Book Description
As featured in Elle, Bust, the Boston Globe, the New York Times and on "Today," "Good Morning America," and the Oxygen television network
In this groundbreaking book, top executive coach and bestselling author Jean Hollands explains how being a "Bully Broad" is not the way to business success for women. Tough, assertive, authoritative, often intimidating, Bully Broads were once the driving forces behind some of this era's most successful companies. Unfortunately, Hollands explains, these same qualities that propelled women up the corporate ladder can ruin them in today's relationship-building, teamwork-oriented corporate culture.
Drawing upon her 20 years of experience coaching thousands of executives at many top companies, Holland's Same Game, Different Rules includes 25 rules that help women pass through, or completely avoid, the Bully Broad stage without compromising their goals or sacrificing their hard-won power and success.

Stop bowing to the stereotypes - and CHANGE THE RULES!.......2004-02-02
Although Hollands book may move some women's careers forward, she is also setting back most women in all fields a few dozen years! Equal opportunity for women is still a long way off. Each time a woman succumbs to theories like Hollands' ''bully broads,'' she not only halts progress, she takes a giant step into the past. The challenge is to speak out about gender discrimination, not bow to it. The challenge is to rid the workplace of stereotypes -- not pay homage to them. Until we do, executive women will still be called "bully broads," while men are applauded for their aggressive, take-charge business style! (Marion E. Gold is author of "Personal Publicity Planner: A Guide to Marketing YOU," and "TOP COPS: Profiles of Women in Command."

Less Iron Fist, Stiletto Tongue, Sneering Glare, and Iciness.......2001-11-06
Imagine a woman who is no nonsense, aggressive, bright, extremely capable, hard-working, very focused, and willing to take charge who is the top performer in her organization. Sounds like a future CEO, doesn't she? Jean Hollands predicts that this is a woman who will rise near the top of her organization, but will then hit the glass ceiling so hard she may be shattered. Such women are usually referred for coaching (if they haven't already been fired) to make them less like bullies. "No one likes a bully. Even so, in today's business climate, many men can get away with it. Women almost never can."
Ms. Hollands reports that she knows the type well. "I'm from a long line of Bully Broads." Although that term may sound pejorative, Ms. Hollands reports that everyone knows what it means and it avoids using other "B" words that are more pejorative.
While the men that she coaches are sent for a variety of weaknesses, 95 percent of the women are there to get rid of Bully Broad characteristics.
There are a number of different types of Bully Broads, including Sounding-Off Tyrants (who verbally blow up a lot), Sarcastic Aggressives (who use words to cut others down to the floor), Selectively Quiet but with High Expectations (perfectionists who let their disapproval of others' performance show), and Silent, But Judging (Ms. Understood, and whose reserve and mental point-scoring is seen as disdain or worse). The book has a quiz to help identify if you have any of these problems. Bully Broads seem to be immune to realizing they have a problem until it is too late because they don't measure themselves very much by what others think of them. Basically, these are people with low emotional intelligence, the attribute that most equates to success in typical business situations.
The heart of the book can be found in the cases (usually two per rule) that show how a variety of women in many different kinds of jobs and organizations walked the plank without realizing they had a problem. Each rule then goes on to suggest ways to change (even if you only have the problem slightly), how to deal with a colleague or boss who has these characteristics, and specific suggestions for how to communicate better. Many of the 25 rules will seem obvious, but apparently they aren't to some successful women, such as "Don't Tick Off the President, the CEO, or the Human Resources Person."
I won't list all of the rules (space doesn't permit, and that wouldn't be fair to the author), but let me give you a few examples to help provide a flavor for the book:
"`Listen Up' Until You Are About to Throw Up"
"People Will Sabotage You If They Can't Confront You"
"Beware of Jealousy"
"Don't Burn Bridges -- Ever"
"Soft Sell Is the Best Sell"
"Remember: It's Not Your Money"
"Avoid All or Nothing Thinking"
"You Are Not Joan of Arc."
