Book Description

Don't you wish you had what it takes to handle all the stuff that life serves up? Well you do - at least you did. You were once fully equipped to make life an incredible experience. The fact is that 98 percent of us are geniuses early in life, and almost all of us lose our genius. Is it lost forever? No. Champion of creative thinking, Marco Marsan will reunite you with your childhood creativity, your unbridled curiosity, and your exuberance for life. Each chapter will unlock the spirit of your childhood genius, buried deep within, as you attack fear - the main enemy of your childlike mental agility. Each exercise in the book is designed to help you undo years of negative conditioning. Marco operates on the premise that if we could think as nimbly as a child and combine that power with our adult library of knowledge, we would achieve life-and world-changing breaktrhoughs.

5 out of 5 stars Charge your batteries........2004-06-04

I recently finished Think Naked and have already passed it on to an older friend so he could re-awaken his imagination and recharge his creative batteries -- just as I did when reading Marco Marsan's book. This is the kind of book and message you share with your friends. If they read it as receptively and as openly as I did, it will remind them that they are intrinsically creative -- and if they allow their inner child to emerge, they will unlock inhibitions, pre-conceptions and blocks to their creativity. It's also fun to read and fun to discuss. It is a book that should find its way into the hands of old-school managers. Many of Marsan's lists and "exercises" might be incorporated into managerial and in-house training sessions or they could be used as the basis of a course in creativity and problem solving. If you are a witness to small-box thinking among your peers or long to escape, to try new things, to bolster and sustain your creativity, then pick up Think Naked.

This books joins my six-foot shelf of books related to creativity, design, communication and the creative process. I've read books by Johnson, de Bono, Norman, Jakob Nielsen, Buckminster Fuller, Tufte, Christopher Alexander and Papenek. Incidentally, the other morning my friend came into the cafe with it under his arm, punctuated by an ornate, tasseled bookmark. I thought he was carrying his missal with him. It gave me a hint as to just how enmeshed he was in his reading.

We could all use a daily brain wedgie to remind us that we have the potential to use our brains and skills in ways that are ordinarily passed by because they are "too far out" or have some kind of taboo associated with them. I was reminded of an essay I wrote many years ago, entitled, "Put Grandmother in the Crib" - based on Edward de Bono's solution to the problem of the baby inconveniencing grandma, as she knitted and napped. It was to put the baby on the carpet and grandmother in the crib.

As a retiree and volunteer to local groups, I've gone one step further and have made more of an effort to surround myself with smart people and SMEs (subject matter experts). If you let yourself be dumbed down by the popular press and popular culture, your inner child will be stifled and inhibited. Don't let it happen to you. Read Think Naked and recharge your batteries and feel the fire that burns inside.

5 out of 5 stars Re-discover Your Child-like Brilliance.......2003-11-23

First off, I have to say that I agree with the other reviewer regarding editing: the Jodere group consistently publishes books with very bad editing, sometimes using several semi-colons in one sentence...ALL the time. Aggravating. 5 Stars for content, zero for editing.

Shoddy editorship aside, the information in this book is helpful and even fascinating. Author, marketer, corporate anarchist, and founder of Marco Polo Explorers, Marco Marsan was named one of America's top Out-of-the-Box thinkers by the Mazda Corporation. Think Naked came out earlier this year, and it's a delightful book about re-discovering child-like brilliance. Marsan has something interesting things to say on the inside flap of his book: "Dr. Seuss once described adults as 'obsolete children'. Extensive studies show that there is a 98 percent chance you were a creative genius before age four. Business week magazine says that a 40-year old adult is about two percent as creative as a five-year-old child. Findings like these tell us that creative genius isn't something you find--it's something that you've merely, and perhaps, only temporarily lost." Some chapters in this book include You Were A Genius:Discovering the childlike brilliance you were born with, See Saw:Balancing the combination of kidlike genius with your adult wealth of experience, Wear Your Cape:How to create conditions that encourage risk-taking without fear, and Show And Tell:How to get in touch with your passions and your exuberance.

Throughout the book, Marsan gives fascinating examples from scientific studies, pop-culture, trends, nature, and other sources to illustrate just how in the box many of us remain--especially when it comes to personal satisfaction and creativity.

This book is a lot of fun to read, and stimulates thinking outside of conventional, plodding thought patterns. Refreshing and bold, it's sure to be a welcome addition for the library of a manager or business professional, and for anyone wanting to infuse the zest of new perspectives into their lives.

