Excellent work ........2002-09-03
Many of us think that we are good at dealing with office dilemmas but when it actually happens to us we are at odds end and so I have immense praise for this work.
It will definitely make life better because we use these tricks and tips to navigate the difficult times when we come under pressure. Some of us may pretend that we dont give a damn but at the end of the day we do take the worry home.
Only the wise will handle it well in the different scenarios.

Charles E. Watson, Ph.D., describes a variety of problems that can occur at work and tells you how “smart people” deal with them effectively. By smart, he means “good,” his point being that good is smart. He organizes his management-oriented scenarios according to a series of themes that highlight the best policies to adopt, such as sticking to your principles, accurately weighing your options and seeking to do what’s right, not what’s popular. The book mixes behavioral tips with solutions to problems, emphasizing the need to be trustworthy and responsible and to follow the path of morality and integrity. Sometimes the book seems scattered, since the author distances the solutions from the dilemmas by dropping tips in between them, but the point and purpose survive this wrinkle. Since we at [web address]— like most of you — find it pretty easy to advocate goodness, truth and fair dealing, we liked Watson’s approach. Funny how doing the right thing turns out to be practical.
When Stupid People Get Book Deals........2001-03-31
Wow. I never thought I'd get a chance to write a negative review of a book, because my ability to pick personal winners has served me so well in the past. However, I caught this hardcover on sale and now I know why it was so cheap: it's terrible.
The format is basic: a dilemma, one or more tips, and a solution. Some of these dilemmas are so obvious that you wonder if the 'smart people' in the title is just a trap for large egos.
The tips are likewise obvious and of little help, but the maddening solutions cement my opinion. There is nothing written about how the solution actually worked in reality, so the reader is left to wonder if the dopey tips or solutions were of any use or not.
If I wrote this, I'd be embarassed. In fact, I'm embarassed about reading it, but since it's now part of the bathroom reading material (no more perfect venue than that), it makes for a good laugh or two.

Good overview of the E-bay auctions.......2001-03-02
Well written and informative. Would recomend as a first book on auctions.Covers some hmtl commands.
Getting Started on eBay.......2000-08-26
This book focuses almost entirely on eBay. The truly authoritative Internet auction book would cover at least the top three open auctions (eBay, Yahoo! and Amazon) and the top three store auctions (egghead, onsale and ubid). That said, although this is more of a "how to use eBay" book than anything, it does offer great advice on online auctions, including the ins and outs of "professional" auction selling, and Elliot clearly knows his stuff.
Super-easy read will give reader confidence to jump right in.......2000-06-01
"Getting started in Internet Auctions" is a super-easy read that will give readers enough confidence to jump right into the electronic auction arena. Author Alan Elliott begins the book with an overview of the auction process, then moves into detailed step-by-step descriptions of both the bidding and selling process. Using the popular Ebay.com site for his example, Elliott tells what web addresses to enter into your browser, which software buttons to push and even sometimes when to push them.
The best value in this book comes from the wealth of "tricks of the trade:" How to find real bargains on the auction block that others have overlooked. How to time bids in order to maximize winning the sought-after item. How to find items to sell beyond those crammed in the back of your closet. How to avoid getting ripped-off by the top twenty ploys perpetrated by the occasional less-than honest folks in the digital market place As an extra bonus, Elliott introduces readers to a handful of successful web-auction entrepreneurs who are making their living off their Ebay efforts and explains several strategies for mirroring their success. Content like this makes this book a confidence-builder for even a novice Internet user. Anybody interested in making or spending a buck in Internet auctions should put a bid down on this book.
A Great Introduction to eBay and other Internet Auctions.......2000-05-18
This book is a good way to quickly learn about eBay and other internet auctions from the inside out. It is more than just a point here, click there type of book. It gives you the thinking behind strategies for both buying and selling. The stories in the chapter about how people make a living on eBay are quite interesting. Worth the read!

