Very Interesting and organized.......2001-11-04

I am taking this class at FDU (where Professor Triebel is teaching this class) and I find that its a very organized text.

there may be a few errors here and there, but it also helps to simply ask the Author for help regarding any possible errors.

Professor Triebel retired from Intel and has intimate knowledge of the 8088/8086 core (as well as the new Itanium) so he's more than qualified in this field.

We are also taking the lab to accompany this class (there's a separate lab manual) and that pretty much bridges the gap between theory and practical applications. The reason being that you can learn the theory behind the instructions in the lecture, but the lab allows you to see the instructions in action.

worst microprocessor book!.......2000-05-26

Now that I have completed my digital design course and using this required text at San Jose State University (home of the second author), I would like to comment on it.

There are more mistakes in this 3rd edition than in the 2nd edition. Because of the errors, I found it hard to learn for two reasons. Either I've made the mistake (granted the book is correct), or that the authors and editors failed to do their jobs so I have to seek outside help. Even the solutions in the back of the book has obvious errors! I don't believe learning from and paying [this kind of money] for this book is fair to any customer! SJSU students have used the 2nd and 3rd editions as REQUIRED text and paid dearly. (I don't believe that students should be FORCED to buy a book because it is written by a faculty member, especially one this bad! )

Suggestions and recommendations to the authors to correct blatant errors and make improvements were not implemented by the 3rd edition. How can a book create errors from one edition to another? Let me give one simple example. Figure 10-13 on page 470 has the input and output configurations for the 8255 reversed in the 3r edition BUT is correct in the 2nd edition. I also believe a spelling checker was not used as there are typos throughout the book.

Granted there are new materials in the latter part of the book, the older core part of the book should be error-free by the third edition. It has been an extreme headache to study from this book. It has been frustrating, to say the least. To those who wish to waste their money and time, please buy this book. There are other texts less costly and probably better written. The authors need to be more proactive in producing the best possible product when their reputation is on the byline!

An essential book for basic ic knowledge.......1999-12-12

this book has been very useful in learning the basic concepts involved in the creation of a microprocessor.it has been presented in a way understandable by stdents coming from non-computing backgrounds

The review above says this is not Crumb's best stuff, and not to buy anything from "This Publisher." This makes NO SENSE, because Fantagraphics is publishing THE COMPLETE WORKS of ROBERT CRUMB, in order, from his early years right up to the present. Crumb supervises each release and writes the introductions to each volume. Furthermore, Fantagraphics is one of the best publishers of quality comix in the world.

If you like R. Crumb, this collection is pretty much the best you can get. Unless you just want a "greatest hits" which is fine to. In any case, Volume 4 is my favorite collection, but there is quality stuff in each one. The review above is sort of akin to someone blasting the Riverside Shakespeare because it includes stuff like Pericles or The Two Noble Kinsman. It's the COMPLETE WORKS, guy! It contains the BEST and the WORST, but everyone will disagree about which is which.

This collection of strips includes quite a number published elsewhere, with nine starring Mr. Natural, including "... Encounters Flakey Foont", "...the Zen Master", "...in Death Valley", "...Visits the City"; in addition to stories such as "Meatball"; "It's Cosmic"; and a series of images from greetings cards. Selections are from "Evo", "Head Comix", "Yarrowstalks", "Zap Comix" etc...This isn't necessarily Fantagraphics fault as overlap with the more comprehensive "R. Crumb's Carload o' Comics" is because THAT collection was published by J.B. Rund of Kitchen Sink Press.

The book also contains an introduction by Crumb eulogizing his late friend Marty Pahls, and photographs of Crumb, wives Dana and Aline, sister Sandra and friend Pahls.

I'd say it's a decent retrospective for anyone wanting an example of the master of the undergrounds.

