An opening chapter gives an overview of today's IT job market with projections through the year 2010, current top job opportunities, and a discussion of new and evolving IT employment opportunities. A following chapter discusses the job-winning process, with advice on résumé writing and distribution, getting interviews, and landing a position. The remaining chapters describe the needed IT skill requirements, advise on developing a job-finding strategy, explain how to assess one's own skills, discuss employment strategies and career planning, and cover virtually every other aspect of IT job hunting. The book concludes with 30 sample résumés for today's leading information technology job opportunities.
Customer Reviews:
Informative but very misleading..........2006-03-03
-The title of the book say's " Computer Science Resumes and Job-Finding Guide" but it also says, " A winning approach for information technology job candidate." Correct me if I'm wrong, but Computer Science should not be confused with IT. Computer Science deals with R&D, Inventions, and Development; while IT usually involved in the context of a BUSINESS and is often used to automate manual task...WITIHIN AN ORGANIZATION.
-Primary Skills Requirements(based on 2004) mentioned on page 3, contradicts page 31 listings of today's top IT Jobs.

Helpful Enough.......2004-05-03
This book would be great for both high schoolers and college students alike. It also has usefulness to adults looking to change career fields and discover what occupations are within each broader category. The book is broken down alphabetically by major, and devotes about 2-3 pages per major. All of the large majors are covered, along with some more emerging fields of study. For each major the author tell you the typical subjects you might study, the typical occupations associated with the major, and some of the qualities you need to have to find success in the field. There is also a section that tells you what the people commonly found in the field enjoy as leisure activities. For instance, people who are interested in volunteer activities and helping out at senior centers might be suited to social work. If you are drawn to law you may find leisure in debates and reading law reviews in your spare time. I thought this was the best way to use the book actually - to look at my leisure interests and match them to the right field of study (I found 3 fields). There is also a self-assessment section and a listing of organizations associated with each major. The author also lists the main reasons why someone who enter the field, and it is a good way to see if your values match the major. I found the book helpful overall and would recommend it for someone who is uncertain of what to major in or what fields to pursue.
Too brief to be useful.......2001-09-26
If I had flipped through this book first, I wouldn't have bought it. For each major the author gives a one-paragraph description, a list of related occupations, a list of skills necessary and a list of "values and attributes", and other related information such as related extra curricular activities. There is a glossary at the end of the book to further explain the cryptic words in the occupations, skills and values list with 2 to 3-line sentences. For example, in describing "Marketing and Distribution", the "value and attribute" list is: achievement, prestige, wealth, desire for recognition and appreciation from others, creatitivy, outgoing, polite and friendly attitude, desire to serve and please others, tendency to be alert and ambitious, competitiveness and flexibility, energy, patience, poise, neatness, and self confidence.
As you can see, the content is extremely brief and most of it is just common sense.
The way that majors are listed is also not quite complete and logical (arranged alphebatically).
For a much better reading, I recommend "The College Majors Handbook : The Actual Jobs, Earnings, and Trends for Graduates of 60 College Majors", ISBN 1563705184. It has much better narative descriptions.
An excellent resource for the college bound........2000-08-17
This book is packed full of information - I wish I could have benefited from it years ago, before attending college. It categorizes by field, gives a description, then lists numerous related occupations and training required for each. Additionally, it includes related activities, skills, organizations, etc. Salary information is not included -which, in my opinion, makes it an even more effective resource for finding ones genuine career interests.

Book Description
"For too long, the labor movement and philanthropic foundations have had little contact, even when their guiding principles are the same. The time is ripe for a new national conversation on where and how they can effectively work together. Richard Magat's new book focuses on the relationship between unions and foundations--its history, its dynamics, and its potential. This is a relationship that can and should be enormously valuable for both sides."--John J. Sweeney, President, AFL-CIO
An investigation into the little-known history of relations between organized labor and philanthropic foundations in America, this book reveals curious connections linking these important institutions throughout the twentieth century. Richard Magat examines these relations--whether indirect or direct, confrontational, supportive, or collaborative--in a wide variety of areas: research, the condition and status of black and female workers, the struggle of farmworkers, workplace health and safety, the union democracy movement, and the stake of union members in the global marketplace.
Unlikely Partners begins with the industrial and social ferment in which the great modern foundations arose in the early twentieth century. It covers such topics as the Russell Sage Foundation (the first to address labor conditions), the National Civic Federation, and manifestations of "enlightened" business practice, including welfare capitalism. The book lays out areas of future community, fiscal, and policy collaboration between unions and foundations.

