5 out of 5 stars A Great Book.......2006-08-08

This is a great book. You will learn alot about the power of money and the power of your thoughts regarding money. You will never think of money the same way after reading this book. Highly recommended. A Must Read.

5 out of 5 stars Oy! What A Treasure.......2006-01-21

I love this book. I have had it for years and it has been a source of wisdom and inspiration. I highly recommend this little gem.

5 out of 5 stars Really liked it.........2005-05-14

This is a book that you can read and re-read to make sure that its principles remain grounded within you. I found many of the Rabbi's writings on expending other people's time..speaking of others in disheartening ways..and the value of money and promise to be great reminders of what I should expect from others and what I should be expending myself. It's a great consicous watch-dog for me and I've enjoyed the book immensely.

5 out of 5 stars The Kabbalah of Money-- A Critical Review.......2005-03-30

The Kabbalah of Money is an essential book for anyone who's interested in increasing their personal wealth, improving the quality of life ("tikkun haOlom") or desires insight into the inner workings of successful living.

I've read and re-read this book multiple times since I bought in back in August, 2004. To say it is a business book "...Money" would indeed be a disservice to the reader and Rabbi Bonder. This book is about, first and foremost, understanding how one's behavior-- by thought, speech and action-- influences the environment for good or otherwise.

Let me also point out that it does address business issues, but it does so with ample does of Talmudic wisdom. And, to my pleasure, it is not overly heavyhanded in its scope.

The book does not teach the how to's of getting into business, but the ethical and spiritual aspects. So, for instance, if one is a fan of Mr. Donald "The Art of the Deal" Trump, it would behoove you to have a copy of this while you're watching The Apprentice. It's akin to The Power of Positive Thinking and/or Enthusiasm Makes the Difference by Dr. Norman Vincent Peale, but with the obvious Jewish foundation.

I highly recommend this book, it is a gem and its rewards are hidden in its pages.

5 out of 5 stars Time Management and Ethics in the Marketplace.......2000-05-26

In many ways THE KABBALAH OF MONEY is more about time management than it is about money. A theme that weaves its way through the book is that the optimal use of one's time is to devote it to study and learning - not just any studying, however, but the study of the Torah. In Jewish tradition, time is to be divided between study, work, and physiological needs (eating, sleeping, elimination, and leisure). All of our free time, once our work and physiological needs have been met should be devoted to study.

In this book, Rabbi Bonder brings together his knowledge of the working of the "marketplace" with Jewish ethical teachings, Talmudic Interpretations, teachings of the Hasidic Masters, Jewish Mysticism, and logical analysis. Here, marketplace is variously described as: a market of exchanges and interactions which represents "the infinite quantity of small and great businesses that take place in the universe at any given minute" and as a place where "each individual's fitness to survive is in accordance with his or her own perception of what survival is."

In keeping with the time theme, one of the problems to be faced has to do with devoting one's time to amassing wealth. In other words, how much is too much? Time that is spent with the objective of accumulating wealth (beyond that which meets our own needs and is beneficial to others) represents a two pronged loss. First of all, the creation of this type of wealth creates an offsetting scarcity. Secondly it involves wasting time that could, and should, be better spent in study. In contemporary terms, the accumulation of excess wealth is not ecologically sound.

Another area of discussion is the relationship of God to the marketplace. Rabbi Bonder states that "when a person prays only for material gains his pleas and efforts are wasted. This is because a curtain is brought down between himself and God as a result of material things having been brought into the domain of the spirit.

This book has had an impact on the way I conduct my life. Before reading it, my standard reaction to anyone asking for a handout was a knee-jerk reaction that he'll probably just use it to get drunk. After reading Bonder's section on dealing with beggars and how these dealings affect the marketplace, I came to 2 realizations:

1. So what if he does use it for drink. He probably needs the drink more than I need the dollar.

and

2. Who am I to judge anyway.

I highly recommend this book. In spite of its brevity it's not an easy read. I have barely touched the surface of a few of the concepts of what the dust jacket refers to as "a broad and ethical view of economic behavior including all forms of exchange and human interaction, from how we spend our money to how we fulfill our role as responsible human beings in a global ecological framework."

    Book Description

In The Business of Alchemy, Pamela Smith explores the relationships among alchemy, the court, and commerce in order to illuminate the cultural history of the Holy Roman Empire in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. In showing how an overriding concern with religious salvation was transformed into a concentration on material increase and economic policies, Smith depicts the rise of modern science and early capitalism. In pursuing this narrative, she focuses on that ideal prey of the cultural historian, an intellectual of the second rank whose career and ideas typify those of a generation. Smith follows the career of Johann Joachim Becher (1635-1682) from university to court, his projects from New World colonies to an old-world Pansophic Panopticon, and his ideas from alchemy to economics. Teasing out the many meanings of alchemy for Becher and his contemporaries, she argues that it provided Becher with not only a direct key to power over nature but also a language by which he could convince his princely patrons that their power too must rest on liquid wealth.