Book Description
The
BioQUEST Library is an academic, peer-reviewed publication of electronic curricular materials published in annual volumes (the 1998
BioQUEST Library being the fifth volume). Each edition includes new and revised modules, additional supporting tools and materials, and large compilations of scientific data sets.
The fifty-plus software simulations, tools, data sets, and other supporting materials in ecology, evolution, genetics, molecular biology, physiology, developmental biology, and botany contribute to a flexible problem-solving space for investigations that can be limited or quite sophisticated and challenging. In each of the modules, the students craft a research question, pursue solutions to their problem, and finally decide on their criteria for closure and publication, just as scientists do.
The materials nominated for inclusion in the
BioQUEST Library must have the potential to catalyze curricular change; for example, they must have a significantly robust problem space, the potential for students to pursue multiple hypotheses simultaneously, and the ability to generate and analyze large data sets. The modules must also be open-ended in the respect that they must require students to assess the completeness of their problem-solving endeavors and the validity and utility of their answers.
Key Features
* By combining several simulations, the Library modules can be used to provide an integrated approach that looks at entire biological systems.
* Interactivity allows students to develop and test their own hypotheses.
* Use of the computer facilitates the collection of complex data and encourages communication and collaboration between the students and with their teachers.
* Students work with realistic, multi-dimensional problem-solving spaces, using the techniques and tools that research scientists use.
* Students develop a more realistic appreciation of how scientists investigate problems.
* All modules are passed through a formal peer-review process as well as beta-testing.

Book Description
In this practical guide, Santurette and Georgiev show how to interpret water vapor patterns in terms of dynamical processes in the atmosphere and their relation to diagnostics available from weather prediction models. In particular, they concentrate on the close relationship between satellite imagery and the potential vorticity fields in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere. These applications are illustrated with color images based on real meteorological situations. The book's step-by-step pedagogy makes this an essential training manual for forecasters in meteorological services worldwide, and a valuable text for graduate students in atmospheric physics and satellite meteorology.
* Shows how to analyze current satellite images for assessing weather models' behavior and improving forecasts
* Provides step-by-step pedagogy for understanding and interpreting meteorological processes
* Includes full-color throughout to highlight "real-world" models, patterns, and examples

back to basics helps scientists, too.......2003-05-05
I admit nearly passing on this book because of its goofy title. But I'm trying to return to the simple things in life, now, including the fundamental laws of physics. These, at least, have remained steadfast and reliable as I've gone through various stages of confusion and confoundment. Since entropy is one of these reliable consistencies in life, I was looking for a kind of "Entropy For Dummies" introduction. This looked like it fit the bill.
The fact is, it exceeds my expectations in every category. If you're a scientist, please take a look at this volume. Not only does it give clear presentations of otherwise complex concepts that are helpful in your own thinking, but you will probably know many others whose lives could be greatly improved by it.
Seriously, this book should be republished with a more sober title. It's a good solid treatment of information that every curious mind in the world needs.
It's a treasure!
Lively- for a scientist........2001-03-24
Not usually a great reader of science, I stumbled across this book at my local library, books on entropy not usually a primary concern of my reading list. But I was pleasently suprised with the fluidity and - yes!- wit with which Kirwan writes. He deserves praise for explaining a topic as dry as critical thinking in such an engaging manner. This is an excellent book for laymen and I wish more scientists would learn to write as well as Kirwan. Heartily recommended for the scientifically challenged who need a break from the usual fare of histories and novels. And yes, it turns out entropy is quite important. Who would have guessed?
Science for non scientists.......2001-01-12
This is an excellent book for non scientists interested in Nature. It reads very well. Would be a great textbook for a course "science for non majors" or "introduction to science". Wonderful present for your teenager.

