Great Business Book For The New Age Reader.......2002-06-12
This is a good book for the "New Age" reader. If you are new to mysticism, read this book with an OPEN mind. For those of you that are familiar with mysticism and psychic ability, I think this will be an enjoyable book to read. Although the author considers this a 'business' book, this book focuses mainly on psychic ability and how to put it to work for you in the business environment. I find many of Barrie Dolnick's suggestions useful and have come to realize that more people in business may be practicing psychic power tools than you would think.
Incredible, enlightening and encouraging........1998-06-21
This is a terrific book. I find that I keep it in my briefcase as a primer. I have applied the tools and they have worked like a charm; no pun intended. Really an excellent tool for applying psychic energies into the workplace.
Unintentional hilarity.......1998-05-22
First of all, don't be fooled: This book has nothing whatsoever to do with the much-ballyhooed search for "corporate soul." For a few pages, New York consultant Barrie Dolnick's advice seems very much in line with that of other self-help authors who urge you to be more assertive, dress sharp, and think positive. Sound advice. But she quickly veers off into the realm of the ridiculous; "The Executive Mystic" -- bizarrely, from one of America's leading business publishers -- is practically a survey course of paranormal nuttiness, all aimed at helping corporate ladder-climbers use their "psychic power" to plan more effective meetings, make better hiring decisions, and build more productive teams. Dolnick assures us that the unseen world has much to offer the aspiring junior executive: "There are modern mystics among us," she writes, citing the "keen psychic power" of Bill Gates and Bill Clinton.
Throughout the book, Dolnick cheerily insists that her aims are serious: "this *is* a business book," she writes, "and I'm not going to demand that you meditate." But you'd be better off meditating -- nearly everything else that she recommends borders on the insane. In her catalog of the absurd, Dolnick uses every faddish pseudoscience from graphology to witchcraft to feng shui to astrology, laced with random smatterings of American Indian and eastern philosophies. There's advice here on how to choose the perfect crystals and how to create a "psychic mirror" to ward off curses that people might put on you. There's pure superstition: "I try to avoid doing business when I see a horseshoe hung for bad luck (gap side down)." There are pages and pages of advice on which fabrics and colors to wear for different psychic purposes (avoid polyester and orange), and somehow it all has something to do with your seven "power centers," which get clogged and have to be "cleared" by rubbing them with sea salt.
There are warnings that bad people get what's coming to them: "note Michael Milken's battle with prostate cancer."! And she tells the scary story of a "highly competitive female broadcasting executive" with "a reputation for having no heart" whose child was born with a heart condition. "Coincidence?" Dolnick writes. "Maybe, but not likely." With disarming informality, Dolnick explains how to build a "negativity deflector" ("Wear red or silk undershirts for protection"); how to "conjure" a parking space (send a "clear psychic message"); and how to make an audience "calm, relaxed, and reasonable" (sprinkle some lavender around a room). She advises that you stay away from "dolls, pins, and chicken bones." One priceless passage discusses "our psychic heritage," which is apparently influenced by not only our ancestors but by our past lives -- "if you choose to believe in reincarnation." Get that? If you don't choose to believe, then it's not true.
No book like this would be complete without a few look-ahead stock tips, so there's a section on "executive oracles" -- tarot cards, a favorite book, the "I Ching," playing cards. "Can an oracle be wrong?" she asks. "Yes. Not often, but yes." Those sound like betting odds. And you can trust Dolnick: "One of my talents is in astrology and tarot reading," she writes. "I can recall seeing a layoff in one client's future, and then helping to prevent it." Then there *wasn't* a layoff, right? Some talent.
It's almost unimaginable that someone could be smart and capable enough to reach the executive ranks and then fall for this superstitious hooey. There'll be some, though, and they'll be easy enough to detect: They're the ones trying to be unobtrusive while rubbing sea salt on their foreheads, brandishing smoldering "smudge sticks" made of sage, and muttering incantations while carefully placing crystals about the office. And their red silk undershirts will be peeking out.

