So few real "secrets".......2003-05-25
I'm shocked at the wealth of positive reviews for this book. It doesn't supply secrets, it just provides flowery arguments for the reasons why to network.
We all know it is important to network- that's why would have bought the book in the first place. Its lack of useful advice or specific tactics was disappointing.
I expect to see Donna Fisher in informericals.
An essential guide to networking.......2003-02-26

Excellent book on creating relationships.......2000-03-08
This is the best book I have read on the subject of networking. It focuses on the aspect of "giving" information to the people you network with rather than "getting" something from them. We would all be much better off if everyone practiced just a few of the techniques that the author shares. I plan on incorporating most of the 55 practical tips right away. The book is a fast-read and is very helpful if you want to connect with people for any purpose, whether it be for your career or for social reasons.
A Must-Have for the Professional Salesperson.......1999-03-21
My business depends upon networking and cultivating prospects. Donna Fisher's book is a primer, with suggestions, recommendations, and how-to's. Real knowledge that one can put to use immediately. Very good information that can be used at both the professional and personal level.

Authoritatively written by a Certified Public Accountant Norm Ray who draws from his more thirty-five years of professional experience, Smart Tax Write-Offs is now in an updated fourth edition and presents the reader with a straightforward collection of advantageous guidelines and suggestions which small business owners can utilize to save money. Thirty pages of this brief yet practical guide are devoted to an extensive checklist of common items that can be considered business supplies and deducted to save money. Deductions are Money in the Bank.......2000-10-06
Concentrate on net not gross; what is important is how much you keep. Every business needs all the deductions it is entitled to. If you are self-employed or run a small business, searching for deductions is fun. And it is your money.
This 128-page book lists and explains over 700 deductions a business owner is legally entitled to. For coverage, click on Table of Contents in the left-hand column of this page.
When I was just starting out in the business world, working for someone else, I vowed to learn about deductions. Each year, I wrote down every cent I spent, including each penny in the parking meter. At the end of the year, I totaled my expenses and send the totals to a tax preparer. I was amazed at how much money I got back from the IRS. That taught me some lessons: Keep (accurate) records, use a tax preparer and get your money back.
Norm Ray is a CPA and an experienced home-based business owner. He has been in your trench and is well-equipped to advise you on financial matters.
As a (self-employed) author of 113 books (including revisions and foreign-language editions) and over 500 magazine articles and a consultant to the publishing industry, I recommend this book to writers, publishers, the self-employed and small business owners. DanPoynter@ParaPublishing.com.
Hundreds of legal tax deductions for entrepreneurs........2000-03-03
From deductions for home-based businesses to independent contractors and equipment purchases, Smart Tax Write-Offs combines a checklist of possibilities with chapters outlining hundreds of tax deduction possibilities for entrepreneurs in this newly revised third edition for 1999 and 2000..
This "pamphlet" is the worst book I ever bought........1999-09-16
I bought this book because of the catchy title. The book is 120 pages long with very trivial tax tips. On top of that, almost haft of the book is blank space. I bought this book with certificate. Now, I got stuck with "smart" book. Oh well, smart for the author, stupeeed of me.
For Those Who Appreciate A Flare For the Obvious.......1999-09-06
This book (It's really more of a pamphlet) is all of 65 pages in length (Actually it's not even "all of" 65 pages -- There's a lot of conspicuous double spacing as well as a blank page in each chapter for "Notes"). The remaining 56 pages contain mostly silly checklists as well as the index. The information provided is basic and, in most cases, extremely obvious. If you're looking for some really interesting ideas, this is not the place to look. This is the type of information you will find in just about any mainstream magazine around tax time.

Book Description
This book is a sophisticated comparative analysis of the doctrine of unjust enrichment in international, North American, and Jewish legal systems. Dagan offers an explanatory theory that reveals the normative underpinnings of the doctrine, facilitates the prediction of legal outcomes, and supplies the necessary tools for evaluating existing legal rules. The theory of unjust enrichment is seen to be implicated in the prevailing background ethos of the societies he studies, and deeply influenced by their conceptions of self and community.