The messages are strong, because many women who need them apparently are in denial. For example, I was fascinated by one story about a woman who was fired and didn't emotionally realize it until about two years later since she continued to work out of her old office as a "consultant" to the company, and kept up her old ways.
The irony of many of these stories is that the woman involved often has a CEO or boss who sets a bad example as a bully or polishes his image by letting the Bully Broad do the dirty work of carving people up for his benefit (the old "good cop, bad cop" routine).
The main weakness of the book is that it's aimed at helping a small percentage of women improve their career prospects. The bulk of the potential readers will be victims of Bully Broads who need protection. If you are either a Bully Broad or a Bully Broad victim, this book can really help.
On the other hand, I hope that many human resources people will read this book as well so that their company can help head off bullying situations, whether they are caused by women or (more frequently) by men.
How many things can be accomplished faster and better by having more than one person cooperate with one another? Almost everything. Find ways to make that cooperation smoother, more pleasant, and more effective for all involved!
Be the leader you would like to have!

Personal Finance Ideas For The Wealthy.......2004-10-05
"Rich In America: Secrets To Creating and Preserving Wealth" by Jeffrey S. Maurer studies clients of U.S. Trust to learn about wealthy Americans.
"Rich In America" focuses upon the top 1% of Americans based upon net worth ($3.75 million) or income ($300,000 per year).
We learn that about a third of these wealthy people earned their money through lucrative corporate jobs; about a third earned their money through private businesses; and about a third earned their money from professional practices.
Most of the affluent attributed their financial success to hard work. Time was also a factor. Only 7% worked ten years or less to obtain their financial status, while the average time worked to obtain their status was 21 years. About a quarter of the wealthy needed 30 years to attain their success. Today, the average, wealthy person still works 48 hours per week. So, I guess, the first "secret" to creating wealth is to work hard for a long time.
Most respondents said they felt they gave up time with family, friends, and hobbies to obtain their current financial success. We also learn other interesting statistics, such as 7.1 million households (6.6% of the population) have a net worth above $1 million. And, throughout the last 20 years, the largest gains in income and wealth have predominantly gone to the richest 1% of the population.
Maurer points out that creating wealth and preserving it are two different things. He writes: "There is an old saying: Concentrate to become rich, and diversify to remain rich."
While Maurer argues that saving (the average respondent saved 23% of his/her income) and compounding help build wealth, he says "...you can forget the notion that investing alone will make you wealthy. ... All those books that say you can make millions in real estate or the stock market overnight are not accurate, but you probably knew that already."
"Rich In America" goes on to argue against simple buy-and-hold investing (which I like). He says you need professional financial advisors today. He also argues that a private banker is nice. At this point, for awhile, the book reads like a promotion for the financial planning services industry, with a special focus on the advantages of U.S. Trust.
Maurer likes hedge funds. (Incidentally, if you read the current 2004 issue of Forbes, which features the richest 400 people, there is a good demonstration of just how rich many hedge fund managers are. Partially due to the excessive fees, I'd argue hedge funds should be avoided by the average investor, even the average, wealthy investor.)
After the promotional digression, the book returns to surveying core topics, such as:
-Taxes ("Do not let the tax tail wag the investment dog[,]" writes Maurer.
-AMT
-Estimated Tax Payments (with which nearly every businessperson quickly becomes familiar)
-Stock Options
-Insurance
-Retirement Planning
-Estate Planning
"Rich In America" does a good job covering some topics not covered in basic financial planning books--topics wealthy people might find especially interesting. For example, in addition to learning the basics of life insurance, we learn about directors' insurance (in case you're on a board of directors) and kidnap insurance (before taking that trip to scenic Baghdad). We also learn that U.S. Trust typically recommends at least $10 million in liability insurance for its clients worth more than $5 million dollars. We learn about starting your own foundation.
My favorite section of "Rich In America" deals with concentrated stock positions and how to diversify such a position. Topics covered include:
-Zero-Premium Equity Collars (huh?)