What a truly inspirational book! A MUST read for the uptight, uninspired, tired, bored, same-ol'-same-ol' one in your life. Can't see the forest yourself anymore? Read it! (Then buy a copy for your boss because he surely needs it more than you!!).

Thanks, Marco!

Marcan's book is a reasonably interesting re-take on the zillion creativity and anti-burnout books that have gone before. It's certainly worth a read if your brain needs a little juice to get out of a rut. That is, as long as you can get past the shoddy editing and notes written in an almost unreadable typeface with a stained-paper background.

Leveraged buyouts, stock swaps, megamergers--behind every spectacular, headline-making deal you've read about in the last two decades, there were real, live people risking their careers to buy companies, or combine them.

Daniel Kadlec, financial columnist for Time magazine, lines up nine of the biggest dealmakers of our era and profiles the most important deal of each man's career. He keeps most of the focus on the transactions themselves, but also tries to attach a human face to business-page staples like Carl Icahn, Hugh McColl, and Sumner Redstone. He succeeds, to an extent; we come away at least with a feeling of what it's like to engage in conversation with these corporate titans. For example, there's a rather chilling encounter with Icahn that helps illustrate why he was such a cold-blooded success as a corporate-takeover artist.

Readers will probably end up liking most of these guys. Hugh McColl, for example, waited until his NationsBank was bigger than Bank of America before he merged the two, even though he could've done the deal several years earlier. He comes off not just as a man with brass between his legs, but also as one with unusual integrity.

But no matter how you feel about these sometimes cutthroat men and the business moves they've made, you can't help but learn from them: how to improve weak bargaining positions, how to invest in out-of-favor industries, how to adapt to changing times--or, if you have the courage and vision, how to change the times to suit you. --Lou Schuler

Book Description

Meet the men and minds that have ignited the greatest decade of deal making in the history of business

In the 1980s Tom Wolfe coined the term "masters of the universe" for hard-charging Wall Streeters. In the '90s, that term is applied broadly to the takeover pros behind a decade of stunning mergers and acquisitions. The decade produced more than $8 trillion in M&A, far more than the $2.4 trillion in the "decade of greed." Daniel J. Kadlec, Time magazine's Wall Street columnist, quizzed nine top guns about the strategies they used to pull off the greatest deals in history. The result is a penetrating portrait of how business is done at its highest level, with insights and lessons for everyone. Masters Of the Universe will open your eyes to the brave new world of deal making.

The Deal Makers

  • Hugh McColl with his gripping tale of buying BankAmerica
  • Sandy Weill on how he pulled off the Citicorp-Travelers merger
  • Stephen Bollenbach on the rocky road to breaking up Marriott Corp.
  • Carl Icahn with the inside story of his showdown with Texaco

5 out of 5 stars The most important lesson to learn from this book is..........2003-01-24

This book does a great job showing how an assortment of business people from different industries became successful in their careers. The most important lesson to learn from this book is that many of these business people came from a similar background to your own and you too could have the success they did. This book does not give a large amount of detail as to how each businessperson became successful, but it still gives an excellent high-level view.

    4 out of 5 stars Good read.......2001-09-29

Masters of the Universe is a very good airplane/bedroom compilation. It's really a history of the "great" business innovators and shakers during the late 19th and 20th century. Each "mover" is 10-12 pages long. If you like history and business, this should be very educational.

2 out of 5 stars skimming the surface.......2001-05-25

As a business writer, I fruitfully used this book as the barest presentation of the facts before going to do a heavy reporting project. However, had I not spent some time with one of the protagonists in this book and then a great deal more with his associates, I would never have clearly understood what they actually do and how they work. As it stands, this book offers a quick and dirty intro to the biggest dealmakers of their time. While some background and explanations are offered, it leaves out the gritty details and true complexity of what goes on in these huge and often risky deals. That disappointed me about this book more and more as I delved into my work.

Kadlec also adopts a kind of chummy tone with these guys, like they are bar pals as well as subjects for his work, and so you wonder what he may have left out to protect his professional relationships. He barely questions what they do and never really broaches the questions of ethics, as if such considerations don't exist; well, they do, and the people I spoke to were informed and concerned about ethics.

So this is merely a superficial trade-journalistic treatment. While this has merit, it is rather more like a vanilla milkshake than the full meal I had hoped for. I wanted deeper info, but then I was preparing to enter on a several-month project about a field I knew little about when I started.

