Book Description
Whether you're a big company manager facing a merger or layoff, a new economy go-getter who wants to survive the shakeout, or an entrepreneur looking to transition a business to the next level, you undoubtedly will faceif you haven't alreadysome sort of workplace shift. That's because reinvention at warp speed is the norm in today's work world.
For the first time, a business professional provides other business professionals with advice on how to rejuvenate, revamp, or recreate their jobs, the businesses they work for, manage, or own, or both. Felicia Zimmerman presents readers with a comprehensive and intensely-practical approach. She lays out five reinvention options, seven steps to complete these options, and hands-on implementation assistance. Zimmerman also profiles eight successful businesspeople whose stories demonstrate that her approach works.

rewrite reinvent.......2003-06-24
This is a book that is based on an interesting idea, a practical step by step guide to help you devise the steps for a transformation in your career. Not what the transformation should be or if you want to do it, but once you have made the decision, helpful hints and guides as to the steps involved in getting there. She sites examples for personal to corporate level transformations which for me as a small business owner were very interesting and touch many salient points. The interviews with other business people provide informative and encouraging stories and provide a nice narrative closure to each chapter. However, the author then pairs each separate story with one of her own transformation. Once would have been OK, but she does it too often to be anything but arrogant and repetitive. And indeed this is often the problem with the writing of the book in general. It is so deeply redundant that it took a great deal of discipline to not start skipping around and skimming the material which would have been a shame. Because as bad as it is, nestled in all the redundant repittiions, (maybe I should say that again!) there are a few good ideas that are worthy of the read. The author's last transformation was to become a writer and public speaker and while I have no doubt that she is a talented and persuasive salesperson (she did talk someone into publishing this book), she is not a very good writer and would have done better to have collaborated with someone who is.
Reinvent you.......2002-02-22
Reinvent Your Work is an intriguing read. Felicia Zimmer explores ways to reinvent work. There are five basic "patterns" for recreating work they are as follows:
Reinvigorate your job
Change Jobs within your company
Enhance your business' offerings or approach
Transition your business
Start a new business within your company
One of the neat concepts in Reinvent Your Work is there in fact multiple ways to accomplish a reinvention (the list above). Another neat concept is that a reinvention can be at a corporate level rather then just a personal reinvention.
Some other books on reinvention "activities" make your take personality tests and other self diagnosing activities. The end result is a self diagnosis without necessarily insight into how to reinvent or how to get to your reinvention. Reinvent Your Work also profiles individuals and how they went through the reinvention process, which was quite insightful.
I think that Reinventing Your Work takes an extremely pragmatic approach to helping you unearth your reinvention, define how to get it done, keep it on track and monitor when it is time for the next reinvention. Reinvent Your Work is not a one size fits all approach to reinvention.
If you pick this book up (and you should) be ready to do some serious thinking about who you are, what you really want and defining a path to get there.
Roadmap for Reinvention.......2001-10-18
Reinvent Your Work is straightforward advice on how to reinvent your career. Takes you step-by-step through the reinvention process. Written such that you feel you are sitting down over lunch with the author. Real-life anecdotes are compelling.
Great Road Map.......2001-10-17
As a recent MBA graduate, Reinvent Your Work is an excellent road map to find your work ideal. Throughout the book Zimmerman peppers you with questions. With each answer you move closer to your ideal work.
My suggestion is to read chapters 1 and 2 taking notes of the questions that you need to consider. Next, put the book down and consider these questions for about a week. After you have written down the answers, read chapter 3 while taking notes. Again, put down the book and consider the questions for about a week. Continue this process until you complete the book.
Once you have completed the book, you will have a clear understanding of your work ideal and most importantly how to get there.
Roadmap to Career and Corporate Transformation.......2001-10-17
Reinvent Your Work is more than the all-too-prevalent "help me find a job" resource by career coaches, psychologists, and journalists. Felicia Zimmerman uses her years of experience as a mentor, coach, and consultant to present an integrated picture of career and corporate evolution. That's what Zimmerman's five reinvention options are all about!
If your company truly believes that their employees are their most valuable asset, you or your leaders will appreciate how this book recognizes the inextricable link between the individual and the business. Forget terms like "skunk works", "thinking out of the box", and "breaking glass", this book is a classic road map of career and corporate transformation. Not a quick read that you put on the book shelf but an invaluable resource that you keep in your desk and consult when facing both opportunities and challenges.

