Book Description

By the time an employee lodges a sexual harassment complaint, it's already too late-too late to prevent the abuse, too late to do anything but try to punish the offender and compensate the victim, and maybe too late to avoid a costly litigation and an even more costly judgment. In The First Line of Defense, two leading organizational psychologists help companies give their employees the tools, skills, and training they need to recognize the early warning signs of potential sexual harassment relationships and defuse these situations before any actual harassment occurs.

In storytelling form, the human side of sexual harassment is presented in a way that everyone can understand. This enlightening guide breaks the harassment experience down into its component parts and:

Based on the authors' innovative training program, recommended to clients by Chubb and Kemper, major national sellers of sexual harassment insurance, and supported by many insurance brokerage firms, including Willis, The Risk Practice, The First Line of Defense is an unparalleled resource for employers in industry and government who must find ways to protect employees at all levels from the pain, humiliation, and trauma of sexual harassment.

Book Description

In recent years there has been an enormous amount of research into the way companies raise finance from stock markets. There are many reasons for this interest in 'initial public offerings' (IPOs): DT the capital-raising function of stock markets is particularly important in financing firms and encouraging entrepreneurship and growth DT the late 1990s witnessed an IPO boom in many countries, with unprecedented numbers of companies going public DT two stylized facts appear to be valid in many countries: IPOs are initially systematically underpriced, often by dramatic amounts, and over the longer term they seem to under-perform other companies. The attempt to explain these phenomena has resulted in a burgeoning theoretical literature DT there is a continuing policy debate over the most appropriate institutional arrangements to enable firms to access the stock market in an efficient manner, including the roles of financial intermediaries, institutional investors, and the rules laid down by stock exchanges DT privatizations are a particular type of IPO, and the world-wide trend towards privatization has raised many questions regarding the most appropriate ways to sell companies to the public. "Going Public" is the first book to investigate the issues in a non-technical manner, drawing upon international evidence from private sector companies and privatizations. Building on the success of the first edition, this second edition of "Going Public" has been comprehensively revised and updated throughout.

4 out of 5 stars a good interpretation of the academic literature.......2000-05-12

Financial economists (academics) have an interesting way of interpreting the world. When it comes to IPOs, what practitioners think and do and what the academics "think" that they do are often different.

This book is a solid contribution for those who what the academic IPO literature interpreted for them. It succeeds admirably at what it does, which is to interpret the findings of a lot of published studies in the finance journals that are hard to wade through unless you are a PhD in economics.

I teach finance to MBAs and this book was an excellent review and synthesis for me and fairly accessible to my MBAs. I understand the book has been updated in '99. That is good, since this topic is still in flux.

This is NOT a "how to" go public book. It is a valuable conpendium of how economists think about IPOs.

2 out of 5 stars Good basic textbook on IPO's.......2000-04-03

If you're lookin for an extensive overview of all the basic theories of IPOs, this is a good book. It's like an "IPOs for Dummies". Focus is a bit too much on Underpricing, however. I missed good overviews of Long Term Underperformance and Hot Issue Markets. Quite old (1996) so a lot of important work is not covered. New version was released 1999.

    Book Description

This new edition follows the successful structure of the first edition bringing together information on a wide range of fermented dairy products. It takes particular account of the profound influence that modern biotechnological sciences are having on the traditional biotechnology of dairy fermentations. For example, the taxonomy of lactic acid bacteria and of dairy pathogenic bacteria has been revolutionized in the past decade by the adoption of molecular biology techniques. Another important feature is the inclusion of a new chapter on the sensory evaluation of dairy flavors. This is a book for dairy scientists and technologists, both industrial and academic, particularly food chemists, dairy microbiologists and biotechnologists. It will also be an essential reference source for those in product development, processing and marketing, as well as regulatory officials in dairy companies and government laboratories.

        Book Description

Throughout the world, milk and milk products are indispensable components of the food chain. Not only do individual consumers use liquid milk for beverages and cooking, but food manufacturers use vast quantities of milk powder, concentrated milks, butter, and cream as raw materials for further processing. Effective quality assurance in the dairy industry is needed now more than ever. This completely revised and expanded Third Edition of Dairy Microbiology Handbook, comprising both Volume I: Microbiology of Milk and Volume II: Microbiology of Milk Products, updates the discipline’s authoritative text with the latest safety research, guidelines, and information.

Pathogens have become a major issue in dairy manufacturing. Escheria coli is a concern, and milk-borne strains of Mycobacterium avium sub-sp. paratuberculosis have been identified as a possible cause of Crohn’s disease. Even little-known parasites like Cryptosporidium have caused disease outbreaks. Consequently, a hazard analysis of selected control/critical points (HACCP) in any manufacturing process has become essential to prevent the contamination of food. This volume also:

-Discusses new diagnostic techniques that allow a pathogen to be detected in a retail sample in a matter of hours rather than days
-Provides thorough coverage of dairy microbiology principles as well as practical applications
-Includes the latest developments in dairy starter cultures and genetic engineering techniques
-Offers completely updated standards for Good Manufacturing Practice

Quality control and product development managers, microbiologists, dairy scientists, engineers, and graduate students will find the Third Edition of Dairy Microbiology Handbook to be a vital resource.