Book Description
The field of chemical reaction dynamics has made tremendous progress during the last decade or so. This is due largely to the development of many new, state-of-the-art experimental and theoretical techniques during that period. It is beneficial to present these advances, both theoretical and experimental, in a review volume (Parts I and II). The primary purpose of this review volume is to provide graduate students and experts in the field with a rather detailed picture of the current status of advanced experimental and theoretical research in chemical reaction dynamics. All chapters in these two parts have been written by world-renowned experts active in such research.
Book Description
Seven delightful books of warmth and whimsy take young readers to the Green Forest to meet Mrs. Quack, Johnny Chuck, Bobby Raccoon, and other characters to learn gentle lessons about wildlife and the environment.
Customer Reviews:
Classics!.......2007-07-09
I just bought both boxed sets to give to my brother for his children. We both remember the books fondly from when Mom would read them to us when we were young.
My boxed set contained these books: Old Mother West Wind, Old Man Coyote, Prickly Porky, Bobby Raccoon, Johnny Chuck, Jimmy Skunk, and Jerry Muskrat.
I love these books.......2007-03-28
As a child I read and loved the Burgess Book of Nature Lore. I wanted to give some of the same love of nature to my own daughter and found that Thornton W. Burgess had written many nature books for children. This particular set is a great starting off point for your young child. I love the way the author incorporates the description, habitat, and sound of many of the animals he is talking about. When your child hears these stories over and over they will be well on their way to discovering the natural world. When I read ""Mrs. Redwings Speckled Egg" to my daughter I have her hold her stuffed replica of a red wing black bird which actually makes the sound of the red wing black bird. It all comes to life for her. She is not quite three and she already is starting to identify different bird calls because these books give us the opportunity to talk about them. If you love nature and you have children you will love these books. Heck even if you don't have kids and are a kid at heart you will love these books.
Much loved stories from my childhood.......2007-03-10
I loved these stories when I was a child. I would go to the library to get book after book. Now I am happy to give them to children I know and to discover that I still enjoy them. The author knew nature and he gave to all his animal characters the qualities that he found in nature. The blue jay is, of course, very loud and boisterous. Without really knowing it, I was learning to love and appreciate a variety of animals as I laughed at their antics in the stories.
Old Mother West Wind and 6 Other Stories : The Adventures of.......2002-02-03
Any of Thorton W. Burgess's books are great reading for children. The stories are simple enough for children to relate to and will stimulate their imaginations as well as their appetite for books that are fun to read.
The downside of these books is that your children are probably going to want to read as many in the series as possible. Fortunately the prices at Amazon are reasonable and if you need to save some money you can take your children to the library where they will quickly memorize the location of books by Thorton W. Burgess.
very suitable for young readers.......2000-03-31
Basically, I enjoyed the book a lot. The story is simple, but inspiring. The sentences repeats itself a lot, but as an adult, I still found it interesting. I think not only this book, but the whole series of this authur is a great for kids to read. The pictures in it is also kinda fun.
Book Description
Perfect for gift-giving--a classic illustrated by Michael Hague, in a beautifully redesigned edition.Thornton W. Burgess said that imagination was "the birthright of every child." His Old Mother West Wind stories, first published in 1910, have worked their magic on generations of children.

One morning when Mr. Sun was very, very bright and it was very, very warm, down on the Green Meadows Reddy Fox came hopping and skipping down the Lone Little Path that leads to the Laughing Brook. Hoppity, skip, skippity hop! Reddy felt very much pleased with himself that sunny morning. Pretty soon he saw Johnny Chuck sitting up very straight close by the little house where he lives.

