One of the best!.......2006-01-26

If you've read any of my reviews you know that I read tons of this genre. I particularly enjoy short, get to the point books. This is definitely one of them. I read this book in about an hour, devouring every page. Unlike another reviewer, I am going to spoil the secret for you. This is it: Whenever you plan to do something, promise to do it, and keep your word, no matter what! This 'secret' comes in the middle of the book, and there is so much valuable info before and after that knowing this 'secret' definitely won't ruin your reading experience. Since reading this book, I am constantly thinking to myself, am I willing to commit, without reserve-to make certain changes. I highly recommend this book.

Intresting Idea Which Implemented Will Change Your Life.......2000-03-22

The books' title overplays the content of this book, and the message it gives just a little. This is why I gave it 4 stars. The secret if implemented will have a very positive affect on everyones life. That there is no doubt about it. I'm not going to spoil the concept, by telling you what the secret is but the book is worth reading to find out.

The Secret is a little blunt. The author gives you in a way one idea and that's it. I do not think that this one idea will take you to phenomenal success.

If Rapid Success is what you are after, first try; Physco Cybernetics by Mawell Maltz, this book will help create the self image foundation stone. Success is not an Accident by Tommy Newbury will teach you how to set goals effectively. Think and Grow Rich N Hill, The Science of Getting Rich by Wallace D. Wattles and Born Rich by Bob Proctor will teach you all about wealth creation. Only after reading all these other books can the idea or secret in this book help.

I would recomend this book, only as another book in your self development process, not as a foundation stone, upon which success would be built. So buy the aforementioned books in the order suggested, then buy this one.

I've read this book and it expained the differences between separate accounts and mutual funds very clearly. Especially with the scandal in mutual funds it is obvious it is better to be personally managed than to be part of a school of fish. One reviewer of this book ranted about the separate accounts industry, but did not recognize this book addressed many of the issues he raised. He, unfortunately, is angry at a manager and took it out on the industry. That is like buying a bad carton of milk and considering the entire dairy industry is spoiled.

Separate accounts are without a doubt the best way to get personalized financial service without the worries. Just keep in mind, use reputable managers and follow the advice of this book.

Don't believe the naysayers, this is the best.......2003-11-14

This book does a great job disspelling the myths put out by mutual fund lackeys who so greatly fear separate accounts. For example, it powerfully and accurately demonstrates that the total cost of funds (with trading, advice, loads, unrealized cap gains, and management fees of which many are never disclosed)is typically higher than separate accounts (which typically have a fully-disclosed bundled fee). The naysayers fail to recognize the fee trends and discounts prevalant in the industry today that make separate accounts more than competitive. Further, the "index" crowd ignores three facts demonstrated in this great book:

1. Separate Accounts offer index options if investors want them,
2. Index returns lagged active managers significantly in the recent bear market, and
3. There is no perfect index to follow so they're not the panacea they're made out to be.

This book overall addresses and overwhelms the simplistic arguments against separate accounts. When used in the proper context, separate accounts are superior in every respect. They also are immune from the manipulation suffered by funds that has been so well documented in recent months due to their high level of transparency.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to get a fair review of investment options. This work should not be ignored.

Separate accounts are the darling of the investment industry. They are targeted at wealthy investors, and they charge significantly higher fees than mutual funds. Moreover, because the fees are billed as a percentage of assets they generate consistent income for money managers and brokers, in contrast to brokerage commissions which decline when investors stop trading in down markets. In other words: separate accounts are big earners for Wall Street.

This book advocates separate accounts, and in so doing runs counter to two widely accepted findings of academic finance: (1) active management fails to beat the market indexes, and (2) keeping costs (ie. fees) down has a dramatic impact on long term investment returns.

If you're going to read this book, make sure you read the myriad of arguments on the other side of the debate. (The debate is actually rather lopsided.) You can find material in book form or for free online. For the former, try works by John Bogle on mutual funds, William Bernstein on asset allocation and indexing, and Chandan Sengupta for a basic outline of the arguments for indexing. For the latter, try the material at ABetterWayToInvest which has a chapter on separately managed accounts.

Best Book on The Subject I own.......2002-04-29

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in separate accounts. It is particularly useful for brokers and investment professionals.

