Nebulous.......2001-06-21
This book does teach one how to use PSPICE. However, one cannot learn a computer application PURELY by example. First, the fundamentals must be taught and THEN examples. For instance, before doing circuits with AC Analysis such as op-amps and BJT's, I must first discuss the overall AC features of PSPICE such as AC vs. Transient Analysis, and then show this difference using example circuits. The author, however, jumps too quickly into it, and so the reader is left plugging in parameters he/she have no idea about. Buy this book AFTER you learn PSPICE elsewhere. Otherwise, you're wasting your money. I'm still looking for such a book.
excellent introduction to excellent software.......2000-08-11
The free "evaluation" version of PSpice is excellent software, but does not come with any manuals, and the help file built in is often insufficient to understand the powerful options available. This text leads the user through all of the features of PSpice and Probe in a very clear way, with screen shots at every step, explaining everything left out of the 'eval' help file. It includes version 8 of PSPice, many files used in the book, and the MicroSIM reference manuals. Though the book is expensive, having the CD avoids a very long download of PSpice, which is worth something too. Many examples, from trivial DC circuits to complex digital/analog mixed circuits, are given as examples.
Excellent PSpice Tutorial for Beginners.......2000-04-15
Marc Herniter's Schematic Capture Using MicroSIm PSpice for Windows 95/98/NT is an excellent tutorial for people who don't have even a slightest clue of what PSpice is. The presentation of materials is excellent, although sometimes boring by explaining very basic Windows general application instructions, like how to maximize and minimize windows. I am especially impressed by examples, with a lot of screenshots. Overall, this is one of the finest books in PSpice. The CD-ROM (included) has all examples used in the book, as well as some extra library files, and the evaluation version of PSPice itself. I highly recommend it.

Book Description
The former East German economic system was restructured from a centrally-planned system into a decentralised one with private property rights. The new economic structure was put into place with the adoption of the West German legal framework and a privatisation model which focused on outsider privatisation. This has delivered adjustment defiencies because of the establishment of dominant large intercorporate West German and foreign owners outside East Germany.

Book Description
Dininio examines patterns of industrial assistance in the new German Lander (federal states) during the difficult transition from central planning to a market economy. She identifies the restructuring assistance given by the privatization agency, the Treuhandanstalt and the new federal state governments as the chief instruments of eastern industrial policy. In seeking to explain how the aid was allocated, Dr. Dininio examines the interests and policy resources of state and societal actors. The analysis shows that institutions condition to a significant extent the societal forces to which state actors respond in their policy choices. In the case of East Germany, the interplay of institutions and circumstances led to a large-firm bias. The unitary business and labor organizations that were extended into the East could not accommodate the divergent interests of new members and so failed to lobby on their behalf for industrial assistance. While societal actors remained relatively passive, state actors intervened on behalf of select firms. The primacy of certain state actors but not others in these interventions as well as their primary policy agendas, derived from the institutional contours of the German polity. First, the constitution of a federal agency to privatize 13,000 firms singly and under severe time pressure prompted agency officials to give priority to large firms in the interest of expediency. Second, the dominance of the executive branch enabled Chancellor Kohl to help his supporters in the chemical industry and at Carl Zeiss Jena as well as troubled firms of national significance, such as the shipyards and the giant steel mill EKO-Stahl. Third, the federal structure of the government gave Lander officials significant resources to support big employers in their state, especially those from regionally dominant industries.

A forgotten side of Mr Greene.......2000-08-29
This book -- all 800 or so pages -- is a goldmine for Greene fans. It's chock full of reviews, essays, articles, and letters, and it shows Mr Greene at his wittiest. Some of the reviews are absolutely scathing, and his insight into the film business is enlightening. Buy it.

