Mitchell-Halter is a beauty queen, you'd be right. She's also been a meat packer, Canada's #1 Female Entrepreneur, flat broke, a multi-millionaire, and survived the loss of her husband-all before turning forty. Image isn't everything. LuAn Mitchell-Halter has been fortunate to be able to cut through the public's image of her as a "paper doll"-someone who is only defined by the clothes she wears-and release the core of her being. She has now chosen who she is and what she decides to wear on life's journey based on her experience, instinct, and wisdom. In Paper Doll, for the first time, Canada's leading businesswoman andphilanthropist shares her story. LuAn tells what happened behind the scenes of her public life and offers sage advice to readers about breaking the barriers that others can build around you. LuAn's simple principles will teach you how to look for the answers within yourself to achieve personal success, regardless if others think you are sure to fail. She has learned that it's usually the fear of losing it all-money, pride, and stature-that can stop us from believing in ourselves, but the only genuine loss is when we fail to be authentic to our true selves.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I Am Changed.......2005-11-03

I am bothered greatly by a review I read from a "Krystal". LuAn is a person who will, and has extended herself immensely to help and assist. She has accomplished great things, and I know that when her husband Fred Mitchell passed away she was left with a mega turnaround that was necessary in a company that was struggling...yes her husband's grandfather started the company and her late husband ran the operation as is brought forward in Paper Doll, however things happened where the company suffered and needed mending...LuAn did just this in a huge way, mainly to keep a place of employment going because her heart could not bear to see a company go down and many employees lose their jobs. Many of my friends have been greatly helped by reading Paper Doll, male and female. It is unfortunate that one person is so on the wrong track, she should read Paper Doll again, slowly.

1 out of 5 stars PASS THE EGO PLEASE.......2005-10-31

I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the 14 self serving images of this person Luan who wants us to believe that she is so spiritual. These are the actions of an ego driven person consumed with who they think they are. Luan...your words and actions don't match. The book smacked of a lot of events that don't really add up. Luan's deceased husband was known as a really great man who wouldn't be touting himself. He built the company in the first place...she didn't. I think the book makes too much of her alleged contributions to what was totally the work of Fred Mitchell and his grandfather.

5 out of 5 stars even students are helped!.......2004-08-19

I am in grade 8 and I must say I dont get alot of attenchen with the other kids. I am kinda a nerd. because while all the other kids are going to a movie or they are at a volly ball meet. It helped me to accsept that I am diffrent and that thats Ok. luan seems to be a very exstrodenary woman and to have achieved so many greet things in this life. that I can and anyone can too. even if we get off track sometimes. its Ok if others are the way they are and Ia m the way I am!

5 out of 5 stars She has allowed me to soar.......2004-08-18

I saw LuAn on the Cover of Macleans magazine... and read her story...

I have similar dilemas, this book was my reading "bible" of sorts...on a flight home... I found passages that hit right where I needed it.... and softened the blow where I wanted it...

LuAn, I was visiting my cousin in Ontario, and whining.. my workplace was getting to me, and my homelife was overwhelming at times.

she introduced me to your book...
This book helped me a lot. I will refer to it often.

Thanks...

5 out of 5 stars a great read!.......2004-05-12

Although PAPER DOLL is a memoir, it is also a teaching book. Divided into 11 chapters with titles such as: Listen to Your Instincts; Surround Yourself with People Who Inspire You; Define Your Dream; No Dream is Achieved Alone; Protect Your Power, etc., LuAn Mitchell-Halter quotes the newspaper headlines that tell her story, & spices the text with sidebars & planning agendas.

Certainly LuAn Mitchell-Halter has made a name for herself, from the one the girls at her school gave her, to her salad days as a beauty queen who spoke about women using their minds, to her days as a journalist & TV talk show host, & then to marrying one of the wealthiest, most eligible Canadian bachelors. After ten exciting & loving years, Fred suddenly dies during a routine medical checkup, & LuAn is left holding the ropes to a declining business & a hostile takeover bid...& turns that into a multi-million dollar partnership!

PAPER DOLL tells of not only how LuAn Mitchell-Halter survived the "slings & arrows" cast her way, it lets us into the secrets of her success.

Rebeccasreads highly recommends PAPER DOLL for the vitality & inspiration in LuAn Mitchell-Halter's rise from poverty to corporate executive, philanthropist & three-time Leading Woman Entrepreneur of the World.

    Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Not a "How to" book by any means........2006-12-29

While an occasionally entertaining read , it is essentially useless for anyone looking for a "how to" book. There are a few helpful hints in the book, but overall is a waste of time. I found myself hurrying to finish it to get a book that might be useful. At least it was cheap!

1 out of 5 stars waste of money waste of time.......2002-12-14

Wow, I bought the book thinking it would be a helpful how-to-guide, it was more like a BAD novel of someone who had spent too much time in the deep under belly of New York. Don't waste your money or time on this one it's not one bit helpful. Amazon[.com] sells better books for a successful restaurant, I know I found one and this one was not it!