The days of mutual funds are numbered. At some point, the general public will see that the future of equity management is in separate accounts. Great information on how to read satellite images. Will greatly help in Meteorology studies whether you're a student or a more advanced hobbyist. It is best to have an introduction into meteorology such as "Meteorology Today" before reading this book. It will help in your understanding of the text.

My search for Eddington's theory........2004-05-24

Ever since I was an undergraduate in physics at MIT in 1974 and found an obscure reference to Eddington's theory in another book (Applied Group Theoretic and Matrix Methods by Brian Higman), I've been reading Eddington's books and papers dealing with his theory and trying to understand his ideas. Finally there is a book that was written by someone who has studied them extensively, published papers dealing with them and obviously has an excellent understanding of this subject.

I have read this book several times and now have a good idea of where Eddington got his ideas and why he got them. The book has explained much of why it is so difficult to understand Eddington's writings. It has made me understand why he was convinced that his algebra was crucial to understanding physics. Also it points out some of the errors in his thinking.

If you are familiar with Eddington's works and want to understand them better, this is the book for you.

Super Reader.......2007-08-30

You can't catch him! A French agent is sent to England undercover as a French diplomat, to try and capture Percy Blakeney (or, actually, his alter-ego, the Scarlet Pimpernel) and get him back to France where they can lop him for all the humiliation and trouble that he has caused.

Said dodgy Frenchman with the help of a sneaky French actress manages to get his hands on Marguerite, and has her in prison.

This leaves the Pimpernel to come up with a plan that will make the Frenchies look silly again.

Definitely an entertaining adventure.

THE ELUSIVE PIMPERNEL.......2006-09-02

The Elusive Pimpernel follows closely on the heals of the first book of the series, The Scarlet Pimpernel. It seems to me that Baroness Orczy was pouring out her own heart feelings through that of Lady Blackney. Her excellent use of discription makes your own heart ache till near bursting with devotion, love, passion and even fear. There is never a dull moment in this wonderfully wriiten book. I love it and will read it over and over.

THE ELUSIVE PIMPERNEL, the third book in the Pimpernel series by Baroness Orczy, thoroughly establishes the predominant feature that the reader has come to expect in Orczy's novels: faultless cunning and adventurous bravado by the heroic Pimpernel that never fails to foil the nefarious schemes of his enemies, the revolutionaries of Robespierre's 18th century French Republic.

The reader also knows to expect a bit of archaic word usage, such as "lanthorn" for "lantern," as well as a little French slang here and there that will not succumb to most translating dictionaries, such as "calotin," which, by virtue of the context, I take to be a derogatory term for a churchman. Orczy also throws a few quite good but somewhat uncommon terms into her prose, such as "Columbine," a stock character from Italian drama. Merely because I generally feel rather cheated if I miss the full implication of an author's words, I found it comforting to have one of my English dictionaries as well as my French translating dictionary near at hand while reading Orczy, although it is quite possible to enjoy the plot without recourse to such references, especially if one is adept at grasping the general meaning of unusual words from their context in the story.

As in her other novels, Orczy's characters are stereotypes and are "flat"; that is, they remain the same throughout the story and do not undergo any particular development or change. Sir Percy Blakeney remains the stalwart, unshakable and indestructible adventurer throughout. His arch enemy, Monsieur Chauvelin, begins and ends as a dark, despicable creature who constantly connives to bring down Sir Percy. Lady Marguerite Blakeney plays the part of every significant female figure in Orczy's novels: She means well ands her motivations are impeccable, but her "feminine weakness," the fatal flaw that she suffers merely because of her sex, leads her into unwittingly betraying her husband and placing them both in such jeopardy that nothing short of the audacity and swashbuckling daring of the Scarlet Pimpernel can possibly save them.

As stereotyped characters, the actors who populate Orczy's novel are all somewhat larger than life. Sir Percy is invariably heroic and gently but firmly conquering. Lady Blakeney is invariably the pure, honorable but weak woman. Chauvelin and other leaders of the French revolution are invariably terrorists and anarchists. Abbe Foucquet is invariably the naive old priest who constantly murmurs his Paters and Aves in good times and bad. The attraction of Orczy's novels lies firmly in their suspenseful plots, not in the roundedness or the development of their characters.