Book Description
While the French Army in Indo-China is grappling with the Vietminh, back in Saigon a young and high-minded American named Pyle begins to channel economic aid to a "Third Force."
Caught between French colonialists and the Vietminh, Fowler, the narrator and seasoned foreign correspondent, observes: "I never knew a man who had better motives for all the trouble he caused." As young Pyle's policies blunder on into bloodshed, the older man finds it impossible to stand aside as an observer. But Fowler's motives for intervening are suspect, both to the police and to himself: for Pyle has robbed him of his Vietnamese mistress.
"No serious writer of this century has more thoroughly invaded and shaped the public imagination than Graham Greene." (Time)
Customer Reviews:
A Good Read.......2007-09-21
I read this novel on a cross-country (U.S) flight. It is fast paced and evocative of a time now lost. The book is remarkably prescient, not so much in predicting subsequent events, but more in characterizing the forces that would play a decisive role in the later twentieth century evolution of Vietnam.
Fowler, a cynical journalist in French-occupied Vietnam, has his life disrupted when Pyle, and idealistic, impractical American comes on the scene and not only steals his girlfriend, but, fronting for the CIA, backs a Vietnamese general to establish a third force, democracy, to counter the communists and the French colonials, with terrible results. A key subplot involves Fowler's loss and subsequent recovery of his mistress, Phuong. To some degree, the characters and their relationships to one another mirror the stances and actions of their respective countries.
One of the book's interesting dynamics is Fowler's introspective dialogue. He views Pyle with cynical disdain. Pyle, on the other hand, wants Fowler to accept him as a friend (he continually presses Fowler to call him by his first name; Fowler resists) and understand and respect his motives.
With the Vietnam/French conflict as background environment, the novel seeks to explore the conflict between Fowler and Pyle. Greene provides a realistic description of Vietnam in the early fifties: of Saigon, Haiphong, the villages, the Viet Minh and so forth. The book also contains several descriptions of the casualties of war.
The Quiet American is set at a time when revolutionary forces were adopting a Marxist model based on China's successful Communist revolution. The French and British were both trying to maintain a grasp on crumbling empires by resisting revolutionary forces. The Americans opposed the Soviet Union, and the spread of communism throughout the world. The Americans viewed communism as monolithic at the time, and believed in the "Domino Theory," which stated that once Vietnam became communist, the other nations of Southeast Asia would also do so, like a line of falling dominos, each one tipping another. Subsequent events would disprove that theory and prove nationalism to be the more relevant factor.
Robert Stone provides an insightful introduction to the Penguin Classics Deluxe edition.
Excellent Read on Geopolitics/Foreign Policy.......2007-05-24
Normally I prefer to read non-fiction books. Literary "masters" i.e. Virginia Wolf, James Joyce, etc often write pieces so convoluted, often which are supposed to be representative of a greater theme that they become out of touch with even the most educated readers. Not so with The Quiet American. A tale of a jaded expatriate contrasts that of a bright eyed American who tries to "make a difference" in Vietnam. You will easily be able to draw comparisons with the themes of this novel to any modern US foreign policy, i.e. the failures of the CIA, communist intervention, the war of terrorism, Iraq, Colonialism, etc etc. On a more literal, as in real, level, The Quiet American offers good picture of Vietnam before its rapid modernization.
This is what I've been missing!.......2007-05-16
This novel was a breath of nostalgic fresh air to me, and I realized this is what I've been missing. I'm tired of overwrought prose (some literary fiction feels like it tries so hard) and plot twist after contrived plot twist (Dan Brown et al) and laundry lists of trendy shoes and boutiques (chick lit in general). What I want is a good story, believable, well-told, with enough characterization and well-placed description to transport me somewhere and make me believe that something interesting actually happens. This reminds me of when I was a child and a book was so good you stayed up late to read it. I'll be looking for more Graham Greene for my bookshelf.
Global Politics Writ Small.......2007-02-21
The Quiet American is my favorite Graham Greene novel, despite "The Power and the Glory" being widely held as his masterpiece. In typical Greene style, Vietnam of the mid 50's is painted vividly as seen through the eyes of Fowler, a British journalist covering the war when the only western power involved was a crumbling colonial France.
Fowler is a vestige of what our Rumsfield might have called "old Europe". He is old, tired, urbane but practical. His world weariness also makes him corruptible. He shares a flat with a Vietnamese national named Phuong, Vietnamese for Phoenix. He is good to her and she enables him, but to call what they share love would be rather too strong a word.
Enter Pyle, young healthy CIA buck from the States. Pyle is idealistic as he is naive. Like a baby gorilla, he seems to be wholly unaware of his strength. Acting on a wave of badly informed idealism, Pyle wreaks havoc on the tenuous equilibrium of those trapped in a war zone. The helpless Phuong is particularly vulnerable, but like her namesake, she and her country will rise again from the destruction ravaging the land.
At publication, this novel was perceived as anti-American and roundly criticized in this country. Like the Vatican's denouncement of the whisky priest in Greene's "The Power and the Glory", one tends to think that the offences were caused by Greene's rendering of a cowardly priest and naive American being dead-on. The irony is that the American backlash to the perceived slight did cause Greene to dislike Americans: a case of life imitating art imitating life.
This is an outstanding book, and the last 50 years has only made it more powerful. It is the drama of global policy played out by sympathetic and flawed humans.
Good listen. . . .......2007-01-03
The story is excellent and very timely. The reading is very good EXCEPT when the narrator does the voice of the Quiet American, who is a Bostonian. The reader uses an annoying pseudo-Texas accent that is totally wrong and completely detracts from the story.

Bill's Back With More than 100.......2000-04-01
Continuing in the style that made the "Now you See it, Now you don't" series of books so valuable for the reader, Bill discusses a series of platform tricks ( quite a few can't be done with ordinary objects i.e. the linking rings and the Chinese wands to name two ) with accompanying hand drawn illustrations by Frank Daniel. This is the system he used to such great effect with illustrator Barry Ross in his other books to show the intricacies of sleight of hand, the drawings were able to show details that would be covered up or obscured in photos. Unlike his other books, which were long on method and short on tricks, this book has a great many tricks often with little thought to the routining of them. And at only 101 tricks he seems at times to be reaching, and missing in the quest to include something useful. I can only recommend about half the book, but in that half is some great classics of magic explained in an easy to follow and understandable manner. The format of the book with its many drawings is useful for but a few tricks (most notably the linking rings). While with many of the others the illustration seem to only waste page space, but then we might have been treated to more tricks like "relit" which is simply the relighting of a just blown out candle by having the flame of a match travel down the smoke.

