Customer Reviews:
Learn by example.......2002-11-17
If you have never wrote your resume (vitae), this book offers you a lot of examples that would give you an idea of what format and contents are good for your case. The "theory" is shown in a few pages. Just to tell you what you should write and avoid, including a list of verbs to help you writing.
There are also some examples of cover letters that I found useful. They show you the style, length and other features of these documents.
You would think that four stars may be too high if you have read other books on this subject, but I took only this book and it was enough for me: I was called for an interview. I am not giving five stars because I have not compared the book with any other.
All resumes no how to.......2002-01-11
This book is basically all sample resumes, which I don't find very helpful. It is probably better to tell someone how to write a good resume than give them a bunch of examples and tell them to copy them. So if you just want examples and about 7 pages of writing go for it otherwise, not worth it.

Book Description
* Includes Electronics Workbench CD-ROM with circuits constructed using this exciting software * Useful projects to build * Learn how to use Electronics Workbench, as well as take advantage of the circuit modules that are described and realized in this book Electronics Workbench has enabled a very wide variety of circuits to be designed on screen, tested and modified before being committed to a PCB layout. This book provides a collection of circuit modules that can be tried and tested using the enclosed CD-ROM in conjunction with Electronics Workbench Version 5. The book and CD-Rom guide the reader from the simplest circuits using bulbs and batteries to advanced systems using integrated circuits.
Customer Reviews:
Good book for starters.......2003-02-25
The book covers many different simple circuits and gives a few designing tips but it does not cover math nor enough details about the circuits, however a book that can be finished in a few weeks.Recommended for first or second year students.
A bit disappointed.......2001-02-09
First of all let me state that the Electronics Workbench program looks very interesting; what I've seen of it. The little demo that's on the CD-ROM only allows for extremely small circuits. It's barely a demo. It's a tease, but you can see the program's potential.
The author has presented some electronic material that's been around and published in many books. It's presented in a matter of fact manner. If he still teaches students, I'd try to find another class; one with more enthusiasm in the air.
I formally got into electronics in 1961. I built my first Allied Radio receiver around 1959. I loved to listen to the radio amateurs talk about their "Home Brew" equipment they were building. My point is that electronics should be fun, exciting and an adventure. It should not be a chore. It should not be boring.
There's nothing wrong with the simple circuits in the book. It's almost as if the Electronics Workbench demo was added to sell a book full of stale material. Then the title was juiced up to allow a potential buyer to think the book was about the use of Electronics Workbench with these hand-picked circuits. Not so. Except for six short statements before chapter one ( a clue ) the author barely alludes to the Electronic Workbench program; leaving the reader to figure it out on his own.
In conclusion I'll just say that this whole purchase and experience could have been much better if the Electronics Workbench demo would allow for more components in a circuit and if the author could have alluded to that program in his text.
A comprehensive beginners guide.......1999-12-05
A comprehensive beginners guide, but not only that but a book able to help some of the more experienced. It teaches you how to simulate both a circuit as a whole or a circuit broken up into modules to test their practical capability. It does not bother to paraphrase what is already in the manual but takes the reader into the realms of circuit design. Consequently I have found this book worth its weight in gold, as it has saved me many hard hours work and I have had the great pleasure of being able to toy with new ideas effortlessly.
Don't buy this book.......1999-12-04
This book is NOT about using the simulator program Electronics Workbench. It is a rehash of some old magazine articles about electronics, written at the hobbyist level or lower. It has NO useful information about the software. If you already know ohms law and want to learn Electronics Workbench forget this book.
What is the software version ?.......1999-09-21