If you've ever gone through hard times and felt like the world was standing in judgement, you have a sense of what the people in this book went through losing their farms. I grew up in farmland and have some sense of how fully peoples lives were tied up in their farms. For all those who see the modern economy as cool darwinian survival of the fittest, Dudley offers up a more plausible alternative: failure is often arbitrary or--worse--prompted by poorly thought out policies. The resulting pain of failure for those who experience the judgement is profound because so many see failure and success in moral terms. I'm still mulling the final message--that the unsympathetic judgement of those who get the short end of the economic stick *is* the American way. I can think of some counter-examples, but for the most part it rings true. Curious what others think.

This clearly written, self-contained volume studies the basic equations of kinetic theory in all of space. It contains up-to-date, state-of-the-art treatments of initial-value problems for the major kinetic equations, including the Boltzmann equation (from rarefied gas dynamics) and the Vlasov-Poisson/Vlasov-Maxwell systems (from plasma physics). This is the only existing book to treat Boltzmann-type problems and Vlasov-type problems together. Although these equations describe very different phenomena, they share the same streaming term. The author proves that solutions starting from a given configuration at an initial time exist for all future times by imposing appropriate hypotheses on the initial values in several important cases. He emphasizes those questions that a mathematician would ask first: Is there a solution to this problem? Is it unique? Can it be numerically approximated?

Horrible book.......2007-01-10
Overcomplicated. The entire book. I'm not just talking rigorous... A good example is the two page proof that the number of microstates in n particles, if each can range from 0 to q, whereas the sum of all must add up to q, is n + q - 1 CHOOSE q. This can be proved (just as formally) in about 3 lines, while being much more intuitive!

Not very useful.
That was my first impression of this book. Suppose I had left my review to the three words above. You would have been left with an empty feeling with expectations unfulfilled, wondering if there was more to it than just those words. You'd probably say my review wasn't very helpful.
Well, that about sums up my feelings for this text. Every time I open it for reference, I read a few pages, looking for something that just doesn't seem to be there. I am left with expectations unfulfilled, wondering if I was missing something. I usually put it back on the shelf and move to the next book, thinking "Hmm. That wasn't very helpful."
This book sits in my library next to the Callen text on thermo and stat mech. I also have a copy of Reichl's stat mech text. Between Salinger, Callen, and Reichl, one might begin to get a handle on the subject, but not one of these books is the *definitive* text on the subject. I haven't found that one yet. I would suggest that if one is looking for yet another reference text, put this one in the number 2 or number 3 slot on your list.

This is the best introductory thermo, stat mech book available. Very clear with a nice set of problems.

Recent years have witnessed a resurgence in the kinetic approach to dynamic many-body problems. Modern kinetic theory offers a unifying theoretical framework within which a great variety of seemingly unrelated systems can be explored in a coherent way. Kinetic methods are currently being applied in such areas as the dynamics of colloidal suspensions, granular material flow, electron transport in mesoscopic systems, the calculation of Lyapunov exponents and other properties of classical many-body systems characterised by chaotic behaviour. The present work focuses on Brownian motion, dynamical systems, granular flows, and quantum kinetic theory.

The aim of this book is to give a physical treatment of the kinetic theory of gases and magnetoplasmas, covering the standard material in as simple a way as possible, using mean-free-path arguments when possible and identifying problem areas where received theory has either failed or has fallen short of expectations. Examples are provided by strong shock waves, ultrasonic waves (high Knudsen numbers), and transport across strong magnetic fields. One of the paradoxes arising in kinetic theory concerns the fluid pressure. Collisions are necessary for a fluid force to result, yet standard kinetic theory does not entail this, being satisfied to bypass Newton's equations by defining pressure as a momentum flux. This omission usually has no adverse consequences, but with increasing Knudsen number, it leads to errors. This text pays particular attention to pressure, explaining the importance of allowing for its collisional nature from the outset in developing kinetic theory.

Good companion to Smith's books.......2002-08-20
This is a good reference guide to Cordwainer Smith's various books. Do not expect too much, though. Mostly, what you get is one-sentence definitions of many of the people, places and things in Smith's books, and, in some cases, a brief explanation of where the name comes from. A publication guide to Smith's stories is also included.
While there's an introduction, the book's greatest lack is essays and discussions concerning the works and their author (Paul Linebarger, as Smith was his nom de plume). Comparisons of Smith's stories and the myths he took some of them from would be helpful.
Good, but there's work to do in future editions.
