Customer Reviews:
Incredibly helpful!.......2002-01-24
I was never one to put much stock in so called "self-help" books, but after picking this one up and flipping through it, I realized that I have much to learn! I couldn't put this book down. I found Miss Tracy's ideas to be powerful tools for reshaping my view of work and my role within it. The examples given are useful. The "focus" questions helped me to determine the sources of my problems at work. I credit this book with helping me to completely reverse my view of a previous job. Instead of continuing to bemoan the events and be angry, I was able to see what went wrong (with the job and myself) and finally make peace. I have no doubt that I will refer to this book again and again. I do recommend "Take This Job and Love It!", but warn any persons who tend to proofread that they will have a fine time noticing the scanner errors!
Excellent.......2001-11-06
This book has already changed my life. I saw it on a shelf the other day and after browsing a few pages, found some good stuff. Little did i know that the next day my whole job would be changed around on me, putting me in a total furious crisis. I went back to that book after work at the end of the day, and this morning I now have a lot of new options and creative approaches which may not only save my sanity, but also help me not to back myself into a corner at this typical frustrating kind of job that many have. I'm a very choosy reader, and this book is highly recommended.

Poet's Prose: The Crisis in American Verse (Cambridge Studies in American Literature and Culture)
ASIN: 0810119277 |
Book Description
An original, critical approach to reading texts rendered variously illegible-through erasures, excisions, overprintings, and rearrangements-by major twentieth-century artists and writers.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing Text! Incredible Writing! Brilliant!.......2006-01-19
In this exquisitely legible foray into the poetics of illegibility, Dworkin
takes on such forms of confusion.text, and effacement.text, and complex.text
as overwritten poetry, overprinted poetry, lined-out passages in poem, and
entirely censored poem by Man Ray, and then moving into land art by Smithson
and others in order to finally explore the poetics of illegibility more
broadly. Dworkin is unflaggingly obsessed with the avant-garde, and in talking about such only marginally
comprehensible texts, Dworkin summons his full tool box of
critical.linguistic.textual.analytic tools to do the job. Each lengthly
passage of analysis signifies new ways to read easily dismissable texts. He
has no one reductive argument, no simple insistence that "this stuff represents
our postmodern, muddled lives" or anything so cheap as that. Instead,
Dworkin moves through the various texts he looks at finding them variably meaningful, as
clearly their mechanics are quite different. In the middle of the book lives
what I suspect is one of Dworkin's favorite forms, the diastic poetry of
Cage and Jackson Mac Low. In those poems, the poets "write through" the
cantos of Pound (and others) to produce mechanistic, rule-governed
renderings of the larger text. I say that I think Dworkin likes this
strategy more than others because it works with the available, the flood of
existing text (Humumanent works this way too, of course, as Hayles has
discussed) while doing so within rule-governed methods for creation. He
likes it too, because of the Wakean jingles that result, the random playful
bits of language that result.
This is a book, then, about how to read graffiti on passing trains, about
how to read half-effaced ancient signage, about reading overwritten graffiti
and notes and all of the text that hangs on the bulletin boards of our
lives. It is a text, too, about not overlooking the illegible, the opaque,
the odd and apparently unsignifying. By employing poetics, what does not
clearly produce semantic meaning suddenly does, as the activity of social
and political artists (see the later discussion of Smithson, for instance)
is the activity of such opaque and hard to parse texts. This is poetry as
social, political, engaged, and pushing the envelop of meaning. In a
constellation of relation, there is Drucker, Pound, Joyce, Cage, Smithson,
all the other overwriting and illegible.fetishizing poets, and then there is
Dworkin pulling it all together, keeping it all separate, and ultimately
currating a fiasco of textual innovation.
This
is a map of the innovative, the poetic, the academic, and the original. So,
this is the map.