Read aloud stories for small children.......2007-08-12
This stories were first told to his own children by Thornton Burgess. Then they were read to me by my mother over 60 years ago. They were long out of print when my own children were of the right age but they are back for my grandchildren. They are highly recommended.
Sweet, Timeless Short Stories.......2006-06-23
A book of short stories about animals who talk, _Old Mother West Wind_ is enjoyable for a child of about five years to about eight as a read aloud (or older, if your child isn't terribly worldly.) These short tales often attempt to explain "how", as in how the skunk got his stripe, and have, in addition to the animals, characters such as Mother Nature and the Merry Little Breezes.
Many of these stories attempt to teach a moral, though often it is not obvious due to the author's skill. These are old stories and they reflect the values of the time they were written in. My ADHD eleven year old read the book himself and enjoyed it and is looking forward to the sequel.
Here are the stories included:
1) Mrs. Redwing's Speckled Egg - Mrs. Redwing has just laid a beautiful new egg and the Merry Little Breezes must help keep it safe from Tommy Brown.
2) How Reddy Fox Was Surprised - When Johnny Chuck wanders too far from home, Reddy Fox decides to play a trick on him. But the joke's on Reddy Fox.
3) Why Grandfather Frog Has No Tail - Grandfather Frog tells the Merry Little Breezes why Mother Nature took away all frogs' tails.
4) Why Jimmy Skunk Wears Stripes - When Mrs. Ruffed Grouse's eggs are destroyed by "a pair of eyes," the whole forest seeks the culprit. When Jimmy Skunk is found out, his days of night camouflage are over. (This was my son's favorite.)
5) The Willful Little Breeze - When one of the Merry Little Breezes stays in the Green Meadow after Old Mother West Wind has gone home behind the Purple Hills, he foils Hooty the Owl and Reddy Fox's plans to eat Mr. Bob White and his family.
6) Reddy Fox Goes Fishing - While Reddy Fox sleeps, he dreams he can fish as well as Billy Mink, but Reddy Fox just ends up all wet.
7) Jimmy Skunk Looks for Beetles - As Jimmy Skunk looks for beetles, he doesn't make any friends, but is rather selfish and destructive. However, the adventure really starts when Peter Rabbit decides to help.
8) Billy Mink's Swimming Party - Billy Mink invites Jerry Muskrat and Little Joe Otter to a swimming party at the Smiling Pool.
9) Peter Rabbit Plays a Joke - When Peter Rabbit tries to play a joke on Johnny Chuck and Reddy Fox, the joke back-fires.
10) How Sammy Jay Was Found Out - When Happy Jack's store of nuts disappears, Old Mother West Wind forms a committee of the whole to solve the mystery.
11) Jerry Muskrat's Party - When Jerry Muskrat throws a swim party, many of his guests aren't having any fun. Then, Little Joe Otter comes up with an idea that saves the party.
12) Johnny Chuck Finds the Best Thing in the World - When Striped Chipmunk hears Old Mother West Wind tell the Slender Fir Tree that she's found the Best Thing in the World, everyone starts to search for it--and everyone imagines it as something different.
13) Bobby Coon and Reddy Fox Play Tricks - When Bobby Coon and Reddy Fox trap Johnny Chuck inside his home, Jimmy Skunk helps Johnny Chuck surprise the two of them.
14) The Tale of Tommy Trout, Who Didn't Mind - Though Tommy Trout's mother tried to warn him of the dangers outside of their little pool, Tommy Trout didn't listen.
15) Little Joe Otter's Slippery Slide - When Little Joe Otter, Billy Mink, and Jerry Muskrat build a mud slide on the bank of the Smiling Pool, Peter Rabbit's curiosity gets the best of him.
16) Spotty the Turtle Wins a Race - When Peter Rabbit, Reddy Fox, and Billy Mink decide to race to see who's fastest, Peter Rabbit teases Spotty the Turtle that he should join. Spotty the Turtle does, and uses his mind to win the race.
Excellent childrens book.......2006-02-25
This book was a gift to my 6 year-old grandson. He loves it; both the stories and the pictures. This is a book my mother read to me when I was little boy. My favorite character was Bobby Coon.
Every Child Should Have This Book.......2005-09-30
Thornton Burgess was a naturalist and the stories of animals in Old Mother West Wind are wonderful. The characters attitudes and behaviors are true to the animal portrayed. A wonderful way to get acquainted with nature. Perfect book for an adult to read to a younger child.
an OUTSTANDING edition.......2005-05-06
If you want to introduce your children to Thornton Burgess, this is the edition to do it with. The illustrations by Michael Hague are captivating and go hand in hand with the lovely stories. It has started a Thornton Burgess reading marathon which has brought much enjoyment to bedtime reading as well as play time (they like to act out the stories). Our favorites of this edition are the story of How Johnny Chuck Found the Best Thing in the World and the illustration of Old Mother West Wind. It has also sparked an interest in Michael Hague's other book illustrations (although this is our favorite by far!). The children's only negative comment about the other editions (the Dover Thrift Adventures of ...... series) is that they miss the beautiful illustrations- but the stories have a way of capturing their imagination even without them.