                              Book Description

This six volume Encyclopedia is the most comprehensive, detailed treatment of molecular biology and molecular medicine available today!

The Encyclopedia provides a single-source library of molecular genetics and the molecular basis of life, with a focus on molecular medicine. Genetic screening, gene therapy, structural biology, and the technology and findings of the Human Genome Project are discussed in detail.

The articles that comprise the set are designed as self-contained treatments. Each of the nearly 300 articles begins with an outline and a key word section which includes definitions. These features assist the scientist or student who is unfamiliar with a specific subject area. A glossary of basic terms completes each volume and defines the most commonly used terms in molecular biology. Together with the introductory illustrations found in each volume, these definitions enable readers to understand articles without referring to a dictionary, textbook, or other reference.

                                Book Description

The most comprehensive and authoritative reference book of its kind, The Oxford Companion to Ships and the Sea is a completely revised and updated edition of a classic volume that was first published in 1976 to huge acclaim, hailed as 'a beguiling book' (Daily Telegraph), 'marvellous' (The Times), and 'totally absorbing' (Financial Times). It brings together more than 2,600 entries on every imaginable aspect of the seas and the vessels that sail on them, from shipbuilding, yachting, diving, and marine mammals, to tidal power, piracy, and the literature and language of the sea. This second edition provides significant new material on topics that have come to prominence in recent times, such as oceanography and marine archaeology: key contributions on these subjects from marine expert Dr Martin Angel at Southampton Oceanography Centre include climate change, environmental issues, marine pollution, and marine wildlife. Among the many brand new entries to this edition are up-to-the-minute articles on underwater vehicles, tsunamis, warfare at sea, marine pollution, the Economic Exclusion Zone, and ship preservation. This Companion also includes authoritative and fascinating entries on maritime history: its naval battles, including Pearl Harbor and Trafalgar; its great ships, from Noah's Ark and the Bounty to the Titanic and the Mary Rose; and its most famous individuals, both real and fictional, including Christopher Columbus, Horatio Nelson, and Robinson Crusoe. Entries are fully cross-referenced, and the text is illustrated with over 260 detailed drawings, making it more accessible than ever before.

5 out of 5 stars Ahoy, you landlubbers!.......2007-07-18

If you want the history and particulars about seafaring since time began then this is just the book. Rag sailors to plastic pushers, it's all in there. A serious research source for writers, teachers, etc. I give them away as gifts to my psuedo-seafaring friends (hoping they will learn the difference from port and starboard).

                                1 out of 5 stars Disappointment.......2007-01-16

Oxford's earlier paperback of this title had larger type, larger page size, better pictures. I had expected the same book. Now I think the hardbound is a much better buy.

5 out of 5 stars An Encyclopaedia of Ships and the Sea........2005-01-16

Every time I pick up this book I find myself being drawn into reading far more than was either planned or expected. It is a beguiling book because each fact explained seems to lead to another which must also be found and read. But, in turning the pages one is constantly hijacked by something of interest which has simply caught the eye - and so it continues.

Laid out in true encyclopaedic form, this book contains almost one thousand pages of facts - many of which are supported by black and white graphics or photographs. The only exception is the colour used right at the end to show; Ships flags, ships lights, Buoys and Buoyage - all of which are, of course, wholly dependant on colour in order to be fully explained.

The bookshelf of anyone engaged in the research of ships and shipwrecks would be empty without a copy of this excellent and most useful publication.

5 out of 5 stars Best possible reference.......2000-04-04

With an encyclopedic format, this book provides the reader with a wide array of very well written definitions, explanations and anecdotal references to all things nautical. It also includes a significant amount of biographical information on sailors of historical renown and those of more recent times. It is written in such a way as to be captivating on its own - I often find myself looking up a nautical reference and then spending many more minutes or even hours engrossed in the book because of the other items I see when looking up the first. In each entry, the terms used to describe the entry are asterisked if those terms are further defined elsewhere in the book. I found this extremely useful for knowing where else to look for more information related to the particular entry reading. An excellent reference book for novice and expert.

5 out of 5 stars An indispensable guide.......2000-02-04

I am a lay reader, not a student of nautical history, and I found this guide absolutely essential while reading the Aubrey-Maturin novels of Patrick O'Brian.

