Solid if you need a refresher, unsuited if you need to learn it.......2006-08-16
If you have previously studied and largely understood algebra and trigonometry and just need a quick review, then this book is right for you. However, if you haven't studied these topics or didn't understand them the first time, then it will be of little value. The coverage is thorough in breadth, starting with the basics of adding and subtracting all types of numbers through logarithms, exponential functions and trigonometry. Only a few pages are devoted to each topic with exercises at the end of each section. Solutions to some of the exercises are given at the end, although in my opinion there should have been more.
While the explanations are short, to the extent that it is possible in a small number of pages, they are through in depth. In a section that I found interesting, the dy/dx notation for a derivative is used. However, knowledge of calculus is not required, the reader is simply being asked to algebraically solve for dy/dx rather than use any knowledge of what it represents. Used in the manner for which it was intended this book is an effective tool in the study of precalculus material.
Note: This book is nearly identical to the companion book, "Just-In-Time: Algebra & Trigonometry for Early Transcendental Calculus." It would be a waste of money to buy both.
Wow ... great book!!.......2006-04-12
This book is totally great. I've seen very few books that explain mathematical concepts as well as this. The authors actually made math look easy by providing a lot of examples and writing in a more conversational, informal style (like the style in the Idiot's Guides series). It's a lot clearer than Barron's and Cliffs. Often there is a lot of humor added in.
As the title of this book indicates, this book is intended for calculus students in college who are struggling in their courses. However, for high school students who are using this book to teach themselves new concepts or using this as a tutorial, review, etc. I would recommend this as a supplement to another text. The book is somewhat brief and does not go through the advanced and nitty-gritry areas of algebra and trigonometry. This is intended to be a remedial "catch-up" book and is not targeted specifically towards the hig school student. But high school students, teachers, and curious readers will all find this book very helpful for making hard math look simple.
Cheap, highly-focused and useful review for calculus.......2003-12-02
I'd taken Calculus ten years ago and needed to retake it. After working through 'Forgotten Algebra', this book was a godsend. It's B.S.-free and highly focused on what you need BEFORE Calculus. If you buy the first edition used (as I did), then it's cheap.
Best book for review.......2001-06-02
These guys are geniuses for presetnting complex information in a digestable, direct, witty, and accurate manner. Great for remembering forgotten trig and algebra. Awesome calc primer.
I salute a rare erudite math professor who can actually teach. Where can we find more? My school is full of passive aggressive math professors who know their stuff but cant teach.
thank you for the help

Exceptionally clear and relevant. Thank YOU,just in time!.......2004-10-18
This looks like the work of a talented and experienced pedagogue, with a tremenduously organized mind.
Crystal clear short introductory explanations, proper sequence of approaching different geometry chapters, relevant exercises,in short a geometry bible for a student and a welcome refresher for anybody.
I am an enginner, and I always loved geometry , but I found myself at loss of words when to explain my grade-8 kid parts of it.
But this is the life-saving book that makes geometry very, very easy to understand. It had a huge positive impact on my kid's geometry knowledge.I cannot believe my luck in finding it.
I would recommend it to any school as grade 7 & 8 textbook.
Thank you.

New York Times bestselling author Vicki Lewis Thompson proves that things aren't always better with age . . .
When twenty-year-old PR exec Kasey Braddock accepts her co-workers' dare to hit on the gorgeous new landscaper, she's excited. Finally here's her chance to prove to her friends -- and herself -- that she's woman enough to entice a man and leave him drooling. After all, she's old enough to know what she wants -- and she wants Sam Ashton . . .badly.
And Sam is more than willing to be wanted. The chemistry between them is powerful, explosive. Still, there's something vaguely familiar about Kasey, something Sam can't put his finger on -- although he's dying to get his hands all over her . . .But he's not worried. He fully intends to enjoy uncovering all Kasey's secrets, one by one. But will the truth be too hot for him to handle?