Book Description
Developers who write programs for GNOME use the GNOME API. Working with the GNOME API is preferable because the program will conform to the standard GNOME program look and feel. It also allows the developer to use the GNOME specific libraries in the program, greatly simplifying the development process. The Official GNOME 2 Developer's Guide is the official GNOME Foundation guide to programming GUIs and applications using the GTK+ and GNOME API. Developed in partnership with the GNOME Foundation, this book is for programmers working with the GNOME 2 desktop environment. Each section begins with an example program that serves as a tutorial, then develops into a reference on the topic. Includes abundant, well-annotated examples. Knowledge of the C programming language is required, but no GUI programming experience is necessary.
Customer Reviews:
Definitely not for beginners........2007-06-20
Do not get this book unless you are already a skilled programmer. This is a quote from the introduction of the book: you must already have:
1. "experience in C, including pointers, dynamically allocated data structures, and pointers to functions. You should also be familiar with enumeration types and bit fields."
2. "a solid grasp of pointers to pointers (**types), where to use them, and how to extract and use the address of a pointer."
3. "understanding of C macros and the C preprocessor"
4. "fundamental understanding of Unix: processers, libraries, search paths, and so on."
Also, they recommend experience with callbacks and handlers.
So, again, if you are just setting out to learn programming as a beginner, this book will not help.
a clean introducion.......2006-08-03
This is a very clean and readable book introducing Gnome/Gtk2/GLib2 application developpement and can be also used for understanding GLib2 C utilities (strings, hashes, arrays, lists, trees...) and Gtk2 (treeview wigets, etc..). It also adds the Gconf stuff (an api for storing your app's configuration).
But unfortunately, neither the Bonobo graphical components nor the Corba services are presented. So, after reading the book, you still cannot know how to make your program communicate and integrate with other Gnome de facto standard apps. I hope some people will add one chatper or two about that in the next version..
Does What It Sets Out To Do.......2005-03-24
This is a pretty heavy duty programming book. The opening words say you should have, "Firm Programming Experience in C, including pointers, dynamically allocated data structures, and pointers to functions, C macros and the C preprocessor, fundamental understanding of Unix: processes, libraries, search paths, and so on."
Then the first chapter is on GLIB, a description of the more popular of the routines included in the library. The second chapter, GOBJECT has an opening note: "This chapter is dry and dense." -- Still, this chapter is one of the best descriptions of object oriented programming that I've ever read.
Finally in chapter 3 you begin to get into the heart of the matter. GTK+ is the toolkit for programming the GUI. Chapter 4 is on the GNOME Libraries. These two chapters are really the heart of the book and runs for about forty percent of the entire book. After that there is just some odds and ends that are left over.
This book, as clearly and succinctly as possible does what it sets out to do. It's not the simplest book on the shelf, but then again, neither is its subject.
Good book.......2004-08-21
As the author already states in the introduction the book doesn't cover all the aspects of gtk and gnome, because then the book would be over 1000 pages, but with what it covers it covers very well and you can have a great start with gnome programming.
The rest you can probably find out from the online documentation or the author has to write a part II
Excellent intro.......2004-05-16
I'm more of a command line kind of guy, but there are things better done in a graphical treatment. When this is true, I often resort to HTML, but that isn't always suitable either. Most of what I've read about GUI programming has left me feeling daunted by the learning curve, and the writing itself has mostly been difficult to read and unsatisfying
This book was a delightful exception. As its introduction promises, the content "lies somewhere between a tutorial and a reference". The code examples are often just the kind of things you would write yourself to test-drive your understanding; no unnecessary fluff. There are complete programs also, and these are downloadable from the No Starch web site.
Matthias Warkus has a real knack for explaining complex subjects. I particularly liked his way of explaining object inheritance, which is completely upside down from the way it is usually presented, and thereby makes a much more understandable case for using OO code.
The first chapter is an overview of GLib capabilies. I was quite surprised at the things GLib includes: I come from the days when you needed to buy commercial libraries to get features like memory management, linked lists, B-trees, etc. The second chapter covers GObject, which adds Object Oriented capability to standard C programming. That's an important aspect of Gnome: it is plain vanilla C with the OO stuff added on through the GObject library. For those of us who have yet to be entranced by C++, that's important.
Chapters three and four explain GTK+ and the Gnome libraries, the overlap between them, and hen you'd use either. Chapter five is a lucid introduction to Glade, the interactive development tool for Gnome. I was interested to note that Glade produces XML files that your programs references through calls to Glade libraries.
The rest of the book is miscellaneous coverage that wasn't covered elsewhere; compiling issues, configuration helpers like Gconf. I had ben previously unaware of the GnomeVFS discussed in chapter eight which allows your program to transparently access remote web servers and archive formats like PKzipped files.
All in all, this looks like a very good intro to Gnome GUI development.