Book Description
Coal Combustion Byproducts and Environmental Issues addresses the major implications and critical issues surrounding coal combustion products and their impact upon the environment. It provides essential information for scientists conducting research on coal and coal combustion products, but also serves as a valuable reference for a wide variety of researchers and other professionals in the energy industry and in the fields of public health, engineering, and environmental sciences. The ultimate goal of this volume is to benefit both our economy and our environment as humanity enters the second half of the fossil fuel era.
Book Description
In this new edition, Arthur Fine looks at Einstein's philosophy of science and develops his own views on realism. A new Afterword discusses the reaction to Fine's own theory.
"What really led Einstein . . . to renounce the new quantum order? For those interested in this question, this book is compulsory reading."—Harvey R. Brown, American Journal of Physics
"Fine has successfully combined a historical account of Einstein's philosophical views on quantum mechanics and a discussion of some of the philosophical problems associated with the interpretation of quantum theory with a discussion of some of the contemporary questions concerning realism and antirealism. . . . Clear, thoughtful, [and] well-written."—Allan Franklin, Annals of Science
"Attempts, from Einstein's published works and unpublished correspondence, to piece together a coherent picture of 'Einstein realism.' Especially illuminating are the letters between Einstein and fellow realist Schrödinger, as the latter was composing his famous 'Schrödinger-Cat' paper."—Nick Herbert, New Scientist
"Beautifully clear. . . . Fine's analysis is penetrating, his own results original and important. . . . The book is a splendid combination of new ways to think about quantum mechanics, about realism, and about Einstein's views of both."—Nancy Cartwright, Isis
Customer Reviews:
Realism is dead! Long live realism!.......2005-11-28
Successive revolutionary developments in science have occasioned successive deaths, transformations, and revivals of realism, as firstly scientists and later laymen learn to see reality as new science describes it. In Concept of the Positron Hanson portrayed the reluctant acceptance of each successive theory's ontology as a progression from opaque black box to translucent gray box to transparent glass box. Such reflection on the history of science has yielded the contemporary pragmatist scientific realism, a realism that subordinates ontological claims to empirical criticism. But in his Shaky Game Fine says that realism is dead, and he advocates an alternative, his "natural ontological attitude" (NOA), which he calls a nonrealist commonsense epistemology (p.130).
Heisenberg practiced scientific realism, when he imitated Einstein's realism in relativity theory beyond Einstein's gratuitous ontological constraints. But in his chapter "Is Scientific Realism Compatible with Quantum Physics?" Fine creates several realist interpretations by supplementing the quantum theory with correspondence characterizations not affirmed by the theory, which he says are needed by even a minimal realism. But Fine's minimal realism is not minimal, because these correspondences are added to and separable from the quantum theory itself. They enable no new empirical tests or new predictions, and thus no empirically warranted ontological claims.
Today's pragmatic scientific realism is the thesis that a theory's ontology is described by the semantics defined by the context of universal discourse accepted as empirically warranted. This warranting language includes the empirically tested and nonfalsified theory and all its test-design language needed for measurement and/or other observation. It is otherwise silent, neither affirming nor denying additional ontological claims, although over time continuing experimental research will likely further enrich the theory's descriptive semantics and ontology. Excellent discussion of myths and realities of QM........2001-04-16
Put simply, Professor Fine knows what he's talking about. Written at a level which is understandable to the lay reader with a minimum of scientific background, but with attention to detail that excludes any trite simplification, the Shaky Game details Einstein's work on and objections to the quantum theory as it was hammered together (mostly by the likes of Heisenberg et al in Copenhagen) during the 1920s.
Many misconceptions exist: such that Einstein was simply too old (in his 40s) at the time that these brilliant new thinkers (in their late 20s and 30s) were bringing together QM. Never mind that Einstein actually laid the groundwork for the theory in the 1910s and earlier, as well as working well into his golden years, Fine presents many other objections, mostly from Einstein's unpublished correspondance with other notable figures of the day.
Fine also presents his and several other alternate interpretations designed to circumvent the various snags that QM invariably encounters, all with some degree of success. All in all, its a good read, and solid physics too, which is an important and all too often forgotten aspect of physics philosophy.