-Varying Forward Contract (You agree to deliver some of your shares in the future and you receive cash today, locking in some present value, which sounds like it could have been handy if you have billions of dollars in hot IPO Internet stock headed for a correction. There is no discussion about how this relates to restricted IPO stock, where you're locked in from selling before a certain date.)
-Tax-Efficient Diversification through Indexing and Loss Harvesting (You start off with your concentrated stock, you wind up with a diversified portfolio, and apparently no capital gains taxes are due. Sounds like a tax evasion scheme to me. Before I'd try something like this, I'd find out what the IRS says about it!)
-Charitable Remainder Unitrust (CRUT. You probably never knew you needed one.)
Of course, if you think one of these is handy, you need professional advice. But, I'd be careful. Don't assume that just because a plan is pushed by a big, respected firm that it's deemed OK by the IRS. PBS Frontline had a nice feature about tax shelters (search google for "tax shelters Frontline" and you'll probably find it), where entrepreneurs who sold firms for millions and who should have paid millions in capital gains taxes were sold tax shelters by KPMG where apparently no capital gains tax was due. The IRS disagreed. It was kind of humorous watching these entrepreneurs whine and say they trusted the big firm.
As Maurer writes: "There are many truisms to live by in the world of investing. Probably the most important is simply to be sensible. Anything that seems too good to be true probably is. There are no real shortcuts. When some salesperson appears on television and promises that he or she can quadruple any investment in 30 days, the only person whose wealth is truly going to quadruple is that of the salesperson."
Overall, "Rich In America: Secrets To Creating and Preserving Wealth" is an informative book that helps us understand many aspects of financial planning as they relate to the affluent.
Peter Hupalo,
Author of
"Becoming An Investor"
Enlightening Book On Wealthy Americans.......2004-06-04
Maurer, provides basic information on seven topics: financial and estate planning, investing, retirement, insurance, taxes, and how to choose a financial advisor. The author presents the material in a logical, clearly written manner, and uses exhibits, as needed, to explain key financial concepts. Also included in various chapters are key findings of the U.S. Trust Survey of Affluent Americans. The survey focused on individuals with gross income of $300,000 and a net worth of $3.75 million. You will find the survey findings to be eye opening. The appendix contains a sample of nine financial planning schedules.
The author indicates that the purpose of investing is to protect your wealth against inflation, and to preserve these invested assets. Mastering the investment scene is not easy, and it takes years of studying, perseverance and a non-emotional approach. Most individuals do not have sufficient time or skill to devote to their financial affairs. Therefore, they should try to find a knowledgeable and TRUSTWORTHY advisor who can work with them to manage their wealth. Having an advisor is especially important in the difficult periodic down markets, assuming the advisor knows how to protect your portfolio.
Maurer points out that an investor parking his/her funds in cash and not investing the funds is being too conservative and thus earning less than the rate of inflation. Therefore, he suggests an investing plan be developed, tracked, and revised as necessary.
As in any field of endeavor, knowledge is power. Without knowing the basics of the topics covered in this book, a person would be at a potential disadvantage, education-wise, in dealing with an advisor. After reading this book, you will be able to more intelligently work with an advisor and understand how a successful relationship is supposed to work.
Any affluent individual should read this book before hiring a financial advisor/planner. It provides down-to-earth, practical information that will be useful when discussing your personal financial situation, goals, and needs with potential advisors.
The man knows whereof he speaks.......2003-11-18
What impressed me most about this book is how directly useful and applicable it is, and not just for people who have bags and bags of money. Clearly, Mr. Maurer has a lifetime of experience working with very rich people and families whose affairs are very complex. But, if you have any significant property of any kind, the odds are that you fall into the same basket as many others--paying insufficient attention to making sure it works for you and that it gets into the hands you want (e.g., family and friends) rather than the hands you don't want (e.g., Uncle Sam and probate attorneys). This book feels like it's written by an expert, but written for everyone in this situation. I think it's first rate.