Agrarian society regarded merchants with suspicion as the nonproductive exploiters of others' labor; however, territorial princes turned to commerce for revenue as the cost of maintaining the state increased. Placing Becher's career in its social and intellectual context, Smith shows how he attempted to help his patrons assimilate commercial values into noble court culture and to understand the production of surplus capital as natural and legitimate. With emphasis on the practices of natural philosophy and extensive use of archival materials, Smith brings alive the moment of cultural transformation in which science and the modern state emerged.

4 out of 5 stars Alchemy and Science?.......2001-05-21

Pamela Smith's work, "The Business of Alchemy", has a rather startling thesis. We all know that throughout history alchemy and empirical science have been considered seperate, and as soon as such men as Newton and Darwin came along, psuedosciences such as alchemy disappeared lost all credability. Right? Wrong. As Pamela Smith explains, that notion is ahistorical. The only problem with this book is that it is boring. I had trouble finishing even a single sentances without being bored. In conclusion, she should write more books about the history of science in Early Modern Europe. Over and out!

    Book Description

Ancient and mystical, Kabbalah plunges deep into the fundamental questions of existence: who we are and why we are on this Earth--which accounts for its renewed and widespread popularity with those from many religions and sacred paths. According to Jewish lore, God first taught the Angels, and Kabbalah's wisdom has influenced Christianity, sects such as the Rosicrucians, and even tarot and astrology. Make this system of knowledge and spiritual enrichment work for you, using this lushly illustrated and beautifully charted guidebook. Kabbalah's history and most profound secrets, from the multiple meanings of the Tree of Life to the steps on the Ladder of Light, unfold one by one. Many universes open up to you: Assiah, World of Experience; Yetzirah, World of Consciousness; Briah, World of Mind; Atziluth, World of Insight; and still more. Practical exercises such as meditations, chants, affirmations, and journal writing accompany the explanations and will immeasurably increase your understanding and spiritual well-being.

4 out of 5 stars Great for a Beginning Overview.......2007-07-27

This book was never intended to be used for in-depth study. I have studied the Kabbalah for many years and I use this book as a reference when I need a quick reminder, a simple definition or just want to organize my thoughts when I am doing a presentation about Kabbalah.

I recommend this book for people who are curious about the Kabballah but don't know if they want to commit to serious study. Traditional texts and classes can get you bogged down very quickly, but this book presents a clear, concise description of what the Kabbalah is and how it can be used.

    Great for beginners.

3 out of 5 stars Too many diagrams not enough text.......2004-02-13

A simplistic text which uses artwork and diagrams to dumb down the scriptural basis of Kaballah. This short read is full of pictures and diagrams that try to walk the reader through the mysteries of Kaballah, explaining the many aspects of it and illuminating its basics to the reader. The problem here is that the book does not give a full picture of Kabalistic works. The Zohar, one of the prime texts of Kaballah, is not shown to be a biblical commentary, which is it, but rather this book portrays Kaballah almost as if it were Yoga or some esoteric mystical faith, not founded securely in Jewish thought and religion. Probably this book might be a bare minimum of introduction but it requires more reading for one to appreciate what Kaballah really means. Danny Matt's 'Zohar' is a for more acceptable read.

    4 out of 5 stars Good basics.......2001-08-29

The editorial review is a little harsh and I have no doubt that for the experienced Kabbalah reader it doesn't do much for them. For myself, someone just trying to get some basic information on it, it was a great primer. It lays out the Kabbalah, the Tree of Life and the Ladder of Light and their associations fairly clearly. There were many times I was left with lots of questions, but that only makes me want to read more. I don't think that the author intended this to be an indepth analysis of the Kabbalah. The visual characteristics are clear and help visually to explain what he is talking about. There is also a good brief history and how other areas of mysticism link to the Kabbalah. It's a good place to start, but not one where you would want to end.

          Book Description

Most insurers around the world have introduced some form of merit-rating in automobile third party liability insurance. Such systems, penalizing at-fault accidents by premium surcharges and rewarding claim-free years by discounts, are called bonus-malus systems (BMS) in Europe and Asia. With the current deregulation trends that concern most insurance markets around the world, many companies will need to develop their own BMS. The main objective of the book is to provide them models to design BMS that meet their objectives. Part I of the book contains an overall presentation of the pros and cons of merit-rating, a case study and a review of the different probability distributions that can be used to model the number of claims in an automobile portfolio. In Part II, 30 systems from 22 different countries, are evaluated and ranked according to their `toughness' towards policyholders. Four tools are created to evaluate that toughness and provide a tentative classification of all systems. Then, factor analysis is used to aggregate and summarize the data, and provide a final ranking of all systems. Part III is an up-to-date review of all the probability models that have been proposed for the design of an optimal BMS. The application of these models would enable the reader to devise the system that is ideally suited to the behavior of the policyholders of his own insurance company. Finally, Part IV analyses an alternative to BMS; the introduction of a policy with a deductible.

