Not good.......2001-10-26
Frankly, I'm embarassed for the authors. I have the second edition, and it is rife with errors. It just illustrates what a PhD is worth these days. I held out hope that the enclosed CD would have a spreadsheet of value (as it implies in the text) but all that is included is the book in PDF format. Thanks guys, that's helpful! Your next book should be titled "How to lie on the cover about the contents".
I just don't know at whom they are targeting this book. Too basic for anyone in finance with a semester of accounting under his/her belt, maybe it's for kids in high school in Junior Achievement? People running Kool Aide stands?
I think we all know the market -- their students who are hosed into buying it. Click another link to get away from this book as fast as you can, so my suffering is for a purpose.
almost worthless.......2000-09-26
This book is practically useless for anybody who actually needs to do financial analysis and forecasting at work. 90% of us use spreadsheets for financial analysis and forecasting, and we end up working with complex spreadsheets which tie everything from complex sales forecasts to income statements to balance sheets to cash flow projections. I am still looking for an appropriate book and/or spreadsheet add-ons that will allow me to do this. I have been searching in vain for such a program and/or book. Does anybody know?
Could be useful for beginners in financial analysis.......2000-08-03
The section on spreadsheet is terribly outdated - obsolete even. It's pretty much like a basic reference for financial modelling but does not really provide the step by step approach to the topic. Sorry but I don't think you will find useful tips on financial forecasting here.
Decent reference for practical financial analysis techniques.......1999-03-24
This book is useful for looking up not just formulas but valuation methodologies in a hurry. However most of the techniques, though illustrated well, do not go very deep. This book is probably good for beginners in finance. Experienced readers may be served better by other publications. All in all, I found this text useful as a quick and easy "boiled down" reference guide for models, formulas and valuation techniques.
A a good book which needs to be updated.......1998-08-15
This is a good book which contains financial formulas and many examples of business analysis. The chapter on spreedsheets is badly outdated. This detracts from the book because business analysis is now all about spreadsheets. The short chapter on outdated financial programs detracts from the book. Their are other, better, books now available.
To be fair, the book covers a very complete collect of business analysis precedures and still is a good reference.

Book Description
This book is the culmination of over twenty years of work toward a pedagogical theory that promotes experiential learning of model-laden theory and inquiry in science. It is primarily intended for researchers and graduate students in science education, and it may serve as a major reference for in-service and pre-service science teachers.
The book focuses as much on course content as on instruction and learning methodology, and presents practical aspects that have repeatedly demonstrated their value in fostering meaningful and equitable learning of physics and other science courses at the secondary school and college levels.
The author shows how a scientific theory that is the object of a given science course can be organized around a limited set of basic models. Special tools are introduced, including modeling schemata, for students to meaningfully construct models and required conceptions, and for teachers to efficiently plan instruction and assess and regulate student learning and teaching practice. A scientific model is conceived to represent a particular pattern in the structure or behavior of physical realities and to explore and reify the pattern in specific ways. The author further shows how to engage students in modeling activities through structured learning cycles.

Book Description
While several books on simulation exist for engineers, this is the first book of its kind suitable for use by mathematicians. It covers differential equations with time (transport) delays in detail as well as problems with hysteresis. Uses the differential automaton model of hysteresis, which is an approach quite different from the well-known classical approach.
Volume 2 provides an introduction to a very broad class of mathematical model-building techniques and illustrates how these models can be simulated using CTMS (Continuous-Time Model Simulation) embedded into an existing procedural programming language, Turbo Pascal. This simulation package, CTMS/TP, is simple, accurate, interactive, user-friendly and is IBM-PC compatible. It requires a hard disk with a minimum of two megabytes of free storage space, Turbo Pascal 7.0, DOS 3.0 or a higher release and a minimum of 512 Kbytes of RAM. A 3 1/2" diskette with the CTMS/TP simulation software is enclosed with the book. Replacement diskettes in the

Customer Reviews:
Great book for applied researchers.......2001-01-07
If you want a useful book on modern ANOVA and regression methods, this is an excellent choice. The book begins with some technical background on robust techniques and then focuses on how commonly encountered problems can be addressed. Included are two-way and three-way designs, split-plot designs, a variety of robust regression methods plus some recently developed exploratory tools. The book also contains a description of s-plus functions that can be used to implement the methods covered. The s-plus functions used can be downloaded for free. S-plus is easy to use and learn and I make use of these functions on a regular basis. If you are more interested in theory than applied work, other books, such as Staudte and Sheather, or Huber, or Hampel et al. will be more interesting. But for applied work, this is the only book I've read that covers many experimental designs that are typically encountered in practice. Even some modern advances related to least squares are covered and can make a substantial difference in accuracy as well as the conclusions reached.
Not an S-PLUS user? Go elsewhere-.......2000-10-31
Dr. Wilcox apparently works copiously but unaccompanied (36 of the book's technical references attribute sole authorship to him). With all due respect to the author, lack of collaboration can be detrimental to what was intended to be a basic technical treatise - and this may be one of those occasions. The author notes (p. 11) "We stress, however, that many mathematical details arise that are not discussed here. The goal is to provide an indication of how technical issues are addressed without worrying about the many relevant details." Indeed, the reader may find this concentration of effort a bit contrary with the introductory nature implied by the book's title. This impression is reinforced by a subject index perhaps too terse for an introductory or reference textbook (being only 3 pages of regularly-sized font, while a less-useful "author index" takes up almost 4 pages).
For the most part, this lean 296 page book is not so much an "Introduction to Robust Estimation" as it is a tutorial or user's manual for numerous S-PLUS functions relevant to the subject matter. If the reader is not heavily invested in S-PLUS (S-PLUS being a high-level computer language and interactive analysis environment trademarked by MathSoft, Inc.), he can never fully appreciate the contents of this title. For example, in the discussion of median variance (p. 42), the author notes that this estimator is related to the beta distribution, but does not acknowledge that there are several related functions that can take this name (such as the incomplete beta distribution, as well as its ratio). Instead, an S-PLUS function 'pbeta' defines what was meant. One must therefore resort to cited third-party references or a computer to really grasp the basics in these situations (in this case only to discover the terminology was inaccurate). A fundamental reliance on propriety software packages and professional journal articles for basic instruction and accuracy is a characteristic unbecoming of an "introductory" textbook, in my opinion.
Often, software manuals tied to specific libraries or languages become dated. I liked the fact that the companion software was downloadable, rather than provided on a medium that might be incompatible with the user's operating system, such as a 5 1/4" disk (the link in the textbook has been updated to www.apnet.com/updates/ireht.htm). For an S-PLUS owner already familiar with robust statistics, this book would probably rate higher. However, of the four textbooks I currently own on this subject, I regret to say that this title only sees infrequent use. A better alternative for emphasizing basic concepts and theory is "Robust Estimation and Testing" by Staudte & Sheather (ISBN 0471855472).

Book Description
External representations (pictures, diagrams, graphs, concrete models) have always been valuable tools for the science teacher. The formation of personal, internal, representations – visualizations – from them plays a key role in all learning, especially in that of science. The use of personal computers and sophisticated software has expanded into the areas of simulation, virtual reality, and animation, and students now engage in the creation of models, a key aspect of scientific methodology. Several academic disciplines underlie these developments, yet act independently of each other, to the detriment of an attainment of what is possible. This book brings together the insights of practicing scientists, science education researchers, computer specialists, and cognitive scientists, to produce a coherent overview. It links presentations about the cognitive theory of representation and visualization, its implications for science curriculum design, and for learning and teaching in classrooms and laboratories.