The writing is also not very good, and lengthy interviews are included verbatim, which is a shoddy way to beef up the text to little purpose.

    Not strongly recommended.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of time.......2001-05-15

I must admit to being utterly disappointed with this book. So much so, that I skipped most of it and ultimately decided it to be a waste of time. Spelling errors, repetitive language and uninteresting commentary seem to be a consistent theme in this book. I would neither recommend its purchase, nor borrowing it from a friend. Don't waste your time.

4 out of 5 stars A fine read for business book readers.......2000-05-11

I like books that summarize outstanding businessmen. Sometimes I learn something. Sometimes I'm just entertained. This book does not contain massive new information but it entertained me and I learned something. While I recommend the book, it is not in the top 10 business books I have read.

    Book Description

Can a girl get an abortion in Texas without her parent's consent? Are parents liable for damages when their teenager crashes the family car into a neighbor's Mercedes? What happens when grandparents help a noncustodial parent hide a child from the parent with legal custody?

Ramona John tells it like it is in this non-lawyer's guide to all areas of Texas law affecting children. Using layman's language and a quick-reference, question-and-answer format, she offers expert advice about dealing with lawyers and judges and about using the law to protect and serve children. Texas parents, grandparents, teachers, and health care and social service providers will find this an authoritative guide to their legal rights and responsibilities regarding children.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A good start, but, not quite enough..........2001-03-20

I know this book is about child's laws, but, I find it hopelessly flawed when it comes to parental rights and how to protect your rights. If a parent loses their rights, it affects the children. I think there should be a chapter on how to protect yourself during a CPS investigation. The author doesn't really acknowledge that CPS is sometimes wrong and sometimes show a blatant disregard to the rights of the parents and the child. Those issued should be addressed. However, it does seem to cover the judicial process pretty well. Has some good information in all other areas. I think for the price there should be more. I would NOT make this the only book in your library.

    5 out of 5 stars Invaluable!.......1999-10-06

I found Ramona John's book informative and invaluable. It is a handy reference for anyone contemplating divorce or concerned about custody, abuse, or parental rights since it covers all aspects of problems likely to be encountered. Concisely and clearly, she explains, among other things, parental rights and duties, getting an attorney for your child, what to expect in a courtroom, how to make a favorable impression on a judge or jury, how paternity is established, adoption is decided, when parental rights can be terminated, and when abuse can be suspected. Disabled children and their special needs are also considered. Although it is written for Texans, I believe this information is probably applicable nationwide. Adults can gain insights and find understanding about themselves in the section covering the effects of abandonment and neglect. I highly recommend this book to anyone faced with the predicament of divorce or concerned with abuse of a child.

5 out of 5 stars The nightmares of every parent are dealt with in this book........1999-09-21

Lucky is the parent who can raise a child in today's world without at least one brush with the law. Even if your child never commits a crime, with two out of three marriages ending in divorce, there are issues of custody and child support that must be legally resolved. What if your child runs away from home or is caught dealing drugs? What if you are deemed an abusive or negligent parent and the law steps in to remove your child from the home? When your child is in trouble, wouldn't it be wonderful to be able to talk to a personal friend who just happens to be a retired juvenile court judge? Not many of us have a friend like that, but the next best thing is Ramona John's book "Children and the Law in Texas -- What Parents Should Know." In a non-threatening, conversational tone, John helps the reader understand the nuances of the juvenile justice system. "Get comfortable, this will take a while," she advises before answering a particularly knotty question on paternity. Personal observations and anecdotes are a helpful reminder that even judges are human. Some, like John, are warm and human. The question-and-answer format makes it easy for parents to concentrate on the subject matter even when they may be under stress because of their child's circumstances. The chapter "Keeping Your Child out of Trouble" is worth the price of the book even if you don't live in Texas. Reading it could prevent that dreaded brush with the law that is every parent's nightmare. The best parents may know the guidelines of parental behavior intuitively, but for the rest of us, John's list is a succinct reminder and a starting point for discussion. While good parents teach their children they are responsible for their own acts, that, unfortunately, is not the case where illegal acts by minors are concerned. The question of whether and to what extent parents can be held responsible for their children's acts was thrust into the national conscience by the Columbine school shootings. By giving you an idea of what the law says about parent/child relationships and responsibilities, the book could save you time and money when you need to consult a lawyer. The book will be an eye-opener if you don't know the answers to questions like these: Can a child have more than one presumed biological father? If you face a situation where you must hire an attorney for your child, do you have the right to be present every time your child speaks to the attorney? Do you know the difference between Teen Court and juvenile court? After reading John's book, one can only wish that she could be the designated "explainer" in charge of re-writing the juvenile justice and family codes all over America so they can be understood by ordinary people. After that, she could tackle the federal tax code.