Rich in America by Maurer.......2003-10-02
This work is replete with comparative statistics on how the
wealthy obtained their position in life. The author makes a
point of the fact that only 4% of the wealthy come from a
preferred social class. The remainder earned their wealth
through hard work and sensible investments. Portfolios
should have both balance and diversity. Investors should not
get too greedy. Lastly, an estate needs to preserve wealth
through careful planning. This book is aimed at investors
who are self-employed or earn a living through a private
employer. The presentation would be helpful for anyone
crafting a personal financial plan for the intermediate to
long term future.
It's About Time.......2003-09-16
Finally, a book that speaks the truth about building real wealth and financial independence. It takes time (a lifetime even), discipline, and hard work to not only become wealthy, but hang onto hard-earned assets for your retirement, your children and your grandchildren. If you're looking for an intelligent, thoughtful read to help you navigate through the complexities of amassing wealth, this is the book. Whether or not you aspire to be rich, the insights on smarter financial planning are important for anyone trying to make the most of their money. And, who better to learn from than someone who spent his career giving financial advice to the rich?
Book Description
Law Enforcement: An Insider's View addresses four major issues: (1) How the police function has evolved; (2) What it takes to become a full-fledged law enforcement officer; (3) On-the-street activities; and (4) Off-the-street issues. The author blends his classroom experience with his law enforcement training to provide the reader with a unique view of the streets through the eyes of a cop and the mind of a professor. This combination lends to an informed view of how things are supposed to be done in theory with how things really get done out in the field.
Traditional topics discussed:
agency organization, personnel recruitment and selection, pre-service training, criminal law, search and seizure, use of force, policy guidelines, stress.
Non-traditional topics discussed:
career preparation, training practices, personal adjustments to sworn status, choosing an appropriate course of action, how organizational mandates affect the job-holder.
William G. Doerner, Ph.D., has been a faculty member in the School of Criminology & Criminal Justice at Florida State University since 1977, as well as serving as a part-time sworn law enforcement officer for the Tallahassee Police Department since 1980. Book Description
Following the Boltzmann-Gibbs approach to statistical mechanics, this new edition of Dr ter Haar's important textbook, Elements of Statistical Mechanics, provides undergraduates and more senior academics with a thorough introduction to the subject. Each chapter is followed by a problem section and detailed bibliography.
The first six chapters of the book provide a thorough introduction to the basic methods of statistical mechanics and indeed the first four may be used as an introductory course in themselves. The last three chapters offer more detail on the equation of state, with special emphasis on the van der Waals gas; the second-quantisation approach to many-body systems, with an examination of two-time temperature-dependent Green functions; phase transitions, including various approximation methods for treating the Ising model, a brief discussion of the exact solution of the two-dimensional square Ising model, and short introductions to renormalisation group methods and the Yang and Lee theory of phase transitions. In the problem section which follows each chapter the reader is asked to complete proofs of basic theory and to apply that theory to various physical situations. Each chapter bibliography includes papers which are of historical interest. A further help to the reader are the solutions to selected problems which appear at the end of the book.
Customer Reviews:
a masterpiece.......2004-03-19
I got know ter Haar from a scientfic article on foundation of statistical mechanics in Review of Modern Physics. This article discussed some important principles of Statistical Mechanics in quantum mechanics after Boltzman, Gibbs and Erenfest's study in classical mechanics. The book is in the reference. It provides the basis of his discussion. I can not compare the greatness of ter Haar and the above 3 masters in physics, but I'm sure he is also a excellent physicist. His dealed with the problems in Statistical Mechanics in a lucid but rigorous way. It is not easy to do this for common people, but he did because he really "understood" physics. Furthermore, this book covered a very wide range of things, not only the techniques for calculation which can find in every textbook of S-M, but also the essential of S-M, its beauty, strength and problems which I think as the spirit of physics. Not every book can do this.
Book Description
This concise introduction to the key concepts and tools of modern statistical mechanics is self-contained. Combining analytical and numerical techniques, it also covers advanced topics such as non-relativistic quantum field theory. After introducing classical analytical techniques, the authors present important numerical methods and a diverse range of applications. Quantum statistical mechanics is then analyzed and applied to topics in astrophysics and cosmology. Combining the authors' many years' experience of teaching courses in this area, this textbook is ideal for advanced students in physics, chemistry and mathematics.