Good read. Vicki Lewis Thompson gives another great read.
Hot Romance Novel!.......2005-06-29
This is a really hot read - good, sizzling hot scenes between Kasey and Sam. She recognizes him as one of her older step-brother's friends, but knows that he doesn't recognize her. He also doesn't realize how old she is - she is only 20 - but managed to graduate college early because she is super smart and skipped grades in school. This doesn't bother her since she plans to leave it at a one night stand, but he has other ideas - forever ideas - until he finds out just how young she really is - then the tables are turned and she has to try to convince him that she is old enough to know what she wants and mature enough to settle down. Another excellent read by Vicki Lewis Thompson.
Old Enough to Know Better.......2004-07-20
I thought this book was really good. The perfect quick & easy summer read for the beach or pool. I will defiantly be reading more of Vicki Lewis Thompson.
entertaining contemporary romance.......2004-05-26
At Beckworth Public Relations, the women are drooling over a hunk from Ashton landscaping. They decide to play the straw game with the babe that draws the biggest having to find a way to make the dude drool from desire. Kasey Braddock wins the contest. Although she would prefer to have not entered, her image means everything in the upscale youthful modern PR office; thus, she grabs a bottle of water to introduce herself to the stud as a happening chick "so redy".
Kasey recognizes Sam Ashton, who she had a crush on years ago when he was the friend of her older stepbrother, but he does not recognize the beautiful woman giving him the water. He had noticed her earlier and sees this opportunity to ask her out, which she accepts. Not long afterward, she remains committed to his drooling one time, but he wants her for all time.
This entertaining contemporary romance starts as a fun read with the office women salivating over visiting hunks while the men are stunned with how far the females will go with the games. When the lead couple begins dating, the plot deftly switches gear so that the audience can see what motivates the protagonists. Of major enjoyment is to watch Sam realize that the woman he is falling in love is not the image of hip that Kasey portrays, but the kindhearted caring soul that she really is though the target of his affection cannot believe he recognized her inner essence. Fans will appreciate this fine tale.

Product Description
She is Old Enough to Know Better but young enough to still try and Justin Anderson is sorely tempting her resolve never to love again.
Book Description
The author finds grievous fault with democracy and favours most of the seven deadly sins. He approves of arranged marriages but expresses absolute faith in the power of love. He laments the fading of family. He has come to believe that the soul exists independent of mind, personality and genes and, like St. Paul, he sees love and charity as the greatest power in our world.
Old Enough to Know Better is written in part as a message to descendants he will never meet, in part to people of the western world today who, he insists, are descending rapidly into a fascist tyranny. His observations and pronouncements are threaded on accounts of personal experiences as a newspaper editor and columnist, politician, diplomat, police commissioner, husband, father, wet-fly fisherman and wing shot. This is a book like no other St. Pierre has written. Nobody will agree with all of it. His tail would kink if some did.

Book Description
Popular children's musician Barry Louis Polisar takes a look back at his least favorite songs from his own 1970s-era albums and reworks them into brand new tunes in this two-CD compilation. Hitting the studio to tackle the "worst" from his back catalog, Polisar has re-recorded the songs and added instruments, branching out into completely new musical directions with studio help from his teenaged kids—themselves the subjects of some of his most "awful" songs.

Book Description
Sports are perhaps the most visible expression of the ideals of masculinity in our society, and figure as a training ground on which young boys are taught what it means to be a man. Given the involvement of sports with masculinity, the homosexual athlete becomes a paradox, and the recent explosive growth of gay sporting leagues, a puzzle.
Pronger explores the paradoxical position of the gay athlete in a straight sporting world, examines the homoerotic undercurrent subliminally present in the masculine struggle of sports, and explicates the growth of gay sports in the framework of the developing gay culture.
Customer Reviews:
Where's the juicy stuff???.......2005-09-21
A book that lets you "in" on the secret of locker room sex, but the author seems more amazed that this actually goes on and exist in real life. I bet when he discovered that there was men to men sex in the showers after a game he decided to write the book. What about all the affairs these players have amongst themselves (yet manage to keep it on a downlow). and what about the groopies that service or relieve these testesterone fill athletes in the locker-rooms? From ancient times (read The Greek Way by Edith Hamilton) there has been alot of sexual activity in the background of sports. If you werent straight and had the opportunity to share in that wouldn't you also be part of or a product of it?
Earnest study of a hot topic.......2003-12-08
Brian Pronger's 1992 book still remains interesting today. For most of the first part Pronger constructs his thesis methodically and earnestly: that homosexuality is a subversion of the basic patriarchal structure of Western society, that mandates the power and domination of men over women. Conventional masculine sports represents a heightening of patriarchal expression, notably in the violence of contact sports such as football and hockey. Thus, the gay man (and the book is exclusively about gay men) involved in sports finds himself caught in a paradox, simultaneously subverting the orthodox patriarchy while in many cases worshipping the conventional masculine ideal.
Pronger's views are convincing, though the reader may feel that he takes too long to build his case. However, the book has many excerpts from interviews with gay athletes and gay men who are simply interested in sports, and these anecdotes lend immediacy and interest to the sometimes rather dry analysis. They also, one must admit, are frequently hot, as are the copious illustrations. Pronger's succinct description of the psychological significance of the jockstrap is a classic of its kind. All in all, Pronger's book offers titillation and elucidation in equal, satisfying parts.
The Arena of Maculinity.......1999-12-22
I think this book is very well researched and extremely interesing, although at times it felt as if the author fell in the realm of "orthodoxy" that he was analyzing and deconstructing. Tough subject, though, for as the author intelligently describes, sports are another tool of the patriarchal orthodox social/economical system, and as consequence, people without an acceptable role in that system really have no place, in some sports at least. In my opinion, the best thing about this book is the thorough analysis that the author makes about how our culture created and struggles to maintain the patriachal system which opresses mainly women and anyone else who does not fit in neatly. An excellent read, could not put it down.
An excellent overview of the masculine sports stereotype.......1998-06-06
I had doubts when purchasing this book, but found it to be very well researched and easy to understand. Full of interesting quotes and interviews I would highly recomend it to any individual interested in the realtionship between sports and athletes, be they straight or gay. A most excellent book and one that has been badly needed in the area of gay studies.