                                Book Description

How old is the Earth? Is it really likely to be hit by a meteorite? What can Antarctic ice cores and Milankovitch cycles tell us about global warming? What is a Milankovitch cycle anyway? Where would you find black smokers? Are they ever likely to be useful? What causes tornadoes? Should you worry if you live near a transform plate boundary? What is the difference between a tidal wave and a tsunami? Does it matter? Can rocks affect your health? Answers to these and many similar questions will be found in the Oxford Companion to the Earth. The aim of the Companion is to provide concise and readable accounts of the main phenomena and processes relating to the Earth. Like the other Oxford Companions, it is aimed at a wide readership, and will appeal both to professional Earth scientists seeking an accessible digest of topics outside their own areas of specialization, as well as to the general reader wishing an approachable reference to our planet and the environment. For all these readers, and many more, the Companion will not only provide a valuable source of reference but also fascinating and informative browsing. The scope of the Companion is wide: it is concerned with the entire planetary environment on which all living things (ourselves included) depend: the atmosphere and the oceans as well as the solid Earth. And since we can no longer consider the Earth in isolation, information about other parts of the Solar System also finds a place here. Included in the Companion: Over 900 entries, from acid rain to zoogeomorphology, and over 200 expert contributors Complete coverage of the Earth sciences, including geology, geophysics, geochemistry, geodesy, geomorphology, soil science, glaciology, oceanography, climatology, meteorology, enviromental and resource development, volcanology, and the history of the Earth sciences Over 800 pages with 600 illustrations and 16 pages of full colour plates Useful appendices, including detailed index, geological timescale, facts and figures about the Earth and its near neighbours, table of chemical elements. The Companion is a unique and important reference source which will be invaluable to anyone with an interest in the Earth, its history, formation, and environment.

4 out of 5 stars Oxford Companion to Earth a solid entry in this series.......2001-04-30

"The Oxford Companion to the Earth" is one of the more recent titles to be published by Oxford University Press (copyright 2000). One of the defining characteristics of the "Companion" series is comprehensiveness and this volume is no exception. In 1,174 pages, closeto one thousand entries appear, from "Acid Rain" to "Zoogeomorphology." All the topics one would expect to find in an encyclopedia of the earth sciences are here: volcanoes, plate tectonics, earthquakes, glaciers, the weather and other such standard fare are represented. A pleasant surprise is the unanticipated subject matter, such as "Art and the Earth Sciences," "Geoscience and the Media" and "Wine and Geology." Think of it as a rounding up of the unusual suspects. This kind of inclusiveness is a double-edged sword. While many topics are touched on, many are given only superficial treatment. "History of Geochemistry," for example, is not particularly helpful, as it is litle more than an enumeration of dates and events, without any analysis or context. To be sure, this shortcoming is due partly out of necessity, as an in-depth discussion of every topic would result in an unwieldly tome. I found the longer articles more informative, such as "Mantle and Core Composition," which takes up better than four pages. On the whole, this book presents an overview of a particular topic, rather than an examination of it. While well illustrated,l the majority of visual material consists of line drawings. Photographs, what few there are, have been printed n black and white only and generally are quite small. One of the features of this series that I particularly like are the "extras" presented to the reader. In the case of "Earth," they include paleogeographic maps printed on the end papers and a number of appendices covering the gelogic times scales, comparatative data on the earth and other planets of the solar system, the periodic table of the elements and several pages of scientific units, conversion tables an abbreviations of scientific terms. All in all, I regard this as a worhty addition to the library of anyone who desires a "just the facts, ma'am" approach to topics in the earth sciences.

                                    Book Description

Many important physical systems have input-output properties related to the conservation, dissipation and transport of energy. The theory surrounding such "dissipative properties" may be used as a framework for the design and analysis of control systems. The consideration of dissipativity is useful – and may be indispensable – for control applications like robotics, active vibration damping and circuit theory and for some control techniques themselves: adaptive, nonlinear- H-infinity , and inverse-optimal control among them.

Dissipative Systems Analysis and Control (second edition) presents a fully revised and expanded treatment of dissipative systems theory, constituting a self-contained, advanced introduction for graduate students, researchers and practising engineers. It examines linear and nonlinear systems with examples of both in each chapter; some infinite-dimensional and nonsmooth examples are also included. Throughout, emphasis is placed on the use of the dissipative properties of a system for the design of stable feedback control laws. The theory is consistently substantiated by experimental results and by reference to its application in illustrative physical cases (Lagrangian and Hamiltonian systems and passivity-based and adaptive controllers are covered thoroughly).

The second edition is substantially reorganized both to accommodate new material and to enhance its pedagogical properties. Some of the changes introduced are:

                                    • Complete proofs of the main theorems and lemmas.

                                    • The Kalman–Yakubovich–Popov Lemma for non-minimal realizations, singular systems, and discrete-time systems (linear and nonlinear).

                                    • Passivity of nonsmooth systems (differential inclusions, variational inequalities, Lagrangian systems with complementarity conditions).

                                    • Sections on optimal control and H-infinity theory.

                                    • An enlarged bibliography with more than 550 references, and an augmented index with more than 500 entries.

                                    • An improved appendix with introductions to viscosity solutions, Riccati equations and some useful matrix algebra.

                                      Book Description

This book calls for a new iconography of region that unseats New England’s status as cultural center of the United States and originary metaphor for national identity. No single territorial or political axis can adequately describe the complex regional relationships that comprise the nation, Anne Goldman argues. Goldman's arguments question critical sectionalism as extensively as they do regional divisions, by blurring generic distinctions, by reading across literary periods, and by juxtaposing writers who explore the same set of social issues during the same historical moment, but who are conventionally located in separate literary traditions: sentimental literature, the African American novel, literary modernism, early Mexican fiction.