The motivating power of dream and the political price of illusions are the subject of Doris Lessing's extended family saga, The Sweetest Dream. While Frances Lennox, uncomplaining and unsentimental about her roles as a 1960s earth mother for a string of "screwed up" post-war children, serves up endless nurturing at the crowded kitchen table of a large North London house, her ex- husband pursues revolution on all-expenses-paid trips and conferences. Occasionally he drops by for free meals or to dump one of the children, or wives, of another failed marriage on Frances's doorstep. Lessing is able to turn a dispassionate eye on the economics of free love, in which women usually pay.
From swinging-'60s London to liberated sub-Saharan Africa, the author depicts the human faces of a broad canvas of issues in this polemical piece. The novel ranges from anorexia to AIDS to casting a questioning eye at the morality of the travelers on the World Bank gravy train. Moving from London to the tragic landscape of post-independence "Zimlia" (a thinly veiled Zimbabwe), Lessing documents the social movement and lost dreams of a post-war generation, for whom "it is always The Dream that counts." --Rachel Holmes, Amazon.co.uk
Book Description
Frances Lennox ladles out dinner every night to the motley, exuberant, youthful crew assembled around her hospitable tableher two sons and their friends, girlfriends, ex-friends, and ftesh-off-the-street friends. It's the early 1960s and certainly "everything is for the best in the best of all possible worlds." Except financial circumstances demand that Frances and her sons Eve with her proper ex-mother-in-law. And her ex-husband, Comrade Johnny, has just dumped his second wife's problem child at Frances's feet. And the world's political landscape has suddenly become surreal beyond imagination....
Set against the backdrop of the decade that changed the world forever, The Sweetest Dream is a riveting look at a group of people who dared to dream-and faced the inevitable cleanup afterward -- from one of the greatest writers of our time.
Download Description
PerfectBound e-book extra: "What Has Been, Can Be Again" a speech by the author This story of a family, spanning most of the twentieth century, has its fulcrum in the Sixties, that contradictory and embattled decade about which argument becomes louder each day. The youth of that time, bursting old bonds and demanding freedoms, were seen by some of their elders in a manner not at all as they saw themselves, as romantic idealists, but as deeply damaged people. Old Julia, the clan's matriarch, knows why. "You can't have two dreadful wars and then say 'That's it, and now everything will go back to normal.' They're screwed up, our children, they are the children of war."Remarkable women, Julia and Frances, grandmother and mother, fight for "the kids" against obstacles, the worst being Comrade Johnny. Here is a memorable picture of a character only recently departed from our scene. "The revolution comes before personal matters" is his dictum, as he deposits discarded wives and hurt children in the accommodating house whose emotional center is always the extendable kitchen table, that essential prop of the Sixties, around which the family sits through the evenings, eating, joking, boasting about their shoplifting, debating the violent ideologies of the time that take some of them out to the Third World, another to a South African village dying of AIDS. This novel reflects our recent history like a many-faceted mirror, and is full of people not easily forgotten, each - for worse or for better, directly or indirectly - made by war.