Book Description
This concise, elementary treatment illustrates the ways in which an atomic-molecular perspective yields new insights into macroscopic thermodynamics. Starting with an analysis of some very simple microcanonical ensembles, it proceeds to the Boltzmann distribution law and a systematic exploration of the proper formulation, evaluation, and application of partition functions. 1974 edition.
Customer Reviews:
this old book the best elementary introduction to statistical mechanics.......2007-03-05
This is a wonderful introduction to statistical mechanics, especially for chemistry students taking undergraduate physical chemistry. Leonard K. Nash was a Harvard professor of chemistry whose primary interest became chemical education and the history of chemistry. This book was a classic in the 1960's, but later went out of print. Dover has done a real service in reissuing it. The book is remarkable for its lucidity and pedagogical clarity. It's the best introduction I know to the very difficult subject, especially for beginners, of statistical mechanics. For starters, it gives a wonderfully insightful look at the meaning of the statistics of the statistical ensembles.
This book puts most of the current physical chemistry textbooks to shame in its treatment of the subject. It could serve as a stand-alone text for the statistical mechanics part of a physical chemistry sequence.
If you are taking this course, you owe it to yourself to get this book. The price cannot be beat.
I also recommend the companion book by Nash on macroscopic thermodynamics, together with Fermi's classic text (also available from Dover).
At a more elementary level, Dover has re-issued Bruce Mahan's famous thermodynamics book. I believe he used this for advanced freshmen at Berkeley. If you are having trouble with thermodynamics in physical chemistry, even at the Fermi or Nash level, do yourself a favor and get Mahan's book. Even if you're not having trouble, you may very well find it helpful.

Book Description
This volume aims to disseminate a number of new ideas that have emerged in the last few years in the field of numerical simulation, all bearing the common denominator of the "multiscale" or "multilevel" paradigm. This covers the presence of multiple relevant "scales" in a physical phenomenon; the detection and representation of "structures", localized in space or in frequency, in the solution of a mathematical model; the decomposition of a function into "details" that can be organized and accessed in decreasing order of importance; and the iterative solution of systems of linear algebraic equations using "multilevel" decompositions of finite dimensional spaces.

Book Description
The book is devoted to the application of phase-field (diffuse interface) models in materials science. Phase-field modeling emerged only recently as a theoretical approach to tackle questions concerning the evolution of materials microstructure, the relation between microstructure and materials properties and the transformation and evolution of different phases. This volume brings together the essential thermodynamic ideas as well as the essential mathematical tools to derive phase-field model equations. Starting from an elementary level such that any graduate student familiar with the basic concepts of partial differential equations can follow, it shows how advances in the field of phase-field modeling will come from a combination of thermodynamic, mathematical and computational tools. Also included are two extensive examples of the application of phase-field models in materials science.
Book Description
This melodrama takes place on the Riviera and is a sequel to "The Mystery of the Yellow Room". Five 90-minute cassettes and two 60's.
Customer Reviews:
A fitting follow-up to "The Mystery of the Yellow Room"........1999-04-08
If you enjoyed "The Mystery of the Yellow Room", you will probably enjoy "The Perfume of the Lady in Black". This novel was very well written by Gaston Leroux (who actually included himself as a character in the early pages of the book!). You must read "The Mystery of the Yellow Room" before attempting "The Perfume of the Lady in Black", as it is merely a continuation of the events from "Yellow Room". To say that Gaston Leroux has a few surprises in store for you with this book would be an understatement, as he gives new meanings to the events from the first book. For me to say anyting further would be unfair to a prospective reader. While "The Mystery of the Yellow Room" was a five star book without question, "The Perfume of the Lady in Black" falls just short of that lofty plateau. For those who enjoy a well-written mystery, you could scarcely do better than Gaston Leroux.
