Wow! I just finished this book, and I can't stop thinking about it! Rice has a way of sucking the reader in from page one and never letting go. And the characters were so believable and realistic I felt like they were my own friends, and I was right there with them.

This was a fun read, already one of my faves. It had the perfect combination of horror, suspense, and drama. Readers will not be disappointed!

Great Story for a first novel.......2004-02-04

This is James Michael Rice's first novel and it is a winner! The story describes the adventures of a young group of high schoolers, as they stubble onto a crime scene that has remained unsolved for a long, long time. Very refreshing style of writing. I couldn't put it down. Buy this now because once Oprah gets wind of this, everyone will want to read it.

The book introduces and develops the basic actuarial models and underlying pricing of life-contingent pension annuities and life insurance from a unique financial perspective. The ideas and techniques are then applied to the real-world problem of generating sustainable retirement income towards the end of the human life-cycle. The role of lifetime income, longevity insurance, and systematic withdrawal plans are investigated in a parsimonious framework. The underlying technology and terminology of the book are based on continuous-time financial economics by merging analytic laws of mortality with the dynamics of equity markets and interest rates. Nonetheless, the book requires a minimal background in mathematics and emphasizes applications and examples more than proofs and theorems. It can serve as an ideal textbook for an applied course on wealth management and retirement planning in addition to being a reference for quantitatively-inclined financial planners.

To many people, the book's topic is an inherently dreary and offputting one. How to estimate retirement income for a group of people, who typically are still in the workplace?

To do so, the book invokes such common ideas as numerical simulations. Here, of a general diffusion process, specialising to Brownian motion. Who could have imagined, decades ago, when such ideas were introduced in physics, that they would one day have use to actuaries and the like? A neat side note is that one of the book's problems involves using Excel's ability to simulate Brownian processes.

A key chapter compares defined benefit and defined contribution pensions. From the vantage of the pension provider. Who needs to understand as accurately as possible the ultimate costs of both, in order to determine what to offer employees.

I purchased this book over a month ago. I expected to receive additional supporting materials which would greatly aid my understanding of the various formulas used throughout the book. The additional supporting material has yet to be posted. As such, currently, i feel i have been overpromised and underdelivered.

As mathematically sophisticated as Arnold but, unlike Arnold, Marsden has the good grace to properly define fundamentals such as the various spaces and transformations used. The introductory exposition of similarities and differences of Lagrangian and Hamiltonian mechanics is most helpful and refreshing.

certainly not for self-study.......2005-04-14

This review is for Engineers. The back cover of the book says that it is accessible to advanced undergrads... to engineers etc. I am doing PhD in engineering and I have taken many classes in Math (including differential geometry, topology, analysis, PDEs, abstract algebra) and Mechanics. With great difficulty
I read this book (about 50% of the book). It is not well-organized.

The theory is not carefully developed. For example, the first
chapter is one of the difficult chapters to understand all the
things as it tries to give the summary of the book. The Chapter
9 (on Lie groups) says that the definition on Lie Algebra is
in the Introduction (it is not clear whether it is in the Introduction of the chapter or in the Introduction of the
book). After seeing in the index, one can find that it is in the Introduction of the text. If a person is encountering this
kind of stuff for the first time, how will he remember what is given in the Chapter 1 (given the fact that Chapter 1 is the
one of the difficult chapters to read in this book). Do n't you think it is logical to give this important definition in Chapter 9 as the previous chapters does not require this definition.

The book may be suited for a class as the professor will guide
the students. But for self-study, I do not recommend this book.
Instead I recommend the book by Arnold. Though the book by
Arnold is not as sophisticated as Marsden, it gives nice
picture for an engineer.

whatch the index.......2000-06-09

I truely liked the book, but in the edition I have got, the whole index is messed up, i.e. you find the keyword a few pages below the page given in the index. Probably this blunder will not be repeated in coming up editions...I hope so, because the book is worth being used.
