Real strugglers, building organization of struggle.......2004-06-20
This is a verbatim record of a meeting of hundreds of revolutionary workers at the height of the radicalization of the 1930s. There were many hundreds of workers who had led the CIO upsurge in the Minneapolis Sit Down Strikes, the Flint strikes against GM, the battles in Maritime on both coasts, the struggles to organize the unemployed. There were fighters against Fascism and Antisemitism who had organized demonstrations of 50,000 against the American Nazis and fought the US's restrictions on letting Hitler's victims in. There were youth from the campuses, and youth from mines and mills, and youth who were fighting for jobs. There were Black fighters against racism and discrimination from across the country. There were veteran cadres who had led the IWW, the American Communist Party, The Communist Leage of America, the Workers Party, and the Socialist Party. They were young writers, painters, and other artists and intellectuals.
This is the record of their discussion on how to build a revolutionary party to lead workers in the US, how the teachings of Marx, Lenin, and Trotsky and their own lessons in the struggles of the 1930s point to the need for a new revolutionary party.
None of those questions have changed in substance. This discussion is enlivened not deaded because it comes from this time. It comes from a time when these questions were not abstract questions, but concrete practical questioned need to advance the struggles these militants led.
We need these lessons, we need such a party, today. The SWP is still out there fighting in mines, and garmet shops, in packing houses, and wherever workers, Blacks, Asian, Chicanos and other oppressed are fighting imperialism and expliotation.
Read this, and know why. Then fight with them.
Essential Reading.......2004-05-02
Revolutionary working people, serious students, and honest historians will find this book indispensable. It is the fruit of U.S. and Canadian Leninists' collaboration with Leon Trotsky, with whom they rescued Marxism from Stalin's gutter. Through expulsions, splits, and fusions they coalesced a genuine communist party. They were communists who proved their mettle not only in theory but in the mass victorious labor battles, including in Minneapolis in the 1930s. They consistently stood against the coming second world war and spoke out in favor of the defeat of the U.S. ruling class. Through this, they sought to turn the imperialist slaughter into world-wide revolt of working people in each imperialist country against their indigenous ruling class, which would be key to regenerating the Soviet Union by ridding it of the Stalinist infection.

Best of the Beatles for Acoustic Guitar a winner.......2007-01-09
I almost gave up on finding a good, easy to use chordbook for Beatles music until I bought this one. Even though there are a lot of funky chords in here, each chord in the song is included at the top of the songsheet, making for easy reference. The result is amazing == I have never played Beatles' songs that sounnded as close to the original. This book is a winner.
Great stuff!.......2006-10-18
This is one of the best guitar-tutor books i have ever come across. The accompanying CD sounds really good and the transcripts are spot-on. Good work Wolfie!!!
Spot-on Beatles Guitar parts.......2006-09-23
This book is not meant to be a collection of solo acoustic guitar arrangments. Instead, this book provides complete and accurate transcriptions of all the guitar parts for each of the beatles original acoustic recordings. Since the beatles used a rhythm (John) and a lead (George) guitar there are two guitar transcriptions for most of the tunes. One exception is Blackbird, which is all Paul. In most cases you will need to merge the two to come up with your own solo arrangement, Wolf provides you with very accurate transciptions making this fairly easy to do.
I got this book because it is the only one which provides a guitar transcription for the Beatles cover of Til There Was You. The transcription of this tune is perfect. I play Johns part to accompany a singer and then take George's break as an interlude. Note, on the original recording on With the Beatles they play in F, which is the key Wolf transcriped to. On the Ed Sullivan show their instruments are tuned down to Eb so they play this tune in E on that peformance, even though they use the same chords.
Good for playing, studying, and even learning.......2006-03-16
(First, before I give my review, I just can't resist saying how stupid a previous reviewer was for giving this book bad reviews because it's not written for "solo" guitar -- I mean, no where in the title or description of the book are the words "arranged for solo guitar" -- there are other Beatle's tab books on Amazon that ARE arranged for solo guitar and say so explicitly in the title. Okay, sorry for the discourse here, but I just couldn't ignore such ignorance)
The Wolf man has a great book here because he chose the tunes for their varied acoustic styles of playing. I have the Complete Beatles and have been using it to learn alot of lead and fill lines to incorporate into the band I play with. But since I just play lead, fill, and chord progressions, I'm never able to sit down and just play the guitar while I sing a song all the way through -- when I do play the songs I play with the band by themselves, it's just playing cool sounds, not actually a "song" -- it's just bits of fills, riffs, leads, and chord vamps. So my goal was to get this book, learn every song in it and because it DOES contain both guitars parts, it gives you the choice to write your own arrangements when you do sing and play without a band.