Comix Guaranteed To Blow Yer Mind!.......2000-08-15

'Mr. Sixties' features the creme de la Crumb, executed while he was still a wide-eyed rube, lost in the hubbub of Haight-Ashbury and the Summer of Love. Featuring lots of psychedelia (Crumb started dropping acid in '66), Crumb's work in 'The East Village Other', 'Yarrowstalks' and the ground-breaking 'ZAP Comix' #0 & 1 immediately appealed to the anti-Establishment Flower Children. These were harmless cartoons- innocent fun and a far cry from such later controversial pieces as 'Jumpin' Jack Flash', 'Dicknose' and 'Joe Blow'. Also included is the Crumb/ Gibbons' publication, 'The Sad Book'. Well recommended. Note to Parents: Although (at first glance) Crumb's work appears to be harmless 'kid's cartoons', these comix are definitely meant for ADULTS ONLY!

Essential for anyone interested in Crumb or u.g. comics.......2000-03-11

I have to object to the previous review--this book includes the material that created a new audience and inspired countless artists. While it may not ultimately be Crumb's best work--he was very young at the time that it was produced, and other collections, like "Carload of Crumb," offer a better cross-section of his early work--it still offers real pleasure to the interested reader. The previous reviewer's slap against the publisher, Fantagraphics, is especially egregious: they have an impeccable track record of high-quality editions of comic art worth preserving, and this classic is no exception.

"I could not open that part of my heart while it's still shaking," she writes in her introduction to Memories of John Lennon, and so the long-awaited inside story of one of the last century's great romances remains untold. Instead, Ono solicited material from over 70 of Lennon's friends, contemporaries, and admirers, and is marking that terrible anniversary with a collection of their reminiscences. (Notably absent are Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and Lennon's first wife, Cynthia, who just wrote her own book on their decade together.)

As might be expected, there is a fair amount of hero-worship in these pages--Paul Reiser and Nils Lofgren both call the Beatle a "friend I never met," and B-52s singer Kate Pierson admits to considering him "practically a mythological figure." Some, too, choose to memorialize him in poem, art, or song, none of which particularly resonate. But the book is not without its share of engaging moments, most of which come from those who actually spent time with Lennon. Family confidant Elliot Mintz writes of the devoted husband, "how he used to brush [Yoko's] hair...or when we'd be going out to a restaurant and she would put her coat on and he would adjust her collar so that it would look pretty and frame her face." Double Fantasy drummer Andy Newmark remembers the spirited musician, exhorting him to simplify his fills and just "play like Ringo." Donovan recalls days with the Maharishi in Rishikesh, teaching Lennon to finger-pick his guitar and hearing "Julia" and "Dear Prudence" as they were composed. Others cover the political activist, compassionate friend, and loving father. Memories of John Lennon can hardly be called a balanced portrait of the man, but neither is it all dull hagiography. A Wonderful and Very Enjoyable book about a Great Man........2007-01-20

Being a big fan, I have read many books about John and The Beatles. This book really shows you who he really was, with private memories of him. The book is composed of people who have had experiences with John or just were admiring fans. John changed so much. And he changed so many lives.
I could barely put this book down. It made me laugh and cry. It is a book to be treasured.

Really, really funny!.......2006-07-13

Way too many entries contain the phrase, "Well, I never met John, but..." and at least as many (sometimes the same entries!!) say "Yoko, love of his life and John's saviour..." or something like that. (Alica Keyes and her mom each has an entry of that sort.)

Might there not have been, in all the surviving people who actually knew John, maybe one or 2 who didn't deify Yoko? [I have to add at this point that I didn't have any preconceived idea of her. I was given a copy of this book and got my input from that. That inspired me to read more Beatles biographies later.]

This was a project so self-serving, so shameless, that it was really quite funny. It gets three stars for entertainment alone, and I think the production process for this book went something like this:

[Alicia Keyes and Tori Amos are having lunch at a tea shop in Manhatten. They are approached by Yoko Ono and two bodyguards.]

Yoko: Ms. Keyes, Ms. Amos. I'm sure you know me but have been too polite to violate my privacy.

Tori: Huh?
Alicia: YOKO-OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Yoko: I am compiling a book of memories of my late husband, John, whose contribution to art was recognizing mine. Would you like to participate?

Tori: But I never met the guy.

Yoko: That is immaterial. This is art; what matters is the impression. Write you impressions of me--I mean him, and you can be in a book.