            Book Description

This book offers a comprehensive treatment of the various experience rating systems applicable to automobile insurance and their relationships with risk classification. It also summarizes the most recent developments in the field, presenting ratemaking systems, whilst taking into account exogenous information. The book includes numerous illustrations using advanced statistical software to allow for a deep understanding of the concepts. It also offers all the actuarial techniques to design bonus-malus mechanisms. This is an extremely timely addition to the literature, as European directives recently introduced complete rating freedom, allowing companies to set up their own rates, select their own classification variables and design their own BMS. The book will prove a valuable supplement to Actuarial courses and professional insurance bodies.

                M. tuberculosis remains one of the most successful human pathogens known. The causative agent of tuberculosis, it also has an unique ability to persist for years in the infected, apparently healthy host. This dormant organism can be reactivated years, even decades later to cause tuberculosis. Knowledge regarding the interaction of M. tuberculosis with the host is fundamental to understanding the pathogenesis; leading eventually to the development of strategies for the prevention and control of infection and disease.

By integrating genetic, microbiologic, immunologic, and cell biologic approaches to elucidate pathogenesis, penetrating new insights into the interaction of M. tuberculosis with the host have emerged. This book reviews the most important state-of-the-art approaches currently used to study microbe-host interactions and highlights emerging methodologies. Strategies to analyze the following topics are included: mycobacterial entry, growth, and gene expression in macrophages; analysis of post-phagocytic events; analysis of signaling in infected macrophage; the acquired immune response; newer animal- and non animal-models systems; latency; and the epidemiology of M. tuberculosis infections.

3 out of 5 stars Average book with nice demos.......2005-08-25

The book can't be pointed as bad or good, the title tells everything, like the author says in the Introduction this book isnt the last one you should read for this field, its just a starting point, anyway I found it simple and you need to know some math and physics to get it all clear, besides that you have 6 nice demos with full code you can study and run for better understanding. Who wants to get a simple and clear basic concepts should get the book, others may prefer most complete titles.

                    2 out of 5 stars VERY bad.......2005-07-09

I bought this book hoping it would explain some of the math related to games, like vectors, quaternions, matrixes etc. and operations with them, the reason I chose this book was that I wanted one which didn't present advanced math in the first chapters.

The book fails at explaining anything at all and it doesn't just start at a WAY to basic level (I wouldn't have been surprised if the author explained multiplication).

In the chapter about trigenometry the author tries to apply what you have learned with an example of an flying arrow, (s)he doesn't even tell why it is like that just that if the arrow is shooten 50 units some way the shadow will be 25 units away from the shooter.

At first I thought it may be better later, but when the author says the following:
"Anything from a char, which can hold values from -128 and 127, to an unsigned long, which can hold values between 0 and 18,446,744,073,709,551,616 (or 2 to the power of 64)"
Here are two problems, first it is up to the compiler to choose whether char is signed or unsigned, this means it can also go from: 0-255, but the biggest mistake is to say that a long is 64 bit! How many bits a long is isn't defined in the standard and on most current compilers(MSVC++ 2003 .NET included) sizeof(long) is 32 bit.

I can't comment on the physics, matrixes etc. since I put down this book when I came to the chapter about vectors since it was just SO bad, this is why it didn't get 1 star.

For people want an alternative I recommend 3D Math Primer for Graphics and Game Development.

5 out of 5 stars some human errors, but priceless theory review!.......2005-01-04

I had read some of the reviews for this book and they focus on parts where almost all books have human errors, code or math examples, but the explaination of the theory is very well reviewed. This book is very well organized and explains very well the topics. This book is a very good book for begginers on games physics and math, its not a book for learning math, physics or programming, and by reading the reviews of the book you'll see what I meant, seems a lot of people misundestood the book title.

                    2 out of 5 stars Don't buy this book........2004-10-15

I was looking for a book with Math and Physics formulas and explenation how to use them in game programming. I saw this book and took a glance in it in the book store and it looked verry nice.
But it have been a big disappointment. The first two thirds of it is either verry simple (points and lines) or "strange" stuff like 3D rotation. If you are intrested in 3D game programming you proberbly don't buy a book for beginners. Also the structure of the book is verry wothless, it takes time to find what you are looking for.
I wold not recomend this if you are choosing between this book and another. I'll give it 2 two stars, and thats a high grade for it.

3 out of 5 stars Good and Bad.......2004-08-22

First on the good points. This book is great for beginner games programmers who lacked the mathematical and physics knowledge. The lessons were simple and easy to understand.

The bad points? Glaring errors everywhere. For example, the question would ask you what A + B in the diagram is when the diagram only shows F + G. Another one, the diagram shows [7,2] and the questions ask you things concerning [7,3]. This was supposedly meant to be for beginners, but with glaring errors such as this all over, it makes it an obstacle such to get down to learning the basics.

It would have been a great book for beginners like me if I hadn't later figure out that those simple problems I was trying to solve were actually printing errors.