Book Description
As the Soviet Union collapsed, many scholars and policymakers predicted that the pillars of Communism would collapse along with the state. Yet, the official trade unions not only continued to exist yet gained power in the late Soviet and post-Soviet period. Sue Davis explains the reasons why the official trade unions survive and thrive and why new, independent unions remain weak despite massive Western assistance. She examines many factors ranging from state policy to labor power in the late Soviet period as well as the first five years of the post-Soviet era in Russia and Ukraine.

Book Description
Baby on the Car Roof brings together 222 totally new, funny, quirky, frightening, bizarre and always entertaining urban legends. Urban legends or myths are dramatic and often humorous stories that circulate under the guise of truth and usually as having happened to "a friend of a friend" even though often they are entirely made-up. Organized by genre, each tale runs one- to two-pages long. Story variations are included in each listing. The subjects range from famous people, sex, office foibles and travel nightmares to college pranks, biological abnormalities and ghost stories.
Customer Reviews:
The Baby Got Thrown with the Bath Water!.......2003-05-01
This is a compendium of alleged Urban Legends. Included are some familiar old legends (the RV guy and the sandwich, the ubiquitous Neiman-Marcus cookie hoax) some new Legends (the experimental car) and some you'll swear are not Legends at all, but True Stories that Really Did happen to Great Uncle Fred's cousin's sister-in-law's hairdresser's nephew's girlfriend's father's fishin' buddy (Cadillac Rattle, Navy Pilot v. Lighthouse.)
Some are humorous (the resurrected rabbit,) some are gruesome (what is that dog choking on?) some are just plain gross (string cheese pizza) and some are literary rip-offs (the I'm-older-and-have-more-insurance Parking Lot Fiasco from *Fried Green Tomatoes* as UL)
Typos and other errata abound in this bath water brew, with little and no discussion of epistemology. Dump these tepid tales and refill with *Curses! Broiled Again! The Hottest Urban Legends Going!* Reviewed by TundraVision
Urban legends at the unbelievable best!.......2003-04-28
This book has an amazing 223 urban legends and every one of them is a gem. While some of the stories are recognizable urban legends, such as `the hook' `spunk ball' and `baby on the car roof', others are lesser known. All of them are fun, and most are a page or less.
This is the perfect book to throw in your suitcase or backpack for having a little fun while traveling, tanning, or waiting for an appointment. It's also a great conversation starter, and the stories are great to read at parties for a laugh or cringe.
If you do decided to invest very wisely and buy this book, please read "the backyard archeologist". It's one of my favorite short stories of all time.
Urban Legends are most often sourceless.......2002-07-27
A decent book, with more breadth than depth -- perfectly acceptable for the format. Designed to be a retelling of the legends, rather than a true documentation of their existence in society, the stories told get tedious after a while, like a too-long list of elephant jokes. The text is, as one reviewer already suggested, best treated as a compendium of short tidbits and humorous stories for bathroom reading and other "short form" experiences.
By the way, those several reviewers herein who dismiss this book by claiming that the book fails due to a lack of origin story for most of the urban legends included have clearly not studied urban legends, nor do they understand the way they work. Urban legends are a kind of modern FOLKLORE -- and folklore, by definition, is usually orally transmitted in the original and thus has NO date of origin. See Brumveld's "The Vanishing Hitchhiker," the definitive text in the field of HOW urban legends move through culture, for more on this phenomenon -- and it gives each legend more flesh and "version comparison," and thus is far more interesting as a true book than just a compendium of stories like "Baby on the Car Roof."
a good bathroom book.......2002-06-06
these "unbelievable" tales are good fodder for the restroom (i mean that in the most affectionate way possible). some of the stories will have you scratching your head (please make sure you wipe first) and others will make you laugh. you might want to tell one of these stories at your next family reunion when someone asks what you've been up to.
Needed more history on the urban legends........2002-03-03
The book is interesting, and fun to read, but it would have been better with more history on where the legends came from. It has a little, but not nearly enough. The book is a nice size (smaller than normal), which makes it a good book to travel with. Great for long car rides with other people. If your looking for a fast fun read this is good, but if you looking for a good book on urban legends, I'd look elseware.