Alicia: Wow!!

[at the next table, a man and his wife have been eavesdropping.]

Man: I think the way John treated his first wife is appalling, but has some absurdist potential. Can I write about that?

Yoko: [hissing] YOUR input is not necessary, Mr. Woody Allen!

Bianca Jagger [at next table] Guess you don't want mine, either.

Alicia: I can be in a book! I can be in a book!

Memories Of John Lennon, "edited" and introduced by Yoko Ono. I put that word in quotes because I'm skeptical that this book was edited at all.

A real editor might have reminded contributor and onetime activist Tariq Ali that "Revolution" was a single, not an album.

Ali also writes of the day Lennon died:

"I think the tribute [John] would have loved was the spontaneous grief in Moscow as kids rushed to the Lenin hills and sang "Back in the U.S.S.R."

Yes, if I were John Lennon, I'd love it if people grieved for me by singing a Paul McCartney song, too.

Ali shares pride-of-place for ignorance with of all people, Ray Charles, who makes a similar mistake about "Yesterday."

The book as a whole overflows with gushing, largely unearned sentiment. If it was just another one of those things it would be bad enough but it's also absolute psychic head for Yoko.

Person after person: Yoko was the love of John's life; as an artist, Yoko was 30 years ahead of her time; the only possible reason one can be critical of Yoko is if one is racist or sexist or probably both.

I'm not saying some of it isn't true. I'm not one of those people who thinks Yoko was the devil (it's just that she couldn't sing). I'm saying it's unseemly for someone to include all that stuff about themselves in a book.

When they're not scubbing clean The Perfect Story of John and Yoko, the contributors are rewriting their own personal history as well. Or staking their claims to their own part of The Lennon Story.

Jann Wenner tells (again) the story of putting Lennon on the cover of the first Rolling Stone and conducting his lengthy interview with John. What he omits is that Lennon was furious with Wenner when the interview was published as a book against his express wishes.

Donovan's piece turns out to be about how, as he remembers it, he taught Lennon to finger-pick...and suggested the design for "The White Album."

It gets two stars because there are one or two nice things. But for the most part this is more of the revionist, there-is-nothing-nasty-in-John's-life deification of the man that has forced me to the following position:

Never trust anyone who says their favorite John Lennon song is "Imagine." They're drippy people.

wonderful book.......2006-05-30

this book is very touching and dear, it made me cry and laugh, and i think there will always be people who will say bad things about yoko because she has the courage to stand up for her politics, the courage to be true to who she is... people may not like these politics or they make think she's too radical or they may be saying those thing because of racism (as elliot mintz talked about john lennon's belief of this). i was really touched by this book and anyone who loved the many aspects of who john lennon was should read this book

Super inspirational book with a wealth of information about one of the most interesting people of the 20th Century and also one of the most complex members of the famous rock groups, the Beatles. I found my own creative juices flowing while reading this rich list of testimonials by others in contact with and being influenced from afar by John Lennon, the real person. The book's writers speak of the artist within this sensitive man as we may never have known him before. Thank you Yoko Ono for the creative inspiration offered to all those open minded sensitive souls willing to read this book. All positive energies needing connection between those same open minded readers of this book throughout the universe are possible! What else can be said.. SO READ IT - NOW! As John Lennon said, "We are all part of the sky, more so than of the ground".

Revisit the past, when you read this book. Remember a time, not too far away, when it was "cool" to care about the world, and common to risk one's safety to express these views. Just where have all these people gone? Perhaps, Dr. Yulish will write a sequel and answer the question he has posed. Until then, read this book, and wander down an incense-scented path to this past we all share.

If you like puzzles, this would be a fun book if it weren't for one very big problem. However, it is plagued with editing mistakes that quite simply should have been caught prior to publication. Don't waste your money on this book, instead choose a puzzle collection that has been checked for mistakes, as this one should have been.

As with all Inside Out books from Microsoft Press, Excel 2003 was fantastic. The thing I love most about these books is (1) the comprehensiveness of the book while (2) not forgetting to cover the fundamentals of the product. Thus, anything you want to do with Excel is covered, from simple formatting to working with external data all the way up to creating highly complex spreadsheets with macros and programming. This book is perfect for all Excel (or spreadsheet) creators.