These technical guidelines have been developed to support sections of FAO's Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries addressing responsible fisheries management (Article 7), aquaculture development (Article 9), international trade (Article 11) and fisheries research (Article 12). The objective of these guidelines is to assist countries in reducing the risk of introduction and spread of serious transboundary aquatic animal diseases. Although they deal primarily with safe transboundary movement at the international level, they are also applicable to domestic movements between different provinces, geographical areas or zones of differing disease status.

              Book Description

Mary Swander was a lapsed Catholic content with the solitude and tenuous spirituality of a life tied to the Iowa prairie and its seasons. But when a car accident left her paralyzed and in chronic pain with no medical cure in sight, she was forced to look inside herself for strength and for meaning. In The Desert Pilgrim she chronicles her miraculous physical recovery and her even more astonishing restoration of faith in the modern world.

It is when she arrives to teach at the University of New Mexico that Mary's journey begins in earnest. In Albuquerque she encounters Father Sergei, a Russian Orthodox monk whose barrio church is hidden away on the once-proud Route 66, now the terrain of crack dealers and the homeless. She meets a curandera, "Lu," an herbal healer whose little pharmacy's first owner rode with Pancho Villa. Together these two will lead her to confront her growing distrust of medical and spiritual authority, and her own dark night of the soul. Evocatively and reflectively written, The Desert Pilgrim weaves together history, herbal medicine, physical healing, and what it means-in this modern age-to believe

1 out of 5 stars Good in Idea but Not in Execution.......2006-07-30

As a New Mexico resident and a lover of the desert, I had high hopes for this book when I plucked it off a shelf and bought it based on the description on back. Clearly the author's story is poignant and inspiring, but that really gets lost in barely mediocre writing. Swander grossly minimizes details related to New Mexico and its cultures, and she does the same with her descriptions of mystical figures and religion, and these sort of bald descriptions & generalizations really weaken the power of the story and her credibility as a writer. This propensity also makes the story feel unfocused and unguided. The book just doesn't read very authentically. I wish I had a different experience reading it, but I didn't.

5 out of 5 stars Meaningful and Inspiring.......2004-01-25

Swander does some important legwork for everyone who has suffered chronic illness and/or pain and wondered why, why, why, and how can I be healed ?!
She describes her journey to New Mexico and her hopes for finding healing there, but she discovers so much more than healing. She shares with us the wisdom of a Catholic monk, a woman with a gift for prescribing herbal remedies, and mystics such as Hildegard of Bingen, St. John of the Cross, Teresa of Avila, and St. Francis. The book also touches on other topics such as the medical establishment, meditation, the history of women healers, and relevant episodes of the author's family life. This book is a wonderful treat stuffed full of inspirational messages, information and ideas that most of us can relate to.

              5 out of 5 stars A Healing Journey.......2003-12-07

In The Desert Pilgrim, Iowan Mary Swander shares her journey from debilitating illness to physical and spiritual healing with the help of an Orthodox monk and an herbal healer in an Albuquerque barrio. Swander doesn't exaggerate the extent of her recovery or the power of her regained faith, yet there is no doubt she has been transformed by this experience and by the wisdom and generosity of Lu and Father Sergei. Swander's writing is clear and accessible, and her story is an inspiration.

                  Book Description

Complex environmental problems are often reduced to an inappropriate level of simplicity. While this book does not seek to present a comprehensive scientific and technical coverage of all aspects of the subject matter, it makes the issues, ideas, and language of environmental engineering accessible and understandable to the nontechnical reader.
Improvements introduced in the fourth edition include a complete rewrite of the chapters dealing with risk assessment and ethics, the introduction of new theories of radiation damage, inclusion of environmental disasters like Chernobyl and Bhopal, and general updating of all the content, specifically that on radioactive waste.

Since this book was first published in 1972, several generations of students have become environmentally aware and conscious of their responsibilities to the planet earth. Many of these environmental pioneers are now teaching in colleges and universities, and have in their classes students with the same sense of dedication and resolve that they themselves brought to the discipline. In those days, it was sometimes difficult to explain what indeed environmental science or engineering was, and why the development of these fields was so important to the future of the earth and to human civilization. Today there is no question that the human species has the capability of destroying its collective home, and that we have indeed taken major steps toward doing exactly that.