Book Description
The immense popularity of movies has its roots in the silent films of the early 1900s, this being especially true of the crime genre. The authors of this Guide have compiled for the first time in one volume an entire history of the crime genre during the silent era, preserving the memories of these films for their own generation and introducing these works to a new generation thirsty for entertainment and knowledge. This Guide includes more than 2,000 film entries, complete with names of directors, screenwriters, and major players and offers a wealth of data supported by plot evaluations and occasional thematic commentaries. This is the only work that includes one- and two-reelers and serials along with full-length crime features. Each entry covers title, date of release, distributor or studio, director, screenwriter, major cast members, plot description, and thematic commentary, reviving this almost forgotten genre for generations of students and movie fans both old and new. The Guide pays tribute to the glory of cinema pioneers as diverse as D. W. Griffith and Lon Chaney who have given the world a wide variety of stories and experiences both thought-provoking and startling. Although men tended to dominate the silent years in Hollywood, women managed to contribute dramatically. Among them were director Lois Weber and film personalities Mabel Normand, Pearl White, Mary Pickford, and Ruth Roland. These creative men and women and their often neglected works deserve a second look. The likes of Pacino, Eastwood, and Brando can look to the past where the ground for their work was carefully prepared in such earlier silent films as Griffith's The Musketeers of Pig Alley (1912) and von Sternberg's Underworld (1927).

Book Description
This follow-up to Jeff Guinn's bestselling holiday favorites The Autobiography of Santa Claus and How Mrs. Claus Saved Christmas takes readers on a sleigh ride through the history of Christmas in America that lands smack-dab in 2006, as a new reality TV show threatens to destroy the true spirit of Christmas.
This third installment in Jeff Guinn's bestselling Christmas Chronicles series finds Santa facing perhaps the biggest challenge of his career. As Santa himself relates in this delightful holiday read, the trouble began in 1841, when a Philadelphia merchant named J. W. Parkinson hired a neighbor to dress as Kris Kringle in order to lure shoppers into his dry-goods store. Much to Santa's chagrin, it's been pretty much downhill since. It seems everybody wants a piece of Christmas, and through the years it has gotten worse- to the point that not a Christmas can go by without phony Santas posing on street corners across the country. But when, in 2006, it's announced that a new reality TV show called The Great Santa Search will feature a competition to find the "real" St. Nicholas, Santa knows it's time to step in!
With all the rich historical detail and glorious Christmas cheer that made The Autobiography of Santa Claus and How Mrs. Claus Saved Christmas treasured family favorites, The Great Santa Search is destined to become yet another Christmas classic from Jeff Guinn.
Customer Reviews:
Guinn Saves the Best for Last.......2007-03-20
In THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF SANTA CLAUS, Jeff Guinn chronicled the story of St. Nicholas and the myriad and sometimes unusual people who became "Santa's helpers" over the ages, and then Layla, Nicholas' wife, has a chance to shine in the grim Puritan setting of MRS. CLAUS SAVES CHRISTMAS. But the third book is a rollicking tale of what happens when a struggling network executive decides to create a reality series called "The Great Santa Search" to find the real Santa Claus--but the cheap toy manufacturer who is sponsoring the series just may foil the day. Guinn brilliantly skewers reality television series while following Nicholas' attempt to win the Great Santa Search so that "Santa" won't be endorsing the cheaply-made toys of the sponsor.
A worthy continuation of the Christmas Chronicles!.......2006-12-22
The third volume in Jeff Guinn's Christmas Chronicles is a worthy successor to his previous books, The Autobiography of Santa Claus and How Mrs. Claus Saved Christmas. Again, he delves into the historical facts behind Christmas tradition (in this case, the introduction and evolution of the department store Santa Claus) and weaves it with his own unique vision of St. Nicholas, for the first time telling an all-original story in the present day. A frustrated television producer comes up with a brainstorm to save his family network -- a reality television show that will declare the winner the one true Santa Claus. To make matters worse, the program is being sponsored by a shady, unscrupulous toymaker who wants the winner to become the national spokesman for her shoddy toys. The only way Santa can preserve his secrecy and still save the image of Santa Claus for children all over the world is to enter the competition himself -- and win it.
Guinn's new tale takes his now-classic version of Santa Claus to places he's never gone before: shopping malls to meet legions of excited children, into the workforce, and finally to a national television audience. Along the way, he introduces a wealth of new characters, and true to the spirit of this series, most of them are good at heart. The producer who concieves of the show -- he just wants a hit so he can keep making shows families can watch together. The grouchy mall manager has a secret that betrays a holiday sprit. Only the true villain of the piece shows not even a spark of decency, and even so, Santa Claus himself never gives up on her.
Just as Guinn, in the past, has woven in historical figures to flesh out his books, this time out he freely plucks real-life celebrities to play roles, and he does it with a purpose, without seeming like he's name-dropping. The trials poor Santa has to go through are equally amusing, from his fitness regimen dictated by Teddy Roosevelt to his confusion when kids start asking for modern, high-tech presents like PS3s and CD burners. Through it all, Guinn manages to make a true statement about the real meaning of Christmas, about the commercialization of it, and about how Santa's true mission is rooted in faith. In fact, this book would make an excellent Christmas movie, but I doubt any producer would want to touch it without removing the overt references to Jesus and the fact that Christmas is intended to give thanks to God for the gift of His son -- and changing those references would totally ruin the spirit of the piece. (Ironically, Santa himself faces a similar dilemma in the story.) Don't get me wrong, the book is never preachy or heavy-handed, but nor does Guinn blanch from frank statements about spirituality, a pretty courageous move in this day and age.
This book is a true, worthy continuation of the Christmas Chronicles, and I can only hope that Guinn continues to give us these Christmas presents for many years to come.

