Book Description
Aspirations and Anxieties is a working class intellectual history of early factory operatives in antebellum New England. The book focuses on the operatives' perceptions of technological and socio-economic changes in the mechanized workplace. The study uncovers a complex debate over many
facets of the factory system--the machines and factory buildings, wages and hours, relations between managers and workers, and the content and character of protest. Finally, the book argues that the roots of this debate lie in the struggle to define the meaning of work itself in a period of
profound social change.

Book Description
Hilarious story of an aspiring writer who spends five years as an L.A. public school substitute teacher. Tales of promiscuous PTA moms, drug induced misadventures of faculty members, and student/teacher romances make this a book that should convince most parents to send their kids to private school.
Customer Reviews:
Heh and I thought My Job Was Bad!.......2007-05-20
A good read and well worth every penny. He opens up the seedy and hilarious underbelly of the teaching profession with humor and sarcasm.
Nice work Mr. C!
Not for everyone... BUT I LOVED IT!.......2005-08-28
It's unfortunate that people most likely to enjoy this book will probably never read it. (I only read it at the insistence of a friend.) If you consider yourself an intellectual, take a pass; you won't "get" the humor. But for those who enjoy beer, cigars, dirty jokes and self-deprecating humor, I recommend this book.
First of all let me warn you, this isn't a novel. It's a fictionalized account, using essays/short stories, of a young New Yorker (Lenny) who wants to be a TV writer. And while awaiting his break, he becomes a substitute teacher in L.A. What separates this from other stories about teachers (besides some risque content) is that the author seems to have true disdain for the public education system, understanding all too well that people like himself are part of the problem.
One of my favorite parts is the opening of a chapter where he states, "They say that God watches out for children, drunks and fools. Simply put, this means I stand a two-thirds better chance for divine intervention in my life than most other people." Another is a conversation with a literary agent who's displeased with all the jokes Lenny has written in a sitcom script (says it's "too jokey"). Lenny is baffled by this. The annoyed agent asks, "You know what happens to scripts that have TOO many jokes?" A confused Lenny responds, "They win Emmys?" But my favorite could be the part where he's describing how some kids want to act tough but just can't seem to fill the role. "Sort of like Michael Keaton playing Batman or Tony Danza playing any character other than an Italian guy from New York named Tony."
I like this type of humor so the book was easy for me to enjoy. If you don't find the above snippets funny, then this probably isn't for you.
The book grows on you.......2005-04-25
Let's get something straight. "No one's even bleeding" is far from being an erudite piece of literature (not to mention that the language is mediocre, colloquial and chit-chatty throughout), but there is something truly authentic about the work. You genuinely feel that Castellanetta has struggled as a substitute teacher and has struggled even more to realise his ill-fated dream of becoming a Hollywood script-writer. The back cover of the book refers to John Lennon's quote, "life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans." Ive never felt the significance of this sentence more than when I read "No one's even bleeding." An ordinary tale of a dream gone haywire, but one that depicts it's authors journey well. He hoped, aimed and lived for one thing, but spent years stumbling onto other unexpected things along the way.
I cant say that the book is "hilarious" as other reviewers have. At best, it is very amusing...but silently so. I didnt crack up hysterically or have milk coming out of my nose as other reviewers claimed. But I was entertained enough to give this book 4 stars. The quality of the humour can be cheap at times, with too many wise-cracks and a little too much self-depracation. However, it's the insanity of the school system Castellanetta describes which really had me entertained....I read with wide-eyed surprise. And Castellanetta isnt bluffing either, that's the thing, he is merely re-iterating what he went through as a sub. in LA's notorious public schools. While Im saying this, I should make it a point to mention as well that the author is by no means a soppy innocence-ridden victim, he's a big bundle of mischief and touts around a pretty lax set of morals. He might offend a few readers. Still, I think he's likeable because he makes no claims of sainthood. He describes it as it is.
All in all, though the book's a bit expensive, I think it's worth reading, if only for the fact that it will teach you a very important thing: if you have the option, do not dare send your kids to public schools in California !!!!
Save your money.......2004-09-23
I really wanted to like this and am by no means a snob about writing but this is the first book I've ever read that I wondered how it even got published. As other reviews have said it repeats itself a lot and comes across so amateurish it's questionable any sort of editorial process happened. That the author pursued writing for TV sitcoms is not surprising. It's simplistic like a sitcom, most of the jokes are flat (and many not so much a joke but a cliche) and it's so disjointed it'd have been better structured as a series of essays. There are some good core stories here with the potential to be funny but it consistently fails.
Starts off good....but gets boring.......2004-09-11
The book starts off good and interesting, but I feel like some parts are repetitive. Nothing new or exciting is ever introduced. Kind of like a long soap-opera. I still haven't finished the book because after reading about 3/4 of it; I just don't have a desire to finish the book because it doesn't seem like anything meaningful is going to happen.