The Wolf gives great anaylyses of the songs as he breaks down all the elements of the song, e.g., he'll describe that when guitar II plays on the bridge it's doing some country styled riffs, or guitar I for the intro borrows from a jazz style motif, etc... you get the idea. And the cd is excellently produced and recorded, you get the parts played at two speeds and the best part is all the other instruments are very accurately recorded on the left channel and the guitar on the right -- very cool! Want to see how well you have learned these parts? Just switch the balance all the way to the left channel and play along with the band -- what a great challenge.
I learned and memorized "Black Bird" in one sitting -- guitar friends of mine had always told me it was an easy song to learn, but I had no idea how easy! Right now, I'm trying to learn "Julia" -- while conceptually a very simple song, since I've been playing electric lead, my finger picking has gotten very sloppy -- I'm determined to discipline myself to stick exactly to the Travis style picking they show in the book to hone my finger picking skills.
My only gripe with the book, and I was originally going to give it only four stars for this, is that Wolf didn't include "Michelle", but I soon learned by surfing around on Amazon that Wolf has two other Beatle's books out and it's included on one of those -- so, what you have here is a little sublime marketing going on. To add insult injury, he included in this book, "Rocky Racoon" which has got to be the simplist Beatle guitar part. But as I thought about it, that's what makes this book cool, it can actually be used as a "learing to play guitar with the Beatles" If I ever decide to teach, I'll use this book -- it's got very beginner to more advanced stuff.
As you can tell I highly recommend this book on all levels, but since there are so many Beatle's experts out there, I have to point out that I'm suspect to some of the transcriptions because many of the songs involve the use of a capo. I checked "The Beatles - Complete Scores" and some of the same titles in there do not use a capo. I've also heard that the Beatle's rarely used a capo -- to be honest I simply don't know what the truth is -- still, the transcriptions sound correct to me, then again, I haven't sat down anaylzing these particular titles against the record -- and without being able to separate the guitar parts out of the mix, I don't know if I'd be able to tell whether a capo was being used or not.
Okay, I've rambled on enough, let me get back to perfecting "Julia!" Cheers!
"Fills in some gaps".......2006-03-09
This is a good book. It is worth the money. It examines the Beatle's guitar styles and show's the reader how to reproduce that style authentically.
You will have fun with this book and pick up a few tips.

Russian international master Alexander Raetsky draws upon his wealth of experience in playing in the tough chess tournament circuit to supply the reader with a complete repertoire for Black against White's very popular opening move 1 e4.
Customer Reviews:
Wouldn't trust IM Raetsky further than I can throw him........2007-09-02
Two years after describing the Sicilian Four Knights as "...perfectly playable and not to face serious threats on its right to existence in the coming century..." IM Alexander Raetsky demolishes his pet line in another book (Experts vs the Sicilian).
Just thought this information could be of interest to potential buyers of 'Meeting 1.e4'...
Great Sicilian Opening book for Black.......2005-05-31
This is a great book that can be used a number of ways in building a repetoire. The main objective I believe is that most buyers want a playable opening that they can use over the long term thats solid and easy to learn. This book uses the Sicilian Four Knights as your main defense to E4. As a bonus it also covers Black responses to Whites variations to avoid the Sicilian main lines, such as the Grand Prix, Alapan etc. The Four kinghts is very solid, without the complexity of the Dragon or Najdorf. Its avery forgiving defense with clear strategic plans and the ability to swap off material to simplify the game. No less a player than Kramnik has played it over 25 times at the highest level.
One word of advice I came upon the Four Knights after using the Positional opening reptoire book by Gufeld. For me this book by Raetsky gives me more depth to the Gufeld book which I highly recommend (Gufeld's book also covers a repetoire for white uisng E4 and Black using KID). Raetskys book also covers the lines where white tries to avoid the Sicilian in great depth.
Therefore I blieve it would be advantageous to use the Gufeld book or similar first to get a good feel for the Four Knights without getting overwhelmed by the depth of variations given by Raetsky.
This book provides you with a first class response to E4 and anything that white throws at you thereafter. With the advantage of you (as black) choosing the variation rather than White, you should be more familiar with the themes & ideas of the opening which should at least give you a psychological advantage.
Great opening, great book.......2003-10-09
Bravo Alex Raetsky! Before this book, I had not even heard about this under-rated opening called the Four Knights Sicilian. Since I have started using it, my black score has improved a great deal. I haven't strayed into other black replies to 1.e4 since, because I love this opening so much. The Four Knights suit an aggresive positional player like me, who doesn't like to really get into the mating races that often happens in other sicilian defences. Another good thing about this opening is it has a basic theme running through it even when treating the c3 sic, closed sic, etc... The only reservation I can give is that if your a beginner this book will probably be over your head (lots of lines and variations), but if your an intermediate to advanced player like myself go for it! I promise you will not regret it. While your at it get the "meeting 1.d4" book too, it is great too but not as great :).