A very good book to have on the desk for those of you who use Excel extensively and might utilize some uncommon formulas and/or functions to save time.

I must admit I returned this book, but not because it lacked the resources. I was looking for a Visual Basic book for Excel and bought this in error, but looking through it briefly it contained a wealth of information. If you are not into the writing vba and just into writing functions and formulas this books has lots of nice tricks and tips.

Good book except a few errors and hpyes..........2006-08-22

This book contains a lot of errors which should be corrected, and many pro-microsoft or authors' commercial tool hypes (which costs you your time). Some contents are repeating and it may take for you to finish the book longer than it should, but nicely written and well explaining a variety of topics. Basically this is a good book with few minor problems. With the same money, however, I am afraid that taking another Excel book could be a better choice.

I use a book like this mainly for reference on specific points. The index is so defective, however, that the book is almost entirely worthless. (Try looking up "Shared Workspace task pane", for example)

A Nice Book for Beginners............2005-08-08

I have recently been turned on to Visual Basic due to my position in an Engineering Firm. We deal with a ton of calculations based on current projects. This book has helped tremendously in getting a foothold of the begining stages of Excels Visual Basic coding.

Some of the other reviewers have not been happy with this book and claim it to be useless. I do not find that to be true. If you are an advanced user/developer of excel programing then there ARE many books that will help more than this book, but if you have never done any coding in Excel, then this book is a really good start. Hey, where can you find a good intro book of this caliber, used, for less than $5.00?

This book does have it's down falls. It is a bit difficult to follow sometimes in that they don't really give more detailed explainations of how things go together but if you can read the first few chapters and still understand then you should have no problems working through this down fall.

This book does have a large amount of information in it. It covers all the topics that a beginning coder would need. They discuss in each chapter what the topis is for and how it works. The layout of this book is a nice one too. I have 'Inside Out' books on 'MS Project & Outlook'. These are very nice as well and the main reason I went with this book on Excel. I do not feel I went wrong here at all and would recommend this book to anyone wanting to get into Excel Programming.

In Summary, this is a good book for the price. You should find it helpful while on your path to Excel programming.

PLEASE Look for another book!.......2004-10-02

This book isn't worth your time or money. I certainly wasted mine on it. The Author is so caught up in his ability to write code that he forgot what the book is about. No explanations of the code are offered so that you can follow his train of thought. I think he is off in the Delta Quadrant somewhere. The index is next to useless. Try to find 'comments' and you are directed to a page that has the word 'comments' on it but explains nothing regarding adding COMMENTS to your code. Most of his examples don't even work outside his tiny environment - I couldn't make any of them work in my Excel code. Forget troubleshooting your code! His code is so perfect he obviously didn't fell the need to write anything that helps debug your code. The book also lacks an appendix with a list of functions for easy reference. If you want a function your going to spend a huge amount of time flipping through pages. DON'T BUY!

Great introduction to Excel programming.......2004-07-25

I bought this book four months ago, and I've found it a great introduction to Excel Programming.
The VBA Programming Starter Kit (Chapter 4) begins a series of chapters that walk through the fundamentals -- it's one of the best intros on the subject I've seen.
I also like the "Inside Out" boxed section which often provide facts I often didn't know about.
I'm an experienced Excel programmer, so I'm not really the audience for this book, but if you're getting started this is a great place to begin.
Most of the value to me was in the "Inside Out" sections and the database chapters -- for one thing it got me started using worksheet functions like VLookup in my VBA code. I tended to take a VBA code approach to those problems, but heck it's easier to just use the built-in Excel stuff -- good luck finding that info in the product doc!
If there's any criticism I would level it's that it doesn't cover the new Excel features at any depth: don't expect to find info on XML Maps, Lists, Workspaces, or Permissions. That infos not in the Walkenbach book either, unfortunately (I sent that one back).
Also, this book is not a VBA/Excel reference. I think some of the other reviewers had that assumption and where disappointed. Look to another book if you want a reference.