Thinking of her depiction of the old priest as well as some descriptions in the preceding novel, I WILL REPAY, I find Orczy's attitude toward religion to be interesting. On the one hand, she depicts churchmen as naive and guileless innocents, rather useless and, at best, irrelevant in the worldly struggle that surrounds them. On the other hand, she portrays the revolutionaries in the harshest of lights and sarcastically observes that they have replaced the good God (le bon dieu) with the "Goddess of Reason," who, in being represented by an incompetent actress during her inaugural procession, is shown to be false. Hence, we find criticism both of those who would nay-say the existence of God and of those who would guide the devotions of his followers.

While it is not absolutely necessary to have read the two preceding novels in order to enjoy THE ELUSIVE PIMPERNEL, the earlier works do establish the background for certain relationships, and a few events in them do receive occasional references in this novel. One's understanding of the third book in the series will certainly be enhanced by an acquaintance with the earlier books. On a final note, which I do hope piques my readers' curiosities, if one is not aware of the differences between the songs "Ca Ira" and "La Marseillaise," a brief Internet search will bring up the historical backgrounds, words and tunes of the two, enabling one to appreciate much more fully Orczy's references to them.

In brief, THE ELUSIVE PIMPERNEL continues its author's romp through the adventurous fields of a France racked by revolution and invaded by "that demmed elusive pimpernel." It's lightweight reading that mixes fun and relaxation in equal amounts. If we can think of some books on serious scientific or social topics as "classroom reading," then the Pimpernel books are our "recess reading" and should be enjoyed as such.

Fairly good sequel..........2002-11-02

"Elusive" isn't my favorite Pimpernel sequel, but it's not bad at all either.

First, the bad: While I can understand that Marguerite is a woman in love, some of her stupidity at the beginning bordered on unbelievable (I don't mean this as an offense to Margot, who is one of my favorite characters, but if you read this book, you'll understand what I mean when I say she makes a bad decision). As usual, Percy becomes a secondary character in his own books, and that bothers me. Lastly, the choice Chauvelin gives Marguerite and Percy gets to be a little too much.

The good:
When Percy is around, he really shines. He has some really great moments in this book (which I won't spoil). The reader gets an idea of some of the emotions that are going on behind the facade. Also, "Elusive" has much more of a climax than some of the other Pimpernel books, which is a nice relief. Lastly, Desiree Candeille is an interesting character.

In all, I would recommend Eldorado between Elusive Pimpernel, but it's still a good read anyway.

The Scarlet Pimpernel does it again!.......2002-03-19

What a great book! It's a worthy follow-up to the original, with plenty of excitement, loads of humor, world-class table-turning and narrow escapes.

My favorite Pimpernel...so far.......2000-09-13

The Scarlet Pimpernel novels are set in England and France during the French Revolution (1790's). They follow the adventures of the Scarlet Pimpernel, a dashing English rogue who saves prisoners from the clutches of the French guillotine. At home, this secret vigilante is known as Sir Percy Blakeney, king of London fashion and fop extraordinaire. Only his beloved wife Marguerite, his small band of followers, and his worst enemy M. Chauvelin know his alter-ego.

I have read many Pimpernel short stories and the first three novels. So far this is my favorite; it is the most romantic and suspenseful. In this novel Chauvelin tricks Sir Percy into accepting a duel with him in France. Chauvelin now knows the time and place that the Pimpernel will be within his grasp, and for extra security he takes a very special captive with him. Every chapter brought a new twist - each time I wondered how Sir Percy would pull it off. This novel is more romantic than The Scarlet Pimpernel, and we actually get to see the elegant Sir Percy loose his temper!

I only have one beef with this book, well, the whole series, actually. Even though written by a woman, it gives in to every stereotype of the strong male protectorate and the weak female dependant. Regardless, The Scarlet Pimpernel is an escapist novel that takes you back to a time when men were men and women were vain and fluffy, Okay, okay, beautiful and...beautiful...and...a nice accessory. No, that's not right either....*grumble, grumble* Read the book and don't think about it too much.

Elusive Pimpernel is one of the best books I've had the pleasure of reading. The sequel to Orczy's first in the 'Pimpernel' series, Elusive entwines the three principal players in a similar mesh of dilemmas that may just be predictable for a hard-core Pimpernel fan. However, it's the romance factor that makes this book what it is. Adventure though it may be, this book is the stepping-stone in the relationship between Marguerite and Percy, between their estrangement throughout most of the first book, and their mutual love that lasts for the rest of their lives... or at least the rest of the series.