Book Description
Ned Barnes, The Search for Joulupukki is the first in a series of action adventure tales for the whole family. It tells of renowned explorer Nedlow Barnes's search across two continents and against seemingly insurmountable odds to uncover a mystery that could crush the faith of a five-year-old boy.
Woven into this Indiana Jones© style action is a stirring saga of human frailty and courage, struggle and redemption. It reaches deep into the hearts of readers, adults and children alike, to reawaken faith once more in the human spirit.
This story examines one of history's most celebrated figures, reduced in modern times to a marketing gimmick: Santa Claus. It turns this toddler fairytale into adult-level drama, portraying Santa Claus as a real flesh-and-blood hero whose noble actions transcend all cultural and religious boundaries.
It simultaneously introduces Dr. Nedlow Barnes and his explorations into the unknown, where chivalry and character-building conduct slip in so subtly, they almost go unnoticed, but leave their mark nevertheless.
Ned Barnes, the Search for Joulupukki has the power to lift America from its current social morass. Dr. Nedlow Barnes is molded in the image of Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan©. His signature clothing, vestpack, unique equipment, and logos have been developed for licensed products to promote Ned Barnes as America's new principle-centered action figure with a heart.
This is all-family entertainment, moving and inspirational, with the power to make a difference in our world; a story that every adult reader, when finished, will stand up and say, "Yes! We need more of this." Once you enter into the world of Joulupukki, I believe you will join in this chorus.

Product Description

Customer Reviews:
Good book but for old version of .NET.......2007-06-14
101 Microsoft Visual Basic .NET Applications
It is a good book with a lot examples to learn from.
But examples require some extra work if you use .NET 2005
Amazing reference!.......2005-10-12
I bought this book just a few weeks ago, and WOW. Thre is such a range of information here! This book is especially targeted at programmers that aren't particularly familiar with what all VB.NET can offer.
Granted, this product does not cover any of the topic very extensivly, but that's not what it was written for. 90% of the topics covered in the book are explained in more detail in the MSDN library.
All in all, this book is one of the best ways to find great ideas to improve functionality in all your VB.NET projects.
A book is more than just the code.......2004-10-02
Jerry Bucknoff wrote a review where he says skip the book because you can just download the code. I don't get this. I buy a book for more than just the CD stuffed in the back. This book has 500+ pages that taught me how to do in VB.NET, the things I knew how to do in VB6. Maybe if you're a rocket scientist, you can just stare at the code and learn everything, but those 500 pages really got me up to speed on .NET.
Getting down to brass tacks.......2004-07-28
This is the most PRACTICAL book I've seen on VB.Net. I've been working with VB.Net since it came out, but there were still a lot of problems with common situations. For example, he explains and illustrates Crystal Reports bettern than the only book I've found on Crystal Reports. He gets into the arcane world of forms that update SQL databases and the black art of binding with a "here's how to do it" approach. Generally speaking, he seems to have gone through the million-or-so class libraries and told you about the ones you really should know about and how to use them. A joy and a relief!
Not a book for beginners.......2004-07-20
Being new to VB I expected this book to help me through the rough spots. I am a embedded programmer who uses mostly assembly language, but wrote a fair amount of C programs on the PC using the old Borland 4. I find that seeing some examples is my best way to learn.
You would have thought with 25 years of experience I could figure out how to code in VB.
Well, this book looks like some C++ I have seen, not like any basic I am familiar with. Most examples look like cryptic C++. Perhaps this is the way VB6.net is, and, if so, I should have bought visual C++ because I know C, just not C++.
I suppose the book is fine for experienced VB programmers, but I cannot recommend it as a highly experienced programmer 'trying' VB for the first time.