And yet, while, a lot has changed in a generation, much has not. We still have air pollution; we still contaminate our water supplies; we still dispose of hazardous materials improperly; we still destroy natural habitats as if no other species mattered. And worst of all, we still continue to populate the earth at an alarming rate. There is still a need for this book, and for the college and university courses that use it as a text, and perhaps this need is more acute now than it was several decades ago.

Although the battle to preserve the environment is still raging, some of the rules have changed. We now must take into account risk to humans, and be able to manipulate concepts of risk management. With increasing population, and fewer alternatives to waste disposal, this problem is intensified. Environmental laws have changed, and will no doubt continue to evolve. Attitudes toward the environment are often couched in what has become known as the environmental ethic. Finally, the environmental movement has become powerful politically, and environmentalism can be made to serve a political agenda.

In revising this book, we have attempted to incorporate the evolving nature of environmental sciences and engineering by adding chapters as necessary and eliminating material that is less germane to today's students. We have nevertheless maintained the essential feature of this book -- to package the more important aspects of environmental engineering science and technology in an organized manner and present this mainly technical material to a nonengineering audience.

This book has been used as a text in courses which require no prerequisites, although a high school knowledge of chemistry is important. A knowledge of college level algebra is also useful, but calculus is not required for the understanding of the technical and scientific concepts.

We do not intend for this book to be scientifically and technically complete. In fact, many complex environmental problems have been simplified to the threshold of pain for many engineers and scientists. Our objective, however, is not to impress nontechnical students with the rigors and complexities of pollution control technology but rather to make some of the language and ideas of environmental engineering and science more understandable.

Ideal for the student taking courses in this field who does not have an extensive engineering, mathematical, or environmental background.

I continue to use this book as a practical and teaching resource. It is a good balance between the science and engineering aspects of environmental quality. The examples and problems are understandable for most undergraduates, and can be adapted to be more quantitative, if needed.

I used this book as base for teaching of Environmental Technologies at university. It is really good, easy to follow and addresses the main aspects of environmental pollution control. The only aspect that it does not cover is soil pollution. One strong point: the figures, graphs, exercises are very good!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to environmental pollution issues.......2000-10-21

This was a text book for my Environmental Security class. I learned a heckuva lot, and I really enjoyed reading it, too. It's well organized and helps you understand some technical issues relating to the environment without going over the non-technical major's head. The study/homework questions at the end of each chapter weren't too difficult and helped a lot in learning the material.

                  Book Description

The material presented in this invaluable textbook has been tested in two courses. One of these is a graduate-level survey of statistical physics; the other, a rather personal perspective on critical behavior. Thus, this book defines a progression starting at the book-learning part of graduate education and ending in the midst of topics at the research level. To supplement the research-level side the book includes some research papers. Several of these are classics in the field, including a suite of six works on self-organized criticality and complexity, a pair on diffusion-limited aggregation, some papers on correlations near critical points, a few of the basic sources on the development of the real-space renormalization group, and several papers on magnetic behavior in a plain geometry. In addition, the author has included a few of his own papers.

I would never, ever call this book a 'solid basis' for statistical mechanics--that's Landau, or Sommerfeld.

What Kadanoff does do, like other great theorists, is make the field seem real. For instance, Feynman's diagrams don't add anything new to the mathematics, but they set the idea into focus in a way that makes you think differently about the real world. Before Gell-Mann, chromodynamics was just a mathematical idea: reading him makes you think there's really particles. And who really understood polarization until reading Dirac?

Kadanoff does that for critical phenomena. Even when he covers the material in a uselessly glossy way, he sets the theory on its feet and opens up the idea for more work. I've gotten tons of ideas from reading him.

4 out of 5 stars Perhaps to be inproved in subsequent editions.......2001-07-12

This book is a solid basis for a course in statistical mechanics. Since it was a first edition, there were many typographical errors that made some of the reading a little sketchy in parts. IF you have the patientence to sit down and derive some of the more important results that Kadanoff glosses over, you will greatly benefit from the book. It is a solid book, complete in it's presentation of the material. At time his notation can be a bit unorthordox and can take getting used to, especially for those who are more strict in their "mathematical hygene." One very nice features of the book is that the level of the problems lends themselves very well to a course. In other words an instructor won't have to make up his/her own pwoblems for the most part.