5 out of 5 stars For Every Restaurant Start-Up.......2002-11-18

I found this book got right to the core of starting a restaurant in a logical and easy to understand way. It contains a useful practical approaches to tasks that must be dealt with in a restaurant start-up. It also suggests ways to cope with if not avoid many typical problems, and presents numerous strategies for increasing chances of success. Very good and useful.

    1 out of 5 stars Badly written.......2001-05-01

I agree with the other review, just mundane chit chat. I wonder if the author has ever been in the back office of a real restaurant.

1 out of 5 stars And the restaurant?.......2000-07-27

Mostly trivial chit-chat on which liquors to purchase assorted with obvious stuff, like an item list including mustard! This book is not only parochially American (and this might perhaps justify the very heavy stress on beverage sales) but also essentially irrelevant to anybody who would like to start a gourmet restaurant, being instead perhaps useful to somebody who'd like to open a greasy spoon for heavy drinkers. If there were a money-back guarantee I sure would have used it, having made the mistake to purchase it.

Computational Geosciences with Mathematica is the only book written by a geologist specifically to show geologists and geoscientists how to use Mathematica to formulate and solve problems. It spans a broad range of geologic and mathematical topics, which are drawn from the author's extensive experience in research, consulting, and teaching. The reference and text leads readers step-by-step through geologic applications such as custom graphics programming, data input and output, linear and differential equations, linear and nonlinear regression, Monte Carlo simulation, time series and image analysis, and the visualization and analysis of geologic surfaces. It is packed with actual Mathematica output and includes boxed Computer Notes with tips and exploration suggestions. The accompanying CD-ROM contains notebooks of all text and graphics, plus an appendix on color graphics and specialised functions.

                        Book Description

This sturdy board book filled with big, bright, full-page, full-color illustrations has tiny sunken tracks on every page. Each track is just the right size so that toddlers can run a finger across the picture, following the trail of a colorful ladybug. Some trails are straight, while others have curves or wiggles or corners—but each trail moves across a picture in exactly the way that the story's hero moves. Very young children will love these stories, as they trace a finger through a flower garden, or up a flight of stairs, or across the back of a big, furry dog.

A timeless story deftly retold, this adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen's The Ugly Duckling shines under the storytelling skills of Carnegie-winner Kevin Crossley-Holland (The Seeing Stone) and the playful watercolors of Meilo So (The 20th-Century Children's Poetry Treasury).

This all-star pair of Brits captures the personality of the poor persecuted duckling perfectly, as he's shunned by his fellow farm animals, his family, and even by a hunting party: "'Mercy!' cheeped the little duckling. 'I'm so ugly not even the dog wants me.'" He then begins a year-long journey through an inhospitable world, further rejected by an old woman and her cruel cat and hen ("'Can't you lay eggs?' asked the hen. 'No,' said the duckling. 'Shut up, then!'").

The beauty of So's delicate strokes only grows as the story reaches its time-honored climax, the reunion of the "duckling" with a flock of regal swans. And just as Andersen's story is likely semiautobiographical, more than a few kids (and grownups, too) will be particularly pleased when our handsome hero finds his home. (Ages 4 to 8) --Paul Hughes

                                Book Description

Each season brings a new obstacle for the unloved duckling—from summer on a farm where the other animals tease him to a cold, lonely winter on a frozen pond—but the duckling continues on his search for acceptance. At last spring arrives, and with it comes the duckling’s glorious discovery that he has grown into the most noble of creatures, a swan.

This child-friendly edition introduces the next generation of readers to the magic of Hans Christian Andersen.

Kevin Crossley-Howard retells this classic, with Meilo So's Asian-inspired paintings adding a new look and touch to the traditional tale. An oversized, ugly duckling finds new life in his looks as he grows into his abilities in this warm story.

This sturdy board book filled with big, bright, full-page, full-color illustrations has tiny sunken tracks on every page. Each track is just the right size so that toddlers can run a finger across the picture, following the trail of a friendly spider. Some trails are straight, while others have curves or wiggles or corners—but each trail moves across its picture in exactly the way that the story's hero moves. Very young children will love these stories, as they trace a finger through a flower garden, or up a flight of stairs, or across the back of a big, furry dog.

The Crossley Baby looks at first to be a novel about a family, but it's really a portrait of a (very difficult) lady. The Crossley sisters grow up poor and smart in a small town on Long Island. Later, they disperse over 1980s Manhattan, inhabiting very different corners. Bridget, the oldest, arrives from her travels in Nepal with a hippie wardrobe and a spaced-out attitude. Fresh from Columbia, acerbic Jean becomes a successful corporate headhunter. And the youngest, Sunny, Harvard-educated and pursued by glamorous men, marries an idealistic Harlem landlord and becomes a stay-at-home mom. When Bridget dies during a routine surgery, Jean-in-a-suit and Sunny-in-a-minivan are left to duke it out over the custody of Bridget's baby daughter Jade. The family dynamics catch fire nicely, but the book belongs to Jean. Witty, brittle, married to a secretive man and almost pathologically incapable of any show of emotion, Jean is an unlikely--but very likable--protagonist. Its a surprising pleasure to navigate throught the world with her. Author Jacqueline Carey has a disjointed, clever, often funny voice perfectly suited to Jean's off-kilter view of the world. Here she is at church: "Because Catholics have to attend mass every week, they value efficiency above all. The challenge is to speed up the ceremony without letting a fast walk break into a run." In short, Jean gets all the good lines. Without compromising Jean's dignity or slipping into sentiment, Carey reveals the emotional core of a woman with all the warmth of an ice cube. This is tricky work, beautifully done. --Claire Dederer