Book Description
This book describes findings of a survey-based qualitative research study conducted among Detroit employers in the auto industry to evaluate explanations for why blacks are no longer catching up with whites in terms of wages, income and employment. A key finding is the fact that black employers were more likely to hire black workers, but both black and white employers with largely black workforces pay significantly lower wages than employers with largely white workforces. This wage difference is the organizing element of subsequent study chapters that address locational considerations, differences in recruitment and hiring practices among firms and possible differences in skill requirements among black and white-owned firms, and/or differences in skill-related worker characteristics among employees.
Customer Reviews:
not bad.......2007-03-22
slightly weaker than the other Factoid Press Big Book Series volumes, but well worth the purchase.
Fun, but..........2004-02-20
I enjoyed most of this book. There are some very amazing stories in here. Some are uplifting, while others are pure tragedy. The book does a good job of telling stories of all variety of old-time freak. Everyone from the infamous Hilton Twins and Lobster Man to the almost forgotten Carl Unthang, the armless violinist.
Be advised, for sake of shortening the stories, some info has been skewed(Example: Barnum's uncle never showed him Ivy Island, a worker did.)
The main gripe I have is the lack of Jim Rose material. He single-handedly brought the sideshow back into the public light, reviving the almost lost artform. The Jim Rose Circus Sideshow has been around since 1992. Seeing as how this book was published in 1996, there is no reason to exclude it.
Buy this book.......2002-05-22
I first picked up a copy of The Big Book of Freaks several years ago. I didn't purchase it that day and I have regretted it ever since.
I recently purchased copy online for [money] dollars. I was not let down. This is book is worth every penny. From the tragic tale of Jumbo the Elephant to the Lobster Boy, Freaks is well written and well illustrated. The picture of a Denatsate is creepy in the very least.
Buy this book.
Worth the Price of Admission.......2001-06-16
Written by repected cartoonist, Gahan Wilson (appropriately so since he is a direct descendant of P.T. Barnum), this is a fascinating look at the history of freaks in real life and in the media and treats the subject with a great deal of reverence and respect. Wilson goes beyond merely presenting the histories of various famous freaks, but also examines why we are so fascinated by them and laments the fact that with advances in genetics they may be a dying breed (with the exception of self-made freaks like those in the Jim Rose Circus).
Wilson begins with the historical roots of the sideshow, with the wild speculations about possible creatures that might exist in the days when much of the world was unexplored, to the fake freaks created for medieval carnivals and self-mutilated beggars, to the modern circus and portrayals in movies such as Tod Browning's "Freaks". In addition to such articles on specific themes are the histories of particular individuals ranging from the famous (the Elephant Man) to the not-so-famous (a "Lobster Man" who committed a murder in a Florida town composed almost entirely of retired circus freaks). The stories range from the heartwarming to the heartbreaking, the humourous to the serious, and include romance and adventure, but all of them treat the unusual individuals who are their subjects as human beings, with all the same potentials as well as the character flaws of any person, and avoids being exploitative. My personal favourite is the article drawn by Ivan Brunetti illustrating how ALL human beings are freakish and are constantly undergoing strange transformations.
The accompanying illustrations are also superb. This is definitely one of the best in the Big Books series.
The Comic Carny Midway.......2000-06-08
Step right up and see this book! Gahan Wilson is a genius of comic art, and he wrote this tome for Paradox Press. In this volume, you learn about all the famous residents of circus sideshows, the origins of the midway, and all sorts of human oddities. Like the movie "Freaks" says, "Come and see 'em!"

This deluxe, oversized, hard bound edition will turbocharge any coffeetable.
Customer Reviews:
Good Pictures, Stupid Captions.......2000-12-08
The anthology has its requisite good photos, interesting shots, incredible subject matter, and sexy money shots. However, the captions the editors insisted on pasting over every photo gets tiring and annoying at best, and is a poor attempt at...what? Humor? Too adolescent. Sarcasm? The well of wit has runneth dry. Entertainment? Its the pictures you're selling, not the jar-headed captions. Why ruin a good photo set with juvenile attempts at being clever. By the time I finished flipping through it, I had no interest in leaving it on the coffee table. Save the money.
The Perfect Conversation Peice.......2000-06-30
Keep in mind that I am a Maxim magazine subscriber. Having said that, I purchased a copy of this book for purely selfish reasons. I am always amused by oddity. I left the book out on my coach once when I had company over. A guest picked it up and screeched....the room stood silent! In a matter of moments everyone was huddled around the text. Forget coffee table books of Monet or Van Gogh, if you want to get a conversation started, this is the perfect coffee table book.