My "how to be girly" bible.......2007-06-19
I realize that for all intents and purposes, this book was written as a tongue in cheek look at the life of a self made somebody in the celebrity spotlight. But Dianne made her way there, unlike some celebutants we know, and she tells you how you can either do the same, or simply celebrate your flirty, sex-kittenish self in this book.
Having grown up with a tom-boy for a mother, buying this books saved me from an eternity of boxy jeans, unibrow and an unending loathing of my breasts. Sure there's a lot about the tips in this book that are not exactly helpful to the average young lady about town. But if you dig a little deeper, you'll find a stronger message, and it's about owning who you are and being proud to be a feminine, sensual individual.
Also, I have to say... while it sounds silly to take six hours to dress, she's got a major point to this technique. Working in the film industry, I've had a few swanky parties to go to and keeping her tips in mind when planning the "getting ready" part of the day, keeps me from looking like Mrs. Sweaty Tomato Head.
Have fun, flirt, be girly and celebrate yourself ladies. And if you buy this book for no other reason, buy it because it simply gives you official permission to do so!

Good, but "Cannabis Alchemy" is better........2001-05-26
This book and D Gold's "Cannabis Alchemy" describe basically the same proccesses, but "Cannabis Alchemy" has better illustrations, more information, and more lucid prose.
AN EXCELLENT WEALTH OF INFORMATION, BUT.............2000-12-30
There are many people who have been very critical of this book. This is completely undeserved. This book deals with the process of turning regular everyday herb into both hash oil and hashish with cartoons and easy to understand 'baby' directions.
The method described in this book really works! It can help you take any plain Mary Jane (both high grade sativa and low grade kack) and create some very potent hash oil and hash (increasing in potency by 6 to 12 times on the Adam scale from what you started with).
...Dr. Atomic has a really useful and easy to follow cartoon drawing which uses kitchen utensils like a wok and soup pot... I would like to point out however that this book only deals with part of the process described in Cannabis Alchemy. It covers the chapters on making hash oil that is either (a) a crude extract or (b) a purified isomerized extract. From this you can also make hash - Dr. atomic breaks Gold's seven recipes down to four simple ones). Dr. Atomic does not bother describing the acetate process mentioned in Cannabis Alchemy. This is a disappointment but understandable... For some really incredible smoke expect about 25-30 hours of pretty well continuous work. The benefits are the increase in potency, far less toxins ingested and some incredible bragging rights :)
If you like cartoons........2000-08-25
Do not buy this book! The subject is hashish oil, and thats fine. And you could problaby produce some fine oil you read this book. But it seems the writer has read "Cannabis alchemy.." By D. Gold, and then made into a cartoon. There is so little information in the book, and insted the writer has filled the book with pictures of a mad sicentist.
If you want to make hashish oil then buy "cannabis alchemy". Here you will find many details and a lot les junk!
Greatest Book EVER!.......2000-03-24
This book is a very explicit review to growing marijuana. This book is very useful and i recommend it to anyone and everyone who is interested in this, keep in mind this is illegal in the United States. If you want to learn how to grow, this is the book for you! This book focuses on indoor growing however it includes outdoor growing as well. This book is the best for "all around" growing. With this book you can learn to grow with Quality and QUANTITY!

An excellent overview of TSR's art.......2000-05-07
The Worlds of TSR collects the best paintings from AD&D, XXVc., and several other of TSR's role-playing mileaus in a true tour-de-force of fantasy and science fiction art. All of the images, created by the top artists in the field - Easley, Parkinson, others - are reproduced with perfect clarity and in blazing color. Sadly enough, the only thing that follows each painting is the name of the artist - the reader is thus effectively prevented from either learning the paiting's title or finding in which of TSR's games the art in question was included. However, for the casual gamer or simply an admirer of this style of art the Worlds of TSR will surely be a nice find. One wonders why an update wasn't released.