Fond Memories from Childhood.......2005-11-16
I was an avid reader as a child. So when my family went to visit acquaintances but I was bored, I explored their bookshelves. One day I came across this old book. (It was old and rare even back then.) I was curious because it looked different from anthing I'd read before. I ended up borrowing "Mother West Wind Why Stories" many times from our acquaintance, because I wanted to read it over and over again. Then I asked the public library to track down another book in the series: Mother West Wind "How" Stories. I read stories from both books aloud to my friends. I loved how every story presented a moral, like Aesop's fables -- but reading Aesop was dry when compared to Mother West Wind.
Because these books were difficult to find, yet I wanted to be able to continue rereading, I eventually decided to copy them. This was before copy machines. I remember this book so vividly because I gave up playtime for many weeks to tediously copy each story in longhand, in childish handwriting, onto a large stack of paper. It was a price I was happy to pay, so that I could participate in the world of Mother West Wind.
I'm gratified to see that these books remain available for children now to enjoy as they grow up.
Customer Reviews:
Great Stories for the Young and Not-so-young.......2006-07-11
This book of short stories is an easy read for an upper elementary school child who will not even realize the life-lessons he is learning as he reads of the adventures of Peter Rabbit, Bobby Coon, the Merry Little Breezes, and the rest of the gang. My eleven year old son read it and enjoyed it.
For a read aloud, this book could be read to children as young as a mature three-year-old and certainly would be enjoyed by four to six-year-olds and older children. Since the stories are short and there are a few pictures, and since the action is happening to and by the animals, these stories have no trouble holding a young child's attention. My almost four year old was able to follow along.
Have your child dictate to you or write his own "meadow story" after being inspired by these and you have an excellent learning resource.
Summary: I enjoyed these stories even more than the original, _Old Mother West Wind_. I recommend _Mother West Wind's Children_ be added to your home library.
Wonderful stories - not so great "print".......2000-09-14
These stories have quickly become a bed-time necessity in our house for my 4 year old who now requests them by character. The only draw back is the excessive number of typos in the copy - reddy fox becomes reddy fix, etc. Once you've read them as much as I have, they are quickly overlooked, but the warning is nice to have!
Thornton Burgess is a magnificent children's author.......2000-03-31
Mother West Wind's Children introduces you to the inhabitants of the world - the meadow, forest and stream - that Thornton W. Burgess created for children. He wrote a number of books, telling the adventures of each character separately, with most of the others appearing in each book. I was thrilled to find that this world enchants today's youngsters. I cannot recommend this book, and, really, all of Thornton W. Burgess' books too highly. If you give them or read them to a child, they will be left with warm memories of all these animals for a lifetime, as well as getting the life lessons that are woven into all real literature, which this is.