Book Description
Porn is more mainstream than ever witness recent bestsellers by Jenna Jameson, Traci Lords, The Vivid Girls, and Pamela Anderson. Continuing this fine tradition is The Big Book of Porn a friendly, funny celebration of adult movies. Chapters include:
- Know Your Classics: The 25 most important adult films.
- Great Moments in Porn History: From the first stag movie to the invention of the VCR.
- The Pantheon of Porn: These mini-bios of mega-stars like Seka and Ron Jeremy are filled with surprising trivia.
- It's a Porn World, After All: Adult movies from Canada, Japan, even Afghanistan.
- Make Your Own Porno: All you need is a video camera, a willing partner, and these simple pointers ("Tell a story," "Start with a bang," "Parody a real film title").
Best of all, The Big Book of Porn is illustrated with classic posters, stills, and production shots from the smutty '70s to the present day. Provocative, authoritative, and laugh-out-loud funny, The Big Book of Porn is a proud celebration of history's most scandalous art form.
Customer Reviews:
A thorough and fun examination of porn history.......2007-08-05
The Big Book of Porn lives up to its subtitle--it is a penetrating look at the world of dirty movies. It is a glossy, high-quality paperback with screenshots, actor portraits, vintage advertising posters, and glittery sidebars. Publisher Quirk Books has been known to release some wacky joke books in the past, but this thorough examination of a hobby with more viewers than sporting events (yes, it's true) is well worth the $20 cover price and a place on your history/anthropology bookshelf.
The book opens with a timeline of the invention of still and motion pictures, the ratings administered by the MPAA, the history of obscenity rulings by the Supreme Court, and the evolution of the stag film, peep show, dirty movie theater, and home video. The author is thorough in his examination of history, from the printing press to dime store novels to VHS to the Internet and on to...virtual reality? Grahams-Smith alleges that all the high-falutin' academic research in virtual reality is founded in a desire to invent the Holy Grail of porn. He decries our prudishness about "wardrobe malfunctions" and celebrates the mainstream influence of Madonna, men's magazine Maxim, and the rise of S&M-inspired fashion.
For anyone looking to advance their porn education, the author has a list of 20 all-time classics (Taboo, The Opening of Misty Beethoven, Insatiable, Alice in Wonderland, and more). The list explores the cultural and cinematic significance of each entry. Other lists include five modern classics and the two weirdest classics of all time (my lips are sealed, so pick up the book to find out the titles). The top list of leading ladies is impenetrable (who can argue with Annette Haven at #1?). Sidebars explore the magic formula for determining your porn name, the classic crossover actors, the international perspective, 20 sacred porn movie rules, and who's who in upcoming stars. Includes a glossary.
Page Turner.......2007-01-10
This is a great book written in a humorous and witty style. It will entertain you as well as educate you. It reveals a lot of real names of porn actors and actresses. Also, it is packed, and I mean packed with pictures. This book is a page turner, and hard (no pun intended) to put down. I would highly recommend.
If Cliff's Notes gave a crash course on porn..........2006-04-05
Remember when you used to ride the bus to school and there was that one tough kid who sat in the back seat who was wise beyond his years?
He was the go-to guy when you wanted to know about where to buy fireworks, what beer tasted like, and most importantly: what does "S-E-X" mean? You could ask him anything, and though he may chide you a bit, you'll get your answers.
Author Seth Grahame-Smith is THAT guy.
The Big Book of Porn has the answers to all those questions you were too lazy to search the internet to find, and too embarassed to ask your friends at the poker game. With a sharp and humorous slant to his writing, Grahame-Smith plows through the decades to make the Big Book of Porn an overview that's not only informative, but laugh out loud funny.
The Big Book of Porn isn't the end-all, be-all for the history of porn, but if you want a crash course in what was, is, and will be, it's a must-read primer. Before you know it, you'll be the tough kid everyone is coming to for answers.
I met my wife reading this book!.......2006-02-07
There she was, sitting just beyond the creamer
counter at Starbucks and she was reading the exact same page!?!
It was kismet. We clicked immediately.
I'm a porn history buff, but I had never known
some of these amazing facts and true stories!
Natalie loves the pictures and the do-it-yourself section.
The book is written with a great deal of humor, having
some fun with what is - too often - a very drab topic.
Great interviews, brilliant insights by the author,
and excellent descriptions consistantly make this
book an everyday read for this critic.
One word of advice though:
DO NOT BORROW THIS BOOK FROM A FRIEND.
Go out there and buy your own! It's a better idea!
Oh...and by "clicked"? I meant had sex with each other.

Book Description
World War II was unprecedented in the changes it demanded in the contours of British life. Work, the family, social policies and the media were all transformed, blurring the boundaries between private and public life and challenging class and gender divisions. In particular, women were called upon to play a range of new roles which threw into question traditional conceptions of femininity and national identity. What was the relationship between gender and nation when the waiting woman was displaced by the working woman and homes were flattened by bombs? What happened to notions of femininity, sexual difference and class as women moved into the workplace and donned dungarees, military uniforms and utility clothing? Such questions are explored in this collection of essays which brings together the work of prominent feminist researchers in film, media studies and social history. Case studies examine competing definitions of feminism circulating in the cinema, women's magazines, social policies, government pamphlets, fashion and broadcasting.