                                  Book Description

Bridget, Jean, and Sunny Crossley grow up in modest circumstances on Long Island, and all end up in the New York City of the 1980s. Free spirit Bridget, the oldest, is a well-traveled, sometime massage therapist in the East Village. Outspoken Jean is a corporate headhunter in double-breasted power suits who lives in a gleaming Upper East Side tower. Harvard-educated Sunny, the youngest and sweetest sister, drifts from eligible boyfriend to eligible boyfriend until she falls for a Harlem real estate developer and starts a family.

When Bridget dies unexpectedly during what should have been a routine operation, she leaves behind a ten-month-old girl named Jade. The big question becomes: Who should take the baby? The obvious and expert Sunny, or the never-at-home career woman Jean? The answer is, of course, more complicated than either sister could have anticipated.

not sure some people that read this realize that the author of this book is not the same who wrote the Kushiel fantasy series. So, if you think they are the same person, you will be greatly disappointed.

2 out of 5 stars Is this even the same author?.......2005-06-23

I had read Carey's other books (the Kushiel trilogy, and Banewreaker) and was completely delighted with them. Figuring that a good author generally doen't put out a bad book, I picked this one up. Well, now I have learned better.

This book is painfully dissapointing. Sunny is written like a caricature of that friendly girl in high school who solved everybody's problems by putting her ankles behind her ears. Bridget is written like a ghost long before she's actually dead. Jean is almost a saving grace, but it's too little too late.

Don't waste your time. This author is a wonderful writer, just not in this book. I feel like I just bought a Maria Callas recording, only to hear her yodeling on the disc.

I was so looking forward to this book after reading a "literary" review but was so disappointed. The premise was good but the book didn't deliver. I stuck with it to the end, but it didn't help.

                                  2 out of 5 stars Maybe I was reading a different book..........2004-02-13

... than the reviewers. I found this to be pseudo-literary, interiorly-focused drivel. While the premise was somewhat interesting [the reason for the second star] I found the writing as annoying as that of Erica Jong, who turns out the same kind of cutesy closet philosophy and know-it-all narrative.

Yuck. Stick with genre BDSM, Jacqueline.

5 out of 5 stars dry, wry, fun.......2003-09-30

From the reviews, I expected "The Crossley Baby'" to be yet another attack on "career women," another hymn to stayathome mothers. In fact, it's neither. Jean, the hard-driving businesswoman sister, is a wonderful comic invention -- watching her always get what she wants is fascinating, and , like the serpent in the bible, she gets all the best lines, too. Sunny, the "nice" suburban-mom sister, gets what she wants too -- but in the process she has to toughen up a bit and shed some of her illusions about what you can get with a smile. I loved Carey's dry wit--very sharply observed.

A ribbon loop hangs below the die-cut pages, behind which Peter Cottontail peeks mischievously. Up and down arrows direct the reader to pull or release the ribbon, allowing the bunny to hide behind a basket of flowers, a pile of chocolate eggs, and a sack of jellybeans. Pudgy, fluffy woodland and meadow animals romp through the pages, enchanted by the surprises their rabbit friend has to offer. Sure, it's a gimmick, but it's awfully cute, and there's no question kids will delight in the pull-toy mechanism. Like it? Try Hide-and-Seek Puppy for more hoppy hijinks! 5 out of 5 stars Fun anytime, not just for Easter!.......2001-04-15

I purchased both of Crossley's Hide-and-Seek books for my son when he was 6 months old, and he has always loved them! They're wonderful interactive books, and in this one, Peter Cottontail "pops up" to surprise bears, ducks, and a lamb with candy and flowers on Easter morning. My son loves to anticipate each page, even though by now he knows exactly what to expect. To this day, he goes nuts over the ducks, and he loves to point out everything in each picture. Very simply written and colorfully illustrated, I only wish that Mr. Crossley would give us more of these! I must add that this book has somehow managed to survive my son's every attempt to destroy it. It's a very sturdy board book, and the elastic that holds Peter is extremely strong, but I'd *still* recommend putting this book away after the reading session is over.

2 out of 5 stars It does not work.......2000-06-08

Although Peter Cottontail is a very nice character, the young reader has to pull a string -- so the rabbit Peter will be hidden from sight. The mechanism do not work if you are intending to give this book to a baby or a toddler, specially because there are signs during the text, indicating if the child is supposed to pull down on the string or release it. Too complicated for the youngers, I think.