Customer Reviews:
for quick fingers.......2007-09-02
Very usefull book if you are a good reader and expierienced guitar player. 101 good ideas to play or to build on to bring variation into your playing.
Not a beginners book.
Great reference book on the historical eras of jazz........2006-07-29
Wolf Marshall always writes great books. The guy's a brain surgeon when it come to transcribing guitar licks as he analyzes every detail. He makes sure the reader knows the historical context of the lick, the chord/scale relationship, articulation phrasing, even amp/guitar combinations when applicable.
Although it is written for the guitarist, the book transcribed a lot of non-guitar licks played by horn players like Charlie Parker and Miles Davis. The chapters are divided by eras. First the swing era, pre-bebop, bebop (Parker) hard bop, cool jazz, modal jazz (Miles), then contemporary jazz, and post modern jazz. I think that about covers it.
The only drawback, if there is one, is that it's only a lick book. The user is without the benefit of a play-along recording on the CD to practice your newly learned lick with. You might have a tendancy to learn a lick, but you never apply it, and consequently forget it. At least this book is good enough you'll keep it in your library. It's a reference book you'll want to come back to.
Nicely Done!.......2005-03-31
I'm amazed at this collection. Almost ALL 101 liks are relevant licks that you will recognized inmediately. This will be a great supplement to any Guitar Method book you might be studying. Special notice have to go about the great quality of the CD recording.
Sounds Good, doesn't it........2005-02-20
I've been down this road before. Buy the book, get involved with it, learn a few things then forget them. But, there is value here. Methods such as these do start the creative juices flowing, plus exercise your technical abilities. I won't put too much weight on these methods, but Wolf Marshall has put out some wonderful aids for the developing guitarist.
Choose those licks, or songs you like and rehearse those. Developing a language of your own sounds easy. But it's not. It takes some time and a boat load of dedication.
My hat is off to Wolf Marshall, he's jump starting the process, but you have to keep at it. YOU HAVE TO PUT IN THE TIME AND EFFORT. There is no substitute for that phase of development.
Fantastic.......2003-08-04
This is a great way to build one's resources for improvisation.

Book Description
When the African-American dancer Josephine Baker visited Berlin in 1925, she found it dazzling. "The city had a jewel-like sparkle," she said, "the vast cafes reminded me of ocean liners powered by the rhythms of their orchestras. There was music everywhere." Eager to look ahead after the crushing defeat of World War I, Weimar Germany embraced the modernism that swept through Europe and was crazy over jazz. But with the rise of National Socialism came censorship and proscription: an art form born on foreign soil and presided over by Negroes and Jews could have no place in the culture of a "master race." In Different Drummers, Michael Kater--a distinguished historian and himself a jazz musician--explores the underground history of jazz in Hitler's Germany. He offers a frightening and fascinating look at life and popular culture during the Third Reich, showing that for the Nazis, jazz was an especially threatening form of expression. Not only were its creators at the very bottom of the Nazi racial hierarchy, but the very essence of jazz--spontaneity, improvisation, and, above all, individuality--represented a direct challenge to the repetitive, simple, uniform pulse of German march music and indeed everyday life. The fact that many of the most talented European jazz artists were Jewish only made the music more objectionable. In tracing the growth of what would become a bold and eloquent form of social protest, Kater mines a trove of previously untapped archival records and assembles interviews with surviving witnesses as he brings to life a little-known aspect of wartime Germany. He introduces us to groups such as the Weintraub Syncopators, Germany's best indigenous jazz band; the Harlem Club of Frankfurt, whose male members wore their hair long in defiance of Nazi conventions; and the Hamburg Swings--the most daring radicals of all--who openly challenged the Gestapo with a series of mass dance rallies. More than once these demonstrations turned violent, with the Swings and the Hitler Youth fighting it out in the streets. In the end we come to realize that jazz not only survived persecution, but became a powerful symbol of political disobedience--and even resistance--in wartime Germany. And as we witness the vacillations of the Nazi regime (while they worked toward its ultimate extinction, they used jazz for their own propaganda purposes), we see that the myth of Nazi social control was, to a large degree, just that--Hitler's dictatorship never became as pure and effective a form of totalitarianism as we are sometimes led to believe. With its vivid portraits of all the key figures, Different Drummers provides a unique glimpse of a counter-culture virtually unexamined until now. It is a provocative account that reminds us that, even in the face of the most unspeakable oppression, the human spirit endures.
Customer Reviews:
spielt auf nun zum Tanz.......2003-05-09
A distinguished, prolific historian and accomplished jazz musician, Michael H. Kater teaches history at York University in Toronto. He has written several well-received books; prior to Different Drummers, I knew him primarily from his excellent, 1975 study of the role of right-wing student fraternities at German universities during the rise of Nazism, Studentschaft und Rechtsradikalismus in Deutschland 1918-1933 (Hamburg: Hoffmann und Campe).
Different Drummers chronicles the futile but vicious attempts of the Nazis to stamp out an art form identified with Negroes and Jews, the exquisite form of political resistance jazz represented, and its vague anticipation of the oppositional youth and student culture of 1960s West Germany.

Customer Reviews:
very good! -- allows a lot of self critique.......2006-07-24
This book is really helpful for people starting out (like students or novices), or for anyone who really needs to kickstart their "outside-the-box" thinking. It has a lot of drawing excercises, each excercise is pretty quickly done in your spare time, and their is even space on each page for you to sketch. The only thing I don't like is that for a workbook, too many excercises require you to use outside materials (ex: stamp pad?) or the computer (ex: type excercises) I enjoy it though and recommend buying it, but not at full price. :)
a great design workout!.......2001-05-22
tons of great visual exercises that really revive creative juices! Allows you to expand your vision and provides a creative resource.
can't design without it!.......2000-09-22
This book is a must-have for any professor, designer or aspiring design student. The full range of creative problems stimulates and enriches!