Welcome to the exciting world of game programming! If you're already familiar with the C++ programming language and want to learn how to program games, this book is for you. Game Programming in C++: Start to Finish will help you learn how to turn your own game fantasies into playable realities! Over the course of the book, you'll learn the popular techniques and practices behind today's games. Not only will you add a lot of theory to your game programming toolkit, but you'll also create a small basic game from scratch - SuperAsteriodArena. While you'll focus on using the SDL and the OpenGL libraries to learn game programming, you'll also learn the essential Windows principles that you'll need to create just about any kind of game with any other API such as DirectX. This easy-to-follow book takes current game programming information and filters it down to a practical level. Each chapter and subsection builds upon previous chapters and topics in a tutorial format, allowing you to progress at your own pace. As you work through the book, you'll build the SuperAsteriodArena game, beginning with engine creation and 3D programming with SDL and OpenGL. From there you'll move on to animation effects, audio, collision detection, networking, and finalizing the game. A variety of tools are used throughout, including Visual Studio and OpenGL, SDL, Autodesk 3ds Max, and the Audacity sound tool.
Customer Reviews:
designing games.......2007-09-07
This programming book was just what my son was wanting. He thinks it will really help refine his gaming progams.
Made me Dizzy.......2007-03-20
It's ironic that a programmer would be so terrible at giving directions. To start out with, the directions for setting up SDL (a necessary programming toolkit) were almost non-existant. Just this small task took me 8+ hours, and I had to resort to browsing web-forums!
Often the directions were so terrible that it wasn't even clear whether or not he'd just given directions for a procedure or was just providing an example. As a programmer, the author should be able to give sequential, succinct, and easily-followable directions. At this, the author, unfortunately, fails miserably.
Avoid This Book.......2006-08-21
I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone who is trying to start out in game programming. I am a grad student engineer and have been programming for over 5 years. I just recently got into game and graphics programming and this book is really terrible compared to some others I've seen. The only reason I gave it two stars is because the chapter on graphics mathematics is fairly complete, and the book provides a good high level picture of how a game is structured. However, the code specifics are downright horrible, the listings seem to be randomly thrown in without any clue as to where they should go in an actual program, the writing is boring, the directions are sparse and inchoerent, and much of the source code provided on the CD is incredibly difficult to get running (if it runs at all). Also, there is a discussion board on wazoo, but don't excpect much help. Many of the forums end with unanswered questions including many that I had. For an intro book to programming games, save your money for another book, because this book just isn't worth the cost in wasted time and money.
A graded learning approach.......2006-04-14
Erik Yuzwa's GAME PROGRAMMING IN C++: START TO FINISH will lend particularly well to prior C++ programmers and users who want to learn game programming. Chapters use current game programming information and take a lesson plan graded learning approach to building an entire course in C++ game programming, from the basics to creating a complete game.
Fairly good.......2006-03-26
Overall, the book is fairly useful. However, it lacks several things:
1. Contains many snippets of code that cannot be determined where they go
2. Constantly uses forward-slashes (/) instead of backslashes (\) for filenames (even if outside of code).
3. Does not justify certain variable names; ie a local variable one would normally call "fontSize", he calls "m_pFontSize".
4. What exactly is something such as a "PNFGLGETQUERYOBJECTIVEARBPROC"? He uses types like this alot, but never says what they are (even in the introduction to OpenGL).