A complete repertoire for a club player against 1.e4.......2002-05-05
This is a nice book for a club player who is frustrated on meeting various responses from white after 1.e4 c5. As this book solely recommends a sicilian variation (four knights/classical sicilian), French-defence or Caro-kann players may be dissapointed with the material inside. However, sicilian players will rejoice to find a complete repertoire against sicilian c3, morra gambit, closed sicilian, grand-prix attack, etc.
All the variations are solid and theory approved, which is a good and a bad thing, for example 1.e4 c5 2.c3 Nf6 3.e5 Nd5 against sicilian c3. The bad thing is that veteran 1.e4 players may be familiar with this repertoire. However, the author has put latest theory update on these variations and I find them very interesting.
Plus side: Solid repetoire, an honest evaluation of positions
Negative side: Familiar lines (less surprise value)

Visual Basic.NET How to Program, Second Edition.......2006-06-25
I had to buy this book for a programming class in Visual Basic.Net. I've previsously had a course in Visual Basic and got an A so I am not new to programming. I say all that to say, this book falls far short of what I hoped I was getting for $100. I've typed in some of the example progams word for word and cannot get a simple program to work, generating random numbers, for example. I'm at the point now where I'll have to go shopping for another book in this subject, the Deitel book is nothing but frustration to me!
Bottom Line.....................The Deitels rock!!.......2006-06-16
This book covers so much ground it is hard to find any criticism. I did read the other reviewers and found that what was disliked the most was the bold font and things of that nature. Hey, I like the style, but that's me. I think my only criticism is always their first chapter in which it describes "What is a computer". But despite that chuckle, the book rocks, bottom line.
I am a professional software developer and I still read this book often. You can't go wrong with authors like David Sceppa (ADO.NET) or Francesco Balena (Visual Basic 2005: The Language) either, but never will you go wrong with Deitel.
It is that good.........
Hard to like.......2006-04-18
Remember when you had to read classical literature, and it seemed like the author wouldn't change paragraphs for pages at a time, and it was hard to keep your place, pay attention, or care? Well, this book is exactly like that. It is chock full of "information", I'll give it that. Problem is, their examples DON'T WORK. I'm trying to do SQL database management using the code from the book for a template, and it doesn't function whatsoever. I've wasted hours because this book is worthless as a reference, even worse as a textbook.
Also, if you're not a fan of heavy formatting, skip this book. There are more than one bold words per line. Just for kicks, I flipped to a random page (663) and counted 16 bold words in the second paragraph, which is only ten lines long. There's only one paragraph out of six that doesn't have any words bolded. It's almost like they couldn't decide which words were important, so they just went ahead and bolded/italicized everything that seemed even remotely important. This detracts from legibility and readability immensely, and is seriously infuriating when you're trying to scan for a particular keyword. Some people apparently like this style, but I think it's utterly painful to read, much less learn from.
However, all that said, I would definately recommend this book to the following people: masochists, professors who hate their students, people who have never read a halfway decently written/formatted textbook in their lives, and people who like to flush money down the toilet. Also, if you enjoy going to the dentist, this book might be for you. I'm not just someone off the street, either. I've been programming since the days of QBasic, and have read dozens of books on the topic, and this is by far the worst. If I can repel just one person from buying it/choosing it for their class, the world will be a better place and I can die fulfilled.
Good Book.......2006-03-21
I am still not very far into this but the instructions and examples are clear and easy to follow. It is a bit pricy but a great book for this subject.
How could anyone like this book?.......2005-11-06
When I first got this book, I was impressed with all the code and the fancy layout. But around half-way through I realized the following:
1. A lot of the output was in something like DOS-boxes! Can you believe that. With such a powerful system as VB.NET, they're outputing to DOS-boxes!
2. The rest of the time output was to MessageBox.Show(), which is just a very simple standard IO dialog box. I finally got disgusted when the book got to geometric output and, instead of drawing circles, I was still just printing out the values of the radius and diameter in dialog boxes. I thought to myself "What the hell is the purpose of this? I'm not learning anything!"
3. I took a cursory examination of subsequent chapters and throughout the whole book the authors use those stinking MessageBox.Show() functions.
Now the book does cover a lot of territory, but I can't believe the authors couldn't do a better job. Keep searching-this book stinks.