Book Description
From the Apophoreta of Imperial Rome to the ersatz grandeur of Las Vegas, from ritual divination to weekly lottery fever, individuals have pitted themselves against the chaotic forces of Fate. Gerda Reith examines the enduring appeal of gambling, exploring its complex relation to our underlying conceptions of the world, and to the social and cultural backgrounds of those who fall under its spell. Using a wide range of sources, she traces the origins of gambling in the ancient world and follows its manifestation in games as diverse as the patolli of the Aztecs and the Internet gambling of today. This fascinating and extensive study will be enthralling reading not just for those interested in the cultural and social implications of gambling - but for anyone interested in how we create meaning in an increasingly insecure world.
Customer Reviews:
Most authoritative modern text on the subject.......2002-01-08
This is the most illuminating, up-to-date, and entertaining history of gambling in the West that has yet been published. I was a student at the University of Salford (UK) when I had to read this as part of a course on the sociology of gambling. Reith's style is scholarly, yet accessible. This text stands as an example of how interesting and diverse the historical/ cultural development of gambling has been, and of how much gambling can tell us about modern society and, as such, stands as a riposte to the yawn-inducing tedium of the 'problem gambling' school of books on this topic, which consists of a bunch of safety-merchants/salesmen who (presumably) aspire to scholary wisdom, yet fail miserably to say anything useful about one of the most fundamental of human traits: the itch for play. In short, Gerda Reith's book should be required reading for anyone who is interested in why anyone would take a chance on anything (and not just gambling).

Book Description
This book is designed for advanced users and covers basic Word 2003 automation, automation using VBA and automation using XML, XSLT and Smart Documents.
Customer Reviews:
I was left frustrated and annoyed.......2007-08-02
This is one of the least useful books I have read in my 10+ years in the IT business. Written from an academic standpoint, there were few useful examples offered and no subject was discussed in enough detail to be useful. Examples were vauge at best.
While this book got me excited about the topic of document automation, I am unable to create a custom Smart Document solution from scratch after reading this book from cover to cover.
Buyer beware: This is a "What Is" book, not a "How To" book.
It delivers on its promise!.......2006-04-02
Quite often you see book titles that unfortunately do not match the subject content. This one certainly does! The back cover states that it sets out to explain how to:
- Automate documents with a minimum of programming by using Word's native functionality
- Use VBA to create document automation solutions
- Record macros, create automated templates, format and manipulate files using Word and build documents dynamically
- Create, edit and format XML documets
- Develop smart documents solutions to guide users through a variety of repetitive tasks
- Transform XML using WordprocessingML, XSLT, XPath, smart documents and web services technologies
Ok, to be fair I didn't find anything on web services explicitly but it still gets us over 99% of the way through delivering on its expectations.
This book has hit a niche area for word users wanting to create smarter documents with no other book providing coverage of this subject matter as intimately or in a way as easy to follow as this book. It is perfect for people who routinely have to write legal contracts, functional specifications and general technical documentation as it allows you to fully leverage off Word's capabilities in letting you work smarter.
I did not own any other books by Wordware and this seemed to be a bit out there in their list of publications so I was initially a bit hesitant about buying this book. As it turns out I shouldn't have been! Scott Driza presents the subject matter well and in a very succint way - this book has just over 400 pages in which it manages to cover quite a lot of ground!
I bought this book primarily to concentrate on the XML, XSLT and Smart Documents features, but have found that I even picked up a trick or two in relation to VBA-based templates. For those who like using shortcut keys, Appendix A will be a God send as it has the most exhaustive list of Word commands and shortcut keys I have ever seen!
The book devotes approximately half of its pages to VBA and assumes no prior knowledge of VBA, XML, XSLT or Smart Documents. It doesn't cover all subject areas exhaustively but it gets you started and tells you where to get additional materials.
I would have liked to have seen a bit more detail on XML schemas although the the book does show you how to get Word to automatically generate an inferred schema based on XML mark-up. That is pretty much the only reason why I didn't give it a 5-star rating.
If you are an IT professional, engineer, lawyer, technical writer or any other type of knowledge worker; do yourself a favour - stop creating your documents the hard way and buy this book. It will more than pay for itself the first time you start applying the concepts, techniques and technologies it refers to.