A concise and useful set of exercises.......2007-09-06
A great introduction to XML.
The example programs and tutorials cover a breadth of topics. The sections are related and continue to build on useful tools and suggested practices.
I would recommend the book to anyone new to XML that wants to rip through some examples and would like to know about dtd and xlst.
Good crash course.......2006-08-23
I knew nothing about XML and needed to come up to speed quickly. This book served that purpose well. It starts with basic theoretical explanations and goes into some technical detail. It did not teach me "everything" I needed to know, but it did a good job of getting me started. I would recommend it for a novice with little to advanced technical background who needs to learn XML.
Already out of date.......2006-04-05
XML is changing at a lightning fast pace, and this 2000 book is already out of date.
Link for updates to book..........2005-11-26
An earlier post provided a link to Wiley that now appears to be outdated. However, I did find the new link on their website. I have not used this product and had to rate it to provide feedback. So, I gave it a neutral so as not so skew the reviews.
[...]
Covers the material pretty well, but sloppy........2005-10-14
Overall this is an decent place to start with XML. It covers what needs to be covered to get you up to speed, and most readers with any technical background could probably could do it at about the pace that the book advertises (15 hours to get up to speed on XML.) Organization and writing are mostly OK.
Hovever, the book is sloppy. It repeats itself in several places. Some editing notes are left in the text. One exercise is presented before giving proper background, so the reader doesn't even know how to do the exercise. Some obvious questions are left unanswered, leaving the reader feeling frustrated. Clearly the book was not 'street tested'.
Overall, if you can forgive the books faults, you are given a good grasp of the key XML concepts. This is par for the course, and so I give it 3 stars. It gives you the knowledge you need, but does so a sloppy way.
Book Description
The Weekend Crash Course series consists of 30 sessions over a period of three days. Each session is designed to take 30 minutes to complete, so the Crash Course is an intense 15-hour learning period beginning on Friday evening and ending on Sunday afternoon. Naturally, you can adapt your learning to whatever schedule best suits your needs.
HTML 4.01 Weekend Crash Course is written to meet the needs of the reader who is new to HTML and new to scripting and mark-up languages. However, through the use of carefully constructed roadmaps at the beginning of each session as well as pre- and post-assessment software on the CD-ROM, the book is also quite accessible to the reader who already has some knowledge of HTML or another scripting language.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2004-10-12
I didn't know what HTML was before this book. Now I can write my own simple webpages. Excellent.
Great Book.......2003-06-26
I have absolutely no knowledge of programming and was able to easily read the material and understand it. The graphics are also great. I would recommend this book to anyone.
Admirable job.......2003-01-29
I do recommend reading "HTML 4.01 Weekend Crash Course" if you already own it. The copy I bought and read is copyright 2000. The title might be changed to something like "HTML and related activities" as it covers considerably more than just HTML. That seems necessary to me. It would be a problem not presenting the other topics. This book does an admirable job of covering that amount of material in the 30 sessions meant to be read during a weekend. There are spots that are a little rough. It hints of being a first edition that would benefit from editing. I would wait for the next version, as there is some dated material that is only going to become more of a problem. Having said that I benefited from having read the book after having taken web design and web programming courses. I recommend reading this book (the new version) to prepare for such courses in order to take better advantage of them.
It did the job.......2002-08-05
This book took me from knowing absolutely nothing about HTML to being able to create a basic web page. It was very clear about using text and basic graphics. The CD-ROM included the code covered in the book as well as .gifs and .jpgs to practice with. After completing this book I was able to move on to more advanced HTML as well as JavaScript with a good understanding of the basics. I would recommend this book to anybody who has no prior knowledge of HTML, although I would suggest they take a little more time than a weekend to learn it.
Good for beginners.......2002-04-14
If you're looking to get up and running with HTML, and have no prior experience, this is a great book. You'll be introduced to the basics with an approach that gives you the confidence to learn web design. Topics are arranged in a sensible order, and the overall tone of the book is straightforward and won't fighten off a beginner by plunging headlong into a lot of jargon. This book is an excellent starting point for anyone interested in learning HTML.