Many unanswered questions........2007-04-01
A good plot diluted with far too many sub-plots, some of which were rather contorted.
With remarkably few words this author can conjure up a vivid scene e.g.(pg.14)"she would go slowly upstairs, leaving behind her on the stale air the odours of flowers and expensive face powder." However, at other times the story is bogged down with far too much detail.
I liked some of the social and half-humorous statements that popped up from time to time. e.g the author's take on international conferences where "they get paid to travel to some beauty spot and talk nonsence....they take off every day to see the lions and the giraffes and the dear little monkeys and I don't think they notice the land is perishing from the drought." (437).
There were a vast number of characters in this book, making it difficult to keep track of everyone. What became of Clever and Zeberdee? We don't know. What became of Rose, the journalist, who came to Zimlia and tried to undermine and wreek havoc for Sylvia? That thread was dropped unceremoniously. Why so much attention to Colin's daughter, Celia, at the very end? Above all how does the name of the book fit this story?
Goodness shines out in a tawdry world.......2005-12-17
Doris Lessing - The Sweetest Dream.
In the first half of this splendid book we are back more or less in the territory of the author's The Good Terrorist. Frances Lennox, a middle -aged woman living in a large Hampstead house, presides unassertively over a large dinner table frequented by a group of 1960s youngsters brought home by her sons and who mostly belong to the radical left. Her Stalinist (later Maoist) ex-husband (irresponsibly abandoning wives and children seriatim) also drops in from time to time when he is not being a delegate in plushy hotels abroad, and plays the guru to the youngsters. Some rooms in the house become almost permanent squats for the young people who have often fallen out with their middle class families. Frances herself is a middle class left-wing Liberal; but she is unwilling to assert herself even when some of those who avail herself of her hospitality abuse her for being bourgeois and for belonging to an exploiting class. The politics of these youngsters are depicted as crude, their rhetoric based on clich s and slogans, their behaviour as selfish and self-indulgent. For instance, they defend their shop-lifting as an anti-capitalist activity. Clearly this novel is in part a scathing political tract against the radical left. But it is much more than that, as the psychology of Frances, of her sons, her mother-in-law, and each of the other young people is displayed with an insight which makes this a great novel and a captivating read.
In the second half of the book, in the 1980s, we move to "Zimlia", a newly liberated African country. Sylvia, Frances' step-daughter, has trained as a doctor and has then gone to work in a desperately poverty- and AIDS-stricken village in that country. In Zimlia we meet again some of the other youngsters who had sat around Frances' hospitable table: two of them, Africans who had been exiles from the country before its independence, are now in with the corrupt and incompetent government; three others have become leading figures in wealthy NGOs, moving importantly from one international gathering to another, and distributing largesse to the corrupt government without troubling to make sure that the money reaches the people who most need it. Again any possible resentment a reader might feel about being exposed to another political tract is likely to be overcome by the sheer brilliance with which the setting, the circumstances and the characters are described. Here, too, one knows that Doris Lessing is burning with rage about intellectual and political corruption, but, though there is nothing subtle about the political level of the book, her craft is such that one becomes deeply involved with and interested in the many people she so vividly portrays. The Sweetest Dream of a better world that black and white radicals had hoped for is cruelly dispelled in the shadow of Stalin, Mao, and tin-pot dictators in Africa, and Doris Lessing seems to say that it is an illusion to think we can transform the world by politics, but that individual acts of goodness and unselfishness can create pools of light in the surrounding darkness.
Compelling but needs editing.......2005-01-13
Structured in two sections set in London and Africa, The Sweetest Dream is an interesting chronicle of the turmoil of western ideology in the post-World War era. Lessing bitterly attacks the dogmatic views on communism and justice held by leaderships which were soon forgotten when they rose to power. Instead, her heroines are women (Julia, Frances, Silvia) whose political positions are not so defined but who rise above their circumstances to provide care and support to those around them. The section set in Africa is particularly intense and vivid. On the other hand, plotwise the story meanders too much and often loses focus, specially in the 60's part. I got the feeling that the novel would have improved with better editing.
Should Our Dreams Ever End?.......2005-01-07
It's the sixties and Frances Lennox and her two sons try to make the best of their situation, which requires that they live with her conservative mother-in-law, who is the German matriarch of this English family. Francis's ex-husband, who is a Communist rabble rouser, dumps his second wife's problem child Sylvia with Frances and she takes charge of the girl as if she were her own in this excellent and dramatic novel that takes you back to the tumultuous sixties. The book moves forward through two decades, reliving the politics of the times through the voices and views of Ms. Lessing's well drawn characters. A super story laced with satire.
cumbersome is a good word.......2003-10-12
but I wanted to finish it- I liked the characters - the comings and goings that politicals tend to attract. I wanted more development of some of the characters- this book has a huge cast! I really liked the idea of these homeless, wandering young people and the idea that there are people who would open their homes to them. good character studies here I think
